Sid (Matthew Sweet, after his character's name in the Austin Powers band Ming Tea) and Susie (Susanna Hoffs, who joined him and Mike Myers in belting out "BBC" on the soundtrack) are in as fine voice as ever on Under the Covers, Vol. 1, a 15-song collection of tunes first made famous by the likes of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Mamas and the Papas, and the Who. And man, were they born to sing this stuff. Both the Bangles and Sweet discographies are derivative--in the best possible sense--of late-'60s pop-rock, and who didn't love the Merry-Go-Round, Grass Roots, Simon & Garfunkel, and Big Star covers Hoffs and company scattered among their originals? Recorded at Sweet's home studio in the Hollywood Hills, the album opens strong with "I See the Rain," a Marmalade song from 1967 that Jimi Hendrix called the year's best British single but was a hit only in the Netherlands. Maybe Sweet's stinging, ringing fretwork (he plays most of the non-percussion instruments on this disc) and Hoffs's throwback vocals will rectify that, nearly 40 years later. The two proceed to nail the Beatles' "And Your Bird Can Sing," one of the high points on Revolver, and score similarly with Fairport Convention's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" (Hoffs in full ballad mode), the Stone Poneys' "Different Drum," the Who's "The Kids Are Alright," Love's "Alone Again Or," and a pair of Neil Young numbers, "Cinnamon Girl" and "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere." Some of the selections do miss the mark--Hoffs's smoky-sweet backing vocals seem a little misplaced on Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," and "The Warmth of the Sun" was probably the wrong Beach Boys track for Sweet to attempt (Brian Wilson himself strains at those high notes nowadays). But by and large this is a delightful power-pop excursion. Van Dyke Parks's liner notes, keyboards, and string arrangements make it that much better, as do Sweet collaborator Ric Menck's drums, Ed Fotheringham's illustrations, and Henry Diltz's photographs (Hoffs looks as stunning today as she did when laying down All Over the Place). --Benjamin Lukoff

Album Description

What do alt-rock/power pop heroes like Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles) and Matthew Sweet do on their time off? They get together in Matthew's comfy home studio and record a stunning album of their favorite '60s pop hits and rarities, of course!

The two first worked together in conjunction with Mike Myers as members of the band Ming Tea, appearing in all three Austin Powers movies and soundtracks. Now they've struck out on their own with Under The Covers Vol. 1, a tribute to their favorite '60s acts, including The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young,The Who, and cult favorites like The Velvet Underground,The Zombies,The Left Banke, and Love. Leaving the songwriting to others lets Matthew and Susanna focus on singing, and the results are breathtaking. For extra authenticity, they even asked Van Dyke Parks (most famous for his work with the Beach Boys)to play keyboards and write string arrangements. It all adds up to a rock fan's dream come true.

4 out of 5 stars A breeze from the past........2007-06-23

No, not a blast, just a refreshing breeze. Was any new ground in pop music broken here? Nope. But it's fun and well done all the way through, and some of the great classics of the '60 get tweaked a bit, with great reverence, so that they are both old and new at the same time.

My one criticism is based on my purpose for buying it. I am in desperate need of music that my two young boys can enjoy and that won't drive me stark raving mad with boredom. I was hoping this would fit the bill, but the psychodelic first track "I See The Rain" is about the least accessible of the entire recording and my kids immediately decided they didn't like this CD.

Of course, I can always try again with the CD player on random play mode, but it got me thinking that with a little tweakage here and there this could have been a real breakthrough into the child's music market, since it seems to be a trend to record covers of classics and market them to kids.

Be that as it may, Susanna Hoff's voice is as distinctive as it was in the heyday of the Bangles, and since this CD says "Vol 1" on it I can only hope that there will be additional volumes to follow. I get it, even if my kids don't.

5 out of 5 stars A Boast for the Bygone.......2007-03-18

Apparently, Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs were going to bill themselves as "Sid & Susie." Glad the Shout label has their names on the release, because it made me look twice & eventually get this disc. There really aren't weak tracks on this CD. Cover versions can add to an original or well-known track, simply be a carbon copy or sometimes make you want to go back to the original disc. Two of these tracks have spent a great deal of time in my personal top ten rotation. I think my very favorite, which is a favorite because I kept playing it off the Left Banke record repeatedly back in its day and haven't heard it elsewhere, is "She May Call You Up Tonight." Ian Matthews did record a version of it, but the Left Banke's baroque pop was a unique sound. Sid & Susie give it a hard edge complete with soaring harmonies and jangling guitars, "I've been telling lines I never knew, all to keep that girl away from you." It's a luscious cover, not an obvious choice. Also a wonderful cover is "And Your Bird Can Sing" that pumps energy into what was a minor recording for the Beatles, but gleams with Sweet & Hoffs, "When your prize possessions start to wear you down, look in my direction, I'll be round." "Monday Monday" which will be one of the more familiar tracks is also given an excellent rendition with Hoffs proudly singing the "ba-da, ba-da's" like a boast for the bygone. The track has a stunning energy and is pure delight. I particularly like how the reverb flows into the break before the final chorus resumes. Fairport Convention & Judy Collins are closely identified with the Sandy Denny classic "Who Knows Where the Time Goes." Susan Cowsill recorded a cover of it on her recent "Just Believe It" set that went to the top of my favorite tracks of the year, as did the entire CD. Sid & Susie do a great version here, although I still go back to Collins' crystal Colorado voice and Susan's wonderful reading. I also enjoy their version of the Bee Gees' "Run to Me." The Bee Gees are kind of like the musical equivalent of Woody Allen -- it's hard not to sound like them, much as its hard for other actors not to sound like Woody Allen when doing his dialogue. Their rhythms and sound are so distinctive. This track is a contemplative gem that closes the disc. There are no weak tracks on this set, which makes me hope that a volume two does arrive! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful melodies and uplifting lyrics.......2007-02-15

The Good
A catchy guitar hook and a blending of Hoffs and Sweet's vocals command "I See the Rain" (The Marmalade). On "And Your Bird Can Sing" (The Beatles), Sweet and Hoffs trade harmonic melodies back and forth. Matthew also lays down a great surf-rock guitar solo. The duo expresses their rocking side on Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl." The tempo is slightly faster than the original, but it still has all of the edgy guitar fuzz. With just one note you will instantly recognize the mark of Brian Wilson on "The Warmth of the Sun" (The Beach Boys). This down-tempo number is lead mostly by Matthew's high-pitched vocals. Susana backs him up on the choruses.

Hoffs has such a sweet voice on The Stone Poneys classic "Different Drum." This is definitely one of the songs I think of when I think of that decade. I had no idea it was written by Mike Nesmith (Monkees). Sweet and Hoffs unleash their rocking side again on "The Kids are Alright" (The Who) and "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" (Neil Young & Crazy Horse). As the duo states in their liner notes, Who doesn't like The Mammas and the Papas? Songs like Monday, Monday were the epitome of the music scene in the sixties.

The Bad
Nothing notable

The Verdict
Not that I lived it, but what I've gathered in my lifetime; this album recreates the sounds of the sixties with beautiful melodies and uplifting lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Not a lot of new cd's worth buying these days. This one is!!!.......2007-01-29

And all covers- who would have thought? I had long forgotten about the Austin Powers connection but I had to listen to this after a highly critical/skeptical musician friend of mine told me how good it was. Then I met Susanna Hoffs at a Bangles show and was reminded how GREAT her voice is and how HOT she looks- she is like 47 and could put most 21 year old women to shame. Anyway I had better stop talking about that or that will be the whole review. Highlites? Your Bird Can Sing- man Susanna makes this her own- I would say it is the best Beatle cover EVER. Warmth of the Sun- I worship Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys and they did a great job with this one too. Cinnamon Girl- Incredible. The Kids Are Alright- again phenominal. The only one I could have lived without was "Different Drum". I don't buy the hype about Michael Nesmith being a musical genius. I think Hoffs sounds much better than Linda Rondstat but I found it impossible to forget Linda's whining while listening to it. One of the nice things about the album is that it is full of Susanna Hoffs. No jealous bandmates hogging the mic. And Matthew Sweet really compliments her. I have a lot more respect for the guy after hearing his voice and guitar work here.

4 out of 5 stars Great Taste, No Revelations.......2006-11-10

"Under the Covers" is a solid album covering '60s and '70s pop tunes. Sweet and Hoffs have the talent and production chops to put together convincing remakes of some well known songsand some exciting obscurities. Mostly it works well, although Sweet should never again attempt early-period Beach Boys (he just can't sing up there effectively). The album is more a celebration of Sweet and Hoff's great taste (and Sweet's guitar prowess) than an album with anything urgent or fresh to say. It's a pleasant listen and a good way of getting lots of great tunes in one place. But it doesn't really do anything all that innovative or moving.

Chan Marshall devised the Cat Power moniker in order to put a degree of separation between herself and the often-twisted individuals who inhabit her songs. Here, she takes another step back while also taking a step forward. As the album title indicates, these are covers of other people's songs. Yet she sings them with no less intensity than if they were her own. Mick Jagger may have snarled the definitive "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," but Marshall takes a different tack. She removes the chorus and returns it as elegant slow blues. The Velvet Underground's "I Found a Reason" becomes a near-wordless cry. She relies only on her sufficient guitar picking and likeably amateurish piano tinkling, creating an isolated web not unlike that of Neil Young at his most deserted. Most appropriately, she covers "Red Apples" by Smog, whom she resembles in approach. Obscure (traditional and early) Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, and Michael Hurley tunes complement the bruised but not buried surroundings. --Rob O'Connor

4 out of 5 stars Chan the (Wo)man Marshal makes another hit! .......2007-06-12

The Covers Record is an album that is typical Cat Power: subtle melodies underneath Chan Marshal's quiet, yet powerful vocals. I would venture to say that this is one of the most unique albums of covers that anyone will come across.

5 out of 5 stars melancholy.......2007-01-12

I love this album. Her renditions of these classics are so unique to her style and melancholic. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Lover her or hate her.......2007-01-12

Chan seems to have the type of voice you love or hate; kind of like Bjork or JoAnna Newsom.

Put me in the love camp.

I'm listening to Covers right now, and let me say that the song "Naked If I Want to Be" is simply jaw-droppingly awesome. How can someone express such true, naked (no pun intended) emotion?

Truly incredible.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT VOICE!.......2006-11-04

She has an excellent voice. Not typical. She does a great job of covering all of the songs!

3 out of 5 stars She can't play, but she can sure sing.......2006-09-03

If you've been listening to the Cat Power album, The Greatest, you'll know that Chan Marshall makes a superb blues singer. The Covers Record, a likable collection of cover songs recorded in the late 1990s, serves as a nice introduction to Marshall's blues/folk singing style. There is no backup band on this stripped down album, only Marshall's voice and one other instrument per song. Spare, but it gets the job done.

Some reviewers have fawned over her version of the Stones classic "Satisfaction." I'm okay with that, but I'm considerably more enchanted by "Salty Dog," the country blues standard made famous by Mississippi John Hurt. Marshall does a wonderful version of it, easily on par with any folk or blues singer you can think of. One reason this song stands out for me is that she sticks to her strength (bluesy singing) and turns the guitar duties over to an actual professional, Matt Sweeney. He does nice job playing fingerstyle guitar John Hurt fashion. It's so easy to like this song. It's simple, clean, and sounds really great.

If only she had followed this approach for every song on the album! This could have easily been a five star album... not even just five stars, but a THOUSAND stars! But instead, Marshall prefers schlubing her way through the piano and guitar parts rather than have one of her talented friends provide a proper accompaniment. The Covers Record has a DIY quality to it as a result. Although I do like The Covers Record--it's one of her best albums--I keep thinking of how great it might have been if only she focused exclusively on singing.

Fortunately for us, Marshall's great voice saves the album. The CD is quite listenable even in spite of some of her bumbling and plodding accompaniments. I approve of the stripped down approach--no drum machines, no distorted guitars, no overdubbed harmonies. Truly, it would have been a formula for absolute perfection, if only!

Ah well... what are Cat Power fans if not an exasperated bunch? Look at any forum about her. It's one post after the next making excuses for her screwups, or making suggestions for improvement: "Chan would be so good if only she didn't cry and stop playing, or if only Chan would tune her guitar, or if only Chan would complete the song without messing up, or if only Chan would get a good producer who could help her." Somehow these problems never seem to arise with her peers like Ani Difranco, Regina Spektor, PJ Harvey, etc... but Cat Power fans have to learn to be tolerant. Every song can't be a winner. And in her case, it's more like every tenth song might be a winner, but only if the moon is right, she happens to be in a good mood, isn't drunk, nobody says anything mean to her, and she decides to let someone else play guitar for a change. Then and only then you may just get to hear something really magical come out of her.

In any event, The Covers Record has some remarkable moments and if you can accept its DIY limitations, it's a good listen.

A rather mediocre and often puzzling outing for the multitalented Mr. Yoakam. While the idea of Under the Covers--Dwight trying his hand at songs by the likes of the Beatles, Them, the Clash, Roy Orbison, Ray Davies, and the Rolling Stones--sounds good on paper, it's an uneven ride that lacks focus. The Clash's "Train in Vain" works as a hillbilly hayride (with Ralph Stanley on banjo), but Ray Davis' "Tired of Waiting for You" goes nowhere, and the Johnny Horton chestnut "North to Alaska" seems misplaced. Not an essential Yoakam release, but not bad as a curiosity. --S. Duda

      1 out of 5 stars Unlistenable.......2006-04-29

I am not a huge Dwight Yoakam fan but I have several of his CD's and enjoy his music and his voice. I ordered this CD when I saw that he covered a few tunes by other artists that I enjoy (Beatles, Rolling Stones etc). I'm guessing that he was in a studio one day and someone suggested he take these familiar tunes and arrange them so no one could possibly recognize or enjoy them. Maybe it was a big joke. Who knows? I wish I could go back in time to that moment before I clicked on "Proceed To Checkout". I would change everything that happened at the next moment. This CD is currently being utilized under the short leg of my pool table. Hey, this is just my opinion. I still listen to my other Yoakam CD's. You want a great "listenable" CD? Buy Steve Earle's "The Mountain" with The Del McCoury Band.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Happy.......2005-09-15

This CD was a gift for someone and we are both very happy with the entire transaction. Very VERY quick shipping-I think it was just 2 days! Great job!

4 out of 5 stars Not sure what to think.......2005-09-05

Personally, I think Dwight can do no wrong.....but this album just doesn't seem quite right! I'm not even sure what to make of his song selection, but I think this album could have been a helluva lot better if he dumped half the tracks and replace them with some of his own material (maybe even some songs he scrapped long ago?). With that said, there are some real beauties remaining here, and Johnny Horton's "North to Alaska" is one. I'd love to hear Dwight cover Horton's "Whispering Pines" or "All for the Love of a Girl".....I know he'd make them shine again. "Playboy" is the finest track on the album; solid country and love those fiddles. I pretty much despise all "70's pop-country, but I'll give Dwight credit for improving Glen Campbell's "Wichita Lineman", and I actually liked "Good Time Charlie". A pretty mellow release by Dwight, and maybe that's the problem.

3 out of 5 stars Solid Effort, But Not His Best.......2003-07-10

First of all, let me say that this is a good album, Dwight deserves every bit of the three stars I gave this disc. It showcases Dwight's ability to twist and meld different styles of music to create a solid, distinctive sound. It doesn't, however, give us any original material(after all, it IS a COVER album). I appreciate Dwight's effort, and I understand that he has cranked out some pretty amazing material and deserved a little rest, but I can't give a 4-5 star rating on an album of covered material for the simple fact that it is a cover album. I should say that this is one of the better cover albums I have listened to.
Dwight does just fine on all of the songs on this album, especially "Here Comes The Night," "Claudette" and "Wichita Lineman."
This is a good album, but if you're just starting to listen to Yoakam, buy another one of his albums to get an idea of just how brilliant he is. I recommend "If There Was A Way," a pivotal album in his career, or any of his greatest hits selections.

5 out of 5 stars Dwight demonstrates his roots.......2003-03-26

Dwight has demonstrated on many albums that he is an excellent songwriter, but he has also recorded his share of covers down the years. This album is made up entirely of covers, but they are all extremely well done, suitably updated for today's listeners.

Dwight mixes country classics like Wichita lineman (Glen Campbell), T for Texas (Jimmie Rodgers) and North to Alaska (Johnny Horton) with sixties pop classics like Things we said today (Beatles), The last time (Rolling stones), Tired of waiting for you (Kinks) and Here comes the night (Them).

Baby don't go was an early Sonny and Cher hit, which Dwight sings as a duet with Sheryl Crow. Claudette was written in the fifties by Roy Orbison but is generally associated with the Everly brothers. Perhaps the most surprising selection is Train in vain, a cover of a song by punk rockers The Clash. Despite its origin, it sits comfortably among the other tracks here.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Not Great.......2006-04-13

A passable collection of covers; some are excellent, a few totally mutilate the originals, and the remainder are mediocre imitations of Elliott.

To be honest, I've heard work that's as good or better from unsigned artists. If your interested, you can find Elliott covers aplenty here

5 out of 5 stars funky and beautiful tribute to the late and dear Elliott.......2006-03-28

Wonderful compilation that makes me feel closer to Eliott Smith's angst, pain and joy.

      5 out of 5 stars i still miss Elliott..........2006-03-01

this cd makes me miss Elliott - we lost him too soon. I like this cd very much but it is still sad to know that he is gone. this seems to be a heartfelt tribute and I don't understand how anyone could fault it. it makes me question their motivation to fault a sincere tribute from a small indie label when this tribute benefits the Elliott Smith foundation.

1 out of 5 stars Well, they had good intentions.......2006-02-27

Maybe if they had chosen bands with more character that would cover an Elliott Smith song with a little flavor this cd would have been better. I listened to It 3 times all the way through just to make sure I wasnt missing something, and I wanst. Nothing worth hearing here. at least they had good intentions.

4 out of 5 stars From Portland with love.......2006-02-16

Tribute albums tend to fail their intended audience time and again, mainly because the audience they target are purist fans of the original work. More often than not, these fans view any reworking of the material as a form of sacrilege. Sadly, this is already the case for what is in reality, an outstanding tribute to Elliott Smith, "To:Elliott/From:Portland." Reading the message boards on various Smith fan sites, it doesn't take long to see that this release is loathed by his fan base. The crux of their collective wrath seems to be aimed at the non-sparse production, the reverse of which was a Smith trademark. Unfortunately, they are missing the real worth of this CD - that he was a remarkable songwriter, and given that fact, even relatively unknown artists (all of the bands on this disc are from his hometown of Portland) have a hard time sounding bad when given such a great song to work with. The CD kicks off with the best known band of the bunch, The Decemberists, and their cover of Clementine, and it's performed
almost as sparse as Elliott's original - acoustic guitar, harmonica, and the sound of a crackling fire in the background. The fire is a great effect - and reminds me how few of today's songs would actually sound so good at night in the woods with the smell of burning brush and branch permeating the air. From there, the production gets more lavish as each of the artists takes on the task of honoring his work. In spite of this, these artists do a fantastic job with Smith's material - and for people who were not a part of the near lunatic fanaticism that made up Smith's fan base while he was alive, I think they will be drawn even closer to his original work. Much like one of Elliott's biggest inspirations, The Beatles, a great song still sounds like a great song - even if performed by a guy at the corner pub. Unless you live in Portland, you won't know many (if any) of these artists, with the exception of the Decemberists and Eric Matthews - but please don't let that stop you from discovering this fine CD.
You'll thank yourself later for owning it.

5 out of 5 stars the junkies can do no wrong.......2006-08-26

The five songs on this very limited release EP are all covers of some of the musicians that have influenced the great Cowboy Junkies. It starts off with a version of Springsteen's "Thunder Road." I first heard the Junkies play this live in concert and once I heard the recorded version, I quickly realized it was my favorite cover version of any song ever. They took Springsteen's song of youth and unfulfilled hopes and really brought out the melancholy side of the lyrics. Sure, they skipped a verse, but it is a fantastic rendition. Second comes a Cure song that I'd never heard before, mostly because I'm not a fan of the Cure. And I'm not really a fan of this song, even when done by the Coyboy Junkies. Third on the EP is a great cover of "Lungs," written by Townes Van Zandt. Townes covers are found on several of the Junkies albums and this one is as good as all of them, except the the amazing "To Live Is To Fly" found on "Black Eyed Man." The EP follows with "Darkness, Darkness," first done by the Youngbloods. I've never heard the original here, either, but I can say that the Junkies version is definitely dark. Finally, the Junkies wrap it up with a cover of Neil Young's "Helpless." Again, Young is one of the favorites of the Junkies and I've heard them perform at least five different songs of his live. They do a great job with this version. If you can somehow get your hands on this EP, you are sure to love it, especially if you are a Cowboy Junkies fan, or a fan of Canadian music, or music in general.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent "bonus disc"........2005-11-21

This 5-track disc initially came with the "One Soul Now" album as a bonus, and you may still be able to find it around, who knows. Obviously the Springsteen cover is great. "Seventeen Seconds" is a Cure song, and they do it extremely well. Lungs is ok. "Darkness, Darkness" is another fine cover, and I've heard it done by Robert Plant also. Then of course the Cowboy Junkies covering Neil Young is like shoes covering socks. Perfect.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent covers.......2005-09-24

      Track listing:
      1. Thunder Road (Springsteen)
      2. Seventeen Seconds (Gallup, Simon, etc.)
      3. Lungs (Van Zandt)
      4. Darkness, Darkness (Jesse Colin Young)
      5. Helpless (Neil Young)

Worth getting for the Springsteen alone. Amazon doesn't have it for sale, but I doubt if it's out-of-print.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorite tributes.......2005-11-10

Maybe the original is always the best. Maybe no one should ever cover a song. Maybe we shouldn't wear our influences on our sleeve. Maybe this music thing is just too exclusive and elite and we should stop listening.

...or, maybe all that provincial, possessive, narrow B.S. should be ignored, and we should enjoy great CDs whatever form they take. Revolutionary notion?

Granted, there are a few skippers on here -- but there's a high percentage of superb readings of DK songs in a wide stylistic range, and the sound quality is excellent.

Not to be missed are the Didjits, Alice Donut, Steel Pole Bath Tub, and Kramer's psuedo-duet with Sebastian the Crab (from the Little Mermaid)...so wierd!

I prefer the mix of "California Uber Alles" on this CD to the one on the Disposable Heroes album, if you are a fan of them. It sounds a little more immediate.

      4 out of 5 stars crazy CD.......2005-02-16

If your looking for a new sound to old DK favorites look no further. This CD has artits that capture the mood and the feeling of the DKs but do it in there own way. From country to rap to loungue versions of some of the best punk songs ever made. A great buy, and probably the best 99 cents i ever spent

      1 out of 5 stars Tribute albums?.......2002-10-25

The problem with tribute albums; you only buy them only if you liked the original, and this is not the original.
The only remakes I like of DK songs; Disposeable Heros 'California Uber Alles', and Mojo Nixon's 'Winnebago Warrior', which suck on this album.
I mean buy the original, and if you have to buy a remake, buy the original remakes, Hipocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury and Gadzooks: The Homemade Bootleg.

4 out of 5 stars Aging very well........2000-06-08

I bought this album on vinyl when it was released. I sat in my room with headphones on, listening over and over again. It was great. I taped it and listened in my car. My friends asked, "what the hell IS this?". I kept listening. It ruled.

Time passed, I lost the tape, sold my turntable. Last month I bought the CD, wondering if it would still sound as good as it did when I was younger.

It mostly did. The highlights are definately Moon Over Marin, California Ueber Alles (and if you like it too, check out Spearhead, Mike Franti's current group), and the NOMEANSNO track (a capella! wow!). The other tracks often benefit from a little more volume, and some are too close to the original DK interpretation to be very fresh, but altogether a fine tribute album, and worth your time and money if you like Dead Kennedy's music.

      5 out of 5 stars a dead kennedy's no brainer.......1999-10-20

this was Alternative tentacles 100th release, they wanted to make it count. if you like DK, this is a must have. The covers are well done and too much fun. this album gives you a complete new feeling for"Moon over Marin" if you are old school and remember the "old days" of punk, this is a definite keeper

4 out of 5 stars Unique and enjoyable recording.......2006-08-16

This is one of my favorite Rasputina albums. The recording quality is top notch and it's not just the band playing the same songs that you hear on the studio albums. They've got some very amusing exchanges with the crowd and intro to most of the songs.

I cannot stress enough that the live editions of these songs are different than the ones on the studio albums. "Hunter's Kiss" and "If Your Kisses Can't Hold", in my opinion, are much better in the live renditions than the studio versions from other albums.

All in all, I am quite pleased with this purchase as it is a very nice complement to the rest of the Rasputina catalog.

4 out of 5 stars Hey! This has been done before!.......2005-12-31

Rasputina is great and unique; being a cellist myself they really mean a lot to me. I am also a music lover and really like 'gothic' stuff(gothic cello music ~perfect~)... but I have been getting into psychedelic/acid folk rock too...Well what does that have to do with anything? I just listened to 'Blind Man' by Curved Air from their album Air Conditioning and I really thought it was Rasputina! The exact same vocal style, strings, and very similar melodies! I can't believe this was done 35 years ago! ... Rasputina kinda had problems in their career trying to find a place to 'fit in' and decided to go with the gothy thing touring with Marilyn Manson. Now their fans are also listening to music like Marilyn Manson, Switchblade Symphony and other Cleopatra Records stuff(based on Amazon.com similar searches)...It just makes me wonder if they toured under a more relevant folk-rock outfit(maybe with Coldplay or Lucinda Williams instead of Manson) would they still have fans that listen to gothic music? Heck No! Would they be more popular? Yes!...So back to what I was gonna say. If you find that Rasputina's music really stands out and you want something more similar in sound do a search for acid/psychedelic folk rock bands of the 60's 70's...stuff like Comus and Curved Air. Similarities will blow you away.

1 out of 5 stars Worst live album I've ever heard.......2005-11-16

Sorry I don't mean to belittle their work but it really is the worst live album by a band I have ever heard.

      5 out of 5 stars I love Rasputina!!!!.......2005-10-20

Love the remakes of Barracuda and Been a Long Time. No one believes me when I say that it is a Cello instead of guitars.
Love Wicked Dickie and When I was a Young Girl as well. Buy it. This CD is better, in my opion, than the studio CD's.

5 out of 5 stars An old man who had a cow...........2005-10-18

I love this CD, plain and simple. I had only ever heard a few songs off of 'Thanks for the Ether' and was impressed but not immensely. With this CD, I am impressed...immensely.
First off, it sounds better than any live CD I have ever heard. I usually avoid live recordings like the plague but this one brings me new hope for live stuff.
Second, and most importantly, the music is inspired and practically brilliant (Not Hyperbole). Every song stands on its own and is shockingly eclectic in its own right. From their "Cow Punk" to their "Classical" to songs like "The Mayor" (which is gorgeous, for lack of better word).
If you have heard any of Rasputina's music and even kinda liked it I recommend this CD. If you listen to it and don't find yourself singing "Wicked Dickie" throughout the day, I will give you a nice shiney quarter.
