Absolutely Amazing!!! ('specially for white folk).......2004-03-27

This is an absolute must!!! I have never heard such passionate singing of spirituals from non-black choirs. Perhaps that is attributed to Shaw's minister roots. As usual, the sonority of Shaw's singers is second to none. This is a fun CD that all can enjoy...not just the choral buffs who know just how good Shaw and his choirs are!!!

Not Up to Shaw's Usual Standard.......2002-03-23

Maybe just personal taste. I don't find the arrangements and vocalizing as interesting and satisfying as "Sea Chanties" and "23 Glee Club Favorites", the latter setting a standard never equaled.

A Must CD for Choral Music Lovers.......2001-01-03

Amazing Grace is a very appropriate title for this recording. For those of you who love Sacred Harp , Southern Harmony and Spirituals, you will revel in the folk traditions of this album. Parker and Shaw arrangements, and sometimes just one or the other are so well done. The singers, of course, do an excellent job of making music under Shaw's direction. "Hark I Hear.." arr. by Parker is becoming a standard for choruses and this album will help you hear why. "If I've got my ticket" by Shaw is a wonderful exchange between solo and chorus. You will be playing this CD over and over once you hear it.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD. The thoughtful and meditative, "What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul" sends the listener awe-struck to the foot of the cross. The triumphant "Ride on King Jesus!" reminds the listener of final victory. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates musical and cultural heritage or for anyone who appreciates religious music.

Jim Mills debut solo album. This guy is absolutely amazing. I've listened to a lot of banjo music in my life, and i must say Jim Mills is the best i've ever heard playing traditional style with flair.

Jim Mills creates another epic bluegrass banjo CD with this one. Hard driving, flawess and very tastefully executed 3 finger style banjo. I particularily like his version of Don Stover's "Rockwood Deer Chase" and his amazing version of "How Great Thou Art". Banjo players will want the tabs to these songs. This CD embodys everything you love about that bluegrass banjo sound. Simply fantastic.

This is an outstanding bluegrass CD. Jim Mills, being an award winning banjo player would be expected to release a hard driving banjo oriented CD and he did. From the opening track, Bound To Ride, you can tell this will be something special. From track to track this CD has no weak points.

With help from many of today's top artists including Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas, Adam Steffey, Barry Bales, Tim Stafford and Stuart Duncan a top notch case has been assembled to surround Jim Mills' great banjo picking. Jim covers songs from some banjo greats including Ralph Stanley and J.D. Crow as well as picking on new songs. "He Came From Carolina" is a song penned as a tribute to the great Earl Scruggs and his playing and is an outstanding example of Jim Mills' banjo playing.

If you like banjo or bluegrass you will enjoy this CD. I highly recommend it for anyone's collection and listening enjoyment.

Jim Mills is the IBMA Banjo Player of the Year....and this CD shows why. He cranks...but without too much obvious effort. The banjo sounds like it belongs in the music. Great tone and timing...and great songs too.

When his brother Carter passed away in 1966, there was some question in Ralph Stanley's mind whether or not he'd continue performing his beloved old-time mountain music (he never considered the Stanley Brothers to be true bluegrass). Luckily for music fans, he decided that this music was his calling and chose to press on. By 1971, his Clinch Mountain Boys were again one of the finest ensembles in bluegrass. These 20 songs come from Stanley's renaissance 1971-1973 period (with one stray tune from 1976), one of his most productive post-Carter eras, and showcases the classic Stanley sound--raw and plaintive--across the classic Stanley repertoire: old-time folk songs mixed with staples from the Carter Family, Mainer's Mountaineers, and, of course, the Stanley Brothers. Veteran fiddler Curly Ray Cline and lead singer Roy Lee Centers offer sterling support for Stanley's wailing vocals and versatile banjo, which covers a variety of styles from clawhammer to three-finger. Bluegrass is like cilantro. Distinctive taste that you either like or don't like, or it grows on you. While it may not be up your alley, this cd contains some great tracks (1, 10, 15) worth having. Impeccable performance; tight, raw sound. At least expose yourself to some respectable talent. How I came about this CD is quite...ah...unexpected. When I was a kid, I loved the Carmen Sandiego USA game, and ended up playing it just to hear the songs rather than catch criminals. One of the songs, after a little research, was "Bound To Ride," and shortly found this CD afterwards.
