Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pickin' On Nashville, Part II?.......2006-10-31

For this, their second album, the Kentucky Headhunters put together the same type of diverse songs and styles that made their first album Pickin' On Nashville successful. While the singles released from this album did not achieve the same chart success as those from the first album, this album is no less entertaining to listen to.

The band made a name for itself with a hit rock interpretation of a Bill Monroe tune, and on this album there is no shortage of covers. In addition to covers of Monroe's "With Body and Soul," the band covers "The Ballad of Davy Crockett," "Love Bug Crawl" and "Spirit In The Sky," and does a hard rock version of Waylon's "Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line."

Except for the covers of "Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line" and "Spirit in the Sky" the albums strongest tracks are actually some of the Headhunter originals. Among the best are-

"Always Makin' Love," a breezy, positive country-pop tune,

"Diane," which features some awesome vocal interplay between the Phelps brothers,

and "Wishing Well," a hard rocker with a message that is probably my favorite song on the album. (However I could do without Ricky Lee's maniacal laughter at the end of the song.)

From the opening seconds of the album (Ricky Lee Phelps' over-the-top "i-yets's chitlin' time") the band declares that its love for camp, humor, and novelty is alive and well. Other examples of this include some of Ricky Lee's spoken interjections, the aforementioned "Davy Crockett," and the song "Big Mexican Dinner." Some listeners who may otherwise like the band may be turned off by this aspect of the album. In addition, many people will find "16 and Single" creepy in this day and age (and rightly so).

This album is the last Kentucky Headhunters to feature lead vocalist Ricky Lee Phelps. He and brother Doug Phelps would soon leave the band form the duo Brother Phelps (Doug would later return to the band as lead vocalist).

I tend to prefer this album, as a whole, over their debut (although I'm sure others will disagree...and I may too at times!). I find this album to be much more consistent than "Pickin'" from start-to-finish.

If you enjoyed Pickin' On Nashville, you are sure to enjoy this album as well.

5 out of 5 stars Y'all Caught.......2006-01-10

One listen to this album and I was hooked on the Hunters forever. If like me you think country could use some serious kickin now and again, there's no-one who does it better. Big noise, rockin' country with that southern charm and witt. Everyone should listen to this album to find out what country/rock really means. Highlights are "Chitlin Time" and just finding out what you can do with an ole classic like "Davy Crockett".

5 out of 5 stars More country with a touch of metal.......2004-03-12

This group was different - for innovation, they deserved to be major stars, but innovation rarely gets what it deserves in the music industry. Though rooted in traditional country, their music encompasses elements of rockabilly, western swing, and a lot of boogie-woogie. They look more like a metal band than a country group. The group were made up of Greg Martin (lead and slide guitar), Doug Phelps (bass and vocals), Ricky Lee Phelps (lead vocals, percussion and harmonica), Fred Young (drums and percussion) and Richard Young (rhythm guitar).

They wrote most of their own songs, the best of the eight on this, their second album, being It's chittling time, Wishing well, Big Mexican dinner and Kicking them blues around. They also recorded some fascinating covers, five of which are on this album - Ballad of Davy Crockett (the fifties children's classic variously associated with Bill Hayes, Fess Parker and Tennessee Ernie Ford), Only Daddy that'll walk the line (Waylon Jennings), With body and soul (Bill Monroe), Spirit in the sky (Norman Greenbaum) and Love bug crawl (Jimmy Edwards). Like the covers on their debut album, Picking on Nashville, they sound fresh and exciting.

In its general style, this is similar to their debut album, Picking on Nashville, though I slightly prefer this one.
