John Anderson - Greatest Hits

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
In the late 1980s, John Anderson found himself in the awkward position of seeing the country charts dominated by the new traditionalism, and yet he couldn't buy a hit. Anderson refused to give in, however, and he signed with the fifth company of his career, a brand new label called BNA, and threw the dice one more time. His gratifyingly successful years there have been summed up on Greatest Hits. As good as the songs are, what really makes these hits great is the combination of Anderson's rich, pure-country, baritone drawl, and the pumping swamp rhythms he adds to all his uptempo numbers. Only a handful of country stars could round 15 songs from 1992-96 as impressive as these. Unfortunately, BNA includes his remake of "Swingin'," which sounds busy and less focused than the Warner Bros. original. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Got to love John Anderson.......2007-03-29

It's got Black Sheep and Wild and Blue. The only thing that's missing is Chicken Truck.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't begin to cover all of John's great songs..........2007-03-11

This is a very nice collection, but how long do we have to wait for someone to put out a truly comprehensive anthology of John's work? This is simply 'a few' of John's great hits. This guy is a pure country traditionalist, one of the very best ever, along the lines of Jones and Haggard...even the 'Anthology' double CD is lacking...I have been listening to John since his first vinyl release with his great hit, 'She Just Started Liking Cheatin' Songs' from 1980! It will take at least 2 CDs, maybe 3, to truly do John Anderson credit. In the meantime, this CD, the Antholgy CD and one or two other Greatest hits CDs will have to suffice.

C'mon folks, how about someone putting together the real thing, a full compilation of great music from at least 5 different labels? It can be done, and John Anderson deserves it!

This one gives you a wonderful 'taste' of John's talent, but it leaves out at least half of his career thus far!

In my opinion you wouild do better with a copy, new or used, of the 'Anthology' CD, and as noted, that too leaves much to be desired. Let's hope that someone gets it right soon...

5 out of 5 stars John Anderson-Greatest Hits.......2007-01-12

Some albums have one or two songs that are appealing. This one is great all the way through. I particularly wanted the song Seminole Wind, but I found I enjoyed many of the others almost as much.

5 out of 5 stars John's early classic hits.......2005-08-08

For reasons only Amazon knows, the pages for John's original greatest hits album on Warner (covering the early eighties) and his later greatest hits album for BNA (covering the nineties comeback) are linked, so reviews for either album are listed under both. This review refers to the earlier Warner collection though I plan to expand the review eventually to cover the comeback hits if I can't persuade Amazon to de-link the pages (I've tried before and failed) - in that unlikely event, I'll do a separate review and remove this paragraph from here.

With a voice and musical style that has echoes of, but which is distinct from, Merle Haggard, John Anderson burst on to the country music scene in 1980. He was a regular country hit-maker for much of the eighties but faded towards the end of that decade. He made a successful comeback on a different record label in the nineties.

I quickly became a huge fan of John's music. His debut album was a classic, featuring songs such as 1959, She just started liking cheating songs and (best of all) Your lying blue eyes. All of them became top twenty hits in the country charts. Bigger hits came later including some on this collection but those first three hits are (to my ears) as good as anything else that he ever recorded.

Among those bigger hits are Swinging (the biggest hit John ever had - it crossed over to the American pop charts), I'm just an old chunk of coal, Would you catch a falling star and Black sheep. Later eighties hits can be found on volume 2.

If you love the music of Merle Haggard and George Jones, you'll surely enjoy listening to John Anderson. And if you only buy one collection of John's music, the original Greatest Hits - the one on Warner - is the one to go for until and unless a more comprehensive collection appears. If you enjoy this collection and want to hear more, go for volume 2 or the BNA collection or both.

5 out of 5 stars A must have CD.......2007-01-14

For anyone who likes Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, this CD is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Arthur at his best........2002-03-20

Arthur Fiedler made listening to classical music fun. Try a listen to 'Pomp and Circumstance', one of my favourite pieces of classical music. 'William Tell Overture' shines as does most of the material on this album. Well recorded for it's day. Fiedler is missed.

5 out of 5 stars Fiedler's Finest.......2002-02-16

I had the opportunity of playing in an orchestra under Maestro Fiedler. He was a tough, no nonsense conductor who expected crisp, lyrical, and expressive. His musical interpretations of everything from Sabre Dance to Syncopated Clock; from Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 to his love for the Beatles, sets him as the ruler supreme in pop music. I only hope RCA will continue to reissue his LPs so a new generation knows the man and his music. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars what a collaboration of musical excellence, oh what style!.......1999-06-08

I bought this CD a little over a year ago and it is still among my favorites. "Polvetsian Dances" is excellent no matter what your interests. The full version of "Pomp and Circumstance" as well as "The William Tell Overature" are wonderful; The "Procession of the Nobles" is victorious and galliant; the lyrical complexity of "Farandole" is haunting. This is a brilliant compilation of musical excellence.

4 out of 5 stars Electronic Classics.......2006-12-03

As far as I know, Isao Tomita is not an original artist in the sense that he composes new works. He is, however, an original artist who puts a new spin on existing compositions and reinterprets them in a new and, mostly, delightful way.

The selection on this album come right out of a "pops" concert given by any symphony orchestra but they are not performed my symphonic orchestras. They are performed electronically by Tomita. This results in some parts being more emphasized than one would expect to hear in a concert hall. It is a new experience.

This work is new and different in its presentation. It is quite enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Tomita, Will You Enjoy His Splendor?.......2004-01-08

If you've never heard any Tomita then answer these questions:

1. Do you have a taste for classical music?
Good, you should know some of these peices, and be able to enjoy them.

2. Do you enjoy odd music, peices that are unique?
I personally don't have a taste for synth. But Tomita is very unique and is very enjoyable to listen to.

3. Do you hate pop music?
This shows your intellegence level. Like pop music? Then you are just another sheep and should NOT buy this album. Dislike pop music? You sir or madame may just show a ray of intellegence and should consider this.

This is a nice addition to your collection if you are a serious musician or student of music, (and I don't mean high school band class, I mean like music theory).

Enjoy the sonic explorations into the mind of Tomita.

5 out of 5 stars Complete list of Tomita's classical albums..........2002-03-05

5 stars for the music, but why do all the Tomita compilation CDs have almost the same tracks with so much available?

A big box set of every classical Tomita album would be even better. Most of the CDs out of print for years are absolutely fantastic. Four of his albums would fit two on one CD. Here's the complete list...

Snowflakes Are Dancing 1974 (11 Debussy pieces) The newly remastered CD is an audiophile recording, adds Prelude To The Afternoon of a Faun and is available for a good price.

Pictures At An Exhibition 1975 (Mussorgsky)

Firebird 1976 (Stravinsky: Firebird. Debussy: Prelude To The Afternoon of A Faun. Mussorgsky: Night On Bald Mountain)

The Planets 1976 (Holst)

Kosmos 1978 (Star Wars Title. Space Fantasy- R. Strauss: 2001 Title, Wagner: Ride of The Valkyries and Tannhauser Overture. Honnegar: Pacific 231. Ives: Unanswered Question. Rodrigo: Aranjuez. Grieg: Solveig's Song. Dinicu-Heifetz: Hora Staccato. Bach-Tomita: The Sea Named Solaris)

The Bermuda Triangle 1979 (Sibelius: Valse Triste. And excerpts from... Williams: Close Encounters. Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet, Scythian Suite, Symphonies 5 and 6, Violin Concerto 1. My favorite electronic CD.)

Bolero 1980 (Ravel: Daphis and Chloe. Pavane for A Dead Princess. Bolero. Mother Goose Suite)

The Grand Canyon 1982 (Grofe)

Canon of The Three Stars 1984 (Pachelbel: Canon. Rachmaninoff: Vocalise. Albinoni: Adagio. Bach: Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring. 4 pieces from Villa Lobos: Bachianis Brasileiras 2, 4, and 7)

Live At Linz, Austria 1985 (With speakers on both sides of the Danube River and live soloists. Includes 7 pieces from previous albums plus Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring. Japanese Traditional: Cranes In Their Nest. Vaughn Williams: The Lark Ascending. Wagner: Tristan Und Isolde-Liebestod. Beethoven: Ode To Joy with full Choir.)

Live In New York 1988 (Includes 7 pieces from previous albums plus Dukas: Fanfare. Mahler: Symphony 3 in D Minor - 5th Movement. Traditional: Chinese War Lord Going Home. Gershwin: Rhapsody In Blue. Fisher-Dvorak: Goin' Home. My favorite live concert CDs.)

5 out of 5 stars A millenium must-have........1999-11-05

This is the true reason God invented the CD player. Ravel's "Bolero" and Holst's "Bringer of War" are standouts, in my opinion. If Mr. Tomita is still living, perhaps, he can grace us with Camille Saint-Saens' "Organ Symphony" or "The Carnival of the Animals" electronically interpreted.

5 out of 5 stars Cleverly-synthesized, familiar classical tunes.......1998-11-02

I use this CD with elementary school children. It's classical music with an electronic twist--fun, sometimes surprising, and well-done!

Violinist Nigel Kennedy long stopped annoying or surprising concertgoers and disc buyers with his looks and manners--the cover of this CD pictures him with red and blue paint on his face, and he's biting his violin. If that irritates you, his playing certainly will not. Here, two movements from Vivaldi's Four Seasons act as bookends to, among other pieces: a Satie Gymnopédie, exquisitely played, with lovely embellishments near its close; Vaughan Williams's floating Lark Ascending; a stunning, virtuosic Bach solo (never before released); a soft-edged Bach chorale; a soupy, sentimental "Danny Boy"; a slightly overwrought "Scarborough Fair"; a piece by Kennedy himself; and a few other surprises. Kennedy's tone is lush and warm, and his emotionalism almost never overwhelms the music. Greatest hits? More like greatest encores. But definitely a terrific 71 minutes of fiddling. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-09-28

When I got this CD to use for my "music appreciation" class that I teach to a small group of homeschooled students, I thought I might use just a few of these songs to listen to in class. But we will definitely be spending more time on the whole album--this is one of the best violin solo albums I've heard for a while, and Nigel Kennedy is one of the best violinists I've heard, ever. One can hear the energy and emotion in each song played. The arrangements are beautiful, and the choice of songs on the album are wonderful. This is one to actively "listen to". And yes, I'd love to see a live concert DVD!

5 out of 5 stars Nigel Rules!.......2003-01-28

This is terrific, top to bottom! I can write for hours about the joys of Nigel live, the visual and musical daring, the goose in the arse of most orchestral experiences and the rapturous, clamourous, rock and roll reaction he elicits in the most staid of settings. Classical music was not ready and remains uncertain how to deal with him, mostly because he has the chops and the creativity first and foremost.
This collection underscores his remarkable repertoire. Be it Vivaldi, Beethoven, Kreisler, Elgar or Hendrix, Kennedy upends the expectations of one and all. His intensity is extraordinary, his playfulnesss on stage a joy, his interpretive skills incisive.
At this point, though, what would be even more welcome than this terrific collection, would be a DVD of the man himself in action. I can still hear the crowd at Philadelphia's Academy of Music howling, that's right, howling, for an encore. Sawalisch was not sure what to do. The Orchestra looked stymied. Out came Nigel with the fiddle attached to his forehead. He shouted at the audience that they were possibly further off their rockers than he and then asked if anyone in the orchestra knew any Willie Dixon. One of the double bassists did and they launched into "Gingerale Afternoon." Sheer genius, especially on the heels of Beethoven's volin concerto. Lu himself would have dug it immenseley.
Pick this disc up, then write to his label and insist on a DVD.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Traditional country in the eighties.......2005-08-31

The period covered by this second volume of hits (the mid-eighties) was not quite as successful for John as the early eighties, covered in the first volume, but this is nevertheless a fine collection.

Overall, this is a slightly mellow collection than the first volume although John shows that he can rock, country style, with his brilliant cover of It's all over now, a song generally associated with the Rolling Stones although their version was itself a cover. Another up-tempo classic here is Let somebody else drive, in which John dispenses sound advice about what to do at the end of a drinking session.

The slower songs are excellent including She sure got away with my heart, Down in Tennessee, Honky town crowd, You can't keep a good memory down, Going down hill, I wish I could write you a song and Countrified.

If you've heard some of John's music and like what you've heard, you'll love this set. If you haven't heard him, he sounds somewhat like Merle Haggard although their voices are sufficiently different that you are unlikely to confuse them.

    3 out of 5 stars A few hidden gems.......2004-04-30

First off, forget the generic artwork and the almost non existant notes.

This release is worth getting for 2 songs. One is "Down in Tennessee." This song is the masterpiece John Anderson should be remembered for. Unfortuately, it wasn't much of a hit and is mostly forgotten these days.

The other song is "Let Somebody Else Drive." It is one of those songs you don't realize you have heard until you hear it. It was a staple on country radio in the early 1980's. It really should have been featured in the first Greatest Hits collection, but I guess they needed to leave something for a volume 2. Which is probably a good thing, since Anderson hits dried up, as did most of his creativity, towards the later half of the 80's.

    4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2000-03-09

Somebody should've got away with the opening track. Once past that, this is a fine CD. There are a lot of good, solid country songs (what else would you expect from John Anderson? ) There's slower tunes like the melancholy "Down in Tennessee" and "I Wish I Could Write You a Song". And then there's the rockers such as the hit "Let Somebody Else Drive" and a pull-out-all-the-stops cover of the Rolling Stones tune "I Used to Love Her (but it's all over now)".
