5 out of 5 stars All the wheat and not much chaff.......2006-02-20

There's something a bit frustrating about the MCA portion of Nanci Griffith's career. She has a couple of five-star albums to her credit dating to before and after the period covered here, but none from during the MCA era. All four of the albums collected here have some wonderful songs and a few forgettable ones. The good news, though, is that none of the songs are actually bad. Besides, with four albums for less than the price of two, a few weak links are perfectly acceptable.

If any of those four is missing from your collection (and especially if you only have a greatest-hits CD), this is worth picking up. All four of the MCA albums featured at least one great song that hasn't turned up on any of her live albums or compilations. "Lone Star State of Mind," "Never Mind," "Love Wore A Halo," "San Diego Serenade," and "You Made This Love A Teardrop" have all aged just as well as concert staples like "Gulf Coast Highway" or "I Wish It Would Rain" (which are, of course, here as well).

For the completists, there are three previously unreleased (or nearly-unreleased) songs here. Of these, the bouncy "Tumble and Fall" is definitely a keeper, and "Stand Your Ground" is also pretty good. The third, a cover of "Wooden Heart," is just about identical to every other version of that song I've ever heard, so if you liked those, you'll like her version too.

4 out of 5 stars Early Efforts.......2006-02-06

I enjoyed listening to these tracks, but I found Ms. Griffith's later recordings to be much more powerful. In particular, "Last of the True Believers" just blows me away whenever I play it.

This "Complete Recordings" double-CD set is a good value, and anyone who loves Nanci Griffith will appreciate that this appears to be a complete collection of recordings from a period in the artist's life.

5 out of 5 stars A Must - Have for Griffith Fans!.......2005-12-02

This is one of the best compilations of her music I've heard - and at a good price to boot! It's a great sampling for new fans and old ones alike - an absolute delight to my ears!

5 out of 5 stars 4 albums for the price of 2. Nanci is brilliant........2004-12-14

This collection includes four complete Nanci Griffith albums: Lone Star State of Mind, Little Love Affairs, Storms, and Late Night Grande Hotel, plus a couple of previously unreleased tracks. They're all very good albums, so this collection is a real bargain. It's not meant as a "best of" collection, but rather four of her albums, in their entirety. I like that, because best-of collections inevitably leave out some really good tracks. I'm a big fan of Nanci Griffith, with her bell-like little-girl voice and tuneful songs. Almost all of these songs are classics in their own right, and anyone who likes Nanci will appreciate them. Newcomers will be won over. Her music is exceptional: melodic, beautifully performed and with obvious emotional involvement. If you already have one or more of the albums, you'll have to weigh the price of getting the rest of them included here as a batch vs. buying them individually. On the other hand, there are a couple of nice bonus tracks not on the albums. If you're just starting a collection of Nanci's music this is a fabulous deal, a wealth of great music for a great price.

The seven studio albums Neil Diamond recorded for Uni Records between 1968 and 1972 are all collected on the three-disc collection Play Me: The Complete Uni Studio Recordings. And it's quite a revelation to listen to them front to back in succession like this, as these records highlight the most dramatic artistic evolution in Diamond's career. Diamond was no neophyte when he signed with Uni in '68; he'd already penned million-sellers like "I'm a Believer" and "Cherry Cherry." But he was still coming into his own as a solo artist, and albums like Velvet Gloves and Spit and Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show are wildly erratic, even for an artist renown for producing uneven albums. That said, there are countless life-affirming, goose-bump-inducing, campy, and brilliant songs on this collection. And one could easily make the argument that they're somehow made more likable--more human, in a way--when heard in their original context, bookended by unsuccessful experiments such as "The Pot Smoker's Song" and "I Am the Lion." This may not be the single Neil Diamond collection to get, but it surely should be the second or third one you buy. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars just a data point regarding the 'Stones' intro.......2006-02-26

One reviewer mentioned that the intro to 'Stones' "is abbreviated by a couple of bars of guitar". I noticed that also when playing the CD on a portable CD player. However if I instead insert the disc into my Apple PowerBook, and play the CD in iTunes, these "missing" bars are actually there and play perfectly. Ditto if I drag the 'Stones' track onto the PowerBook's "Desktop" and play it (the AIFF file) using QuickTime. :):):):)

4 out of 5 stars Uni/MCA done right... almost........2005-08-25

Every now and then, unfortunately more often than not, there's a release that's so close to being done right and yet falls short due to obvious consumer ploys, leaving one with that dirty frustrating anticlimactic feeling. "Play Me" falls into this category I'm afraid. The upside of this release is that it contains all of Neil's Uni/MCA studio records on three handy cds. The downside is the layout of the records across the discs. A seemingly obvious way to do a release like this correctly would be to put two albums per disc, so a listener could listen to the albums complete without changing the disc. Instead, here the organizers have arranged the tracks to accommodate a handy consumer ploy at the end of disc three. So, in the end two of the records are spread across two discs: "Touching You, Touching Me" on discs 1 and 2, and "Stones" on discs 2 and 3. The live tracks come from "Gold" and "Hot August Night" and of course are tunes that Bang owns in their studio versions, so MCA figures throwing the live versions on here will make this set more appealing to the casual fan trying to get more of the "hits" in one package. The only upside is that the version of "Cherry, Cherry" is the single version, which the completists out there will want. I wish the producers of this set had a little more vision and respect for the flow of the original albums and instead of the bonus live tracks here had simply placed two albums per disc and otherwise focused on a remastered "Gold", or had just added that disc to this set as a fourth cd. Aside from this major flaw though this is still the best way to get these albums for a nice price. This set is almost done right... almost.

5 out of 5 stars Best Neil Diamond collection including his early years.......2005-07-17

Some of the best Neil Diamond material is stuff he recorded before he really had a sense of where his commercial niche was and as a result I truly believe that the definitive Neil Diamond collection must include his early recording years. In this set, you have some of the most soulful and unique tracks he's ever written including some outtakes and material you may have never heard before. From his introspective bliss on "River Runs" to his late night failed recording "6AM insanity" you will be wonderfully pleased you explored Diamond's early career.

If you're looking for the best Greatest Hits album - I highly recommend Glory Road. If you're looking for the only Neil Diamond collection (and I'm including for consideration, the Box set "In my Life", which is unforgiveably missing many of his early hits) that has all of his 'keeper material' from his early recording years, then this is what you're looking for.

4 out of 5 stars The mystery of Neil Diamond.......2004-02-27

It all comes down to a song called Captain Sunshine. The words are so dumb, but the melody is so nice, and the singing is so heart felt that in spite of myself I find myself enjoying it. Why his record company wouldn't insist on someone to edit his lyrics and protect his voice (Diamond was the biggest selling artist on the planet during the time this was recorded, and a heavy heavy smoker) is beyond me. But listen to Captain Sunshine, see if it hooks you, and if it does, there are lots of non hit gems on this collection. And I'm also grateful for the Cherry Cherry version available only on this cd which was a radio hit but different than the Hot August Night version.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Collection for the Neil Diamond Fan!.......2004-02-07

I love Neil Diamond, and I love this collection of his songs. Being an Eighties child, I grew up with some of Neil's biggest hits, passed on from my parents, but on this set, I found some new songs that have become favorites, like Porcupine Pie and River Runs, New Grown Plums. The only songs I feel that I am genuinely missing are Forever in Blue Jeans and Love on the Rocks.

Side Note: This should have nothing to do with your decision whether or not to buy this set, but I happen to think the colors of the CDs are beautiful and earthy-looking. Somehow, this just makes me feel good, and it reminds of the whole Neil Diamond feeling.

5 out of 5 stars Waylon - The Untouchable Country Music Man at MCA.......2007-03-20

This is a truly outstanding CD set and it is a "must have" for every serious Waylon fan. The audiobiography on Disc #2 provides a heartwarming glimpse into this legend's ability as a writer, singer, and story teller. A true genius, the likes of which we probably will never again see.

4 out of 5 stars "I DON'T EXPLAIN IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND." ...Waylon "Trouble Man" Jennings.......2006-11-25

At one time I owned, individually, all four of the WAYLON JENNINGS albums collected in this 2-disc set: WILL THE WOLF SURVIVE? ('85) / HANGIN' TOUGH ('87) / A MAN CALLED HOSS ('87) / FULL CIRCLE ('88). Then one night in 1995, Julie Newmar, Susan Dey, Valerie Bertinelli, Judy Norton, Sally Field, Gene Tierney, and Dolly Parton broke into my house. The first six held me down and - Oh! - the things Dolly said she would do to me unless I gave them my Waylon CDs. Well naturally, not being a total lunatic, I turned over the Waylon discs, and back out through the bathroom window those women went. I'm a little ashamed to admit that I was a victim of strong-arm robbery, but it was either that or death by suffocation...that is, AFTER the unspeakable acts of mind-melting, "Mama!"-crying torture that would have been perpetrated upon my body - a fate worse than life itself!

Now I'll admit that initially I thought perhaps this all occurred while I was sleeping because at one time or another, I have fantasized about all of those women (except for the gang's bigwig, of course), and also because Gene Tierney looked awfully alluring for a woman four years dead - and let's face it, that Parton part smacked of Nightmare City! And why MY Waylon albums? Why wouldn't they have just sent Chauffeur James out to get their own? I couldn't say, yet mysteriously, all four of these Waylon discs were missing in the morning and I discovered that I now had some rather interesting bruises.

At any rate, I just recently reacquired those four Waylon albums that were stolen from me, by purchasing THE COMPLETE MCA RECORDINGS. And I gotta tell ya, they sound every bit as good as I remembered. Well, to be Cowboy Code honest, Disc One (WOLF & TOUGH) is a bit uneven. Oh, heck yeah, there are some first-rate Waylon cuts here: The bittersweet WHERE DOES LOVE GO?; the barking THAT DOG WON'T HUNT; the humorously sexy I'VE GOT ME A WOMAN; the #1 C&W hit ROSE IN PARADISE, with its nimble, smoky Country pickin'; and the raw, fully rollin' and half rockin' duet with Johnny "Man In Black" Cash, EVEN COWGIRLS GET THE BLUES.

But while Waylon's terrifically expressive baritone rumbles through everything with its trademark intensity that conveys an "approach cautiously" warning, there is some (what I would term) "filler" here. This is not a defanged Waylon, but a Waylon perhaps a bit long in the tooth, fairly tame and satisfied to just snarl from his comfortable spot on the front porch rather than charging across the yard to take a big ol' bite out of some knuckleheaded trespasser.

But now we address Disc Two, and the return of the DANGEROUS OUTLAW, the REAL Waylon "Waymore" Jennings:

Track one through eleven constitutes Waylon's audiobiography, A MAN CALLED HOSS; each song representing a chapter in his legendary life. It opens with LITTLEFIELD, a high-powered Country Swing piece that has the sweet fiddle juxtaposed with Waylon's "bulldozing" electric guitar clearing the way and announcing the Outlaw's return in no uncertain terms: "I'll bet I was the only boy that was ever expelled from Sunday school / Lover, fighter, wild horse-rider, and purdy dern good windmill-maker / Look out world, here I come!"

The whole album's a winner: Sad, rough and rowdy, tender, and just flat-out rocking. "Sometimes it's hard to live like I was raised, trying to survive these modern days the old-fashioned way", Waylon sings in the closer, WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?, just before launching into a full-blown electric guitar and tenor saxophone blitzkrieg to the fade out, and tearing us a new one in the process. (Crank it up!)

And if anything, FULL CIRCLE (tracks 12-21) is even better: "I was so ugly, the doctor slapped my Mama when I was born" is the hilarious opening line of TROUBLE MAN, which quickly transforms into a ferocious Maverick Man anthem. Watch it! This ol' boy ain't bluffin'; this one BITES! And Waylon never sounded better.

FULL CIRCLE moves from touching ballads evoking pathos to blistering Country rockers with Waylon's guitar snapping and that guttural growl in his voice enough to scare the hell out of demons!

Shortly after FULL CIRCLE's release, I went to see the Outlaw perform at a small club in Los Angeles. On the way there, I wondered if he'd have enough guts to sing HOW MUCH IS IT WORTH TO LIVE IN L.A.?, a funny critique of Angeleno insanity. Ha! He wasn't called an "outlaw" for nothing...he sang it, much to my delight. (And I didn't see anyone stand up and tell him, "Hey, you can't do that song HERE!")

This collection closes with the bonus track, a duet with John Anderson, SOMEWHERE BETWEEN RAGGED AND RIGHT - a real wang dang doodle!

WAYLON JENNINGS: THE COMPLETE MCA RECORDINGS (including a nice booklet) is a great buy, whether you're already a Waylon fan, or just about to discover the greatest singer to ever emerge from the Country-Western genre. I'm so glad to have this music again after that unfortunate little incident way back when.

Wait a minute - there's someone at the door. It sounds like a gaggle of girls. Probably selling Girl Scout cookies. I'll be right back...

5 out of 5 stars Four albums from the eighties.......2005-04-19

Waylon's legacy ultimately rests with the music he recorded for RCA, particularly his peak years of the mid-seventies, but fans should not overlook his four albums for MCA - Will the wolf survive, Hanging tough, A man called Hoss and Full circle - all presented here in their entirety. As if that were not enough, there are a couple of bonus tracks including a duet with Johnny Cash, Even cowgirls get the blues, which appeared on a duet album (Heroes) that they recorded for the Columbia label.

Highlights include Rose in Paradise (a country number one hit) and Baker Street (a cover of the Gerry Rafferty classic), but perhaps the most interesting aspect of this collection is the third of the four albums, A man called Hoss. Legend has it that Waylon thought about writing his autobiography but that doing it properly would bring libel actions by several people (although he eventually wrote that book before he died). He therefore decided (at the time) to do a musical audio-biography instead, hence the album. Of course, an album can never explore the depths that a book can but it is still fascinating.

Some of the music has a definite eighties feel to it but Waylon's fan should still find plenty to enjoy here. Nevertheless, anybody just starting to collect Waylon's music should begin with his seventies music before worrying about this.

For Waylon's fans, this easily justifies five stars.

5 out of 5 stars A different Waylon..........2004-07-19

This was a different era for Waylon. He moved to MCA, was using many studio musicians (but he still used his bass player, Jerry Bridges, studio ace and Waylon regular Reggie Young, and even the future head of his horn section, Jim Horn), and didn't start introducing his own compositions, really, until the last two albums, A Man Called Hoss and Full Circle which, in my opinion, are the two best of his MCA era.

Even though he was moving back to a fuller, more polished sound with his last few RCA albums, the sound with MCA was... quite different. In a way, it was the Nashville Sound all over again. Waylon said in his autobiography that he didn't feel right with these albums -- he felt like he wasn't good enough, in a way. I believe he said his heavy smoking was hurting his voice, and it could be heard. In my opinion, he turns out some of the best vocal performances of his career on these albums. His voice was once again sounding fresh and rich -- sober, if you like.

The sound here is fine. It's DDD (all digital), so don't look for the analog warmth that you might hear on Honky Tonk Heroes or the DCC Dreaming My Dreams, because you won't find it. The last two albums don't sound as sterile. They sound much more natural. A Man Called Hoss is just a great sounding album. As we progress through the set the electronic drums and big digital reverb sound goes away a bit and, like I said, the sound is quite good on the last two albums. From a technical perspective, these are well produced albums, but, of course, there are some '80s sounds here, particularly the electronic drums. Waylon's performances are fantastic, though, and that's all that matters.

I have given this set 5 stars because any Waylon fan would, I imagine, be very pleased to have these four albums on a two CD set. The bonus tracks are also very nice. If you're familiar with Waylon's MCA years, this set will be a welcome addition to your collection. Don't buy this expecting the "outlaw" Waylon, because he's not here. But Waylon didn't have to be an outlaw to be badass, and he proves that on these albums. The production is slick, many of the songs (particularly on the first two albums) are from outside songwriters, and sometimes there are sounds that you wouldn't expect from Waylon's music, but overall the music is very good because of one key factor: Waylon Arnold Jennings.

Waylon fans, you'll love this.

(By the way, does anyone else think the title "Full Circle" was Waylon's way of saying he realised he was back to the "Nashville Sound" and whatnot and was not pleased with it? Food for thought...)

4 out of 5 stars 80's Waymore.......2004-06-09

This album is a collection of the recordings that Waylon made for MCA upon leaving RCA in 1986 after 20+ years with Nipper. You will find all four MCA albums in their entirety plus two bonus tracks. These records marked a departure from Waylon's approach to making records during his heyday. For example, there is a much greater dependence on/use of studio musicians and Nashville songwriters. The one exception to this from a songwriting standpoint is the audio-biography "A Man Called Hoss".~ The albums were co-produced by Waylon & Jimmy Bowen, recorded digitally and have a very clean, crisp sound to them.
There are a few interesting covers, such as Los Lobos' 'Will The Wolf Survive', Gerry Rafferty's 'Baker Street' and Sammy Johns' 'Chevy Van'. Personally, I think the two best of these albums are his MCA debut, "Will The Wolf Survive" and $Q

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy Rogers Legacy.......2001-02-22

This is Jimmy Rogers complete output of work from Chess Records. Muscians take note in the many styles that Jimmy encompasses throughtout his work which shows through the sophistication of the songs(learning from the likes of T-bone Walker and Tampa Red).Just a very enjoyable body of work by one of the Blues greats who influenced people like Freddie King and Otis Rush. Excellant singer also!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Yet another South Side star shines brightly..........1998-12-28

Like his Muddy Waters Band contemporary, Little Walter, some of Jimmy Rogers' best work was done before he went solo. After "Luedella" broke in 1956, Rogers had already become yet another star in the galaxy that was launched by Waters' seminal band. Although the two Chess "Muddy Waters: His Best" would serve as the ideal introduction for both Rogers and Little Walter, I think this disk would be a good buy for anyone interested in Rogers guitar style or anyone that might be interested in hearing the Muddy Waters Band without Muddy Waters on lead vocals. Recommended, but not essential though the craftsmaship is, of course, superb and influential throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Bing and the Andrews Sisters complete!.......2005-06-16

This album (CD) is fantastic! I listen to it frequently. My favorite track is "Jingle Bells," my very favorite rendition of this song. I also love the outtake at the end of the last disc where they mess up Jingle Bells! Every song is wonderful. I am a big fan of both der Bingle and the Andrews Sisters. Their style together is jazzy, light and I will bet it helped a lot of people through some tough years! I didn't know the discs were arranged chronologically until I read one of the other reviews, but I will pull mine out and listen with that in mind! I say buy this if you are a fan of either Bing or the sisters. You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat, fun music with class and style.......2002-07-29

Bing and the Andrews sisters made such great music together and all of it is collected together on this double CD. There are also a few out-takes (they call them blow-ups on the track listing, and they appear near the end of CD 2) and they provide further proof of just how much FUN Bing and the ladies had recording this music.

The official recordings are presented in chronological order, beginning with Ciribiribin and Yodelin' jive, which provided them with a double-sided hit in 1939 and 1940, up to and beyond their last hit (Sparrow in the tree top, a top ten hit from 1951). In between, you get all the classics, including two number ones (A hot time in the town of Berlin and the often-covered Don't fence me in).

The music is happy, upbeat, swinging, good-time music of the type you expect from the Andrews sisters. If you want the slow, romantic stuff, look elsewhere (including Bing's solo recordings).

The sisters really had only one way of singing, and they were better than anybody else at their type of music. Their contribution to popular music remains unique to this day, and I find their music very addictive. They will always have a special place in my CD collection.

Bing was more versatile. He could sing all types of song, but he just fitted in with the sisters when he sang with them. What he added to their music was a certain gravitas, and the combination made for some of the best - and most enjoyable - music ever recorded.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST of both worlds.......2002-05-30

When I listened to this CD, I was like a child at Christmas. I could not wait to hear the next song! I happened to be in the Air Force at the time, and I knew that my Grandmother had always liked them. So I bought this CD and I was blown over. This CD has everything. And the harmony is legendary, (they ARE the Andrews Sisters, after all!). From the Christmas classics of "Jingle Bells" to "(There's a Hot Time) in the town of Berlin", I know that anyone who wants to hear the core of wartime music on the civilian side should have this CD in their collection!

5 out of 5 stars World would be a better place if everyone listened to this.......2002-01-20

If I'm down I listen to the Andrews Sisters and "bing! --I'm happy." (get it?) Inspiring music, full of happiness and wonder! Sometimes I cry because it's so beautiful! It's the sound of birds chirping in the spring -- the sound of horses' hooves and people laughing. When you listen you feel as if the whole world is your friend. The best remedy yet invented. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Gets into your head.......2001-10-02

Crosby and the Andrews Sisters were made for each other.
The harmony is great, the music unforgetable.

One small warning... If you find tunes get stuck in your head,
beware... this album is full of tunes that just won't go away
(not that you'd want them to anyway.)

From the songs I knew and have always loved to those that I
had never heard before... There isn't a bad one in the bunch.

The first song on Album 2 has been running thru my head for
days. "Tomorrow Morning is My Wedding Day" and I don't recall
ever hearing it before. The last 5 cuts on Album 2 are bloopers
and show the great fun Bing and the girls had making these
records.

They all started on vinal, but have beeen remastered to be
better than ever.

If you pass this one up you'll end up kicking yourself...

Although Buddy Guy's first singles were for Chicago's Cobra Records, the bulk of his work in the early to mid-'60s was for the Windy City's most important blues label, Chess. Much of his work for the Chess brothers was as a sideman, but this collection of Guy's own singles and alternate or unreleased takes showcases the stinging guitar tone and preaching vocal style that were to become his trademarks. Among these recordings are the earliest versions of his signature tunes "I Got My Eyes On You," "Stone Crazy," "Watch Yourself," "When My Left Eye Jumps," and the nervy cry for revenge "My Time After Awhile." --Ted Drozdowski

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A little too complete.......2005-01-26

Even the liner notes say it, " Buddy Guy was always the proverbial odd man out during the Chess Years. " These recordings taken from when Guy was basically a top side man for Chess show an artist who was trying to find his place at a company that didn't know what to do with him. Wacky dance songs like "Slop Around" and novelties like "I Dig Your Wig," are mixed with great tunes like "My Mother," and "I Suffer the Blues." This one is really for the Buddy Guy fan who wants everything he has recorded.

3 out of 5 stars Redundant.......2003-07-18

Interesting as a complete collection of George 'Buddy' Guy's Chess sides may seem, there are just too many lesser songs here.
You should go get the Chess anniversary album "Buddy's Blues" instead. That one hand-picks the best of these cuts, and virtually everything worthwhile is there. I own both albums, and I only ever listen to the songs on "Buddy's Blues", so don't worry about missing out on anything.

3 out of 5 stars Complete, but not all is good.......2000-12-22

First of all, Buddy didnt became a legend for these recordings. They didnt sold either. Only on a few of these tracks you'll hear the guitar genious that he is. He became what he is for his live performances, on which he could get loose and play what he wanted. The recordings are good and historical, but not good enough for a 2 CD set which is too expensive by the way. Go get the very best of buddy guy, which contains some live tracks and some tracks of the 70's that do showcase his guitar abilities at his best. This cd is only for completists: it contains leave my girl alone, and going to school (which is mary had a little lamb), which is a better version than the one on a man and the blues album.

5 out of 5 stars VERY ESSENTIAL!.......2000-04-18

BUDDy GUY IS ONE OF THE GREATEST BLUES VOCALIST&Of COURSE GUITARIST.THIS Two-Disc Set is a Must.IT Never Loses It's Spark.Buddy Guy is A Musical FOrce.

5 out of 5 stars Don't even know what to say! ok here goes.......1999-10-03

Buddy Guy is the greatest. the few lousy songs on this album (lip lap louie, baby baby baby baby) are completely overshadowed by the rest of the songs on the album which are great. "Keep it TO Myself", "My Mother", and "She suits me to a Tee" are three of the songs I had not heard before owning this album and they are all amazing, especially vocally, and the horns on My Mother are powerful. Of course "First Time I Met the Blues", "When my Left Eye Jumps", "Let Me Love You Baby", "Watch Yourself" and "My Time after a while" are classics. Anyone with an ounce of soul will love this album. There are only a couple bad songs out of 47.

They were only together for about a year in the early '40s, but the Almanac Singers' repertoire, and individual members, would go on to much later greatness in the decades that followed. Comprised of folk legends Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Pete Hawes, and Millard Lampell, the group performed mostly at left-wing political conventions and labor rallies with a set list that mixed the traditional with the political. The songs contained on Complete General Recordings are some of their finest moments, and many of the tunes would see later life covered by the Weavers (Seeger and Hays's future band) and even--in the case of "House of the Rising Sun"--the Animals. Produced by another music legend, Alan Lomax, Their Complete General Recordings is an essential document of folk music's history and a great chance to these classic numbers in a raw, unadulterated form. The Almanac Singers may not have sold as many records as their contemporaries (blame that on the unpopular pacifism they preached as the United States entered World War II), but their versions of these tunes are simply timeless. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Piece of Music History.......2005-06-26

This is an outstanding collection of American folk songs, sung with great skill and enthusiasm by the Almanac Singers. The Almanac Singers were the predecessors to the the great folk group, The Weavers, and included Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Lee Hays, Pete Hawes, and Millard Lampell. It is a must for those who understand the rich heritage of American folk tradition, and who appreciate the early stirrings of the 'folk revival' that gave birth to such popular performers as Peter, Paul, and Mary, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Gordon Lightfoot, and of course, Bob Dylan, as well as those on the cutting edge of the protest movement that were not so 'mainstream,' such as Tom Paxton and Phil Ochs. Woody and Pete are the daddies, or perhaps grandaddies now, of them all, and on this album you can hear Woody in his prime, and Pete in his younger days. It's a treasure!

4 out of 5 stars Piece of folk history, but the other CD is a better buy..........2003-09-21

The Almanac Singers were a commune, collecting some superbly talented artists like the young Lee Hays, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie, joined by a rotating group of competent supporting musicians. In 1940-41 they had several recording sessions and performed mostly for labor union rallies and left-wing political meetings. This CD features their versions of traditional sailor songs and agricultural ditties, rather than the controversial union stuff and pre-WWII neutrality songs and early WWII anti-facist tunes. For one-take sessions, done on the lowest of budgets, these renditions are pretty wonderful. If you just want to have a sample of what the Almanacs, who pioneered the folk recording group genre, and paved the way for The Weavers a decade later, were like, it will do nicely. However, if you want an Almanac CD which presents 29 of the total of 35 tracks the group ever preserved, and includes the union and political stuff along with these songs, too, then go buy the disc titled "Songs of Protest." It is a great value. (By the way, the sound quality on both of the available Almanacs CD's is surprisingly good.)
