Good Old Road Country.......2006-11-13
When most folks think of Truckin' music, Red Sovine and Dave Dudley usually are first to come to mind. Well, here is a great voice that combines the gritty sound of the road with the bounce of Bakersfield; an incredible combination that resulted in the most recognizable figures of '60's country. This was Red's first album, and the folks at Sundazed Records deserve the highest praise for re-releasing this one. There are 12 songs here, including the Tommy Collin's penned, "Roll, Truck, Roll". In addition, there are a few standards/favorites, including: "Highway Man", "Give me 40 Acres", and of course "Six Days on the Road". Great music, and to top it off, the folks at Sundazed used the original album cover (front & back), including the liner notes. A+
Bakersfield twang meets trucker country.......2004-11-30
Simpson was already minting his Bakersfield legend when he recorded this debut for Capitol in 1966. He had regular gigs around town (notably replacing Buck Owens at the Blackboard) and was one of Owens' regular songwriting partners, hitting with "Gonna Have Love" and later with "Sam's Place." He'd already written a few trucking songs when producer Ken Nelson came looking for someone to record an entire trucking-themed LP.
The album kicks off with a fine cover of Terry Fell's "Truck Drivin' Man" (the arrangement of which was borrowed in large part by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen a few years later) before swinging into Tommy Collins' title tune. Simpson gives voice to Collins' weary driver, contrasting a man's initial dream of freedom with the wreckage wrought by an absentee father. The collateral damage of the trucker's mobile life was never depicted with more clarity than on this recording.
Simpson sings fine tear-in-your beer country ballads like "Truck Driver Blues" and "My Baby's Waitin'," but there are happy-go-lucky moments, too. The Bakersfield Sound band lends an electric edge of bravado to Dave Dudley's "Six Days on the Road" and Simpson-Owens' originals "Happy Go Lucky Truck Driver" and "Runaway Truck." Even the explosive load of "Nitro Express" and novelty hitch of "Give Me Forty Acres" rev up terrific dance beats and gem-perfect stereo production from Nelson. A classic of the genre, this is not only one of the best truckin' albums ever recorded, but an essential of the Bakersfield country canon.

When Ralph Stanley makes a gospel record, expectations are justifiably high. No artist alive has done more to keep the old-time religion central to bluegrass or has cut as much vital, enthralling gospel music as the good doctor. While the Ages Roll On is a worthy addition to Stanley's oeuvre: timeless in its clarion but understated sound (including three a cappella quartets, arranged by Stanley), and as devastating in its recognition of mortality as it is uplifting in its hope for understanding and forgiveness. One might lament the lack of Stanley's signature banjo work (present only on one track), but there's more than adequate compensation in his vigorous lead singing (as good as any he's done in recent years), and in the loose, comfortable backing of the road-schooled Clinch Mountain Boys. Into his sixth decade of bluegrass, Stanley preaches a gospel everyone can share: the rapture of music straight from the soul. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
Purchased this CD for my Dad who is 81 Years Young.......2002-05-25
My Dad heard one of the songs from this CD on his local radio station in Woodstock, VA. He asked me if I could find this CD for him. He is a long-time fan of Ralph Stanley and his beloved Bluegrass music.
In May 2002 I took my Dad and Mom on a trip to his home in Wise County, VA. I was very lucky to fulfill my Dad's life time dream of personally meeting Ralph Stanley. My Dad was given Dr. Stanley's home phone number by a friend. Dad called him and Dr. Stanley graciously invited him to visit his home and spent some of his precious time with my parents. I will always be grateful to Dr. Stanley for making my Dad's dream come true.
An American Treasure.......2000-09-06
The great Ralph Stanley has come out with another gem of an album. While in his 70's, Stanley still sings with the enthusiasm of a man in his 20's.
"While The Ages Roll On" produces neither any gimmicks nor surprises. The music contained on this album is what fans have come to expect from Ralph: solid, inspirational old-time/bluegrass music from one of the "Founding Fathers" of the genre. As Jim Lauderdale stated, Ralph is the "King of Mountain Soul", and he proves it again on this all-gospel release.
From the opening notes of "Dad's Old Rocky Field", this album is a pleasure to listen to. If I had to sum up the feel of this album in two words, they would be "gentle" and "inspirational". The tracks on this album seem to emanate a sense of comfort and pleasure. The Clinch Mountain Boys(including Ralph II, veteran Jack Cooke, and ace fiddler James Price)are, as always, at the top of their game, providing Ralph with impeccable pickin' and singin'. The three acapella tracks on "While The Ages Roll On" showcase a stunning display of harmony that will send chills down your back. Ralph and the boys utilize four-part harmony singing on almost every track to great effect. I thought only angels could sing so beautifully. No matter what your religious beliefs, you will be touched and transported to a heavenly place upon hearing this album.
Another reason I would suggest this album in particular is because of the sound quality. Some of Ralph's(and the Stanley Brothers) albums are outstanding but naturally lack the technological advantages of today's digital equipment. On "When The Ages Roll On", the sound is crystal clear and it sounds as if Ralph and the boys are right there in the room singing to you.
I was fortunate enough to get my copy of this album signed recently at a bluegrass festival. Ralph is a legend, a gentleman, and an American treasure. Now only if we could get the mass radio to play some good music like this.... (Sorry, I still haven't figured out how to separate my reviews into paragraphs!)

Hot Licks, Cold Steel, and Trucker's Favorites.......2000-11-09
One way to escape the cheesy pop that passes for today's country music is to listen to some truck drivin' tunes that speak to the blue collar roots of real country music. This fine collection contains a number of classics updated by contemporary artists as well as tunes by the original artists. Highlights of this CD are Junior Brown's collaboration with the great Red Simpson on Red's classic "Nitro Express" which is as good as their collaboration on "Semi-Crazy" from the album by the same name. The Yayhoos update the genre with their raucous take on "Highway Junkie" while Bill Kirchen gears it up on "Semi-Truck." The songs by the women seem weaker to me because truck driving tunes just sound better when sung by a man. These songs tend to fall into the I'm-left-all-alone-while-my-man-is-on-the-road category like Kay Adams "Mama Was a Rock."
But that's a minor quibble. Get yourself this collection of truck driving CDs for your next long road trip; it'll make the hours on the freeway fly by.

AMAZON.COM Has The Greatest Truckdrivin CD Of All-Time!!.......1998-12-10
This album is the best thing that has ever happened to truckdrivers since coffee and rest stops. Rig Rock Deluxe captures the feelings, plights of courage, and comradere of the unsung american hero- The Truckdriver. This album explores issues of the "absent husband syndrome" in a jammin song by Kay Adams and BRS-59, and existential spiritual questions that we all ponder as we trek across the open road, "Will There Be Big Rigs in Heaven" by Buck Owens and His Buckaroos. A great must hear album. Makes a great gift for anyone who has driven over eight hours to get somewhere. Check it out!
The best cd I bought all year!.......1998-11-27
On the advice of Bill Kirchen, I bought this cd at a gig in April. Yee Haw! From start to finish, an honest to goodness romp through the world of trukin'. The absence of cheesy country pop is a welcome change you'll enjoy. Try the first two songs for a traditional sound, then get ready for some toe tapping hooks in "Diesel, Diesel, Diesel" or "Semi Truck". If you need a pick me up from the perfectly sad "Miss Marie and the Bedford Blaze", try "I'm Coming Home" or "Truck Driving Man" for some hot guitar to put you in the mood to wave at passing semi trucks just to hear their horn blow in the distance.

Just enjoy the show.......2005-11-24
Being a converted Little Feat fan just for a few years now, it is quite funny to see the intensity of the argumentation from both sides: great stuff (although bootleg) opposed too illegal junk with poor sound quality....
Of course it isn't right that bandmembers do not receive royalties from this cd, on the other hand it truly is a great concert from the early Feats when they still sounded unpolished. The argument that the sound quality was a reason for Barrere not to put it out themselves seems a load of crap judging from the poor sound quality of some of the Raw/Ripe Tomato cd's, which I also love, be it just for music historical reasons.....
Are we all listening to the same disc?.......2002-04-27
After reading all the reviews here (most being very bitter) I had to wonder - Is everyone mad at the fact that the disc is REALLY poor quality, or is the fact that the band isn't getting any money from it. The truth: This disc is great! I wasn't around in the Feat's early days, but if this is what the fans consider "bad", bring on the really good stuff! I've heard enough bootleg recordings to know what a soundboard show sounds like, and this is not a "muddy mix" or "poorly played" as other reviewers have said. I'm sure the band has many unreleased live recordings that are better, but until they are "officially" released, this will be on my stereo over and over...
Why is this thinly-disguised bootleg still on Amazon?.......2002-04-20
I love Little Feat and all of their live recordings. Which is why I am telling you don't buy this [junk]. Instead, run, don't walk, to buy the newly reissued and expanded Waiting for Columbus (2 CD set with tons of outtakes of excellent, five-star quality), then get Live from Neon Park (excellent live recording from current lineup)then get Hoy Hoy (lotsa live and studio rarities), then if you must, get Expanded Editions (decent live stuff from current band, a bargain). THEN, join the HOY HOY list at [their website] and start trading live recordings expressly authorized by the band. There are amazing live recordings out there, including the very show stolen for this CD, which admittedly is a fine show.
What ?.......2002-03-08
After reading some of the bad customer reviews for this CD,I had to submit my own thoughts. First of all, I'm so apolitical that I couldn't even muster the will to not buy the CD (even if some people have urged boycotting it). If Paul Barrere and the other members aren't getting compensation, I wish that they would dig up some other tapes of shows from that time period and start making some money. I know I'd buy 'em !
This particular show is the best example of Little Feat yet released: smoking guitar parts from Barrere and George, incredible peaks generated by some of the best interplay between musicians heard on any live recording,(see Cat Fever, On the Way Down, Dixie Chicken/Tripe Face Boogie), beautifully delivered vocals-- and all contained in a raucous, gritty, club atmosphere. The sound, to me, isn't bootleg quality at all: granted, the sound has a few crackles, and the mix fades in and out a bit on some songs, but the sound is probably very much like it sounded in the club that night-- in any event, as good as any live recordings from 1973.
Man, you can't get any better than Little Feat were that night. I highly recommend this CD.

Music the Whole Family Can Enjoy.......2006-02-17
If you're looking for something that isn't Eminem to play for your kids in the car, perhaps some good ol' trucking music is your speed. My two boys (3 & 5) love to sing along. Give me 40 Acres is a huge hit, and some of the ballads are laugh out loud corny. Definitely worth the minimal investment for all these great tunes.
Great Songs but incomplete info.......2005-08-14
Wow! What a great compiliation of trucking songs. It's a pity they didn't include more artist info & recording dates. (We IPod'ers need this info.)
hit the road jack.......2002-02-28
this could be consolidated to an AMAZING single cd compilation. as it stands, there's a lot of filler on this; some of which has little or nothing to do with truck driving. kansas city? tie a yellow ribbon? a harmonica driven version of take me home country roads? damn it, neither john denver nor tony orlando was ever behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler, so why are they here??? other gripes include duplication of the same song by different artists in basically the same arrangements, and some just plain ordinary boring numbers. that said, you get lots of red sovine & dave dudley, some cool tunes by minnie pearl, grandpa jones, and the willis brothers, and a killer (no pun intended) stretch on disc 2 concerning trucks wrecks. unless you are an insane truck driving music collector (and frankly, who isnt?) (billy joel isnt, thats fer sure), this will be good enough for you. PUT DOWN THE STROKES CD AND BUY THIS, YA PUTZ!!
The best truckin' value for your dollar.......2000-01-13
Largely (though by no means entirely) made up of gems from the great Starday catalogue, "Truckin' On" has its flaws but probably stands as the most complete collection of trucker country to be found. At 52 songs on 2 discs the pluses are numerous, including most of the great hits from the likes of Red Sovine, the Willis Brothers, Del Reeves, and other giants of the genre. The collection also includes several lesser-known tracks, such as Minnie Pearl's rarely-heard "Giddy-Up-Go Answer." There are two main complaints about the collection. For one, a number of tracks are represented not in their original versions but with re-recordings. "Movin' On" is here, for instance, but as recorded by Mike Lunceford, not in its original Merle Haggard rendition. Same with "Convoy" and a few others. In addition, a few important artists are completely unrepresented, including Red Simpson and Dick Curless. These are minor complaints, though. For $20 you get 2 1/2 hours of trucker country, most of which is top-notch, and that's value-for-money in my book any day of the week.

2 classic albums from a Bakersfield Sound pioneer.......2001-07-28
This CD is a twofer of these albums from 1966, remastered from 1999: "The Man Behind The Badge" which is an album of songs about police and the law and features "Highway Patrol" a top 40 hit for Red which would later be covered by Junior Brown, the classic "Johnny Law" and others, and "Roll, Truck, Roll", an album of songs about trucks and truck driving, his forte, which features the hit title track and others which the majority of the album, minus "Big Mack," "My Baby's Waitin'" and "Runaway Truck" are on Razor & Tie's US domestic anthology "The Best of Red Simpson: Country Western Truck Drivin' Singer." The liner notes and packaging are well done as they basically reproduce the front and back covers of the original vinyl issues of both albums and the sound quality is top notch. No bonus tracks are added as the albums speak for themselves. A classic CD for all Bakersfield Sound and truck driving country music fans.

Susie Suh and the bar-she's.......2005-09-16
Annie Lin wrote and recorded Truck Was Struck while enrolled fulltime as a J.D. law student in Houston. The cd is basically a song-suite that imagines a chain of events set in motion by an auto accident, as a metaphor for relationships, kinda like the movie Crash. The title of the cd comes from the concise and slightly awkward or esoteric wording of a description of a car crash in her torts class. Annie managed to tour not infrequently while completing her bar studies and then moved to New York City to further her ambitious dual careers. (She is friendly with lawyer/songstress Elizabeth Elmore of The Reputation/Sarge. Not sure if she knows David Scheltzel of Ocean Blue, another lawyer/rocker, or the lawyer dude from Austin Lounge Lizards, she just may). Annie's work can be compared to her idol Lisa Loeb, and also Dar Williams or Ani DiFranco. She often tours as a duo with hip electric cellist Henna Chou, and/or as part of the Asian-American singer-songwriter movement (cf Mike Park, Jenny Choi, Emm Gryner et al). The cd is pretty consistently listenable, is are her live shows. Not sure if she soaked up any real Texas flavor during her southern sojourn -- the one track where she tries to give voice to a local homeless person is the only misfire on the cd. I for one would kinda like to see her take a sabbatical someday in Mississippi and try to record a John Lee Hooker tribute or something bluesy. She's definitely worth keeping an eye on, so check out this cd out, y'all.
