5 out of 5 stars The Definitive "Firebird"!!.......2004-06-28

There are numerous recordings available of Igor Stravinsky's ballet masterwork "The Firebird" however, the 1961 "Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky" recording available on this disc is one that eclipses all other versions. The recording was performed by The Columbia Symphony and is presented in its complete length of nearly 43-minutes (most other recordings present "The Firebird" in a suite lasting only 25-minutes). The performance under Stravinsky's baton is nothing short of breathtaking. The piece's dynamics, shifting rhythms and unprecidented beauty are all clearly defined and wonderfully executed.
Also included on the disc are two Scherzo pieces ("Scherzo a la Russe" and "Scherzo Fantastique Op.3") along with a recording of "Fireworks", a piece composed for the wedding of the daughter of Stravinsky's friend and teacher Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. These three shorter works also include Stravinsky's signature rhythms and dynamic orchestrations (especially in the "Scherzo Fantastique" which echoes "The Firebird" in some spots).
This is a fantastic CD of some of Stravinsky's finest work conducted by the composer himself. Hearing Stravinsky conduct his own work brings a certain authenticity to the music. You hear exactly the way the composer wishes the music to be executed.
If you enjoy this, pick the other two discs in the "Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky" series ("Petrushka/The Rite Of Spring" and "Symphony of Psalms/Symphony in C/Symphony in Three Movements"). These recordings are just as refreshing and exciting as "The Firebird".

5 out of 5 stars Essential Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky.......2003-07-28

Unfortunately, we will never get to hear Bach play the organ, or Mozart the piano, or Beethoven conduct the 5th Symphony. But thanks to the advent of recording technology, we have been able to hear the great composers of the 20th Century play and conduct their own work. Sadly, recordings of the likes of Elgar, Strauss and Rachmaninov are all in early mono, but there are several brilliant stereo recordings available by Copland and Stravinsky. These recordings of "Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky" were made for CBS in the early 1960s, and along with two other discs (featuring the Rite of Spring with Petrushka, and the other one the Symphonies), are absolutely essential for serious fans of classical music. Often composers were not the best conductors of their own work (their expertise was first and foremost in composing), but they are nonetheless a vital document of their creative and versatile talents. For serious Stravinsky fans I would recommend getting both the Decca Stravinsky Box Set conducted by Ernest Ansermet (see my review), and the three CBS Masterworks titles of "Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky." That way you can compare and contrast, and determine for yourself whether Stravinsky himself was truly the best conductor of Stravinsky.

4 out of 5 stars Sonny James is now in the Hall of fame!!.......2007-01-11

I wanted Sonny's music before he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. He was always on my stereo during the 60's and then I kind of lost him. Now he is back.

5 out of 5 stars Ron Pruitt.......2005-09-30

It is getting harder to find real country music these days; it is refreshing to be able to here what the genre should sound like or at least resemble. This is well mastered and a treat to listen to. If you like Sonny's music this is a must.

I was looking for some of the "oldies" and these are great!
Brings back lots of good memories

4 out of 5 stars 70's and 80's recordings.......2003-10-03

The southern gentlemen Sonny James was a major hitmaker in the 50's thru the early 80's. This collection begins in 1972 when Sonny left Capitol for Columbia. Sonny had a long string of hits for the label in the 70's and then went to Monument with moderate chart sucsess. This collection is very good but not as good as his vintage Capitol recordings. Collector's Choice music is excellent in providing collectors with music they want but can't find elsewhere. Sonny James should be in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

5 out of 5 stars More Today Than Yesterday ?Yes!!.......2006-12-24

This an excellent collection for people who enjoy good ,happy, sing along songs. It just baffles my mind that bands like The Monkees, Grand Funk, and others get ridiculed so badly."More Today Than Yesterday" is just an awesome song. How can anyone not smile when they hear it?It's like being unamerican or something of that nature.Pat Upton is a great singer and the band is no slouch either. All the songs are great(Listen to "Get Ready" and you should be convinced)and "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" is just so appealing. If you don't believe me just take a moment and listen. You won't be disappointed.Highly reccomended!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Must have. .......2007-04-05

Some call it transitional music. Everything Miles did was transitional.
What a great band. Everyone soars, great Wayne, Herbie's touch, Ron's the center, Tony's the key, Miles... just funks up my bag.

5 out of 5 stars ARGUABLY THE MOST INTERESTING PERIOD OF MILES' CAREER.......2006-03-18

This remarkable box set focuses on a period of Miles Davis' career that many jazz neophytes tend to overlook. A great deal of attention is spent on Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain and Bitches Brew - all deservedly so - but each of them represent only a portion of Davis' musical scope. Of all the stylistic changes that Miles Davis undertook, few had been as adventurous and rewarding as the work he created with his second `classic' quintet lineup, featuring Wayne Shorter on saxophone, Herbie Hancock on keyboard, Ron Carter on bass and the explosive Tony Williams on drums.
Unlike the most popular works of Miles Davis, this is not easy listening music, not by any means. The music created by this quintet is challenging and demanding, which is precisely why it is so extraordinary. Repeated listening continues to pay dividends, in spades. Difficult, angular arrangements constantly veer off into ingenious, mind-boggling directions. Following the supple movements of this rhythm section is about as difficult as chasing a kitten, but soloists Davis and Shorter (and Hancock, too, who is a major component of the rhythm section and a startling soloist as well) never seem to lose their footing. It is jazz music as an intricate game of prodding and suggestion, able to go in virtually any direction, with all five members listening to each other with an intensity that most musicians could only aspire to.

4 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the music, 3 for the box.......2006-02-27

Although I am a huge Miles Davis fan (His Autobiography is essential reading), I was hesitant to make such a lump-sum investment in this boxed set, even at $70.00 for the 2004 re-issue. However, after reading most of the reviews here and listening to sound bites, I decided to pick it up. I have mixed emotions about my purchase.

First of all, the music is astounding! I concur with most of the other reviews regarding the music, and have nothing to add except to emphasize that every jazz fan MUST own these historical recordings. I honestly can't believe I have been on this earth for three decades, a jazz fan for one, and never owned this music before.

On the other hand, I was disappointed in the packaging. Yes, Todd Coolman's essay, "The Quintet" is revealing and informative, and the packaging has some rare photos that are fantastic additions. However, notably absent are the liner notes and artwork of the original album releases from which these six discs derive most of their material! I was planning to savor the original album art of "E.S.P.", "Miles Smiles", "Sorcerer", "Nefertiti", "Water Babies", "Miles in the Sky", and "Filles de Kilimanjaro", and to read what was written about the musicians and music on these albums when they were released. So, I was disappointed that this classic jazz was not accompanied by these historic visual representations of the music.

Still, the music itself is worth any price. The alternate takes and previously unissued tracks are great, and I personally enjoyed the chronological arrangement of the music. This boxed set is highly recommended and essential if this is how you plan to purchase this music. However, if you want the rest of the history surrounding these recordings, I suggest picking up the individual albums.

5 out of 5 stars From Here You Can Listen For Miles.......2006-02-02

I bought this handsome 6-CD retrospective because I wanted to dig into the birth of fusion, and Miles Davis gets the credit. The booklet is excellent, very informative. I knew that it covered the Miles Davis Quintet from 1965-68, and that the material from many landmark albums was included. (E.S.P., Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, Nefertiti, and Miles In The Sky). Dollar for dollar, that's a very efficient buy - each CD is over 70 minutes long. The material makes good on the promise, it reaches from traditional jazz all the way through to pre-Silent Way, Brew long jams. Really fascinating, diverse, beautiful, and thoroughly listenable music. The Davis Quintet creates its own atmosphere, almost its own vocabulary.

As I played one CD after another, I became happier and happier about buying 6 Miles Davis CDs. But I realized something rather obvious that I had overlooked. This was an all-star quintet. I had also purchased 6 Tony Williams CDs, and he has never sounded better. Same for Herbie Hancock, who, at the time, was something of an enfant terrible. Same for Wayne Shorter who simply smokes like a southbound train. Same for Ron Carter who had the nice habit of quietly turning up on just about every jazz record worth listening to in those days. I read recently that Davis wasn't a technical virtuoso and I guess that's true. But he had a genius for picking talent and he was certainly a visionary. This superb collection showcases some of the most interesting and pivotal music of its day. Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars One of the all-time best Miles Davis box sets.......2005-06-04

"Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-1968" features nothing less than some of Miles' best music. This box set showcases many of Davis' most innovative albums including "E.S.P.," "Miles Smiles," "Sorcerer," "Nefertiti" and "Miles in the Sky." While the music leans towards psychedelia and the impending fusion movement, this is still jazz by any stretch of the imagination. The mood is cool, intelligent and laid back. While the box set documents the inevitable introduction of electric instruments, it is a gentle preamble. The electric piano is a mere suggestion and the plugged in guitar seems light years away from squealing Jimi Hendrix type power chords. While [...] Brew would eventually pass the point of no return, these six discs suggest mind expansion, but never cross the line. With this 2004 reissue, the listener gets the same music as on the original box set release but for about $30.00 less. Considering that this reissue also comes with a handsome full-color booklet, it is a mystery as to why anyone would pay an additional thirty dollars for the original. The Amazon description claims that this contains additional tracks. While this has tracks not found on the 60's releases, this reissue has the same music found on the 1998 box set. If you've always wanted Miles' 'light trip' music in one place, the "Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-1968" is the perfect box set.

It is interesting to note that, despite the mature and sober themes, the Stanley Brothers were relatively young men at the time of these 22 triumphs. When they signed with Columbia in the fall of 1947, lead vocalist Carter was 23 and tenor vocalist and banjo player Ralph was 21. Though Monroe, Flatt, and Scruggs were spearheading the bluegrass movement with fiery licks, the Stanleys looked to older mountain music for their inspiration. Using traditional Appalachian folk forms, the Stanleys created an original and memorable songbook filled with poignant songs of mother, God, murder, and death. With piercing, mournful harmonies (sung by Ralph and mandolinist Pee Wee Lambert), songs such as "A Vision of Mother," "The White Dove," "The Drunkard's Hell," "The Fields Have Turned Brown," "The Lonesome River," and "A Life of Sorrow" remain potent, genre-defining statements. Even when the tempos are jaunty--as on classics such as "Little Glass of Wine," "Man of Constant Sorrow," and the banjo-fueled "Pretty Polly"--the subjects are deep and dark. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars early stanley brothers.......2006-11-10

it's original early bluegrass and it's "complete." not rip-roaring like bill monroe and flatt and scruggs but easily more powerful. must own for anybody who calls themselves a bluegrass fan.

5 out of 5 stars SWEET BODY AND SOUL SETTLEIN MUSIC.......2006-05-22

This is the kind of music that sooths your soul.I go to sleep listenin to this CD often.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Stanley Brothers to get first.......2006-03-20

And if you're new to the genre, perhaps the bluegrass CD period to get first. With the exception of the Carter family, I've never heard harmonies that sound this absolutely inspired and otherworldly. And like the Carter family, these songs succintly concern similar thematic territory: parent's dying, a better life in heaven, lost love. The bluegrass played by the Stanley Brothers looks directly to the mountain music of the Appalachian Mountains for inspiration, which they mixed with the contemporary (at the time) edge of the Bill Monroe that defined the bluegrass genre. There is so much depth and real life experience that easily comes through in these songs. This is music that will be listened to forever. I doubt that the feeling that these musicians so easily put forth could be successfully copied or reproduced by anyone with anything that approach the warmth and emotion of these recordings.

I'm not quite sure if any CD release of the same material matches this compilation (recording between 1949 - 1952) in terms of sound quality. And if sound quality is concern, these mono recordings sound as rich and flawless as just about anything recorded at the time (there is some unobtrusive crackling sounds), and I assume that Columbia Records has worked hard to skillfully remaster this music of the Stanley Brothers at their prime.

5 out of 5 stars composer note.......2005-06-22

To those who think Carter wrote "Man of Constant Sorrow", he didn't. As far as can be ascertained, it was originally an Appalachian mountain song of unknown origin. Richard Burnett, a blind singer/banjoist/fiddler from Monticello, Kentucky (home of many bluegrass greats), wrote the lyrics we know today, and called it "Farewell Song". It is thought that this version was copyrighted, or just written, about 1913, dating it from the year when Burnett was blinded, about 1907 (see the lyrics). Subsequent versions by Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, Carter Stanley, etc., have been copyrighted with slightly changed lyrics, but all are based on Richard Burnett's version.

It's a fascinating story. Burnett recorded with a guy called Rutherford. I am presently searching for a copy of Burnett singing the song. Wish me luck!

5 out of 5 stars Carter's song........2003-04-24

I know that carter wrote man of constant sorrow
but I never heard him sing it. other than to help
out on the chorus. I know he wrote the song for
Ralph. it has to be just a sample of what Carter
was capable of writing and Ralph's voice out shines
any soul singer I have ever heared.
I grew up in dickenson county about five miles from
Carter and Ralph so they have been my heros since
the late fortys. as far as I'm concerned Carter
Stanley was and still is the greatest (singer)that
ever lived bar none.

      Album Description

Cult 60s/70s soul heroine Thelma Jones has recently made an acclaimed singing comeback, after more than a quarter of a century of audio silence. In celebration of her upcoming UK `live' debut, Kent has compiled - for the first time anywhere - her complete 1960s recordings for the Barry! label, and all of her issued 1970s Columbia masters. Collectively, these comprise Ms Jones' entire catalogue prior to her recent comeback.

"Second Chance" offers full proof that all that prevented Thelma Jones from becoming a full fledged Soul superstar was bad luck. Just as her record `The House That Jack Built' was shaping up to be massive in 1968, Aretha Franklin covered it and had the hit that should have been Thelma's. Despite having a radio hit with the well-remembered `Salty Tears' in 1976, she found herself swimming against the tide of Disco and was unable to place any of her Columbia recordings on the charts. But what Thelma lacked in chart presence she more than made up for in soul - and here's all the proof you will ever need of that.

Writers and producers here that will excite all true soul fans include Sam Dees, Teddy Randazzo, Robert Banks, Bert De Coteaux and many more top-tier talents who were only too happy to bring something to the table for Thelma Jones.

5 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, but great for its target audience.......2006-09-26

Who should buy this set? Well first of all anyone interested in Miles Davis or John Coltrane and especially their interplay together will probably be interested, but this set seems to have been made for the completist or armchair jazz scholar. This is more of a personal library piece, to be treated as such rather than an introduction or overview of these two jazz "giants". This set covers Miles Davis' work with John Coltrane during Miles' time with Columbia Records. The albums that this would entail are:
      'Round About Midnight
      Milestones
      Miles At Newport
      Kind Of Blue
      Someday My Prince Will Come
As well as many alternate takes and live recordings not found on these albums.
So you may have heard that Kind Of Blue is a great starting point for jazz. This colletion comprises that entire album and some alternate takes, but the disc that has that album has another song at the beginning and some Miles Davis comments as well as presenting the tracks out of order from the original album order. There is nothing like putting in Kind Of Blue for the first time, hearing the low bass strumming and the explosion of Miles' first notes of "So What". Here you would have to skip to track 4 and then back around for that experience. Or what if (like me) Someday My Prince Will Come is one of your favorite albums by early Columbia Miles Davis. Sadly Coltrane did not play with Miles on every track so the album is not included here in its entirety for obvious reasons. Many times alternate takes are placed one after the other for comparison sake. Rather than listening to these discs like albums with an overall feel, these discs should really be approached as study guides and keys to the interworking of Miles and Trane.
If you are new to jazz or at least to Miles and Coltrane then buy Kind Of Blue and explore it over and over, buy Someday My Prince Will Come and listen to "Pfrancing" and see if it does not speak to you.
If you have the aforementioned albums and you do not really care about alternate takes or the liner notes, then this set was not made for you.
If you have had the aforementioned albums for some time and you love Miles and Trane, buy this set and dig deeper. Listen to the alternate takes placed next to the takes you remember from the albums. Study Miles and Trane together, the call and response, the give and take. Read the wonderful booklet enclosed with the set and learn more about Miles and trane and the other musicians in this classic quintet.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars misunderstood?.......2007-05-27

apparently some people don't understand what this album is. it is not a soundtrack of the first two games, nor is it a "tribute" or "songs inspired by katamari" album. it is a soundtrack of the third Katamari game PLUS the songs from the first two games that were NOT INCLUDED on the first two soundtracks.

      1 out of 5 stars More of a tribute than a soundtrack.......2007-03-08

This cd is actually more of a tribute to the game, rather than an accurate soundtrack. If you're looking for the music from the original game, you need to go track down an album called, "Katamari Damashii Soundtrack: Katamari fortissimo Damashii". That's the cd with all the original music. It's published by Columbia (Catalog # COCX-32760). You'll know you have the right one, by the cover which resembles the original game's cover. (Cows in pasture, rainbow). I got a hold of a copy from a Hong Kong exporter.

      5 out of 5 stars Again, a Namco Compilation.......2006-03-02

The First CD is all the missing songs from Minna Daisuki Katamari Damashii (Everybody Loves Katamari Damacy(We Love Katamari)) and all the NEW songs from Boku No Watashi No Katamari Damashii (My My Katamari Damashii(Me and My Katamari)). I also imported the game, and the music is quite good, but getting even farther from the original Katamari Damashii (Katamari Damacy). The game itself has better music, only because of the fact they have some of the great original songs. Que Sera Sera, Lonely Rolling Star, Disco Prince, Moon and the Prince. Gooooooood stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Soundtrack.......2006-02-19

No, it's not all of the songs from the Katamari Damacy series, it's the soundtrack for Boku No Watashi No Katamari Damacy, also known as Me and my Katamari. I have the import game and it's very good, and this soundtrack includes the new songs from that game, and some missing ones from We Love Katamari. The new songs, such as Shabadoobie, Jesus Island, and Family Damacy are VERY good and up to the usual standard of Katamari greatness. The 2nd disc of this soundtrack is a lot of classical pieces, that I suppose are found in We Love Katamari, but I should play through again to find out. If you're wanting some new Katamari songs from an excellent game, I definitely recommend this. If you really want the past soundtracks, then buy them.

      3 out of 5 stars ditto.......2006-02-02

Just as the other guys say this is not the songs from Katamari Damashi, and yes it should be pronounced Damashi not Damacy because Japanese people cannot pronounce the "CY" sound. After realizing these were not the songs from the game, which did not take long, I decided to give it a good listen to any ways. I did like a few of the songs Like "Katamari on the Funk" but it is not a must buy. This product is totally misleading but Ok.
