At 70, after passing through half a century of shows, recordings, and overindulgence, George Jones's voice, always a miraculous instrument, is at the peak of its prowess in exploring the human condition. By and large the material here rises to that occasion. "Wood and Wire," a homage to amateur guitar pickers; the confessional, soul-baring "Half Over You"; and "I Am" are all vivid and telling. The boogie-bop of "I Got Everything" revives Jones's old "Thumper Jones" rockabilly persona, while his interpretation of "50,000 Names," Jamie O'Hara's wrenching tribute to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, is no less than spellbinding. "Beer Run," the much-hyped duet with Garth Brooks (and a variation on the Jones classic "White Lightning"), finds Brooks way out of his element. But nothing can prepare a listener for the cathartic version of Billy Joe Shaver's "Tramp on Your Street," starting with a full-blown arrangement that sheds instruments until only steel and acoustic guitars surround Jones's voice at the end. Dramatic without artifice, it's an ingenious ending to a remarkable document. --Rich Kienzle

Another Jones Greatest.......2003-06-07
Still Got It.......2003-04-23
There is a duet on this album, with Garth Brooks, called Beer Run, which is clever and the two singers compliment each other really well. There's a good mixture of traditional country ballads and his uptempo honky tonks he is known for. His vocals are still strong, he still has it. This is truly a great album of country music. My favorites include "The Rock", "Around Here", "I Am", "Tramp On your Street", "What I Didn't Do", "I Got Everything", basically the whole album. Not one disapointing moment. Overall a strong effort, George Jones still proves that he is a legend in music today.

This Possum is alive and well!.......2002-09-07
"Half Over You", "I Am" and "The Rock" are the strongest cuts. "I Got Everything" has a simple truthful message, even though it is packaged in a fun-loving, toe-taping way (Shades of "White Lightning"!). There really aren't any weak cuts, but........why George did the duet with Garth Brooks is beyond me. The song ("Beer Run") is terrible, which is not that surprising. But George has earned his place as Country's greatest, so who am I to question his motives?
If you love "real" country, buy this one.
A National Monument.......2002-04-14
As for The Rock, I'd rate it slightly below 1999's Cold Hard Truth, but that is splitting hairs. And besides, The Rock brings two more cuts than Cold Hard Truth (12 to 10). When he wraps his whiskey-survivor's voice seriously around a song, it's hard to imagine anyone but George ever owning the song again. An exception here is, in fact, the superb title cut which was recorded a few years ago by the equally iconic Etta James. Her version is just as terrific and can be had on the excellent CD Love's Been Rough on Me. Occasionally, though, George mails in a vocal and then some of these cuts sound like the unremarkable songs they are. Examples: Beer Run, 50,000 Names (there have been much better Vietnam Memorial songs), and The Man He Was. The last six cuts here are simply thrilling, however. "I've seen rock bottom/and I've sailed to the top." How about that for wrapping up his own life in a couplet as George launches the love's end classic Half Over You? Immediately next comes I Am ("There's been bridges and there's been walls/There's been times I've been walking tall/I have loved and I have lost/I have lived and I've paid the cost"), a song of responsibility, acceptance, self-forgiveness, and no regrets, a fine place to reach after 70 years. What I Didn't Do describes as sure a way to kill love as cheating. Tramp on Your Street, well, a memory of ten barefoot miles to have heart and soul touched hearing Hank Williams sing who, body worn and spirit free, knew exactly who his songs were for. Country doesn't get any better than George and George doesn't get any better than this. Spectacular.
