Wild, Free & Reckless [ENHANCED CD]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The casual listener might hear Wild, Free & Reckless and think that The Complete Hank Williams wasn't complete after all. Then again, when one wears his influences as proudly as Hancock, originality is not necessarily a virtue. Hancock's third album, like its predecessors, was recorded the old-fashioned way--live in the studio--and while the rough-and-ready, distinctly retro guitar-and-steel-guitar sound wouldn't flatter some performers, it's a natural for "Wayne the Train," his nasal twang, and his crack backing band. Thanks to their customarily relentless tour schedule, they are once again razor-sharp. --Anders Smith-Lindall

In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah Chin

4 out of 5 stars Irish at it's best........2007-05-07

This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.

5 out of 5 stars Irish Magic.......2006-08-21

This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices, the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Just got your Kleenex.......2005-12-25

I suggest a box of Kleenex for each person in the room when you play this CD or VHS recording. Mom won't let me play it anymore because she...well, you know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-12

When it's cold and frightful here, I play The BOYZ!

So wonderful. So much fun.

Up here in backwash Maine, there ain't much, believe me. But these guys are great. Sincere, care about what they're doing, true artists.

Ah, to go to Ireland again. Well, not unless the price of natural gas recedes!

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Irish Tenors is just that!.......2005-01-22

This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!

Well worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for "Flat Land Boogie".......2006-12-18

Rockabilly seems to be so popular now but Wayne is one of them that sounds less like he is wearing a costume, musically, and more like he believes in what he's doing.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD.......2000-12-16

I love this CD and I can't wait for Wayne to release another. I usually leave this one in the player most of the time. It's good toe-tappin music on a long highway trip.

5 out of 5 stars Wayne Hancock is a genius!.......2000-05-10

There is a quality to Wayne Hancock's music that is difficult to describe. The restless feel of the southwest, the precision of the music, making it hard to believe that it was recorded live in studio; yet understanding that it was the only way it could sound so perfect. Someday Hancock will be recognized as the genius he is. Wild, Free & Reckless is his best effort, but his first and second were also in a class by themselves. You've got to here Wayne Hancock.

2 out of 5 stars ho hum.......1999-09-28

a rather lackluster effort from this NEO hillbilly singer! His past work was better this is tired and uninspired rehashed stuff! I'd rather listen to Hank Williams senior or Webb Pierce!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Song Oriented Album.......2005-04-25

Graham Bonnet performs stellar vocals, as always, on his second Forcefield album. Several remakes of classic rock and pop tunes are here. Guitar players are more than competent including several solos by Mario Parga, that can compete with any other great Bonnet guitarist. This is an excellent song oriented album and trying to find a rare copy is necessary for real GB fans.

3 out of 5 stars Solid debut album.......2007-05-19

1986's Young, Wild and Free was the debut album from Canadian hard rockers Brighton Rock. Unlike some of the high quality melodic rock bands active in Canada at the time (April Wine, Honeymoon Suite, and Triumph for example), Brighton Rock played fairly straightforward Hollywood-style hair metal. Gerry McPhee's abrasive vocal style gave the band a Cinderella/Britny Fox sound.

Young, Wild and Free is a decent, if not terribly original hard rock album. We Came to Rock is a pretty cool track, though nowhere near as good as the Pretty Maids song of the same name. Likewise the song Assault Attack pales in comparison to Michael Schenker's identically named track.

Young, Wild and Free is a perfectly decent album, but when you consider the sheer volume of amazing "hair metal" albums that were also released that year (Slippery When Wet, Look What the Cat Dragged In, The Final Countdown, Night Songs, etc.), it really doesn't hold up to the competition. Unless you grew up listening to Brighton Rock, this album will only interest die-hard 80's rock fans.

3 out of 5 stars Brighton Rock polishes a turd........2004-03-31

While Echo and the Bunnymen were busy writing dark, cool, beautiful albums, Brighton Rock was probably out getting perms, or getting laid in their van, or buying women's clothes.
There is something both amazing and hilarious about the album "We Came to Rock." All the songs are incredibly formulaic, but it is a formula that makes you raise your fist in the air and wonder how this album happened. With song titles like "Assault Attack," and "Can't Wait for the Night," you can only imagine the kind of tools the band members must have been. Still, there is a bit of mind blowing talent somewhere too. Not just in the sense that all of the players are proficient musicians, but now and then there are beautiful moments. The song "We Came to Rock" is a classic cheese metal ballad with over growled consents and wanky, masturbatory guitar lines. Then, cutting through the complete cheesiness are driving string instruments out of nowhere. My response was to wonder who was behind the subtle and interesting moves like that, but I suppose I don't care. They came to rock, and I came to laugh at how ridiculous, awesome, and over the top they are.

        4 out of 5 stars Great disc.......2003-12-12

This disc was played everyweekend at our parties, so much so it was almost a ritual. Not quite as good as Love Machine but still an awesome disc.

4 out of 5 stars Brighton Rock....Young, Wild and Free........2000-01-13

A truly hard rocking Canadian Band. They play excellent ballads also. I'm still looking for Take a Deep Breath, and having NO luck. I wish they were still around.

3 out of 5 stars If you are into the 80's, you'll like this........1999-08-04

Brighton Rock song Young, Wild and Free is the perfect teenage anthem. It is about just being yourself and enjoying life and not caring what the world thinks. And Can't Wait For The Night is a very romantic ballad. It talks about aguy who had a disagreement with his love, and now he has finally come to his senses, and how he can't wait to show her how he has changed. So that he can hold her in his loving arms again. That is my version of the song. Young, Wild and Free, Can't wait for the night, Nobodys' Hero, and Change of Heart are the best songs.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and unique.......2005-12-19

I would like to compliment Alison on her beautiful playing and Dave cooke for his unique and complimentary arrangement of this album. This album brought John Field into the present age and transformed it without destroying it. I am not a clasical boffin but this has sparked my interest.

        5 out of 5 stars Artistic perfection.......2005-09-01

Alison Hood plays the nocturnes of Irish composer John Field with a soft, gentle perfection; never jarring or heavy, even in the most difficult pieces. The softly played whistles and pipes lend interest and an Irish touch to several of the selections. Delightful to listen to at the end of a stressful day.

        5 out of 5 stars still a great album.......2003-10-14

just played this lovely album after losing it for more than a year and it is still a pleasure to listen to... reminds me of some great times and of a special birthday this month... it will always be special. r

        5 out of 5 stars wonderful artist.......2001-01-09

i had the pleasure of meeting this artist recently, and she is just as special in real life as she is on cd. her beautiful playing is only enhanced by her personality which has made listening to this album even more of a pleasure since meeting her. her skill as a pianist is obvious on every track but really comes into its own on 'around the fairy tree', 'a love is lost but not forgotten' and, my favourite by a long way, 'o'er the moor o'er the mountains'. i will continue to listen to this album daily as i have done since last may, and enjoy the memories.

5 out of 5 stars music fan from dublin.......2000-10-16

oh my god...what a lucky day for me when i read the reviews on this album and decided to check it out. this young irish pianist plays the music of field in a arranged in a unique and wonderful way by the well known composer and arranger phil coulter...i'm quite sure the classical snobs will have a "field" day with this one but i hope they have the foresight to look deeper into the beautiful playing on this album and realise that this is the perfect way to bring the music of one of irelands best kept secrets, john field, to a new audience. i look forward to the next album from alison hood. not only does she look wonderful, but she plays like an angel.

Frontier Free For All is the debut disc for the rockin' rodeo band, Wild Horses. The group is led by a dynamic female vocalist, Angela Rae, whose voice shines on selections from traditional country to southern rock. Full harmonies highlight this group and their electric stage presence transfers well to disc.

Each and everyone of them, Steve, Angela, Michael, and Ralph put their heart and soul into their music and show their fans how to have fun with it. This CD is terrific, I never go anywhere without it. I hope that someday they will have many more and I can then have a whole shelf full of nothing but WILD HORSES. To those of you who have never heard this CD go get it. It will lift your spirits, bring tears to your eyes, and get your feet a tappin all on this one CD. I hope everyone gets theirs soon.

This is a great C.D.!!! Anglea Rae has a beautiful unique voice and you can feel the emotion that she puts into each song. My favorite cut is Safely Home, it is a wonderfully written song and really pulls at your heart strings. Wild Horses is a band that has worked hard and I hope their greatest success is just around the corner.

What can I say but WOW! This is a country band that totally rocks! The lead singer is an awesome female vocalist and the songs range from fantastic feel good to heart wrenching tear jerkers. This is my new favorite CD! I love every cut on this CD, but there are a few songs that I just have to play over and over again, Safely Home, and You Gotta Ride, and Big Boned Sexy Woman. I can't wait to hear more from Wild Horses!
