The Man in Black always knows. At least he always sounds like he does. These days he's been Rick Rubinized, covering Soundgarden and Beck and toying with severe production techniques and Cash is all the stronger for it. But this is a late '80s collection of songs Cash made famous many years ago in a context far different from his original intentions. (Horns and synthesizers are hardly the tools of the country music trade). These re-recordings prove he could still breathe life into songs that have followed him his whole career ("Long Black Veil," "Ring of Fire," "Folsom Prison Blues"). --Rob O'Connor

This is one of the best I've heard if you like country & duets... Absolutely wonderful!

4 out of 5 stars Missing Some Major Duets!! .......2005-07-26

These tracks are all excellent but frankly several major country duets are not here!! Where on earth are Kenny Rogers and Dottie West?? Instead we get Rogers with Sheena Easton and the Rogers/Easton combo makes it almost entirely a pop recording and it should not be on this package. Buck Owens & Rose Maddox have a track but where is Buck with his far more famous duet partner Susan Raye? The Merle Haggard - Janie Fricke track should not have been included since she really only just sings harmony on the record. Why aren't Jimmy Wakely & Margaret Whiting who started the male/female star duet craze in 1949 with Slipping Around here or Kitty Wells & Red Foley, the first superstar duet? And where are Ferlin Husky & Jean Shepard, Jack Greene & Jeannie Seely, David Houston & Barbara Mandrell, Bobby Bare & Skeeter Davis, Roy Drusky & Priscilla Mitchell, Don Gibson & Dottie West, Johnny Duncan & Janie Fricke, to name just a few of the famous country duos of yore. Instead we have too many tracks with the same artists here. It's a very good package but it should have been a great and classic one.

5 out of 5 stars A decent introduction to Johnny Cash.......2005-11-12

I was in Tower today (not a record shop I visit very often I promise) and I was looking for a Johnny Cash compilation to buy. I've had a casual interest in his music over the past several years and with the upcoming movie out soon I thought I would finally break down and purchase a "hits" collection to see if I could really get into him. Well I almost walked out with Legend (a 21 song cd spanning his entire career) when I looked below and found this gem. Its a small box set containing two cds of some of his early and best work: Cry, Cry, Cry, Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk The Line, Ring Of Fire, and some really amazing tracks that I've never heard of. The cd only cost 2 dollars more and contained 15 more songs than the Legends cd. A great buy!!! By the way, this an import and the label is not Solid Gold its Union Square Music.
I also got the Folsom Prison cd which is amazing as well.
So today I became a Johnny Cash fan and I have these cds to thank for it.

2 out of 5 stars Why re-make a song when the original is so good?.......2006-08-03

I generally do not like re-makes, especially by the same artist and particularly when nothing new is brought to the song. If one is going to re-make a song, at least attempt a different arrangement with different instruments, tempo, etc. Don't make it identical to the first recording; this is tantamount to trying to remind people you are still alive, which is rather sad. This CD reveals how desperate Cash was to revive a once hot career, and the results are unmemorable to say the least. If you are a casual Cash fan, steer clear of this one. I would recommend it for completists only.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing more original THAN the original recordings... .......2004-12-07

These re-recordings of "classic" Cash tunes show WHY the 1950s and early '60s originals will always be the versions that will forever be remembered by serious music fans in future decades. In the original Sun and Columbia versions there was a special something that just made you want to really listen...For CLASSIC CASH there is no substitute for the recordings Johnny Cash made with the REAL Tennessee Two/Three: Marshall Grant on bass, the legendary Luther Perkins on guitar, and later WS Holland on drums. The band included on this album (although WS Holland and longtime guitarist Bob Wootton are present) sounds more like some "cover band" Cash may have picked up on the way to the recording studio. Cash re-recorded some of the songs on this album in 1963 and '64 for the I WALK THE LINE LP on Columbia with much better results! Hardly worth listening to more than once.

5 out of 5 stars The Purists are Purely Annoying.......2003-06-27

I own lots and lots of Johnny Cash, but I always grab this one when I'm heading out the door and hanker for some Classic Cash. No one wants to jam to the dunka dunka rhythms of the sun recordings when theyre barreling down the road, come on! This rawks, good stuff. This is that bridge for the modern ear to some of the best cash songs ever written. If that's wrong, then I don't ever want to be right.

      4 out of 5 stars A Johnny Cash Update.......2002-10-16

Johnny is among my favorite musicians. With his voice and careful delivery of lyrics with a heavily played guitar, I can listen to just about anything he'll sing.

Now, to be noted, some of these songs are remakes. That's not a curse, until you are an originals purist. You know that. Give a listen to a few samples and see how they pan out. They work for me. I hope you'll like them too.

This isn't the last word on Johnny. It is a good CD to play in your truck on the way to town, or to [turn] up in the rec room while playing a bit of pool. "Boy Named Sue" and other aren't on this one. None of his gospel stuff either, but those can be found on other albums.

I fully recommend "Classic Cash" by Johnny Cash. Buy it, listen to it, enjoy it, and remember, don't bring your guns to town.

      Anthony Trendl

      5 out of 5 stars I AGREE.......2002-07-20

I couldn't agree more with Tim from New York. I myself have many albums of this great performer and he does an excellent job on this one. If you have ever seen him live you would appreciate this album a lot more. Definitely a five star album.

From 1948 until the 1960s, Dallas's Big "D" Jamboree stage and radio show was the region's Grand Ole Opry, offering local favorites and major stars every Saturday. Unlike the conservative Opry, the Jamboree's music reflected Texas's more freewheeling sound. Drums and saxophones were common and, from the mid-'50s on, so was rockabilly. Beyond visiting stars (Cowboy Copas, Ferlin Husky, and a youthful Johnny Cash) the show was sustained by house acts like the explosive, sensual Charline Arthur, whose hard-edged vocals anticipated Patsy Cline's. The Jamboree house band's vibrancy can be heard in the hot bass-slapping behind Copas and Hank Locklin that makes their traditional country tunes rock. Hearing Carl Perkins, Warren Smith, Sid King, Gene Vincent, Jerry Reed, and Ronnie Dawson in their youthful rockabilly prime proves yet again that this seminal music had twice the immediacy and primal impact live. Captured in near-flawless monaural, these extraordinary, well-packaged performances (one disc each devoted to country and rockabilly), complete with announcements, introductions, and the odd commercial, summarize a golden era too rarely preserved for posterity. --Rich Kienzle

      Album Description

This historic double-CD release culminates over 3 years of research on the legendary barn dance that was Dallas version of the Grand Ol Opry. Countless country and rock & roll stars of the 50s got their first taste of performing in front of large audiences on nationally syndicated radio at the Big D, and many of those great live performances are made available here for the first time. Hear Sun Records-era Johnny Cash performing I Walk The Line to an adoring Dallas audience, or marvel at a sizzlin version of Blue Suede Shoes performed by the Carl Perkins band, both captured here in all their early glory. And country fans are sure to enjoy the vintage honky-tonk performances of Cowboy Copas, Ferlin Husky, Hank Locklin and Jimmie Heap, as well as female artists Charlene Arthur, Wanda Jackson and Ramona Reed.

All in all, this is a must-have time capsule of mid-20th century American roots music thats entirely unique, and apt to start a new trend in the release of other barn dance transcriptions from the period.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just For Music Historians.......2000-05-03

It's almost hard to believe all the acts that have fallen between the cracks in Country and Rock history. This stunning collection is a reminder that indeed, Rock and Roll Never Forgets. Besides stellar live cuts from Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Gene Vincent are a host of others giving their all on the Southwest version of the Grand Ole Opry and the Louisiana Hayride. Divided in to 2 Discs- Hillbilly and Rockabillies you'll find yourself wondering what happened to names like Charlene Arthur, Sherry Davis, Tommy Mitchell and The Belew Twins. Thankfully the excellent liner notes have info on the whereabouts of these and others. For those of you wondering if the history of Rock has already been written, its collections like these that remind us that there's still a lot to be uncovered.

      5 out of 5 stars A Big 'T' for Talent at Big 'D' Jamboree.......2000-03-28

"The Big 'D' Jamboree--Live, Volumes 1 & 2," a two-disc collection featuring live recordings by Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins, is a fascinating musical snapshot of the intersection between country music and rock 'n' roll in the 1950s.      Nashville's Grand Ole Opry was the major leagues of country music, but its organizers--like most adults in the '50s--frowned on the upstart rock 'n' roll.      But there was another layer of country music showcases around the nation, one that was more tolerant of young rock performers because the owners saw that the music could lure new fans. Among these minor league operations: the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport, La.; Town Hall Party in Compton; and the Big "D" Jamboree in Dallas.      Like the Opry itself, several of these "barn dances" were broadcast over radio and/or television, thus offering invaluable experience and exposure for such future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members as Elvis Presley, Cash, Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis.      Given rock's rebellious image, it's interesting to see how folksy and polite some of these rockers sound on the Big "D" Jamboree appearances. The shrieks in the background when Perkins sings "Blue Suede Shoes" indicate that lots of young rock fans were on hand, but the tone of the show is very traditional and adult.      Introducing "I Walk the Line," for instance, Cash speaks to the crowd with the same kind of patter you'd expect from a country veteran such as Roy Acuff or Ernest Tubb.      "Thank you very much, friends," Cash says during a show that was probably recorded in 1956. "It's a real pleasure to be here with you all tonight at the Big 'D.' It's always one of our biggest thrills to come to Dallas to play for all the wonderful folks down here . . . and here's our latest on Sun [Records]. We hope you folks will enjoy hearing [it] maybe one more time."      There's a similar exchange when Perkins introduces his signature "Blue Suede Shoes" by calling it a song about "a pair of slippers."      Disc 1--titled "Hillbillies"--features such name acts as Ferlin Husky, Hank Locklin, Cowboy Copas and Leon Payne, as well as such relative unknowns as Charline Arthur, who is described in the liner notes as "a talented country singer, tough and energetic, who not only responded to rockabilly, but in some ways anticipated it." Her two tracks--including one written by Mae Axton, who also co-wrote "Heartbreak Hotel"--are intriguing enough to make a rockabilly enthusiast seek out the compilation of her music on the Bear Family label.      Disc 2--titled "Rockabillies"--offers a variety of cult and hit artists, including Gene Vincent, Warren Smith, Johnny Carroll and Jerry Reed.      Presley isn't featured on the album, which was released by Dragon Street Records, but his presence was so dominant in rockabilly in the middle to late '50s, when these recordings were made, that it's only fitting that three artists perform songs associated with him.      It's also symbolic of the somewhat outcast nature of country music and rock at the time that the Big "D" Jamboree was held at the Sportatorium, a building mostly devoted to pro wrestling. In fact, the musicians performed on the same mat that the wrestlersused.      In the liner notes, album producer David Dennard describes how Ed McLemore, who ran the wrestling programs at the Sportatorium, saw the potential of country music in the area and became what Dennard describes as a mini-version of Presley's manager, Col. Tom Parker. McLemore apparently became an important regional music force, "a mini-empire of management, publishing, booking, road shows and artist publicity concerns under his direction."      But the rock 'n' roll sounds that initially helped draw new fans eventually ended up taking audiences away. "I think rock and roll just done us in," Johnny Hicks, a DJ who was associated with the show, recalls in the album booklet. "After all, the generations were changing, the music tastes were changing. It was just one of those things that happened."      While the Big "D" Jamboree lasted, however, it served as an important cultural bridge between country and rock. The music and recording quality are uneven on the two discs, but the spirit of the shows still comes through.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Performances On Big "D" Jamboree.......2000-02-12

I was really impressed when I first listened to this cd. Artists you never dreamed of you would ever hear perform live are present on this cd. Great live acts from the fifties by Carl Perkins and other greats. I was especially impressed by the Belew Twins live stuff. Great sound, great quality. If you love rockabilly like I do, go for it!

Johnny Cash has recorded several Christmas albums that are served up in his traditional country style. For Classic Christmas, Cash opted to record with the full accompaniment of a studio orchestra and to stay with conventional Christmas carols. Though he includes the upbeat "Joy to the World," he naturally gravitates towards the slower, dramatic carols ("Silent Night," "It Came upon a Midnight Clear") and, with his booming voice, cuts through the tinsel. Despite the elaborate arrangements, Cash still comes across as humble and sincere. These songs are as much a part of his background as the country music heritage he so often celebrates. If anything, at 10 tracks in 32 minutes, it's a shame there isn't more where this came from. --Rob O'Connor

3 out of 5 stars Not a Johnny Cash sound.......2002-12-03

I picked this holiday album up thinking I'd get a Christmas album with a Johnny Cash sound. If you think you'd appreciate Cash's definitive voice backed with lush orchestral accompynanment, then this release will be very satisfying. Released in 1980, Christmas Classic covers the standard favorites and an off the wall offering, Little Gray Donkey. Cash stumbles at times through this narrative offering. My favorite cut on the album is It Came Upon The Midnight Clear. If you want to pick up a good holiday record, try Jerry Jeff Walker's Christmas release.
