Popular on the Lone Star college circuit and barely known outside it, Cory Morrow is a very fortunate son of Texas. His native state has given him plenty of roadhouse troubadours to emulate, a loyal audience that embraces him as its own, and the pick of Austin-based musicians to add substance to an artistry that might otherwise seem pretty shallow. Co-produced by the ubiquitous Lloyd Maines (Joe Ely, Jerry Jeff Walker, Pat Green), Morrow's music substitutes pleasant and sincere for striking and original. Though he shows more thematic ambition than on previous releases (reaching a little too far on the vaguely spiritual "In Spite of Spite"), his material still tends toward the clichéd ("Take Me Away") and the generic ("Dance by the Rio Grande"). A serviceable cover of the Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil" highlights that song's bluegrass roots, while Morrow's version of Drivin N Cryin's "Straight to Hell" bristles with more conviction than he brings to his own material. --Don McLeese

Maturing work from Texas troubadour.......2002-04-17
This release finds Morrow's songwriting maturing from his earlier booze-soaked works (not entirely missing, mind you) to introspective songs of romance, morality and faith. Celtic-flavored love songs such as "More Than Perfect" and lamentations like "(Love Me) Like You Used To Do," find Morrow probing deeply into the complexities of relationships. Many of the tracks, fleshed out with producer Lloyd Maines, lean on acoustic playing, but Morrow still kicks up some electric two-steppers, including the title tune and "Straight to Hell." The standout "Drinkin' Alone" combines a shuffle rhythm with fiddle and steel to make a danceable tune out of a rather sad tale.
The craft and balance of Morrow's latest situates his music between the singer-songwriter sound of Bruce Robison and the graceful sophistication of Clint Black. It's a mix that would play well outside of Texas, if only Morrow could find the time to tour abroad.

Album Description
Color Outside the Lines finds GLAD reclaiming its long tradition as both an instrumental and vocal band. For close observers of the group, the direction of this recording will come as no surprise. "It's a matter of being true to what we are," says Ed Nalle. "The guys in GLAD have always seen themselves as players and singers. While the a cappella material has expanded our audience and ministry in a great way, we don't want to be one dimensional. We feel like it's important to continue to do what comes naturally, that is, to utilize the gifts God has given us -- instrumental and vocal." For the first time in some years GLAD has collaborated with new producers. Mark Baldwin, a Nashville session guitarist, artist (Brentwood Jazz Quartet), and GLAD alumnus from the early '80's, seemed the perfect candidate to draw the best out of the band in the studio. For his outstanding programming abilities and pop sensibility, the group elected to work with long-time friend and producer, Joe Hogue (Larnelle Harris, DC Talk, Billy and Sarah Gaines ). The result: a collection of the most artful, accessible tunes recorded by the band in a decade.Through all the recent changes the band's sense of purpose behind all their work in the studio and on the road remains clear. "The music we do is entertaining, but our ministry's confrontational," says Ed Nalle. "We feel called to explain to people who the Jesus is that we're singing about, and that His ministry among us demands a response. We tell people about sin, about the consequences of sin, and that Jesus came so that we could avoid those consequences and have a joyful, abundant life. We entertain, and we challenge, and that's what we're going to continue to do."

Not their best album.......2006-12-21
Not that it's bad. If you're a Glad fan, it's certainly worth buying. It's worth buying for the title song alone, as far as I'm concerned, and there are a couple of other pretty good ones on here too. So yeah, add it to your Glad collection.
But if you don't own much Glad music already, this is not the album to start with.
For one thing, it does not contain _any_ of the a capella music that dominates most of their best work of the last two decades. Pure and Holy Passion at least has the (excellent) bonus cut track, but this album has no acapella music whatsoever.
Even if you are ambivalent about a capella, this isn't Glad's best band album either. Captured in Time, for instance, has a higher percentage of really good songs. This one seems like it is pretty much just another album for Glad.
Lest this review sound too negative, I should point out that it _is_ still a Glad album, and they _are_ very talented musicians, and the album _is_ good. It's just not _as_ good as some of their other work.

Downhome country multimedia funhouse.......2001-07-04
Musically, the Memphis-based Apple combines the downhome styles of Lucinda Williams and Libbi Bosworth, the sassiness of Wanda Jackson, the hillbilly twang of Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn, and the free spirited zaniness of Cyndi Lauper. And much like the latter, she can turn on a dime from humorous to heart-tugging. "If Money's the Root of All Evil" proclaims, "If money's the root of all evil, I tell ya, I must be a saint," while "Fooled by the Heart" contemplates the cliff-diving side-effects of falling in love. "My Exercise Program" details a personal approach to health in the wake of a busted relationship ("smokin', coughin', jumpin' to conclusions, stretching the truth..."), and "Shiri Shiri Naka Naka Jyoto Ne" plays upon Japanese slang for a certain female asset.
Apple's band dishes up a generous helping of twang, supplemented by superb rockabilly rhythms on "Why'd You Get So Gone" and "Bears in the Woods." And though their Memphis roots provide some of the blue notes, they'd sound just as home in Texas as they do in Tennessee.
Another reviw from San Antonio.......2001-01-07
Nancy's voice manages to drawl with natural southern beauty, unforced. Her band and she fit together like those dancers I admire so much in honky tonks - you've seen 'em too; they've been dancing together so long they know the others' move before it's ever made. Can't buy tightness like this, I think it has to occur naturally.
Though she owns a sound all her own, I hear elements of Wanda Jackson, Neko Case, Marti Brom, Rosie Flores. (comparisons only beacuse I hate when someone raves about new music without giving examples of what to expect)
I'm a sucker for warm ballads, and there's a killer on this disc too - Small Town Blues. Great duet with Jay Harrington, (Time For You) and killer bluesy - torchy song called I'm Here To Collect demonstrates Nancy's no one twang pony.
Outside The Lines is enhanced with delightful rom data that includes a visit to her home, meeting her band and friends,
If I thought this disc sucked, I'd just keep my trap shut, but dammit, this thing rocks with an honesty I thought deserved mentioning - in spades.
Overall, I'd say Nancy Apple's disc is a real peach,
