Warmth & Beauty

Editorial Reviews

Product Description:
North Carolina singer-songwriter Thad Cockrell hails from the old school of country music, the days before Nashville went pop. "There's no 'alt' in my country," says Cockrell, who possesses a high-lonesome, wistful tenor voice. Although originally intended as a demo and not put into national distribution, his first release, Stack of Dreams (Miles of Music Recordings), was recorded at breakneck pace with veteran musician/producer Chris Stamey and received a strong international response from critics. Local artists Caitlin Cary and Tift Merritt appeared on the record as guest. Proving just how tightly knit the N.C. country scene is these days, Cockrell has enlisted two of Merritt's bandmates, the Carbines' Zeke Hutchins (drums) and Greg Readling (pedal steel), to record his Yep Roc debut, Warmth and Beauty. United with producer Chris Stamey (Caitlin Cary, Alejandro Escovedo), Warmth and Beauty is a showcase for Cockrell's songwriting and mountain spring-clear tenor; it's a collection of songs that resonate with a kind of passion you just don't find much anymore. Warmth and Beauty delivers a big ol' slab of heartache from a man whose motto is "puttin' the hurt back in country."

In a sense, The Warmth of the Sun is to 2004's double-platinum Sounds of Summer as 1975's Spirit of America was to the previous year's chart-topping Endless Summer. Both Summer compilations feature the obvious hits, and their followups collect less famous--though still worthy--tracks like "Hawaii," "409," and "Little Honda." But the 21st-century collections are sequenced by the Beach Boys themselves, and that means this volume's songs are second-tier in fame only. The casual fan whose curiosity was piqued by Sounds of Summer and picks this up for "All Summer Long" will be captivated by Brian Wilson's stops on the road to Pet Sounds ("Kiss Me Baby," "Please Let Me Wonder," "Let Him Run Wild," "The Little Girl I Once Knew"), moved by the father-son collaboration "Break Away" (in many ways the Beach Boys' farewell to the '60s), and floored by a string of five songs from the early '70s--a few of which had their genesis in the ill-fated Smile project--that are a perfect showcase for the maturity the group, especially Brian and Carl, managed to attain less than a decade after penning "Pom Pom Play Girl" ("Surf's Up," "Feel Flows," "All This Is That," "'Til I Die," "Sail On, Sailor"). Taken together, these two volumes provide an extraordinary portrait of a band attempting to straddle popularity and artistic vision, spotlighting each facet just long enough to make you want more. (Collectors note: many of these songs appear in new stereo remixes--they may not be the original Brian Wilson productions as he heard them, but being able to distinctly make out the vibraphone in "Let Him Run Wild" is worth it.) --Benjamin Lukoff

Compiled and sequenced by The Beach Boys themselves, The Warmth Of The Sun offers a rich view of the artistry and complex legacy of a band that has produced some of the most brilliant music of all time. This new career-spanning, 28-track collection illuminates much of The Beach Boys' most accomplished work. The Warmth Of The Sun is the perfect complement and companion to 2004's double-platinum Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of The Beach Boys.

5 out of 5 stars The WARMTH of the SUN~it won't ever die..........2007-07-18

The WARMTH of the SUN;SOUNDS of SUMMER;PET SOUNDS;& SMILE comprise the magnum opus of BRIAN WILSON and his legendary touring/recording session band,THE BEACH BOYS.Yes,Carole Kaye; The Wondermints;superb studio musicians;guest artists(like Roger McQuinn)and writers like Van Dyke Parks are more than pulling slack on some of these albums. But the above-named are America's greatest pop band's classics of classic Americana. The BEACH BOYS are to the USA what the Beatles were to Britain.Elvis remains King of Rock'n' Roll(nobody questions the hundreds of Presley comprises).Dylan remains America's pop Poet(with McQuinn of BYRDS renown still troubadour Prince of pop and electronic Folk)...

Brian Wilson is the genius who created a unique American music that is fun and sometimes JOYOUS to hear.If you never heard The BEACH BOYS in concert, seeing the Brian Wilson touring ensemble built-around The Wondermints is probably the best substitute. But give yourself a break~ The Beach Boys have been around more than 40 years, and made millions of listeners of all ages and musical "sophistication"happy: their WARMTH of the SUN...their choir-rich harmonies...won't ever die.

1 out of 5 stars Recycled Package #102.......2007-07-17

Do you know how long it has been since the Beach Boys released an album with new original material? I do. That would have been in 1992, fifteen years ago, when they released the totally execrable "Summer in Paradise," an album so bad that it could have been recorded by Aleutian Eskimos pretending to be the Beach Boys. Do you know how many compilations or collections of old material the band released since then? I do. If you include imports and all of the collections that they licensed to others, there have been 101 separate releases. That is not a misprint. In the past fifteen years, one hundred and one cd's have been issued containing recycled material. While Mike Love and his cohorts complain about (and sue) Brian Wilson in absentia, they write nothing of consequence, but repackage everything they can get their hands on, especially the stuff that features the real mainman, Brian Wilson. I can understand when an old band tries to coast on its reputation, but 101 re-packaged pieces of product is so far beyond the pale and so abusive of the band's core audience that it's a wonder anyone cares any more.
I, for one, cannot review "The Warmth of the Sun" on the merits of its songs, because it would be painfully redundant to do so. All that exists here are a few classic tracks intermingled with a few obscurities. As a rule (and especially when applied to the Beach Boys catalog), the more obscure the tune, the worse it is, and this collection practically screams that point. So, why would you buy this collection? I don't know. Maybe if you never bought a Beach Boys album in your life, this would be worthwhile, but with 101 other compilations to choose from, I see no particular advantage for this specific collection. Perhaps you are so masochistic that you feel compelled to buy anything that has the band's name attached. If so, I feel so truly sorry for you, as well as your ex-wife, your estranged children and your mortgage company.
Meanwhile, Mike Love is probably sitting at home right now, arranging the next batch of songs for next week's compilation. That can't be healthy for him, so let's do him a really big favor. Let's ban all future recycled collections credited to the Beach Boys. If our goal is achieved, we might force Mike to do something with an iota of creativity attached. Wouldn't that be nice? D- Tom Ryan

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Album.......2007-07-14

This album is not just another collection of Beach Boys Greatest Hits. These are alternate mixes (not remakes) of many of their best-known songs. A few are not quite as good as the original mixes while others are superior. In any case, it makes for an interesting experience, listening to our favorite Beach Boys tunes from a slightly different perspective, sort of like sitting in a different part of the auditorium at a concert. The recording quality is very good throughout. I was not disappointed with this CD.

1 out of 5 stars Lackluster.......2007-07-13

There are very few really good songs on this CD. Most of these songs must have been the "B" sides of thier hit records because neither I nor any of my friends had heard most of them. Even after listening to the CD several times, it still didn't "grow" on me. I real waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Still "Great" after all these years............2007-07-12

Great updates of some of the Beach Boys best. Some new things too. Truly expresses the title "The Warmth of the Sun" in so many ways.

Product Description

This upbeat collection reveals a new side of Davol. Delving into new artistic areas, he occasionally combines spoken word in foreign tongues with his electronic tapestries. For example, the piece "Just Like You" demonstrates an interesting melange of electronic pop with spoken word in Chinese and English provided by the sultry voice of his friend Meiji. The reliable and uplifting pop-influenced electronic grooves we've come to expect from Davol are aplenty, in such pieces as "Say It", "Human" (dedicated to a friend he recently lost to cancer), and "Lucky Day". "Ride" takes us on a percolating electronic journey that will not disappoint. And not forgetting his roots, “Necessity of Love” is a new age staple, cinematic at times, in a style reminiscent of Vangelis. It may take many years of patience between albums, but it's good to see Davol return and provide us with A Day Like No Other.

5 out of 5 stars My son's favorite by far!.......2007-04-26

I was fortunate enough to be introduced to this album while working at a daycare. My fellow employees would laugh (lovingly) at me while I belted out the choruses. Their favorite or course was hearing me sing, "I'm a nut, I'm a nut, I'm a nut, that's me!" (from The Acorn Song) :o)
I loved hearing this play in the background during playtime.

Naturally when my first child was born I knew we HAD to have this album. We keep it in the car. Even at a very young age I could tell that he liked it. Heather Forest's voice seems to have a wonderful affect on children. Case and point: when my son would be crying in the car, I would put on this music and he would STOP! Amazing!! He will be 3 years old in a couple weeks and it STILLS has that affect on him. Being older he doesn't CRY as much in the car anymore, but it's the TEMPER TANTRUMS that the music instantly puts an end to now. Don't know what we'd do without this album. Thank you Heather Forest!!

One last thing- one of the best things about this album has been my son learning the words and singing along. Too too too cute and he just LOVES it ! ! ! He looks so proud of himself :o)
He picks this album over all the other music we have in the car...even The Wiggles!! And if you are a parent to a toddler you might just know how amazing that is :o)

Trust us and buy it :o)

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for Excellent Story Times.......2005-06-03

Perfect for Pre-K to Grade 4 story hour. Kids pick up the chorus instantaneously. Three Billy Goats, Little Red Hen, Stone Soup are my cornerstones. I suggest reading aloud first. Then play the song and exhibit the appropriate pages. I use Janet Stevens' Three Billy Goats Gruff, Paul Galdone's Little Red Hen and Heather Forest's Stone Soup. Visit her website at www.storyarts.com for more ideas. I took a workshop with her. She's terrific!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fun music for children and their adults.......2004-01-04

We have had this recording on audio cassette for 15 or so years. My 18 year old son and my 14 year old daughter both remember it fondly as do my husband and I. At dinner tonight, we were singing "The Acorn Song" and it made me wonder if it was available on CD. I'm glad to see it is still available to families. The songs are both entertaining and beautifully performed. Although many are humorous, most are based on classic stories or fables so they aren't simply silly. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Just Listen to It!.......2004-03-11

As a longtime fan of Incubus and also a classical music wonk, I had to buy this CD. I read the reviews of this album after I listened to it all the way through about twice and fell in love, but the reviews disappointed me. Obviously, people have a problem with changing what are already good songs. Also, it seems like most of the reviewers aren't listening hard enough, as all of the best songs are very easily recognizable. The only misses on this CD, the Morning View songs, frankly weren't that great to begin with. The Warmth is the best track here, becuase the slightly ominous tune was captured perfectly by strings. Make Yourself and Drive are also very good. With the exception of the Morning View songs, the composer chose the songs to reproduce with a great amount of consideration, because only the melodic Make Yourself tunes translate into classical. No one would have enjoyed a string version of Certain Shade of Green or Hilikus. All in all, a great buy, but if you don't like classical or if you only began listening to Incubus with the Morning View Sessions, then don't bother, because you just won't appreciate it.

3 out of 5 stars Expected more!.......2004-01-04

As a big Incubus fan and a violinist, I thought this CD had the potential to be fabulous. I will say that you can recognize most of the songs, and it is a peaceful, tranquil way to listen to Incubus. However, often the strings sound similar to tuning instruments in an Elementary School orchestra (boy does that take me back!). Perhaps they could have selected more experienced artists, because the Incubus songs are so beautiful.

1 out of 5 stars soo bad.......2003-11-25

this is the worst version of any incubus song, even my cat could wail an incubus song better than this. even if i ever did recognize any not of this as being an incubus song, its still crap. Most of this CD is an unrecognizable slice of junk. Buy a proper INCUBUS cd!

very well done. musically creative. if you truely apriciate incubus, and you also appriciate the classical music. this album was put together very well. its a good album to relax to while driving and you just want to be calm.or sleeping to or whatever.
you can TOTALLY tell what songs are what. and after listening to this album, you will have a new look on incubus and there creativity. but seriously...i know music. and this is good and well thought out music. ---chuck says "enjoy incubus!"

Some achingly beautiful songs that burrow into the soul with each listen. It's not perfect, but much of it is damn close.

4 out of 5 stars hats off.......2004-08-06

this is a solid country effort like they just don't do them anymore. great playing, slick down-to-earth production, "mostly recorded live". the acoustics sound great, as does his ryan adams-tenor on the slow tracks. big lyrics on "she ain't no you", and with caitlin singing it's almost like whiskeytown never died. beautiful record, perfect for driving. or a barstool, for that matter...

5 out of 5 stars a must-have for any music collection.......1999-12-01

I saw Jami Seiber play with Ferron last fall and Ferron had her play two songs off of this album during the show. It was so powerful and beautiful that I was actually brought to tears and I ran out and bought the album at the end of the show. Her playing will blow you away. She makes the cello express such a range of emotion and passion. The CD is great for relaxing, meditation, or just thinking in general. It definitely has been the best addition to my collection in years.

5 out of 5 stars a delicious spirit entralling cd. one of my 1999 favs........1999-08-17

i loved her cello piece the very first time that i heard it. if you have a musical soul, i don't think that you'll be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Second sight is always best.......1999-06-07

Incredible listening pleasure. I came across Jamie Sieber at a Ferron Concert at the Left Bank in Blue Hill, ME as she was backing her up and of all the CD's I bought that night, this is the one that has received the most play. Meditation to a relaxing evening to the end of a hectic day, this CD puts me into a lucid state. I want "The Goat's Earth" at my funeral don't bury me under forest trees...when I die please bury me under the shade tree...I want to hear the drum beat, I want to feel the dancer's feet. A must to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Too exceptional to be a mere representative of joik........2002-08-06

Based on the other cds of Mari Boine's I have, I think this cd is a compilation of tracks available elsewhere--at least several of the tracks are on other cds. It is still entirely worth getting considering the difficulty of finding her work in America.

I won't use this review to go on about joik, suffice it to say it is a song/vocal tradition of the indigenous people of parts of Scandinavia and Russia. Mari Boine is one of the most popular joik performers, to my knowledge the only person as well known as her is Wimme Saari, who is also phenomenal. Boine does more than do justice to or "continue" the beautiful joik tradition. She develops it. And masterfully. You can read more about her and the tradition in the cd's liner notes, but really, it's something you need to hear, to feel. Incidentally, another bonus to this cd is the booklet included. Scholar Harald Gaski, himself Sami, contributed a small essay and the titles and lyrics to the songs are translated into english. That allows a non-Sami speaker to know roughly what is being said, but for me, it was interesting but secondary--you can feel what's going on. I'm not kidding. Still, it is a considerate and enlightening contribution.

Boine doesn't always use a musical accompaniment, but when she does it is amazing. She uses instruments from various types of music, but her ultimate instrument is her voice. How she sings is as amazing as what she sings about. She is a wise and dedicated advocate of human and environmental rights, but whether she sings of systematic political oppression, the nature we are part of, or personal grief or struggle, her extraordinary abilities convey the sincerity and importance of her messages.

The music of Mari Boine is absolutely essential for anyone who knows that music is beyond popularly dictated background noises, or "a cool song" you senselessly sing along with and dispose of when it's filled your temporary needs. She embraces the moral (ie, "politcal") inevitability of music--vocal and instrumental--it's capacity to move our souls, and the jolts of sheer energy it can send through you when your hurt, joy, anger or reverence are recognised and expressed.

5 out of 5 stars Tribal Finnish for the 21st Century.......2001-11-12

Ever been dissappointed with tribal-traditional music being too techno or too simple?

You won't be dissappointed with Mari Boine's Radiant Warmth. I absolutely adore this work and hope that I can see her perform someday.

Some pieces are soft and lyrical, like a personal prayer. Others are vigorous and communicate to a larger spirit... community...to a tribe of listeners; her voice, calling out, delicately earthy, echoing through wooded expanse, the telling of oral stories in music and chant.

If we, as humans, are able to get back to a sense of intimate, tribal communication and rhythm of the north country...this is what I would imagine it would be...in the setting of our modern lives.

5 out of 5 stars SIMULTANEOUSLY PRIMAL AND MODERN, CUTTING TO THE BONE..........2001-11-11

Utilizing her unique, powerful voice and seemingly unlimited creative sprit to update the traditional music of her Sami cultural roots, Mari Boine takes the listener on a journey back in time, to when these songs and stories were uses to preserve the history and soul of a people. She beautifully combines ancient, traditional instruments and forms with an unmistakable, unrelenting 'groove' -- not totally unlike the work of Hedningarna and other young Scandinavian bands, but completely individual. No one else sounds like this.

The album is generous in length, at over an hour, and attractively and informatively packaged. The booklet offers English translations of the songs, and there's also a nice essay on the cultural background of the artist and the material. The songs speak of love, of the hardship of living in such a rigorous, demanding environment, of family, of joys and sorrows, and of the stark beauty of the natural world.

For a recording utilizing mainly acoustic instruments, the power here is stunning. The only electric instruments credited are guitar and bass. Also present are violin, ocarina, flutes, dulcimer, melodica, chillador, charango (!), drums, and a vast array of percussives. The effect is beautiful, hypnotic, mesmerizing -- and extremely powerful.

Mari has one other recording, GULA GULA, available domestically (it quite appropriately appeared on Peter Gabriel's Real World label), and several available as imports. How she has escaped wider attention on these shores is a mystery to me.

5 out of 5 stars Chills.......2000-04-11

This Nordic genius knows how to give you goosebumps. Using authentic instruments, yet moving towards popular culture, Boine creates a mystical atmosphere catapulting the listener into far away places. Beautiful imagery. The lyrics are translated into English, and you can find a short paragraph on Sami culture.

5 out of 5 stars won't ever get tired of this album.......2007-01-06

wow- so overlooked and ignored, which is sad. I bought this way back when because it was recorded by steve albini (shellac, nirvana, etc.) and it's never disappointed me. I'm so glad I bought it!! If you had to pick two bands to "generally" compare this to, i'd say JAWBREAKER's "24-Hour Revenge Therapy" and SOCIAL DISTORTION. Two great tastes that go great together! I finally saw this band 2 years after this came out, and they unfortunately didn't play a single song from this album.... Doesn't matter, I'd listen to this album any day or any mood.

      3 out of 5 stars Pezz rocks........2002-05-27

This album is proof that Memphis, TN is home to more musical talent than just Elvis. This quartet from the aforementioned city has been around since the mid ninties, and after a 2 year hiatus, they put out another album jam packed with enough punk to make your feet tap and your head bob up and down. Pezz has a bit of Jawbreaker in them, especially in the vocals. They're not too distant, but they're not being put over the music. If you really want to know exactly what he's saying, you have to read the liner notes, which is no problem with me, since I'm sure that is more accurate than my slowly deterioriating hearing. The music is mostly straightforward punk, there's no weird time/tempo changes or messed up key changes. I know some people will say that there's nothing special about this band, that they're just another Jawbreaker clone, and that there's no reason to hear them. I heartily disagree. It's been a long time since I've heard a good, solid, no-fringes plain old PUNK album, with no special gimmicks. If you long for one CD to give you a half hour of freedom through rock that you normally didn't have, Pezz is your answer.

4 out of 5 stars Pezz's sophmore release for BYO.......2000-08-14

This is Pezz's second album for BYO, and while it's not quite as good as One Last Look, this is still an album worth owning. Songs such as New Math and Pyrric Victory tend to be catchy, while songs like February 1996 are more emotional and personal, and every album has to have its sing a long anthem which is Threadbare. If your looking for something new and innovative that's not quite like everything else being presented in the new school punk scene, Pezz is definitly a band to check out.
