With this elusive image, Ana Egge captures the intoxicating, evanescent spark of passion in "Straight To My Head", the first single from her stunning release Out Past the Lights. The CD marks the end of Ana's own vanishing act of sorts. With three breathtaking albums under her belt and having shared spotlights opening shows for Shawn Colvin, Richard Thompson, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Jane Siberry, George Jones, and more, Ana opted for a low profile. Known for building her own guitar, Ana turned to building herself a house in the New Mexico desert outside of Silver City. Then, leaving her beloved white truck and motorcycle behind, she pulled up stakes for the relative anonymity of Brooklyn. Over the next three years, Ana played elite New York clubs while impressing a dazzling array of musicians. Among them was Out Past the Lights co-producer and bassist Jason Mercer, for years the anchor of Ani Difranco's band.

Together, Egge and Mercer have crafted a rare gem. The Boston Globe writes "[Now age 28] Egge has the voice of a woman at least twice her age--and that's intended as a compliment. Her smoky, powerful pipes are perfectly suited to her country/bluesy songs about unrequited love." With Out Past the Lights, Ana Egge shatters the typical folky singer-songwriter mold with a collection of mesmerizing songs that, as in the opening track "Apple Tree", embark upon a journey through dreams filled with lush orchards, exhilarating backroad motorcycle rides, virgin snowfalls, shotgun weddings, deserted cityscapes, desperate rural hollows, starry seas, and the enduring icons of New York--the City of Liberty.

The Universe Expands.......2005-04-17

"River Under the Road" had a song "Made of Iron" that went to the top of my personal top ten & is one of my all-time favorites. Ana Egge, the North Dakota girl, has become a breathtaking artist on this delightful set. "Out Past the Lights" brings together her strengths. Ana's voice has a wistful quality that always makes her seem like she is mining the depths of emotion. "Straight to My Head" is one of the more rock-oriented tracks with Ana's edgy electric lead and her vocal filled with desire & longing, "All you need is love tonight; I wanna be as soft as the air, disappear before your eyes & wake up with you in your bed." "Wedding Dress" is a great folk ballad that relates the story of a couple & how their lives are impacted by marriage. Egge takes routine details of her characters' daily life and poetically weaves them into powerful emotional images, "Anne Marie lives in Kansas City; she's a Christian; she loves living there; She says, 'I'm flying back to Brooklyn,' rolls her eyes & fixes her hair, cleans houses with her Mom for work, goes to school & dreams of dirt." "Sailor" has an exquisite melody with Egge's simple acoustic guitar & vocals communicating great longing, "Some questions are only to keep us thinking, the universe expands & we keep blinking." "Ways of Waiting" is another exquisite strong track where Egge sings as if an observer watching a performer, "These ways of waiting, now they're rushing out, I won't make a sound 'til I see your face & say your name out loud; My imagination made me your girl, such a fascination with your world." All of the tracks on this set are good from the acoustic "Birds" to the rocky "Closer to the Motor." Ana Egge continues her artistic journey on this CD with incredible results. Bravo!
