This 1989 debut finds Bogguss assuming a neotraditional cowgirl persona, not all that comfortably. Ballad extravaganzas ("Guilty as They Come" and the title track) and western ditties ("Night Rider's Lament," an unnecessary remake of Patsy Montana's "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart") just cowpoke along unimpressively, but more contemporary-sounding numbers such as "Cross My Broken Heart" and Bogguss's own "Take It Like a Man" are superior showcases for her clear, folk-country voice and signposts to her much more successful and satisfying future direction. Exceptions to the not-so-hot neotrad rule: her nailing of Hank Williams Sr.'s "My Sweet Love Ain't Around" and her own saga of the modern West, "I'm at Home on the Range," which scores points for rhyming "Laramie" and "take good care o' me."

I'll never forget this album.......2007-06-09
April, 1992. This ablum blends in with the fabric of my memories for that time. I remember it was a beautiful spring that year, and I was looking out over a field of desert wildflowers, with these songs in my head. I remember making love that night to my then girlfriend behind a bush in the park. I remember learning many of these songs and playing them with my friends in bedrooms and garages. Every time I hear "Bad luck" kick in today, I still am filled with the most awsome feeling inside.
This is great, honest, no-frills rock. One of the things I like most about it is the somewhat limited vocal capabilities of the songwriter--he's one of those that has a great song but can only sing it "the best he can", which is great because it keeps things honest, real, and full of true feeling
EXCELLENT CD.......2007-05-12
BOUGHT THIS CD FOR THE SONG BAD LUCK AND WOUND UP ENJOYING THE WHOLE CD.
Social Distortion At Their Best!.......2007-03-29
This album perfects the rockabilly sound that the band began with "Prison Bound" and "Social Distortion". It is definately the most country influenced album that they have ever released but it still holds on to their punk roots. Still, it is an incredible difference from "Mommy's Little Monster". If you are a fan of that album, this is a bit of a 180.
I would agree that this is their most "complete" album. This album contains little to no filler material. It can easily be listened to from front to back. The real standout songs on this album are...
-Cold Feelings
-Bad Luck
-Making Believe
-Born To Lose
-When She Begins
-King of Fools
-This Time Darlin'
FROM A DEEP HEART.......2007-01-03
Lightlly naive in some lyrics but musically admirable, this SD CD is the best frontal entrance gate to one of the finest musical cocktails prepared with a mixture of blues, rockabilly, seventies punk and even some gospel. Lovelly violent and charming.
Their best record, no doubt.......2006-11-09
This is easily their best record--others will argue that it's the self-titled, or "white light..," but this is it. All of the promise found on Prison Bound and the self-titled is realized here. Unlike the earlier records, there's no filler (Drug Train anyone?) to be found here at all. It's just a solid rock album. Yeah, this is easily their best. It's just a solid, mature record all the way through, and the groovy bonus track makes it even better. I love the distorted vocals on that last tune....

Nothing Special..........2006-07-24
Well from the start I thought this was going to be a good album. Sadly I was mistaken. I usually don't make bad choices because I always screen my music before buying. This time I didn't which is a mistake. It started out good but after hitting the 4th or 5th track they all seemed to sound the same and nothing impressed me anymore. It just seems as if the band stopped trying after the first 4 songs. Don't get me wrong there are a couple of tracks I do really like a lot. It's just that many of the tracks do nothing for me and sound the same. Here are my ratings...
1. Dopesick - 10/10
2. Beginning Of The End - 9/10
3. Return To Zero - 9/10
4. Glass Jaw - 8/10
5. Deep Colors Bleed - 7/10
6. Mailbomb - 7/10
7. Bedsores - 4/10
8. Slowburn - 3/10
9. Somewhere In Between - 6/10
10. Of A Lesser God - 2/10
11. Pitch Black - 4/10
12. If Only - 7/10
13. Thick Skin - 3/10

This cd just got so boring and just wasn't that good. I don't know maybe it will be right for you. I am warning you though do your research before hand otherwise you could end up like me.
Not Impressed.......2006-05-23
I didn't like this CD very much. A couple of songs sound alright but I really don't like the vocals, kind of whiny. A lot of the songs sound the same. Not a fan.
When does death follow?.......2006-01-26
I was introduced to Systematic through a show HBO used to air that showed live shows of rock bands (can't remember the title), I was impressed so I rushed out and picked up Somewhere In Between. The best way you could describe Systematic's sound is just that of a good rock band, the riffs are heavy while the vocals are reminescent of the grunge era. The songs are nothing more than straight-forward rock anthems which is actually refreshing to hear because they do it so well. Systematic came out during a time when they really should've hit it big, their sound is radio friendly, but somehow they were looked over which is sad because they have so much more potential than most of the radio bands out right now.
Each and every song on Somewhere In Between is good, they just don't stray from the treaded path much, there's not a lot of experimentation going on. Dopesick is just an all around rock anthem, I mean it's got the great vocals, sing-a-long chorus and very good beat. Glass Jaw show a lot of depth however, and proves to be one of the CD's true highlights. Bedsores is just a classic rock song, something everyone is sure to like. The vocals show such depth and the lyrics are quite deep and I also like how the band plays throughout. Of A Lesser God is another great song with good vocal distortion and a nice chugging riff throughout. It's actually really hard to put this CD down, it's solid in every sense, but when all is said and done it feels kind of incomplete, like something is missing.
My favorite songs are Dopesick, Beginning Of The End, Glass Jaw, Bedsores, and Of A Lesser God. I think the only people who won't like this are the people who don't like rock, afterall this is good clean fun right here. Besides, this has been out for quite a while so you can probably pick it up dirt cheap, I got it cheap and it hadn't been out but maybe a month or so. If you're in the mood to listen to some good rock songs that are sure to remind you of days gone by, look no further than Systematic's Somewhere In Between.
Systematic: Prime example of heavy rock.......2005-07-09
Before listening to this album I did not have the faintest idea who were Systematic or what they sung. This CD was purchased by accident and by the time I realized the mistake it was too late. So I continued the purchase and a few days ago I listened to the album release for the very first time. 'Systematic' is relatively a new band on the heavy rock scene and while it's riffs and chords are highly repetitive song to song, the songs are totally enjoyable and not to lite. Infact this is a prime example of heavy rock with a touch of nu-metal. This album 'Somewhere In Between' is almost a hour long with 3 good songs, 'Glass Jaw', 'Slowburn' and 'If Only'. Fans of Staind, Fuel and Godsmack should enjoy this flavoured heavy rock-nu/metal extravangza band.
Noise rock and its best.......2005-04-12
I know that some people will wonder what I mean when I say noise rock. Well a couple of years ago I was trying to think of a way to classify the sound of bands like Systematic, Trust Co. and Skrape. What I came up with was noise rock. Noise rock means that it is a CD that you put into the stereo for a lack of something that sounds more appealing. You play the first song and get into the album, but by the third song you are only aware that the album is still playing, but you aren't really listening to it anymore. What this does is create the feel of a good album that you can listen to from start to finish, with only a few standout tracks. It is those songs that make you pay attention again that are those standout tracks. Anyways I think that Somewhere in between is a prime example of this definition. I've had the album for a couple years now, and I drag it out from time to time, normally when I'm going to sleep or playing a videogame or something. What Systematic does to create the feel of noise rock is this, the song construction is based on a format of repetitive riffs, normally two or three chords, for the verse of the song. What this does is cause the mind to wander, granted it is still an enjoyable experience, but not memorable. However through my definition I must include these things. Often time on CDNOW I have read people make refernces to bands that don't quite fit, or saying that someone can sing, when in reality they just howl well. I can say with supreme confidence that this is an album with a definite melody and vocal talent. Some songs are more up tempo, but I would not say they have an edge. To say Systematic as edge is like saying a butter knife has edge, sure it's true (They play in drop D with some screaming, distortion, and darker subject matter) but it is skewing the common sense of the definition. The stand out tracks, or the songs that break you out of your comfort coma are "Deep colors bleed" "Pitch black" and "Thick skin". My personal favorite song on the record is "Glass jaw." If this record sounds like something you are interseted in I would suggest you sample these songs as well "dopesick" and "of a lesser god" to get a good feel for the album. I'm not sure whether or not I reccomend this album to anyone, if anything if you consider buying this album realize that it is more likely to fill a hole in your collection then become a staple of it. Thank you for your time.

There is no way to write about Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth without acknowledging that the album was inspired by the 1996 death of Cindy Bullens's 11-year old-daughter, Jessie. Bullens had taken a long break from recording when tragedy prompted her to write and record these songs. But to dwell on the particulars of her awful experience would be to diminish the universal nature of a song such as "The Lights of Paris" (which could be about anyone who has lost the love of another) or the redemptive power of "I Gotta Believe in Something." Bullens has a voice that is honest and simple, yet capable of the assured performance that only experience brings. It cuts through the ringing guitars with pure rock & roll passion. Truth be told (and herein it is) these songs and performances represent the best of what popular music has to offer: the delineation of our pain and the tools to see us through it. Had she exorcised her sadness with a dark, highly personal work, Bullens might have felt better, but what would have been gained? Instead, with a little help from friends Bonnie Raitt, Bryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, and Rodney Crowell, Bullens reminds us why we listen to music in the first place. Michael Ross

Everyone should experience this CD.......2005-07-22
As a pediatric oncology nurse, this CD has very special meaning to me. I try to share this music with as many of my patients' families as possible. Sometimes my families are feeling so many emotions, they can't put them into words. Cindy Bullens does that for them. Even if you haven't experienced a loss such as Cindy's and some of the amazing children I have had the pleasure of taking care of, this CD will touch you in a special way.
A very powerful and emotional album..........2005-02-23
This is a very powerful and emotional album inspired by the death of Cindy Bullens' daughter Jessie. I hate imagining the loss of your child. There should be some sort of law of nature in which no child can die before their parents.
This release has vocal contributions from Bonnie Raitt, Bryan Adams and Lucinda Williams who sings beautiful harmonies on my favorite song here..."The End of Wishful Thinking". There is also some very touching vocal's from Cindy's teenage daughter Reid on the song "As Long As You Love". Other contributors include Benmont Tench and Rodney Crowell.
This album is much more about hope and coping and learning to live again rather than dwelling on her loss. Included are photos and some inspiring liner note from Cindy as well as from Dave Marsh who also lost a child to cancer. This came out in 1999 and it would nice to hear something new from Cindy again.
"I gotta believe in something
That there's just plain nothing
Don't sit right with me"
Tremendously moving, absolutely glorious.......2003-03-24
This CD features excellent, moving and very thoughtful rock of the highest caliber. Bullens' vocals are super and her guitar work is excellent, but neither begins to compare with the quality of the poetry she has written in each of these songs. This CD represents a triumphant recovery from a deep tragedy, the death of her daughter, Jessie. BRAVO!
A Moving Tribute.......2003-02-24
Cindy Bullens is a powerhouse vocalist. I remember having met her many years ago when she was rocking the stage as a backing vocalist on an Elton John tour. Many years...and tears have obviously passed and she (we) finds (find)the voice of her soul in this amazing album. The quality of the songwriting puts it in the caliber of the best of Don Henley...I wish he could have sung on one of the tracks. The beautiful "As Long As You Love" (Scarlet Wings) is a masterpiece of emotional poetry and the fact that she is acompanied by her daughter Reid adds a special and touching voice. I recommend this album to everyone. Buy it for yourself and listen to what loss and love sound like. Then buy a few more copies as gifts for your friends and family to cherish. Don't burn copies...the original is the only way to go. The booklet and written message are valuable additions to the package. Dave Marsh put it beautifully: "Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth is a miracle."
BITTERSWEET.......2002-10-26
I remember hearing Cindy's "Better Than I Ever Been Before" back in 2000. The song was so warm. It was obvious that a woman who had pulled herself through some serious pain had recorded that song and tried to be as optimistic as she could. It was so sunny yet weary. Come to find out, Cindy wrote not only that gem but this courageous whole album after the unfortunate passing of her eleven year old daughter Jessie. "Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth" is a beautiful album. You may have not lost your daughter but you feel the sadness, anger, remorse, and all the feelings that go through losing a lost one. The entire album grabs you and it's an wonderful album for someone whose lost a child. Or anyone whose lost anyone that's really close to them and they want to find hope in that particular suitation. A great album, nevertheless.

Suzy is a doozy.......2004-09-22
What can I say? The voice of an angel. Country, blues, swing, Western, you grow it and Suzy Bogguss can cut it. This album "Somewhere Between" is one of many showing the fantastic talents of this lady. It's a shame Patsy Cline couldn't have heard her voice. She would have approved I'm sure. Suzy Bogguss has paid her dues. She has withstood the test of time. Hopefully, this fine talent will be around for a long, long, time.
Brilliant debut with interesting mix of songs.......2004-03-20
Some people criticize this album for including western songs, country oldies and contemporary songs in the same album but I think it all adds to the charm.
Western songs are represented by I wanna be a cowboy's sweetheart (a superb revival of the Patsy Montana classic, especially appreciated by those who had not heard the original), I'm at home on the range (a new song) and Night rider's lament. Country oldies are represented by Somewhere between (a Merle Haggard song) and My sweet love ain't around (a Hank Williams song. Guilty as the come is from the Rodney Crowell songbook. The remaining songs - Handyman's dream, Cross my broken heart, Take it like a man, Hopeless romantic - are all new.
Suzy demonstrated on this album that she could sing any type of country song, that she had a superb voice (echoes of Emmylou) and that, if given the chance, she could become a major star. For whatever reason, Suzy never quite became a major star but she has made many wonderful albums and has a significant fan base.
If you enjoy any of Suzy's music, or if you enjoy quality contemporary country music generally, you will surely love this album.

Rawer and bolder than fellow L.A. hardcore folkies X, the Geraldine Fibbers have lashed out with a frighteningly successful debut album. Lost Somewhere Between the Earth and My Home is an oppressively heavy record, both musically and emotionally, that brings punk rock as close as it has ever come to sounding rootsy. Ferocious and painfully beautiful, singer Carla Bozulich can't seem to decide if she's Patti Smith or Patsy Cline. Similarly numbing and relentless, Daniel Keenan's bleeding guitar and Jessy Greene's weeping violin grind and moan like the Velvet Underground reinterpreting Creedence Clearwater Revival tunes. In other words, the Fibbers growl resembles 10,000 Maniacs--that is, if they really sounded like ten thousand maniacs. Throughout Lost Between, Bozulich wails over broken and destructive relationships--that common lyrical bond between classic country and gothic gloom-rock--as if she'd met the devil at the crossroads, pierced his tongue, and then given him a ride with her to hell. She sings about sinking to a point so low that pitiful hate is the only place to turn--and where half that hate is violently thrust at those who've abused her, while the other half gets nursed inside. Sometimes she tells stories, like the grotesque tales in "A Song About Walls" and "Richard." Other times she just spews narcotized hallucinations like "Lillybelle" and "Marmalade." But always the imagery teeters nervously between goodnight prayer and bad nightmare. --Roni Sarig
Customer Reviews:
Amazing & Powerful Music.......2002-10-11
I bought this album after seeing the Dragon Lady video (I'm probably the only person who saw it. LOL!). Dragon Lady is great but every song on "Lost Somewhere..." is as powerful as DL. In fact, this album is so powerful, I can't listen to it too often because it's so gut-wrenching. And yet because it's so rewarding, I want to listen to it as often as I can. The music is so alive and vibrant and spontaneous, it's what music should sound like. And the lyrics are amazing. It's a CD I'll be treasuring for a long time. Long live the Geraldine Fibbers.
The world was robbed of this band..........2001-01-21
As someone who over the last 18 years has owned at one time or another well over 3,000 CDs, tapes, and albums, I have to say that this record is in the top 10 of all I have ever heard. To quote Frank Sinatra (via Staurday Night Live) Carla Bozulich, the lead singer, has chunks of Courtney Love in her stool! This is the fiercest, most fully-conceived female-led punk rock record of all time. Hands down... How to describe the sound without putting people off-- it's punck-rock country-blues, played at blazing volumes. The musicianship is outstanding-- this is a band captured at its absolute PEAK. This record captures that rare magic of hearing a group of dedicated musicians playing together with a sense of purpose. It is inconceivable that this record did not lead to the break-out of this band. One suspects that the ....... (and relatively undeserved) success of Hole and Courtney Love led to this record getting overlooked. Does the world only have room for one strong female rock singer at a time? Even if that were true, one listen to this record will confirm that Carla was robbed! Everything you hate about Courney Love, Carla does NOT have! We were robbed of the experience of watching music this good succeed.
The subsequent Fibbers album, Butch, has its moments for sure, but this one sets the standard.
Lately, Carla has done an album with guitarist Nels Cline (a later member of the Fibbers) under the name Scarnella, that is very raw, rough and unrehearsed. It's a distant echo of this album, though.
If you love music, it is your DUTY to buy this album. It is in a class all by itself.
The Geraldine Fibbers.......2000-10-11
When Carla sings she sends chills up my spine. You music lovers know the chill I am talking about. The only way I know how to describe this woman is shes sings with the experience and pain of Billy Holiday and the passion of Wendy O Willams(maybe more apparant on the album Butch). The music all together is fantastic! You can hear her influences of punk, country, blues and whatever else they wanted to throw in the mix. This band should have made it big. Some of the lame bands out there that made it big can't even hold a candle to the Geraldine Fibbers!
Musical Abusement Park.......2000-04-02
the emotional pitch of this album swings back and forth so frequently and fluently that there have been times i've literally had to stop listening because the ride was too intense. it's in the way the bass and viola of the opening "lillybelle" lull you up and up and up before the guitar pulls you over the top, hurtling you down faster and rougher and scarier than you thought things would get. lillybelle sets the tone lyrically as well: she's one of a cast of empty, wasted, battered, dreamy, graceful, stoic, resilient characters. "get off of that trip" indeed...except there are 11 more songs liable to lock you right where you sit.
by the time you hit the too-good-for-pop-radio "dragon lady" you're prepared for anything, and get it, straight through to the ultimate album closer "get thee gone," a moody waltz at once punk and country, resigned and defiant, inviting and discordant. as a whole, the album is not really punk and not really art-rock and not really country and not really indie. like the lifestyle it portrays, it ain't all pretty, but in the end you find yourself cycling back through it over and over again.
side note: this is the only live band i've ever seen avoid the encore facade, simply stating "ok now we'll play a few more songs for our encore" and playing the remainder of the set instead of walking off and having to be artificially coaxed back by an audience desperate for more. and this is their best album. need i say more?
Plays like the hoedown before the apocalypse..........1999-07-01
That more people know about Shania Twain than Carla Bouzlich is a big shame. Buy this album if you're convinced that country has been sold out to hat-wearing yuppies or that punk has gone stale. Her vocals and lyrics will make you think of a drug-addled Patsy Cline. Much like the legendary Cline, Bouzlich fully understands the value of writing songs that are deceptively simple yet hold an sinister undercurrent to them. Just as the music starts to lull you, you feel the hand of the devil just barely on your shoulder...

Album Description
On their third full-length album, genre bending duo Hungry Lucy prove to us, yet again, that the confines of one musical style just won't contain them. "To Kill a King" seamlessly traverses the musical spectrum from somber darkwave to catchy pop without missing a beat.
Fans of Hungry Lucy's first two releases, "Apparitions" and "Glo", will not be disappointed with this fresh batch of inspired electro-organic productions crowned with Christa Belle's haunting voice.
The title track, "To Kill a King" couples a driving Depeche Mode styled production with emotional female vocals. While "Rainfall" evokes the electrified songwriter feel of Dido or even Madonna in her more contemplative moments. The uplifting vibe of "Shine" pulls together elements from around the globe with a soaring vocal melody. The melancholy "Good Girl" is a stripped down piano & vocal wonder that tugs hard at your emotions, while the pure synthetic "High Price of Mistakes" manages to sound icy cold, yet emit a warm glow all at once.
It's this type of beautiful contrast that Hungry Lucy are passionate about, and fully demonstrate on "To Kill a King". Their talent for blending the familiar with the exotic captures you at first listen and leaves you wanting more.

Subtle gothic journey.......2006-06-13
This is the first CD by Hungry Lucy that I've listened to, and for me it was an acquired taste. On the first couple of listens I found it intriguing but not exactly compelling ... but for some reason I kept putting it back in my Discman ... and gradually and then suddenly I was loving it. The title tune is the one that sticks in your head most, but for me all the songs on this story cycle CD are memorable and unique. To me, this needs to be digested as a whole, as we follow the female protagonist in her journey from "killing" her king to forgiving him. We're traveling with this character on her internal trek. This is really not overtly "gothic" music, although it can generally be put in that category; it is sad and even somewhat mournful, and I kept envisioning medieval castles and landscapes as I listened. The title song is actually quite triumphant in tone and there are some enjoyable remixes which are actually dance-trance music. I've just gotten HL's "Apparitions" based on my love for "To Kill a King," which overall I've found to be a very nourishing, satisfying listen.
Color me surprised!.......2005-03-15
I bought this CD because I've been enjoying several of Hungry Lucy's free Amazon downloads for about a year now. The little guilt fairies were starting to poke me everytime I listened to them, so I figured it was time to purchase one of their CDs. I have to admit, when I received it and realized that the album comprised a story, I was a little skeptical -- I thought it sounded like a gimmicky concept. I popped in the CD and was very disappointed on my initial listen. It hadn't been what I'd expected -- then I listened to it again. Really listened to it. And the unexpected happened -- I found myself incredibly moved by this story of a woman escaping an abusive relationship. This album captures the feel of a dark fairy-tale, which I love. The emotions the Queen feels are not stereotypical, and the final outcome is not a fiery Hollywood cop-out. I found this to be a wonderfully sung story of betrayal and ultimate triumph through inner strength. My favorite tracks are Shine, To Kill a King, Rainfall and Good Girl but, really, the whole album is good.
I never stop respecting artists who push themselves and try something new with every release. The Hungry Lucy team set out to do this and, I feel, accomplishes their goal. I will definitely buy their next album, and I'm encouraging my friends to give this one a listen.
Disappointed. This is boring........2005-01-27
I have Hungry Lucy's first two CDs and I love them (except maybe the last couple on Apparitions which were just a bit to depressing and slow). They stayed in my car CD player for weeks when I first bought them. I was so looking forward to this new release. However, for the most part I just don't like it. It's boring. There're only perhaps a song or two that hold my attention. There isn't enough variety and some of the lyrics are a little silly. Hopefully in future releases the band will get back to songs like Alfred, Bed of Flames, In the Circle and several others on the first CDs that had a more upbeat tempo.
Inspired and beautiful.......2005-01-18
First, read Mistress of Shadows' review; she says it more eloquently than I could. Then buy this CD.
Darkwave electro-Goth at its finest!.......2004-12-22
A conceptual tale of a Queen summoning the courage from within herself to leave her unloving husband, 'To Kill A King' is Hungry Lucy's third release, and quite possibly their best endeavor yet. It's rare to come across a group that not only lives up to prior achievements but actually surpasses all expectations. Hungry Lucy just keep growing as musicians, outdoing themselves with each new album. I absolutely adore 'Apparitions' (it's destined to become an underground classic) and 'Glo', for me, was an amazing accomplishment but 'To Kill A King' is simply phenomenal and I haven't praised a record with as much fervor as this in a while. Christa Belle's vocals are sweetly enchanting, the beautiful yet melancholy lyrics contain the strongest songwriting I've heard from them thus far, and War-N-Harrison's ingenious musings are as haunting as ever. The melodies here are a lot tamer then they've been in the past but I was hardly disappointed by that. Quite the contrary, I feel their more subtle approach was a smart direction for them to take. They've proven they can do more than simply put some good beats together (and, believe me, they can!). There's still some synthy electronic stuff present, however, they've shifted gears a bit by incorporating more acoustic instruments this time around. There's even a piano solo on "A Lifetime Remains" and what sounds to me like a violin, though there's no mention of it within the credits, giving the Null Dull Mix of "You Are" a Middle Eastern flair. The song I especially love, though, is the emotional ballad, "My Beloved", including additional vocals by Alexx Reed from ThouShaltNot and Kristy Venrick from The Azoic. At first I was bummed to see there were only four remixes, unlike previous releases, but they are all so incredibly done, it was probably wise of them to merely choose the best of the best, making this a very solid album with absolutely no flaws.
To my ears this is PERFECTION. Hungry Lucy is one of the finer groups in the Gothic sub-genre today and I urge you to give them a chance if you're looking for something fresh and inventive for a change.
You won't be skipping tracks with this CD, I promise you that. Instead you'll be hitting replay, over and over again.

I saw Theresa on the Sandy Beaches cruise, and bought her new album immediately, and have also given some as gifts. The woman can SANG! She has a Bonnie Raitt-ish quality to her voice, and her songs are fun and catchy. My favorites on this album are The Winds of Change, Why Does the Wind Cry the Blues, and All That I Am. It's a great blues album- I highly recommend it.
This woman's got the blues!!!.......2003-03-31
I first had the pleasure of hearing Teresa & the Rhythm Tramps on Delbert McClinton's Sandy Beaches Cruise in the Carribbean. Her ENTIRE BAND is unbelievably good! I bought all three of her albums on the ship, and I plan to see her as often as possible, whenever possible. Especially noteable on this album are the tracks; Come Up & See Me Sometime, I'll Find Someone Who Will & May You Never. (Jerry Peterson on Sax is a real treat, he plays two saxes at once!)

I bought and gave her CD's for xmas presents this year... that's how much their music impressed me. She is WONDERFUL in a live performance. Her entire band has energy - if you sit down while in the same room with them then you must not be able to hear the music!

Could Be His Masterpiece or Simply Just One Of Them!.......2006-04-27
As a new collector of all of David Olney's recordings I have found songs with highly original lyrics and melodies. I told David, after a recent concert in Georgia, that The Wheel is an impossible recording to listen straight through - each song is too thought provoking or too melodically rich to be played just once; not to mention the arrangements which are a perfect match with his rich deep voice. As years pass, this effort will be referred to as a milestone for all American singer/songwriters.
The Circle Game.......2005-03-08
Long before Joni Mitchell penned 'The Circle Game' the cyclic sweep of seasons, of social circumstance, of celestial movement, of love's ebbing and flowing were inspiring poets and philosophers. Observing these was the survival means of farmers and hunters. Olney's,'Wheel' manages to embrace the gamut of these observations without sounding cute, trite, or try hard. It's one of the most impeccably conceived and performed discs of recent times. In it abides a folk wisdom blended with rootsy Blues Rock conveyed with a voice that is alternatively worn and rough-hewn, sweet and romantic. None less than veteran music critic, Dave Marsh provides the warmer notes. And he does so with affectionate elan, speaking of how 'Olney's spirituality centres on a universe governed more by love than malice, in fact more by love than any other single quality.' Well, familiar grist as this might be, Marsh adds that Olney's songs give us 'life not only observed but lived at the deepest level, and conveyed to everyone who hears it with commanding artistry'. There's the gospelly,'Voices On the Water', a glorious paen to committment,'Now and Forever', the gravelly rendition of,'God Shaped Hole' and 'Boss Don't Shoot No Dice' which would reward devotees of John Hiatt. Deanie Richardson's fiddle & mandolin provide lilting commentary for the weary Civil War General's
lament,'Stonewall'. It would seam perfectly into Ken Burn's memorable movie soundtrack on that subject. This isn't a revolutionary disc by any estimation, as it follows familar grooves. But its maturity has a consolatory power which improves with each rotation.
A POET WHO CAN ROADHOUSE..........2003-11-10
David Olney continues to amaze and delight me. Every release that he brings forth contains some of the finest, insightful and poetic songwriting that exists today. He delivers his songs in a variety of styles - from gentle and reflective folk ballads to blues-influenced growlings to out-and-out roadhouse rock and roll. Each and every one of them comes across honest and full of wisdom and emotion - there's nothing contrived or false about any of them.
Olney's latest effort is full of the images of the wheel - from the title to the pictures on the cover, to various references in the lyrics, to the very programming of the cd. Heck, even the cd itself is round (what an innovation, right...?). Seriously - a lot of thought and care went into this recording, and it shows time and again during listening.
The album begins, ends, and is punctuated from time to time by short tunes that are reminiscent (as another reviewer noted) of Gregorian chant or Renaissance polyphony - which is appropriate, Olney being a modern Renaissance man if ever there was one. The final track of the album places the four previous short pieces into a round together - and the effect is stunningly beautiful and illumination. As Dave Marsh astutely points out in his notes to the cd, the track `Revolution' is - very purposefully, I'm sure - centrally placed. The rest of the program turns around it nicely. The song itself is beautiful and allegorical - I heard Olney perform live just last night at a house concert (what an excellent venue for such an artist!), and in introducing this song, he said (and I'm paraphrasing - I wasn't taking notes) `There are two types of revolutions - the natural ones, such as the earth turning around the sun, the seasons turning over the course of a year...and the type that overthrows a government. This song is about both.'
After the short opening track, `Wheels', Olney gets things moving strongly with `Big Cadillac', proudly and easily showing his love of the blues. This blues influence shows itself again in `Chained and bound to the wheel' and the raw `Boss don't shoot no dice', with its nod to Albert Einstein's comment that `God doesn't play dice with the universe' - everything has a purpose and works according to a logic that we might or might not comprehend from moment to moment.
David Olney can write a love song as well - his past recordings are full of beautiful examples of that song form, some of the most memorable I've ever come across. This album isn't lacking for them, either - `Now and forever', `Precious time, precious love', `The girl I love' and `All the love in the world'. Every song he writes is written straight from his heart - and he's never shy about letting the listener know how he feels.
`God-shaped hole' is a reference to the ideas of the French existentialists - `guys wearing berets and chain-smoking', he called them last night - and speaks of the spiritual detachment and isolation that we sometimes feel when faces with setbacks in our lives. As with many of Olney's serious tunes, it's not without an apt infusion of wry humor.
`Stonewall' is a moving look at the aftermath and horrors of war, through the eyes of a tired, saddened and world-weary Stonewall Jackson, wanting nothing more (or less) than to return to Virginia and live out his days in peace - `Let me cross over, over the river - and let me rest in the shade of the trees'.
Taken as a whole, this album works on a level to which many artists aspire and dream - it's a complete circle. I suggest spinning it over and over again - it's one of his greatest accomplishments.

If there's a precious tone to Michael Feinstein's interpretations of the American songbook, it probably stems from a fervent dedication to preserving the original context of his material. This is, after all, a musician who spent many of his formative years in personal service to the late Ira Gershwin. This collection further underscores that commitment, with the lush sound of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (augmented by the piano trio of Alan Broadbent, who also provides all but one of the arrangements here) adding considerable dramatic resonance to Feinstein's performances.
While singers from Sinatra and Streisand to Fitzgerald and Bennett have imbued many of these songs with considerable dollops of jazz, blues, and their own strong personas, Feinstein mines melancholy jewels like "Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year," "How Deep Is the Ocean," and "By Myself" for all their introspective emotion. "Somewhere" pays tribute to Bernstein with glorious, unabashed melodrama, while "Laura" (one of the most recorded songs of all time) gets recast in something approaching its original intent via an arrangement written for this recording by composer David Raksin. Feinstein himself penned the album's notes, paying careful tribute to each composer represented and noting that all were Jews, yet their music came to represent a richly American spectrum that included black and white and encompassed jazz, the theater, and even classics in its scope. There's a lesson herein, and one that spans more than mere history and musical archaeology. --Jerry McCulley

Musical Wit in an Orchestral Setting.......2004-01-04
The one problem a record collector encounters when he has an album too many of one artist, is the tendency of the artist to sing the same songs in succeeding albums/settings. Feinstein, who I consider as the leading proponent in reviving the American Popular Song standards to its unfettered glory is backed by a philharmonic orchestra in this album with the musical direction of conductor Alan Broadbent. And yes, he sang some songs that were sung in sparse and acoustic settings in his previous albums. As usual, just like any cabaret singer who never really sings the same song twice (listen to the grand old dames of cabaret like Julie Wilson and Mabel Mercer), Feinstein delights in the varied ways he can see a song in different contexts. Having said that, I thought he was a bit overly cautious in exploring his rich bari-tenor (sorry for this oxymoron but that is the word to apply to his voice) in soaring the vocal lines of Kern's The Folks Who Live on the Hill. Other than that, he was at his wittiest and conversational (not to mention just plain beautiful) voice when singing I Won't Send Roses and he can revisit the Bernstein/Sondheim Somewhere without evoking the famous version of uber diva Barbra Streisand. If you like good crooning vocals in a grand and orchestral setting, this is the album to listen or give as a gift -- you/they won't regret it.
A Cabaret Singer Grows Up.......2003-03-14
"Extraordinary how potent cheap music is." -Noel Coward
Like Coward, Mr. Feinstein seems to understand the power of popular, romantic song when flung into the void of an apparently cold universe by an all too human, understated voice...I first heard Michael Feinstein sing and play the piano umpteen years ago in the mad, bad '80s. At that time, I found his choice of material from the great 20th Century American composers refreshing & interesting, his skills as a pianist were good, and his diction to be above average. Yet his voice at that time was a bit weak--there was too much bravura nonsense, too much vibrato and he may have been too young for some of the songs that he sang at the time.
Well, we've both matured, (I hope), and Mr. Feinstein has delivered a remarkably smooth, yet heartfelt performance on this album. I'm particularly impressed by his vocal smoothness and emotional restraint, especially on "Love is Here to Stay", "How Deep Is the Ocean", "Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year" & "I Won't Send Roses". Mr. Feinstein appears to really understand the depth of feeling that these words and music evoke in him and us. The vibrato is there when needed, but the ripeness of a mature singer is beginning to be heard on his recordings and the Israeli Philharmonic simply gives his singing wings. The only song that doesn't seem to fit is "Stormy Weather"--I kept hearing Lena Horne in my mind's ear, rather than a polished cabaret singer. I hope that Feinstein continues to grow in vocal power and subtlety as he does here. A lovely album for sophisticated romantics.
This cd is about average, it could have been better.......2002-08-18
First I would like to say i'm a Michael fan. I own all his catalog. Even though i'm a fan there are some things about this cd that I find in bad taste. Please let me explain!
I know it is hard to always be creative. There are just so many ideas to go around and then you have to start duplicating others. This is known as copying what others have done.
For this cd I felt like some of the arrangements were too long. For example, Laura as it was performed hear is a six minute song. It really should have been done in two minutes. I'm an engineer and I edited this version of Laura to run two minutes and it is just perfect. Sometimes less is really more. Also, I felt that some of the other songs didn't really have top notch arrangements attached to them. If the arrangements would have been better I whould have had no choice but to bring out the 5 star rating for this project.
To talk a little bit about the voice of Michael is my pleasure. His voice seems to be getting better with age. I have always liked Michael's voice and will continue to do so.
I will give this cd a favorable recommendation!
Fabulously Fantastic!.......2002-07-21
Feinstein has outdone himself with this collection!! He is in fine fettle with songs that only He can do justice! His interpretations and stylings are beyond compare and trust you will not be disappointed with this recording!! Feinstein is simply fabulously fantastic!
Michael has done it again.......2002-07-12
S'Wonderful, S'Marvelous.
If there is one thing you can say about Michael Feinstein it's that he knows how to put over a song. His new cd is absolutely magnificent, these are the only words to describe it.
Somewhere, By Myself, Stormy Weather and the rest of the songs are beyond compare. Do yourself a big, big favour and don't miss out on this cd; you'll love it.

Soundtrack to the last several months.......2002-02-08
I have listened to this CD non-stop for months now. (I happened upon him playing in Portland when some friends went to a show. ) I don't see much about him "out there" in the media, but was happy to see he was on Amazon. A must for your CD changer, kind of pop, only more intimate. What can I say, I painted my whole house to it.
Bound to become famous.......2002-01-13
Steve Tannen is not famous yet, but he will be within the next year. HIs lyrics are so deep and meaningful and his deep voice is almost like Lenny Kravitz. "SIng me to sleep" is particularly excellent, and it is impossible to listen to his music without craving for more. I wait anxiously for his next cd, and hopefully by then, more people will come to appreciate him. I am in love with this cd, and i highly recommend it with flying colours.
