Following the bland, smothering urban-cowboy era of the early 1980s, Randy Travis's loose, flexible vocal phrasing and stripped-down, traditional accompaniment was the breath of fresh air. Along with Dwight Yoakam and George Strait, Travis epitomized the new traditionalism that dominated the remainder of the decade. While his Haggard and Frizzell influences were obvious, his relaxed delivery and flair for understatement set him apart. His voice, plangent and brimming with heart, its twang neither softened nor downplayed over time, remained at the core of his music. Beginning with his first No. 1, "1982," through the snappy "Too Gone Too Long" and the exquisite "I Told You So," Travis and producer Kyle Lehning created a body of music that has stood the test of time, not to mention more recent trends. While this collection isn't complete, it's a fine survey of the pinnacle of Travis's career. --Rich Kienzle

Enough terrific songs to deserve the rating.......2002-04-11
-- Forever and Ever - Perfect country song about unconditional love
-- No Place Like Home - Yes, a traditional song, but sung with a lot of quiet dignity.
-- Is It Still Over? - Flat out one of the funniest songs ever written. A love song for couch potatoes.
-- Promises - You're not going to find a song where the singer reaches deeper into his soul
These are the standouts, and the rest of them make for a very enjoyable package.

Neo Traditionalist Supreme.......2005-10-24
Not until his latest ..........2001-09-22
Not until his recent release,"Live..It Was Just A Matter Of Time" have I enjoyed an album more. Every one of the songs here on "Greatest #1 Hits, is a clear example of what good music, and talent can provide.Hours upon hours of enjoyable listening pleasure!
Now on Live" one can hear the continued allegience to what country music use to sound like. More importantly, you will quickly come to understand, why this particular artist has been able to endure, when so many others have long faded into the fartherest recesses of our memories.
If you love this Greatest #1 Hits, you will surly want "Live" which also comes in DVD format as well as CD,Cassette or VHS.
In finishing this review, I just want to say, Randy did the industry a favor once, now it is time for the Industry (including broadcasting) to do him one, and start playing this mans music once again, for all to hear and enjoy!
