2 out of 5 stars For Serious, Already Established Johnny Cash Fans Only, New Listeners Will Probably Not Be Won Over By This CD.......2006-04-14

This is a so-so album by Johnny Cash. There are no hit songs, or at least very few, if any, memorable songs, if any did manage to chart in 1959.

The CD is re-mastered and re-issued here, so the CD booklet has many nice, mostly b/w photos, and liner notes. The sound quality is fine. They did a nice job re-issuing this album, and they even rounded up six bonus tracks, which gives the running time a healthy 42 minutes total. The fault lies in the original performances and song choices, which seem old fashioned and less interesting than his previous, groundbreaking debut hits.

I thought that only his Gospel tunes could be accused of being old fashioned, but here, with only a couple of Gospel-ish songs, Johnny's non-religious tunes can be just as old fashioned.

This is Johnny Cash's second studio album. It is his first album for Columbia records, who signed him after Sun Records let him get away. Actually, Sun Records had many hits with Johnny Cash, but only released one studio album while Johnny was with Sun.

This CD is best for serious, established fans who want to trace his career and all his music. New and casual listeners of Johnny Cash will not likely be patient and interested enough to enjoy this, and they will be better suited with a greatest hits CD, for which I would recommend THE LEGEND OF JOHNNY CASH, or 16 BIGGEST HITS.

There are a few enjoyable songs for the serious fan on THE FABULOUS JOHNNY CASH, but most of this album is uninteresting. I must admit that with familiarity and repeated listenings, (and lower expectations), I do let some of these songs grow on me, and I like them more, the more I hear them. But there are many other, better Johnny Cash CDs out there, so this is a CD that is best for the long-time fan who has already been through all of his better CDs and is looking for the most obscure stuff. This album is definitely full of little known, obsure tunes.

Right now, my favorite Johnny Cash studio album is AMERICAN IV: THE MAN COMES AROUND. My favorite live album is JOHNNY CASH AT SAN QUENTIN. My most recommended Johnny Cash Gospel album is GOSPEL GLORY.

I can also highly recommend his spoken word, 16 CD set, JOHNNY CASH READS THE COMPLETE NEW TESTAMENT of the Holy Bible! That is truly fun to listen to for Christian fans of Johnny Cash.

My respect for short records has grown in the past few years. I grew up loving exess, 40 min songs, power and progressive metal, long records, double records, ect. Of course there is almost always filler when it comes to excess, but it brings some genius stuff out to the public that wouldn't have made the cut if some strict record label exec was decided what should be released. Well here, with Johnny Cash's first Columbia release, we get the exact opposite of excess. The original LP was 12 songs all clocking in around 2 min's a piece. The record comes to about 30 min's. But the point is that this is a great record. 12 songs that you will listen to over and over and over and over again. The sound quality is great, even for today's standards. The addition of a drummer (which Johnny did not have for most of his sun recordinds) is a plus, because it allows bassist Marshall Grant to playing in a not smack happy way. Luther Perkins never sounded so good before or after this recording. All in all, this is truly Cash's first cohesive LP (Sam Phillips from Sun did not believe in LP's, he recorded singles only at that point, although did hodgepodge about 5 lps of John's sun input). "One More Ride", "Walkin The Blues", "Oh What A Dream", "Pickin Time", "The Shepard", "Run Softly Blue River", "I Still Miss Someone", "Dont Take Your Guns to Town", and "Frankie's Man, Johnny" are all classic.

This was Johnny Cash's first album for Columbia Records. Two singles were released from the album, "Don't Take Your Guns to Town" (#1 Country, #32 Pop) and "Frankie's Man, Johnny" (#9 Country, #57 Pop). The album also features the classic "I Still Miss Someone" (which was the b-side of "Don't Take Your Guns to Town", incidentally). Most of the other songs on the album are very good, particularly "One More Ride", "That's Enough" and "Pickin' Time". The CD adds six bonus tracks, five of which are previously unreleased in the U.S. These songs are generally not as good as the ones that were on the original album, although they are not bad by any means. "Walking the Blues" is a great country-blues, and the alternate take of "Oh What a Dream" is a real treat, being the first take of the first song Johnny ever recorded for Columbia. Recommended to fans of Johnny Cash.

This, the first Johnny Cash LP on Columbia, was the first to present him as the multi-faceted artist he always was. One of the best things about it is the variety of material, from pop songs, rockabilly/honky tonk, ballad, and gospel as well as the variety of emotion, swaggering, wistful, wary, fervent, heartbroken, you name it.
It starts off in a country-pop vein with the first four tunes, all good but more lightweight feeling. But with song number five, the hopped-up wanderlust anthem One More Ride, the record picks up and doesn't let up until it drops you off sweetly with Suppertime. Without a doubt, That's Enough is the highlight of the record. It wasn't the first gospel number Cash recorded at Columbia, but the euphoria and catharsis of Johnny proclaiming "I've got Jesus, and that's enough" are so palpable you'd think he just saw the light right then and there. It never fails to give me goosebumps. The remaining cuts vary in tempo and style but they never let up on that emotional intensity. A perfectly programed album.
The bonus tracks are all very strong, especially Walking the Blues and Mama's Baby, a great pop number.
If you like any Johnny Cash or heartfelt music of any kind, you should get this CD. It's the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny's earliest Columbia recordings.......2002-10-06

Johnny was with Columbia records (now part of the Sony group) for a quarter of a century, during which he had his ups and downs and recorded albums in a variety of styles, sometimes themed, yet his underlying trademark sound was always there, even when it was buried under layers of strings.

The most famous of Johnny's own songs on this set are Don't take your guns to town (one of his most famous hits) and I still miss someone (one of the most often covered JC songs). I particularly like his version of Frankie and Johnny. There are many variations of this song with different lyrics. In most of them (including the ones by Elvis and Brook Benton), the man is unfaithful, but not in this version.

This is a brilliant collection, but don't expect it to sound like his late sixties or seventies music. The only instruments credited are guitar, bass, drums, bass and piano - and I don't hear much piano. In later years, other instruments would be added to vary the sound, but these recordings, like the Sun recordings which preceded them, are very simple and stark.

    My dad had this record while I was growing up. It was one of only two or three that I was allowed to put on the turntable myself. I listened to it all the the time. At about age 8 or 9 I started getting into Rock n Roll (the Beatles, Beach Boys, Who, etc.) and this record kinda just disappeared from the the stack of records we had. I hadn't heard this record for over 30 years. I recently found this compilation on Amazon and ordered it immediatley. I could'nt believe how much I've missed these tunes. 'Run Softly Blue River' sounds so beautiful still. That opening 'C' note on the electric guitar still makes me cringe. It was Johnny's guitar player ( I think it's Luther Perkins on this one) that turned me on to Rock players like George Harrison and Keith Richards. And Johnny's voice...........Oh my god, WHAT A VOICE!!! For me, this record is where it all started. My love for Rock n Roll music started here. Say what you may, but this is an early Rock n Roll record. I highly recommend this one.

    I'm delighted that those two are finally on CD together. These are the first two albums JC released at Columbia in 1958/59 and still two greatest ones alongside BItter Tears and Unchained. Some Jimmie Rodgers and Tex Ritter spirits on it and this CD is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you wanna start your J. R. Cash collection

    Songs of our Soul is one of the earliest Columbia albums that Johnny did after leaving Sun Records. I have it on vinyl, and there are some absolute though rarely heard classics such as Hank and Joe and me, Drink to me, Great Speckled Bird etc. If you like Johnny, and you like that old time country style with the Jordanires-type background singers, this one is for you.

      All I can say is that I totally agree with the other reviewer. Columbia Records is proving itself stupid not to release Songs of our soil - I have a tape of it from an LP that a friend loaned me years ago. It's a magnificent album - tunes like Clementine, Hank and Joe and me and the Jordanaires in the background - well, all I can say is it can't be beat. If you like the Gospel Collection, then this double CD is a must. Any Cash fan with good taste would love this collection.

      Two of Johnny Cash's oldest albums of which only Fabulous Johnny Cash has been available on CD until now. These are also two of the very few Johnny Cash albums that Columbia has released on CD - it would be great if they stopped making all these Best Of and Greatest Hits albums and started re-releasing the actual albums or let Bear Family make some more of the wonderful Man in Black boxes. This album includes some of songs which are also found on these Greatest Hits etc. Songs like Don't Take Your Guns to Town and Five Feet High and Rising. But it also includes a lot of songs which have never been released on CD (save for the Man in Black boxes). With this CD you get two old albums and the original liners notes. And if you haven't got them on LP already you will hear a lot of new songs.
