Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.

A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17

I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.

For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22

Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.

A Surefire Way To Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One!.......2003-04-12

The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

Find of a Lifetime!.......2006-12-08

In 27 years of total immersion in the music of Stephen Foster and the
pre-Civil War era I have never heard the equal of this record. Thirty one
songs and hymns, every one done exactly as written, with awesome musicianship,
beauty of voice, mastery of style, and the most perfect diction, that I have ever heard. And with every re-hearing, my respect and admiration for the artist's achievement goes higher.
No, he's not perfect. In Jeannie, Shanghai and Angelina Baker he lets
his considerable acting abilities shine forth, to fine effect. But in
general he follows the historical accident that Foster did not provide dynamics markings to guide performance until very nearly the end of his
career. Most Foster songs have no more markings than our church hymns.
So dynamics are mostly up to the performer and Eddy is notably subtle in his additions. I personally prefer a much more Romantic era "molto
espressivo" delivery, but principled differences like Eddy's deserve
respect, as having a charm of their own.
The greatest value of this recording, however, is that it gives us a
large number and range of songs sung in the kind of voice Stephen himself
had. A warm, lyric baritone voice, perfectly equalized from one vowel to
another, and up and down between high notes and low. Eddy sings them as if written for his voice because his voice is almost exactly Stephen's. And
when he sings, say, Jeannie, in the original key, we hear what Stephen
put in there for us to hear when he sang it.

Much as I like Nelson Eddy, without the label doing us the courtesy of listing the songs, I can't spend my hard-earned loot on the CD. I've heard a few of the songs he did with a Southern drawl, and they were jarring, to say the least, to hear that great voice used in that manner. i have to guess this CD is more of the same.

American music history.......2006-04-08

Rather than being a fan of Nelson Eddy I approached this cd from the point of view music history and found it to be the best one-cd collection of Stephen Foster's music available. Eddy does a good straight-forward job of singing the songs and I kept listening to the album while reading Ken Emerson's excellent book, "Doo-dah: Stephen Foster and the Rise of American Popular Culture." The cd and book are a great combination and introduction to a fascinating period of American culture.

Best Interpretation of the American Folk Song.......2005-11-19

Nelson Eddy does a fantastic job singing these classic tunes written by the great Americican songsmith, Stephen Foster. Most of these songs are in the public domain but Eddy does a characteristic interpretation of all of them complete with dialects of the era. Eddy puts his feeling into these songs and the listener will feel there is more than one voice on the album. A must buy for historical purposes, but if you are a fan of the baritone, get it now.

Some old favourites, and some unfamiliar, enjoyable voices and songs.......2007-03-11

This compilation has the usual songs that immediately bring the name of composer Victor Herbert to mind - Ah, sweet mystery of life, I'm falling in love with someone and Tramp, tramp, tramp - with such well known voices as those of Macdonald, Eddy and the famous tenors, Richard Crooks, Richard Tauber and Charles Kullmann.

Perhaps of greater interest to many listeners will be the relatively seldom heard artists, such as John McHugh, Florence Easton and Florence George. All three have very pleasant voices and aural personalities.

It is a somewhat mixed delight to hear Amelita Galli-Curci, John McCormack, Alma Gluck and Richard Werrenrath in recordings from the acoustic era. My personal favourite from that group is Galli-Cutci's charming version of A kiss in the dark.

Altogether, a well chosen mixture of the familiar and the out of the way, carefully and well re-recorded.

If you're into classical music and Fleetwood Mac then this album is for you! It's actually quite nice! I think this string quartet did a very nice job remaking Fleetwood Mac's masterpieces! It's quite interesting to listen to, especially if you're a big Fleetwood Mac fan! I would most definately recommend this album for big Fleetwood Mac and classical music fans!

Great Value.......2005-11-04

This 4 CD set covers approximately the same ground as the TENNESSEE PLOWBOY set issued by Bear Family - it is about 90% as good at about 25% of the cost. The reason for this discrepancy is that copyrights in Europe run only 50 years and are non-renewable so that neither Proper nor JSP (a very jazz oriented label) needs to pay royalties as long as they pick recordings at least 50 years old. Richard Weitze at Bear pays royalties whether he is required to or not

This set contains all of the Eddy Arnold hits of the 40s and early 50s with great sound. These are the original recordings from the days when Arnold was justly billed as the "Tennessee Plowboy", including the original versions of "I'll Hold You In My Heart" , "Any Time" and "Bouquet of Roses", three songs that spent a combined 49 weeks at #1. Legendary (non-pedal) steel guitar player "Little" Roy Wiggins (a/k/a Mr. Ting-A-Ling) is featured on many of these recordings.

Proper Records has done it again. I just recieved this set from Amazon and have listened to most of it . All the classic EA songs from the late 40's and early 50's are here - and the sound is great. These are the original recordings some are on hear twice with an additional virsion. Listening to songs like "Take me in your arms, Cuddle Buggin'Baby, Bouquet of Roses and Cattle Call sound better the second time around now that I am 50+ and can really apperciate this great artist. Yes they even included EA's early Christmas hits - C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S ,White Christmas,Will Santa come to Shanty Town and several others. This complete set of 90 hits is a real steal for a little more then 25 bucks. I can't believe that I am the first one to review this historical set on Amazon. You can get more expensive sets from other German recording companies and I have purchased many over the years but if your pockets aren't that deep this time of the year go for this set. Anyway you look at it this set deserves more then the 5 stars I just gave it as does Eddy Arnold who at 87 years old just recorded his 100 album with Cowboy Jack Clemmens for RCA!

The Baritone in all his varied glory..........2004-01-31

This CD is a perfect introduction to the songs Nelson Eddy loved best - beautiful melodies with beautiful lyrics which, though old, are just as meaningful and sweet now as when they were written. Some music simply never becomes dated.

It's hard to pick a favourite from this CD, because they are all wonderful for different reasons. There is "The Pilgrim's Song", into which Nelson infuses incredible feeling: somehow, he captures the exultant emotions of the pilgrim and passes them on to us who are listening. I also particularly like "Because", "Jeannie With the Light Brown Hair", and the "Russian Easter Hymn". I won't go into elaborate detail on each song and why it is beautiful. Words sometimes cannot explain what one must feel in one's soul. Nelson's voice is a true gift to humanity and I trust it will always be loved by all who love beautiful things.

I think this CD is a must have for anyone who loves good music, and would also recommend "Through the Years".

No Liner Notes.......2005-08-10

I had bought the Import Album a while back. It didn't have any liner notes with english translation, which I missed. When I read about the American release it led me to believe that it included the same liner notes that the LP had, which I use to have but unfortunately lost. It had the French verse with the English translation on the other side of it. If I had known that the liner notes with the dialogue were not included I would have not purchased it. I still gave this wonderful musical 5 stars because it deserves it. I wasn't going to fault it because the manufacturer was negligent in it's advertisement.
