A restless departure from her country-folk sound, Nanci Griffith's sixth album pulls together an unlikely group of studio aces--Bernie Leadon, Albert Lee, Phil Everly, and Fran Breen--to shape an electric folk-rock that somehow never swamps her original material. The title track was written by ex-husband Eric Taylor, but the rest of the album is vintage Griffith: message songs, small-town songs, redolent love songs. Producer Glyn Jones shows a debt to Daniel Lanois in the mysterious atmospherics of "Radio Fragile," and if the album as a whole never quite equals her best work, Storms is a unique experiment, a sonic milestone in Griffith's career. --Roy Kasten

Amazon.com essential recording

When Storms of Life's singles were climbing the charts in 1986, they sounded like a miracle. After all, at the time, Randy Travis was just about the only young exemplar of traditional country you could hear on the radio. Travis's first hits ("1982," "On the Other Hand," "Diggin' Up Bones") helped put twang, briefly, back in the saddle, inspiring what was quickly dubbed the new traditionalist movement. So, yeah, this is an important album, but what's really important here is Travis's beautifully expressive and quivering baritone. On the bridge of "No Place Like Home," he gets down on his knees and begs his wife to take him back in--and, with that voice, it's no wonder he pulls it off. --David Cantwell

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Really good.......2007-06-26

I admit I bought this because I couldn't pass up an album that included a song called "Send My Body Home [On a Freight Train]", but there really isn't a bum track on there.

5 out of 5 stars Great Debut Album.......2007-04-08

This is Randy's mainstream debut album and one of the best country debut albums of the era, along with Dwight Yoakam's "Guitar, Cadillacs, etc, etc". The album is jam packed full of great songs, wonderful singing and playing and superb production from Kyle Lenning. There are quite a few of Randy's "Best Of" albums out there and all of them sample heavily from the "Storms of Life" album; a very good indication that the album was out of the top draw. It is incomprehensible that this album is now out of print although there are some Amazon re-sellers selling it for less than $5 which is amazing value for one sensational record. I'm not a big Travis fan (I only have two of his albums (vinyl) and one CD - this one) but the Storms Of Life albums is a necessary purchase for any traditonal country music fan.

5 out of 5 stars After 20 years, this is still the best album around!.......2006-07-03

I have nearly 50 years of recordings in my collection and this album has been in my top 5 from the day I bought it. The other reviews written here state the reasons why it is one of the best country music albums ever made. The main reason is the voice of Randy Travis and the other reasons are the songs themselves; each one is excellent. A perfect example of what is the best of country music.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely The Best!!!!!.......2006-03-19

I first heard this "tape" in a restaurant while having supper. I had to go to the music store and buy it. That was back in 1986 and now I want the CD. I have the tape and have probably worn it out. I have a CD player that I listen to on my way home from work. I wish I could buy the CD but cannot afford the money. I know I will be able to get it soon....I will have to save for it but I keep listening to the "samples" on this web site and hopefully will be satisfied until I get my own CD. I love Randy Travis and I just wish I could have this CD now. Thanks and please, if you can get the CD now, buy it and enjoy, because you definitely will!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best album of the last 25 years .......2005-12-15

There are very few albums where every song is a winner, but this is one of them. All ten songs could have been released as successful singles. "1982" (originally titled "1962" but that title was wrong for a singer as young as Travis) and "On The Other Hand" were the first two hits followed by "Digging Up Bones" and "No Place Like Home" but the quality doesn't drop one iota on the non-singles such as "Reasons I Cheat" and "Send My Body (Home On A Freight Train)" and "There'll Always Be A Honky-Tonk"

I've been collecting recordings since 1968 - this is one of my top five ever along with JOHNNY CASH AT FOLSOM PRISON, BUCK OWENS LIVE IN LONDON, COUNTRY CHARLEY PRIDE and GUITAR TOWN - Steve Earle

5 out of 5 stars For the price you can't lose.......2007-02-21

This 2 cd set consists of, as the title indicates, various 20c pieces or movements from the Naxos catalog. Sound quality is uniformly high, although for some such as Stockhausen's it's not clear if that's good or bad. What is excellent is the variety of the collection--some familiar (Debussy), others not, some pretty, others intentionally weird. Few will find every piece to his or her taste, but many listeners who do not spend much time on 20c music will find something to like. Overall, a great introduction to a period of much off-putting, yes, but also much compelling music.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2004-09-02

Some of this album is a bit over-produced, but still contains the same kind of Griffith magic. I would also recommend "Other Voices, Other Rooms."

4 out of 5 stars storms, and what makes it different.......2001-09-02

i own & love just about all of nanci's recordings. however, when i first heard this one, i hated it. it sounded totally overproduced to my ears, and i just couldn't get over the fact that the drums were programmed.
eventually, nanci's songwriting, voice and sincerity won me over & i came to love this album just as much as any of her's.
somehow she manages to say really cornball things that would make my teeth itch if anyone else said them. god, i used to be a punk rocker! but when she says anything, i just love it. can't go wrong with nanci griffith, but know the difference--her recordings vary considerably.

5 out of 5 stars I accidentally love this cd.......2001-08-18

This was my first Nanci Griffith cd, and, while now most of my favorite stuff of hers predates "Storms", this album still holds a special place in my heart.

That, and it's an elegant, smart, classic album with very few low points. Some highlights: "Listen to the Radio" took off as the fan favorite, and it's a rousing rocker, a great song. Nanci thinks of "It's a Hard Life Wherever You Go" as her most important song, and it really does have the punch of a civil rights anthem, as well as being infinitely campfire-sing-able. "If Wishes Were Changes" is a complicated take on unrequited love written after seeing Wim Wenders' "Wings of Desire," and it makes us all wish we had angels who sang in our dreams.

Me, I'm partial to "Brave Companion of the Road," my favorite track off this album. "Leaving the Harbor" is also eerie and beautiful, and "Radio Fragile" is a sharp, sad little ode to Phil Ochs.

If this album does have a clinker it's probably the opening track, "I Don't Wanna Talk About Love," but even that one has its moments: "you can hear it in a disco midnight, shouting."

Overall, this does have a more "produced" sound than Nanci's earlier work on Philo/Rounder or her later work on Elektra, but "Storms" is definitely the best of MCA-era Nanci.

At the very least, it's anything but dull. Or, as she sings on Eric Taylor's excellent title track, "is loneliness contagious? Another damn song about a waitress."

3 out of 5 stars Tender observations of romance and conflict.......2000-06-04

Texas is home to several eminent storytellers including Guy Clark, Towns Van Zandt and Jerry Jeff Walker. If you haven't already done so, add the name Nanci Griffith to your list. Her tales on Storms are tender observations of romance and conflict. With her girlish voice and a touch of Texas twang, Nanci focuses on a tried-and-true country theme - leavin.' She has a poetic gift for symbolic lyrics. "Love is but a fragile flame and trust just fuels the fire" from `You Made This Love A Teardrop.' And from `If Wishes Were Changes' - "I wish I had angels who sang in my dreams." Although delicate and sweet, her voice brims with conviction and confidence (Storms, Listen To The Radio). And while I'm name dropping names, Nanci surrounds herself with a group of accomplished musicians including Pat Donaldson (bassist with Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, Kate & Anna McGarrigle), x-Eagle's guitarist Bernie Leadon, and Lucinda Williams' drummer Fran Breen. Storms with tug gently on your heartstrings, the compositions are tightly structured, and the musicianship is first-rate. `You Made This Love A Teardrop' is well worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Notes from Bingo.......1998-10-29

Great stuff in here. It's a Hard Life Where Ever You Go is very good. True and beautifully sung. Radio Fragile reminds me of a guy I grew up with (there's probably one in every community).

By now, the world ought to know that Mark Selby was the songsmithing genius behind Kenny Wayne Shepherd's massive hit "Blue on Black." Clearly, someone figured out that there's probably more where that came from; hence, Selby's own debut, on the venerable Vanguard label. Indeed, this album contains all the necessary ingredients: blues-rock riffs chock-full of crunchy goodness; workmanlike lyrics with just enough wit to be clever, but not so much as to sound pretentious; and a backing band that sounds as if they're having the time of their lives. If there's a failing here, it's that the album is occasionally a little too glib, and when Selby tries on a ballad or a bit of acoustic blues, it doesn't quite come through. When he rocks out, though, he's capable of transporting the listener to a sweaty blues bar at 2 a.m., full of hard-core partyers making a mockery of last call. Selby's greatest asset is that he has the same unpretentious charm that's made Tommy Castro so well-known. May it serve Selby equally well, if only because the world does need more songs like "Kink in the Chain" and "Smoked." --Genevieve Williams

...curiously, the last track on said album,..all of three minutes long, performed on dobro guitar, superbly understated,.. AND not at all indicative of the content on this toe tappin' BURNER of a disc!! The progenitor of Kenny Wayne Shephard's success...NO SURPRISE HERE! "ITS' like Mercury"....one of the HOT cuts reminiscent of a Stones standard..but with a GENUINE gutsy blues import! In short,...gentle folk,..this album KICKS!! Guaranteed..to delight the ears and create electric blues ROCK Nirvana! "You got it good,..it don't get better!" Money very well spent on this freshman outing......YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!!!!

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2003-11-19

Short & to the point, Mark Selby has the musical & lyrical talent & charisma on stage of John Hiatt. Buy both CD's, you'll keep them both in rotation & want to tell everyone you know about musics best kept secret.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guitarist.......2003-09-04

I own this cd along with many KWS cd's, and their may not be many comparisons, but indeed they are both great performers. Seen Mark Selby live and he was great. Everyone has there own opinion when it comes to music, so my advice is to listen to it for yourself and then decide, don't go by what others have to say.

3 out of 5 stars Dull.......2003-08-21

I just was not impressed with Mark Selby, and, as a KWS Band fan, I wanted to be. Wasn't a song on the entire release that jumped out at me, so I resold it right here on amazon. Just wasn't my cup of tea, but it may be yours.

5 out of 5 stars Great songwriter/singer.......2003-02-12

If your main priority is guitar solos, than this may not be for you. It has some great solos but is mainly about great songs. This would be a gratest hits package where it anyone else. For Mark Selby "GREAT" seems to be the standard he starts from. On most of my better blues CD's any of these songs would be a standout. The fact that I regard most of the songs on my favourite blues CD's as good to great should tell you how brilliant this lot is. Not one song that wouldn't have HIT written all over it were it recorded by a main stream act. Although this isn't strictly blues it will satisfy even the most critical blues fan with a miriad of new treatments of some well worn blues grooves and stylings. Somehow Mark always manages to make it sound fresh and exciting. Even his nod to the old time blues artists "BLIND SINCE BIRTH" would have done any of the old legends proud had they penned it..
You'll sing along to each song after 2/3 listens. VERY CATCHY

2 out of 5 stars Rain Storms by Sounds of Nature.......2005-09-30

I was very disappointed in this CD. I did not expect a guitar in the foreground. If I wanted guitar music I would have ordered that! I just wanted sounds so I could create an atmosphere for myself.

1 out of 5 stars I only give it 1 star because that's the lowest you can go!.......2002-09-07

This is NOT what I expected at all. I simply wanted a cd with the sounds of a rain storm...that's it. I didn't expect to get some cheesy music played very poorly. You can barely hear the rain over the music. The CD states that it's "Rain Storms: Sounds of Nature." Any person should be able to safely assume this does not include music. I guess I assumed wrong. Don't buy this.

1 out of 5 stars Very poor piece of work.......2001-05-10

I bought this CD to listen to the sound or rain and thunderstorms. You can hardly hear the rain and thunderstorms for the much louder and very poor overlay of very poor music.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Listening!.......2000-07-13

I think that this cd is a great way to help you get to sleep, if you like the sound of a thunder storm, and soft relaxing music playing then you will like this cd. You hear rain, Thunder storm, and some crickets while relaxing music plays.

Album Description

If we were to describe what Cursive's album sounds like, we would be in conflict with the thematic essence of the album itself. However, since this description is intended to tell you whether or not you are interested in Cursive musically, we will mention a few bands and/or songs which have positive characteristics we find in Cursive.

Fugazi - (in their ability to mix hardcore and pop while paying extraordinary attention to song structure and dynamics)

Bettie Serveert / The Pretenders - (in their arrangement of vocal melodies and articulation)

The Cure / The Smiths - (for their moody emotion / sad pop)

Lungfish / Run DMC - (for their infectious grooves from the drums and bass)

Pixies / Modest Mouse - (for their erratic guitar styling)

R.I.Y.L. Fugazi and Bettie Serveert covering Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart"

This is the follow-up album to "Such Blinding Stars for Starving Eyes" (Cursive's debut full-length on Crank! Records).

5 out of 5 stars cursive at their finest........2005-11-29

this album could not be any better. my favorite album by one of my all-time favorite bands. i would recommend this over "the ugly organ" any day, but i love everything this band does. this record was great because it was so raw and even almost sloppy at times..some of the best guitar/drum work in indie rock exists here.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing amazing.........2004-03-05

This is a good CD. But it is just good.
I don't know what it is about this CD, but I just didn't love it. I wasn't blown away. There are certain parts in the songs that are great but the songs themselves aren't. Instead try buying "Such Blinding Stars For Starving Eyes" or "Cursive's Domestica"

5 out of 5 stars Cursive fans you can't over look this gem!!!!.......2003-07-17

Cursive's second album is a great piece of musicianship. Lets over the album.

The Rhyme Scheme - Brilliant lyrics! I love the desperacy in Tim's voice on this. Great Opener! 9/10

A Career in Transcendence - 2:18 shortest track and I'm glad it is it just doesn't work and seems to be a filler. 3/10

The Road to Financial Stability - I LOVE THE RIFF! It simple but I love the way it builds in the end when Tim Kasher yells "Don't tell me This is it!" Great song 9/10

Tempest - The vocals by Tim get on my nerves on this one which is a shame cause it started out so good. 4/10

Break In The New Year -

Proposals - AWESOME SONG!!! really good, I can't praise it enough. Everything is strong from lyrics to musianship. May just be the best song on here. 10/10

Semantics of Sermon - Great song, love the riff on this one too. The beautiful desperacy in Tim's Voice continues with the great lyrics. 9/10

Little Song and Dance - Wow, this is such an underrated song! Heavy and poinient song, this is my favorite off the album. 10/10

When Summer's over will we dream of spring? - Keeps the great run of songs going and goes deeper into the meaning of this cd. 9/10

Northern Winds - Good song it could be a little better. 6/10

Absence Makes the Day Go Longer - The lyrics could have been a little bit better to end the theme of the album and it could have been a little more climatic. Still its pretty good. I think it gets a little tired at Northern Winds. 6/10

Overall it gives us 6 REALLY strong songs and the album has a great theme it seems like a concept album. I could give my thoughts on what I think its about but that will just tarnish it. This is for you to discover and feel its meaning. It's a great album no cursive fan can go without. Its not as strong as Domestica and Ugly Organ but its still 5 star material.

4 out of 5 stars I loved this one, let's just turn to "Proposals".......2000-05-27

The moment I got this album I thought, "God this is way better than seeing them live!" The reeason, I love the vocals how they are so very raw, but at times... these vocals can be horribly hard to understand live. I liked this album a bit more than Such Blinding Stars because it was a bit more polished.

But the reason that I love Cursive so much is because of their lyrical wit. They are amazing, they strike at the bone... these lyrics make me twist up into the sheets of my bed. "Proposals" is my favorite track, I am not sure why... the others compete just as much, but the first time I heard Proposals I was in love...

And I know this really isn't something that should be considered... but I am an art major and I do a lot of graphic arts... so I will just have to say that I love the layout of their lyrics book, the way the cover looks, the picture they chose to put on their cd all of it...

I am not sure if you will like this, and when I first heard it I wasn't sure if I did. It took me until "Proposals" to fall in love with this album, and then I started the whole thing over again and took thier mastery into consideration, too.

3 out of 5 stars good but not even close.......1999-06-05

When i first heard Cursive's "such blinding stars for starving eyes" (first LP) I was thrown off my feet and amazed by it. I then learned about the second album and ordered it quickley, assured by other reviews that i had read that it had "blown their first album out of the water". No, this album does not even come close to there first one. "Early Storms" is very good but, i think that there are magor flaws in the recording of it. Especially the snare drum, sorry to be picky but the drum sounds on there first album are incredible. Second of all the songs on this album towards the end drag like syrup. It lacks the anthem type sound that the first one had. But don't get me wrong, this is no sophmore slump. But if your going to buy this album, get the first one first.

3 out of 5 stars Two-Thirds Great.......2006-08-02

When I heard the first four songs on this album, I was stunned.

They were flat, lifeless, uninspired, cliched.

This was a sore disappointment, because at their best ("The Last Bright Light"), Mostly Autumn is one of the best prog bands around.

I almost didn't continue.

Fortunately, I did.

And I was rewarded. The last 7 songs are brilliant: varied, unpredictable, soaring, delicate, involving. Songs 5-11 get back to Mostly Autumn's great strength: a wonderful blend of Pink Floyd and Enya (or maybe Kate Bush).

These songs are truly fine, and make the album worthwhile.

But I wish they had junked the tired pop of the first 4 songs and waited for more inspiration before releasing the whole package.

5 out of 5 stars Another Classic from this Amazing Band.......2006-04-25

Storms is the Mostly's latest studio release and is perhaps there best work yet. However, if you are just getting in to this Band, I would recommend the 2CD anthology to start with to get the historical feel of the Band. Next I would buy The Story So Far live DVD and then the V Shows live DVD. By that time you will be permanently addicted to these guys. Now you are ready to buy Passengers and Storms and the rest of their back catalogue. I can't wait for their next CD scheduled for sometime in 2006. If you like intelligent prog and classic rock, like Floyd, Genesis, Tull, Deep Purple, Yes, Barclay James Harvest, Rennaisance, Caravan, Camel, etc., but are looking for something new, fresh, original and leading edge, then this Band is a must to try on.

4 out of 5 stars Like a moth to the flame, I'm being drawn in............2005-08-30

Let me preface my remarks by stating right up front that this is not the kind of music that I would typically listen to. I usually gravitate towards jazz-fusion or the classic '70s progressive sound. (See my other reviews.) But this band was referenced many times by other reviews or websites of other prog bands, so I've sampled their music with their "...Anthology..." cd, as well as the recent "Passengers" and this new cd, "Storms Over Still Waters".

Initially I felt that Mostly Autumn's music was too derivative of other bands, a little slow-paced and formulaic. But I did enjoy the vocals, the catchy refrains and the long, slow guitar solo outro's to many of the songs (reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" or "On The Turning Away"). I certainly didn't WORSHIP any of their cd's, as some of the ardent fans of this band undoubtedly do. BUT....there was always something - enchanting? mysterious? dangerous yet hopeful? - that had me returning to the cds for another listen. I must be gradually succumbing to their charms - this band is VERY GOOD.

If you're familiar with the Mostly Autumn sound, "SOSW" entertains with the usual MA fantasy/contemplative/poetic lyrics, sung well by Bryan Josh and Heather Findlay, the latter of whom gets a little more aggressive in spots on this CD. Three-minute songs start off the album; I was almost surprised at the brevity of the songs, especially when they're good and you'd like to see how far the band could go with them. The three longer songs that end the album are more typical of the Mostly Autumn song structure, and EXCELLENT ones at that (loosely held together with the sound of rushing wind between songs).

Overall, I like this album better than any that the band has done before it, and I do think it is very good. Personally, it dragged a bit for me in the middle few tracks where MA didn't seem to break any new ground and stretch out like they have the ability to do. And the two short instrumentals on the CD ("Coming To..." and the album closer "Tomorrow") are unremarkable as stand-alone pieces, and probably could have been worked into certain passages of other songs. But Mostly Autumn is developing a much more unique sound as a band, and showing a greater variety of songs on their recent albums. There are still some Celtic references, but those are better balanced with some heavier passages too. And the production and recording quality of this cd is just fabulous - a real treat for your aural pleasure!

Mostly Autumn is definitely more folk and classic rock than traditional prog, but there's also an overall technical proficiency to the band that allows it to overlap into the progressive rock domain. Their songwriting continues to be impressive, and they can cast a subtle spell over the listener if one simply leans back and lets the words and music wash over him/her. I recommend this cd as the best from a very entertaining band.

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8.3/10; Performance = 8.5/10; Production = 9.5/10; CD length = 10/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.7 ("4 stars")

5 out of 5 stars Mostly Autumn's Winning Formula.......2005-08-24

My first reaction was, "Josh is singing in his own voice!" As he has always sounded to me like David Gilmour (whom I love of course, but each singer has to have their own voice. I hope he keeps exploring his own unique sound.)

The cd opens with "OUT OF THE GREEN SKY" which is a terrific rocking (gasp) opener with Josh and Heather singing back in forth in turn accompanied by sweeping guitar back ups and the entire band putting everything they have into it. Passion! Awesome! One of their best openers ever and a definite favorite of mine.

"BROKEN GLASS" keeps the momentum sky rocketing from the energy of the first song. I love how Heather and Angela back Josh up being the harmony to his melody--it's interesting and very well done. This is one of the saddest songs lyrically on the album: "I left my dreams in broken glass the foreign scent of loneliness silent sorrow now. I'm running just as hard as I can giving everything I have, everything that's left inside..."Lord how will it end?" [One thing is for sure, I'm not leaving a single dream in broken glass! Why not you as well? We can make them into reality by sheer determination and hard work, never giving up. And in matters of the heart, this song reminds me to be thankful and blessed for knowing someone even if they seem to have left, they probably haven't because love never ends.]

"GHOST IN DREAMLAND" is third which kicks back into the first song's passion and intensity with Heather singing over and over "Find my way back home." She makes the song very engaging by singing softly and then as the song crescendos she rises up to the occassion. Heather is one of the best singers I've heard and a favorite singer of mine. "Frozen horses pulling me up to the sky, heavy stars are pulling me into the storm....spinning and spinning and spinning alone," GID is a gorgeous song complete with meaningful lyrics as are on all of the songs. Music with a message. Love it.

And here comes some soothing, exquisite flute of Angela which begins something of which all MA fans adore, Heather's solos, this one being "HEART LIFE." What is so pleasing here, besides Heather's heartfelt, lovely voice is Angela Gordon's remarkably stunning backup vocals in the chorus...WOW! She makes Heather sound even better than alone. Makes me think of the lovely harmony of the Wilson sisters in Heart. Heather wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the song with Josh. Any music she touches I love. Lyric sample: "Smoke curling wind whispers a leafy lullaby, spellbound the fingers of the trees caress the sky..." Definitely a favorite of mine.

Heather sings again in "THE END OF THE WORLD." And to bring back the balance of all that MA stands for Josh comes in and rocks it up a bit. And again, he and Heather take turns back and forth, female and male vocals--the yin and yang effect--just fabulous. And one of the main components of MA's winning formula. And this song isn't even one of my favorites! But it's just gleaming! I like the "rock" effect they have begun to get into in SOSW and hope it continues. It definitely does in the next track, one of my favorites on here, "BLACK RAIN." "...Do you see the fires burning? We're gonna need some of that universal love...Did no one tell you there'd be thunder, lightning? Oh we're heading for Black Rain, oh if we don't change." Josh and Heather again sing back and forth on this song too. I love it. It's only one of their winning formulas though. Mostly Autumn is FAMILY. They all bring their best to the music and build each other up with selfless joy and in doing so, the music Scintillates. There's no egos here fighting for the spotlight. They are all in the spotlight constantly in my book because of this fact! What a refreshing, precious and rare find in a band! Love it!

"COMING TO" is a short instrumental leading up to another "winning formula" of theirs a long, epic piece of music, "CANDLE TO THE SKY" but this is actually a teaser (not really as it lasts over eight minutes) as the last song is always the epic. Another of their "winning formulas." Of all the songs, CTTS reminds me most of Pink Floyd by whom they have been heavily influenced since the beginning but they are moving away from that and finding who they really are which I have to admit, I've been wishing for. I love Pink Floyd though, don't get me wrong. I just want MA to BE MA. As David Gilmour said, "Don't copy something, copy how it makes you feel." I believe they are doing that more and more in their music. Bravo!

When I first heard "CARPE DIEM," although it was stunning I was a bit disappointed because it means "Seize Life" so I was hoping it would be their ultimate ROCK OUT song! It's not. However this is actually one of my favorites. Heather follows her heart and as she states in the song, "These days are a privilege they must be seized" she does seize my heart in this and I think that was the band's desired effect, to make the listener think about a better way, a higher path. The song is inspired by the events of Boxing Day, 26th December 2004. "Carpe Diem" actually does rock it out a bit in the end and it sure to please and it leads up to their finale and title track, "Storms Over Still Water."

"STORMS OVER STILL WATER" took me more than one listen to fully appreciate. I think I was comparing it to one of my favorite epic finales of theirs, "Mother Nature" from 'The Last Bright Light' which isn't fair. I must say that Josh impressed me the most with his singing probably on this song. As I said at the beginning of this review, he has found his voice. Great job, Josh! You guys are reaching the summit! Don't stop!

As SOSW ends with an instrumental titled "TOMORROW," I fully see this as a promise of a Great tomorrow and expect their next album to the best yet. Until then, SOSW is likely my favorite of theirs but it is hard to say as I love each and every album. You need Mostly Autumn's music. I give 'Storms Over Still Water' a very high recommendation. o8E "Dance, spin, run like a child" and---Soar!

5 out of 5 stars An Autumn treasure.......2005-08-22

I can't seem to talk about Mostly Autumn without repeating what I've said about them before. Their defining characteristics are present here as always: top-notch songwriting, a magical way with melody, a skill at blending hard rock with occasional folksy touches, beautiful atmospheres that fill every sonic space possible. Think Porcupine Tree crossed with Sandy Denny with a huge dose of Pink Floyd and you'd be scratching the surface.. and yet again, they've made an album that unmistakably changes their sound. We're hearing a rawer & darker MA than ever here, though just as majestic & powerful. Heather Findlay still has one of the most stunning voices you'll ever hear, Bryan Josh's guitar work would make David Gilmour proud, and the whole band brings a passion to the music that's only intensified with each release. In most hands the tendency toward grand sweeping song structures would have become a cliche long before now, but they're still staying down to earth enough to make it all work.

High points? Almost everything. "Out of the Green Sky" is slow and almost grungy, setting the perfect brooding-yet-captivating tone for the rest of the disc. "Heart Life" gives the best kind of sultry spine-tingling chills and is definitely in the running for Greatest MA Ballad Ever. The band rocks out more than before (e.g. the hard-driving "Black Rain" or the souped-up "Broken Glass"), which adds another allure for anyone who fell in love with "Never the Rainbow" as much as I did. There's hardly a complaint to make, except maybe "The End of the World" which has silly lyrics and meanders without much of a climax, but that's just one little flaw.

Their tradition in the past has been to conclude with a grand soul-kissing epic, and they go all-out here - we get *three* eight-minute masterpieces in a row, each more stunning than the last. "Candle to the Sky" runs the gamut from drifting ambience to a heavy singsong chorus soaring through the heavens. "Carpe Diem" is a bittersweet ballad carried by a melt-worthy Findlay performance. The title track brings everything together into the perfect eargasmic finale with the perfect guitar solo. Any one of them would have made a worthy high point in its own right; having all three strung together is almost too much beauty to handle.

Even with the insane amount of music I enjoy, I've still found hardly anyone else that transports me the way Mostly Autumn does. Any one of their discs would make a great way to begin; if you've got a human side, chances are you'll like them too.

2 out of 5 stars backround music.......2006-11-23

When I bought this I was looking forward to the blending of the flute and the harp. I have Wind Songs and some Hilary Stagg and other harp music in my collection. This CD dissapointed me. The flute is much louder than the harp and when I turned up the volume to hear the harp the flute became too shrill for my ears. My second letdown is that there is no passion or emotion in the performance. It sounds like some musicians playing sheet music for money. The musicians are very good technically, but they are performing music that they did not choose or compose and their lack of emotional commitment seems evident. Michael Hoppe wrote the music but he does not perform on any of the songs. The liner notes say that this is music to play in the background while having diner. Maybe that is what it is intended for, it's just not what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Strange coinkidink.......2006-06-01

I love Steve Hackett, Genesis, et al, but it is a bit unsettling that he named a song 'Mechanical Bride'...That was the name of a band I had in San Francisco in the late 80's... Makes me wonder if he ever saw us perform... Now THAT would be cool.

5 out of 5 stars Hackett the musical chameleon strikes again..........2005-06-26

Former Genesis guitarist turned solo adventurer Steve Hackett returned again in 2003 with this, 'To Watch The Storms', another well recived album that offers many differnt styles of music on one CD...

Hackett is a prog rocker, going right back to the glory years of Genesis in the 70's, paticularly the 1970-1977 period were the band produced a powerful array of music. Since then Steve has become a musician striving to explore ALL sides of music, like former Genesis band mate Peter Gabriel, he will try any type of sound. He has released a number of albums, including 'Please Don't Touch' (1978), 'Spectral Mornings' (1979) and 'Guitar Noir' (1992) that are considered classics.

And so this album 'To Watch The Storms', Hackett's first effort since 1999's anticipated 'Darktown' album. Here Hackett shifts gears effortlessly. The album has a tremendous mood throughout, and Hackett has a guitar sound that is truely distictive. From the calmness and nostalgia of the opening track 'Strutton Ground' to the prog throwback 'Circus Of Becoming', this is a perfectly crafted work.

Hackett has also become a very good lyricist, with some thought provoking words to go with his musical soudscapes. And he is a good singer, half prog, half blues croke is how to describe it best.

Other highlights include the uplifting 'Brand New', the unbelievably heavy political protest song 'Mechanical Bride', which Hackett almost scares you with its insanely wild instrumental passage. The gentle, elegant 'Rebecca', with it's classical acoustic guitars is a nice contrast, as is the powerful love song 'This World', with it's moving chorus.

'The Devil Is An Englishman' and 'Marijuana Assasian Of Youth' are both completely insane rock riots, with Hackett malevolently sinister on the former, and playing the Batman theme on his guitar on the later...

And to round off, as always their is a set of stirring instrumental pieces, from nylon guitar songs like 'Wind, Sand And Stars', 'If Only You Knew' and 'The Moon Under Water' to world music epic 'The Silk Road' and the atmospheric 'Pollution B'.

Oh and there is just time for some full on blues with 'Fire Island' and some Irish folk with 'Come Away' and surrealist jazz with the muted and moody 'Frozen Statues'.

This special edition version of 'To Watch The Storms' ios beautifully packaged, with great artwork by Hackett's girlfriend/artist Kim Poor, and sleve notes by the man himself for every track. If you want diversity, complexity and beauty, this is the album for you, i HIGHLY recommend this album.

It's no "Darktown" but it's good .....

I'd recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Hackett's Best Work, but..........2004-06-28

Let's face it; all of us reading and writing these reviews of Steve's music are his fans. We're seeing more grey each day, we are at or rapidly approaching the big 5-0, and like the rest of the world, we are not who we were. Neither is Steve. His composition continues to expand as it matures, he still can pull off phrases, trills, licks, riffs and tricks that surprise. He is still the finest guitarist ever recorded. Yet even that--the core of what draws us all to his music, his playing--is starting to sound...similar. Time really does march on, and it did--on all of us. Even so, this album is simply remarkable. I know lots of us complained that "Darktown"'s protracted birth resulted in a fractured sound, yet for most it was a return to form. With "To Watch The Storms," that form is reshaped, redefined and recast into something even more solid. This is the best work Steve has ever produced. And like anyone who would actually read this, I've been there for all of it. But there's the problem. He's already got us. I doubt Steve's audience is growing. My guess it will continue to be us and only us throughout his career. Hopefully, that suits him. Yet it does mean he may never grace our shores again. Our "youthful" American promoters may never envision profits in offering U.S. gigs to this profound artist. So our long, hopeful dream of a full-fledged tour over here gets more fanciful with each new candle on the cake. At least while we continue to dream we can listen to this great album.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Judge the CD by the Cover.......2004-06-23

I've been a long time prog rock fan, since it's beginning, and Genesis was, and still is my all time favorite. I search the internet constantly in the hope of finding music which will not necessarily "bring me back", but preferably take me forward. Steve Hackett has continued to amaze me with a great deal of his solo work, but, and here comes the big "but", TO WATCH THE STORMS, was a huge disappointment. So many of the tracks on this venture are just too experimentally blasé, very introspective, and do not deliver the kind of sonic upheavals that I count on Steve to give me, as he is only one of the few musicians who can still make me say "wow". There's very little wow on this cd, though die hard fans who insist that sounding the same is better than breaking new ground will probably disagree. The cd packaging is exceptional, the only real "wow" this collection of contemplative ballads has to offer. But, with Steve, I will never give up that he will produce another compilation that will take my breath away.

3 out of 5 stars My View Review.......2004-04-16

I felt the CD has some beautiful songs. I just feel that he should try to appeal to more than just 16-24. Some people are a little more traditional. He made no attempt to communicate with those of use who have been in church since child hood. True enough I am 28 and I do like contemporary urban gospel. He came really close with 'Uh Uh Peace'. The entire cd is wonderful I just believe that he should want to touch more than just one generation. For example: an a capella spiritual, a traditional sunday morning song with a foot stompin' hand clappin' feel of his own original words, maybe a country gospel toon. I just feel like he has boxed himself in to one avenue. I don't see the creativity.

Make no mistake, I love the CD. I listen to it regularly.

5 out of 5 stars Loving Greg O'quin's title cut "Unh-Unh".......2003-05-08

If you don't have this CD, then you should get it in a hurry. I heard one cut ( title: Unh-Unh) and fell in love with it, then I bought the whole CD, and it is "AWESOME", (One of the cuts on this CD). This is definitely by far the best I have heard from Greg O'quin. As long as he (Mr. O'quin) keeps telling the storm, everything is going to be great. God has really worked in you with this project. It is rejoicing to my soul everytime I hear it (everyday, all-day). GOD IS "EVERYTHING" (another cut).

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect CD If Your Going Through A Storm.......2003-01-10

thiz cd is wonderful and it will minister to your soul if you are going through a storm because the songs help you get through your storm. the song Unh-unh! and I told the storm tells you what to tell your storm. I really liked the interludes and Greg's storm because he is real with what was going on in his life and how he made it through his storms because "my God surrounds us"

5 out of 5 stars Anointed.......2002-06-06

Saints let me tell ya. When I first got the cd I was a pretty big O'quin fan. But when I put the cd in I got to the first couple of songs and judged them by the beat so I did what most people probably did and fast-forwarded to "I told the Storm (Remix)". Well I gave the cd another chance the next day at work and as I have been going through some thing I was praying and the Lord opened my ears and heart to "Awesome", "Unh-Unh!" and "I told the Storm" the Spirit began to sit in and minister to me. A word is what I receive (present tense) when I listen to it.
For anyone that's going through you need this cd for anyone that's not you need this cd b/c we all have storms come in our lifes.

5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2001-09-17

This CD is in the stores now - great CD - if you have the opportunity to pick this one up - you will love it - not saying that because - it is awesome. Shouts out to James Pickney a member of Greg O'Quin and Joyful Noyze and a member of Pleasant Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.
