The transformation from veteran Southern rockers into fledgling country artists hasn't required much of a musical shift by the brothers Van Zant. The hard-edged guitar riffing, chip-on-shoulder feistiness, and celebrations of Southern pride on much of the material would have fit just as easily on an album by Lynyrd Skynyrd, the band in which Johnny Van Zant replaced his late brother Ronnie as lead singer. Donnie Van Zant brought a lighter touch to his music in .38 Special, as reflected here in the more melodic balladry of "Things I Miss the Most" and "I Can't Help Myself." By subtracting the extended guitar solos from 1970s Southern rock and adding an occasional banjo break or steel guitar fill, Johnny and Donnie Van Zant extend their appeal across categories as well as generations of fans. Though songs such as "Sweet Mama" and "Plain Jane" rely a little too heavily on cliché, "Takin' Up Space," "Ain't Nobody Gonna Tell Me What to Do," and "Help Somebody" are anthems with the sort of conviction that will inevitably inspire raised fists and chorus sing-a-longs. --Don McLeese

Don't trust this CD or any CD from Sony BMG! They have included malicious "rootkit" spyware on a large number of their music CDs -- It could break your computer!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Rockin Country album.......2006-03-11

I loved it. This is good music. Music you cant help but to sing along to. Songs with attitude and good rhythms and super harmonies.Every song is a good song. You will definitely get your money's worth. I had the privelege of going to their concert recently. They put an incredible amount of energy in everyone of their songs and they reflect that on stage. Hats off to Johnny and Donnie for an album well done that Ronnie would be so proud of.

Yeah < I had sworn off SONY products after purchasing the Foo Fighters last CD and installing it on my computer. I was near lost trying to figure what was going on with my computer as I tried to upload it to my I-Tunes. Tried to follow Sonys directions could not get it to run on Win2000 so read about it on Amazon Music reviews. Tried deleting it and had nothing but problems with my computer (da, da cd drive disappeared). The only thing that saved me was I had Goback installed and I reverted my harddrive to a prior date. Occasionally afterwards my cd drive would dissappear causing me to have to revert my hard drive again. Finally after losing my cd drive happened again & again, after reverting with Goback, I then uninstalled and reinstalled Norton Anti virus and Norton Internet Security. Since then my computer seems to be running like of old, but I wouldn't wish this trouble on anybody, so hope it might help someone. I took my CD back to Costco where it had been purchased and told them I was more than a little unstatisfied with the product they sold me and advised them to not carry any more cr*p like it. They refunded my money.

As for this CD by Van Zant I got at a pawn shop for $3. I did not notice it was a Sony product (else I wouldnt have touched it with a ten foot pole) until after I loaded it to My Itunes. I saw the Columbia Records logo in large size but didnt see the SONY mark. I am suprised to report that it seems to have loaded up fine and nothing seems to acting up this time on my computer but the format of this CD seems different then the two versions listed on Amazon at this time. The disc I have is a single 2 sided disc one side is CD and the other side is dvd in "enhanced LCD Stereo" . The sticker and the lableing do not say this is Copy protected like the Foo Fighter Cd I had previous problems with so I hope I am Okay. I have heard that Sony has pulled and is reissuing the cr*p CDs and thought folks would appreciate hearing my experience. As for the music on this CD sounds good enough and when I play the DVD side through the computer the music seems to have a lot more depth to it. Good luck and watch what you load on your computer!

3 out of 5 stars Great Music, but it infects your computer!.......2006-01-23

All I wanted to do was transfer the music from the cd to my computer and ipod. Instead, it took me 10 minutes just to get done with installing software on my computer to actually be able to even access the music! This is riduculous! I legally and honestly purchased a cd and they won't let me play the music in the format I want without having to download software! If they all start doing this, it is like having a separate proprietory cd player for each cd you have! I don't think it is acceptable for them to be doing this, and I will refused to purchase anymore Van Zant/Sony albums. I am an honest person, I should not be punished for those that get there music illegally.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent cd, Don't buy it.......2005-12-31

This cd, like all new cd's from Sony, will infect your computer with a virus that cannot be removed. If you have already played this cd on your computer, the only way to eliminate the virus is to remove the hard drive and throw it away. Or better yet, mail it to Sony and tell them you want a new one. For more information search Sony xcp. This is a great cd, but unfortunately the Van Zant's record label is in the virus writing business.

5 out of 5 stars Stop freakin' out and buy the CD........2005-12-27

Ok this CD is really great, it's a mix of southern rock and country, and it's turned out as a hard-rockin country cd.But what else would you expect from the Van Zants? The whole Sony thing that went on, yeah that was wrong, but why blame these guys? They didnt do it. They just made the usic. They went to the studio and recorded it. That's all they did. They didnt put the software on the cd. SONY did! Blame Sony. Not a couple of hard workin' guys who had no clue! Here's what Johnny said and I totally agree.
"It's kind of unfair to us," Johnny Van Zant said of the whole affair, no doubt echoing the thoughts of other Sony BMG artists whose albums are now UNFAIRLY (ALBIET SOMETIMES HILARIOUSLY)TRASHED,TAGGED OR WHOLLY IGNORED IN FAVOR OF COPYRIGHT BICKERING AT Amazon.com.

Here's what Donnie said
"Look, what we do is write music, we make music," said Donnie Van Zant, who like most artists had no idea what sort of security features, if any, his label would place on the album. "I really don't even know what DRM means, to be honest with you.

They didn't know,ok? Don't boycott them. Sony has pulled the cd's there are new cd's without the XCP junk. Buy that. Don't blame it on them, blame it on Sony.I definitely reccomend this cd. It is great. It's the best thing that's hit country music since Johnny Cash.So sto acting like jerks and buy the new cd that doesn't have XCP.

5 out of 5 stars Great Southern Rock lives again.......2005-12-19

Call it rock-a-billy, southern rock or country rock, it is alive and well. This cd is well worth the wait and the price. It fits well in te tradition of the Van Zant family.

1 out of 5 stars Turns out Sony Gonna Tell Them What to Do..........2005-12-17

Much has been written about the awful software included on this CD. However, I'm surprised by the rush to let Van Zant off the hook. Many (8?) months have passed since the album was first released this way, and nearly two months have passed since a security researcher finally discovered what this CD did to people's computers. Everyone seems to assume that they are deeply upset about the mistreatment of their fans by the record label, but simply lack the courage to speak out against it.

I guess this could be true, but if it is I'll never be able to listen to their music in the same way. Please tell me they aren't really just cowards who put on an act to sell music! I think I'd rather believe they are fine with sticking it to us. Or better yet, maybe they will still turn around and speak out against what is happening here like many other bands in the same situation have already done. In the meantime, I for one am not impressed with Van Zant's handling of the issue.

1 out of 5 stars Security Issues with this CD persist after Sony's "patches".......2005-12-10

An update on the "rootkit" issue with this CD. Sony (and VZ, on their web site) have produced two or more "patches" that claim to address the security holes found in this CD. You should understand that security researchers have so far found that all of the patches so far released install ADDITIONAL security holes in your Windows computer. Details demonstrating the damaging effects of using this CD on a computer are available here:

http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/12/07/1343236&tid=233

It is irresponsible for Sony and VZ to continue producing this item, as it can leave your computer deeply vulnerable to being overrun by computer hackers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

5 out of 5 stars Definative.......2005-07-23

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

    3 out of 5 stars What a Shame.......2005-12-08

I bought this CD before Sony pulled it. I really like it alot and play it almost daily in my truck. I was planning to put it on my IPod, but I'm glad I had not done that yet after reading the reviews. I'm even more glad that it was not available for me to purchase as a Christmas gift for someone. I'd hate to know I gave anyone something that screwed up their computer. Thank goodness I haven't loaned it to my office mate who listens to his LEGALLY PURCHASED CDs on the computer as he works.

Meanwhile, it is absolutely disgusting that the bad seeds out there, who have actively stolen music, have made it necessary for a company to feel they have to take these steps to protect their investment ... even though the people it has hurt most are the legitimate customers.

3 out of 5 stars Unfortunate Situation For The Artists.......2005-11-28

It's too bad that the ill-advised strategy by Sony/BMG will forever cast a bad note over some good music making artists.

This album really has some good music from two long standing southern rockers turned country. Songs like Takin' Up Space and Help Somebody make this CD notable for the music, but Sony screws it up for this artist and others by creating a CD that rightfully no one will ever want to buy.

I see some lawsuits by artists whose careers and royalties will be affected by the stupid mistake from Sony

1 out of 5 stars WARNING ! DO NOT BUY THIS CD UNLESS YOU WANT TO BREAK YOUR CD ROM AND PAY FOR REAPAIRS !.......2005-11-26

Damn these copy protections, i could not get this cd to work in ANY of my 3 cd players, + my computer's CD-ROM drive was rendered inoperable by this CD !
