The Flatlanders--Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock--first came together in Lubbock, Texas, in 1971. Along with musical saw player Steve Wesson and mandolinist Tony Pearson, they recorded one of the great "lost" albums of all time, a quirky acoustic-music gem that finally saw the light of day in 1990, when Rounder released the aptly named More a Legend Than a Band. Ely, Gilmore, and Hancock have since gone on to forge distinguished musical careers: Ely as a Texas roots rocker, Gilmore as a mystical country crooner, and Hancock as a celebrated songwriter. Now Again, produced by Ely, marks the group's first album-length collaboration in 30 years. And if it lacks the charm of their first effort--there's nothing here that compares with Gilmore's "Dallas" and "Tonight I'm Gonna Go Downtown"--it still has a certain appeal that comes from putting three old friends together in the studio and rolling some tape. With the exception of Utah Phillips's "Going Away," all the songs were written by Ely, Gilmore, and Hancock, and they sing them in various duo and trio combinations. Some work better than others--standouts include the bouncy rocker "My Wildest Dreams Grow Wilder Every Day" and the country ballad "Down on Filbert's Rise"--but all are worth a listen. --David Hill

Now Again, by Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock—collectively known as The Flatlanders—marks the first album-length collaboration between the trio of acclaimed Texas songwriters since their debut album three decades ago.

Now Again was ostensibly produced by Ely, but the album's tracks were a true collaborative effort. The songs (with the exception of U. Utah Phillips' "Going Away") were co-written by the trio, and most of them feature the rough-hewn vocal blend of all three men ("It was fun to learn we could still sing harmonies," laughs Ely). Besides the session musicians, two other original Flatlanders joined Ely, Gilmore and Hancock for cameos in the studio: musical saw player Steve Wesson and vocalist Tony Pearson.

"We said, let's not put any limits on this thing," Ely says. "It freed us up a lot. We had to resist the urge to write a 10-verse song. Every line became important. We had to think about the structure of the songs as a whole. It was a very different kind of writing than what we would do as individuals."

But there are touchstones that the music on Now Again shares with the best of Ely's, Gilmore's and Hancock's music: there is an abundance of clever wordplay; there is the freewheeling blend of folk, rock, country, and blues that has always informed their work; and there is the feeling of lazy intimacy, of old friends tossing music and words around like softballs. Songs such as "Waving My Heart Goodbye," "Yesterday Was Judgment Day," "Now It's Now Again," and "Down in the Light of the Melon Moon" can croon, swing, rollick, or cry, depending on the whim of the three tunesmiths. --John T. Great raw soul!.......2007-01-12

We've all heard enough Sly, PFunk, etc. Not that there's anything wrong with that...THEY ROCK. But, it's nice to know that there were so many funky people that didn't get on the Top 40. This CD compilation has a ton of very cool stuff. It's worth owning just for the Supersouls' Loaded To The Gills(though I wish I could hear the whole thing! A few of these tracks are edited, but not in a bad way). Put it on and DANCE.

A HUGE thank you to the people who rated this album. It is gold.
For non-funk-o-philes, which I am, all I can say is: imagine all of your favourite 70s shows and then amplify the theme songs by about 1000, and you'll get close to where this little beauty will take you.
I have bought a fair bit of stuff off Amazon, and this is the first CD that I really reckoned everyone else should know about.
Whoever it was that wrote that "if you want to pay a fistfull of bucks for funk" list knows what they are about. I have played this thing thrice over and it just gets better.
Do yourself a favour, buy it, whack it on your headphones and wander the city Shaft-style ... people will puzzle about your slightly odd head gyrations while you're cruising the vege aisle, but that's because they don't know better yet.
Don't ask me to describe the choons, I can't, all you need to know is that your life is lesser without them.

If this ain't funky enough for you..........2006-02-03

If this 80 minute power house of rare and raw late 60s early 70s funk doesn't do something for you, something is wrong... It is the type of stuff that some funk searching DJs wet their pants for and do nothing but dream of... that one rare obscure ultra funky find that NO ONE ELSE has. Well, now this label has reissued it... can't say how long it will remain in print, but I can tell you this, unless you happen to be an expert of expert collector on EXTREMELY rare funk, odds are this collection is going to be a gem that will remind you that no, you haven't heard it all... and maybe more juice like this is hiding in yet other vaults waiting to surface!!!

Begining in the nasty James Brown "Mother Popcorn" era, the groups also reflect the influences of other funky soul powerhouses from the era including Archie Bell and The Drells, Dyke and the Blazers - - and of course the JBs themselves and the emerging Memphis sound. "Down Home" Funky drumming, driving bass, biting bluesy syncopated rhythm guitar and yes, quite a few Hammond organs epitomize the sound. Tunes range from horn driven instrumentals to hard core soul shouting.

Surprises include a funky James Brown Apollo melody as well as super funky version of War's SLIPPING INTO DARKNESS that actually outfunks the original ! My favorite includes the Lyn Collins sounding ultra bumpin' masterpiece DON'T GO, by the Aristocrats long before they were a really dirty joke...There's also a bit of ultra funky psychadelic soul in the form of the Ebony Rhythm Band and The Soul Seven. Finally its topped off with a real cool wa wa driven/early Kool and the Gang sounding STREET SCENE and a nice slick sounding version of SCORPIO.

All in all this is some ultra rare groove juice from the vaults that you definitely don't want to let pass you by !

Very pleased.......2007-06-10

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this CD. True, I could have listened on line before buying but that would have taken the fun out of the purchase. Besides, I really didn't care for the CD the first couple of times I listened but now I really love it. It's not something to listen to all the time but given the right circumstances e.g. a small gathering of friends, it's perfect. If I'd listened to online, I wouldn't have purchased it.

Sumptuous and mellow.......2002-11-28

The six men of the King's Singers present sweet and light-hearted madrigals of such English composers as Morley, Weelkes, Dowland, Wilbye and Byrd. The thirty five selections include "Now is the Month of Maying", "Though Philomela Lost Her Love", "Sing We and Chant It," the celebration of tobacco entitled "Come, Sirrah Jack, Ho!" and a host of other fa-la-la-la-la venues interspersed with wistful laments. I love the rich, sonorous sound of a male vocal ensemble, with countertenors, tenor, baritones and bass, and these six singers do a great job. Occasional instrumental accompaniments by lute and tabor are included, but this group doesn't really need it--I could listen to them for hours all by themselves. Also quite enjoyable, as well as educational, is their earlier release, "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour: Italy, England, France, Spain and Germany". For a more risque' take on the vocal music of Renaissance England, you might get a kick out of "The Art of the Bawdy Song" by the Baltimore Consort with the Merry Companions.

One of the Best Collections of English Madrigals.......2002-03-27

Any fan of the King's Singers will regret not having this album in their collection.

This album offers a veritable feast of the choicest English madrigals found on any comparable album. From the obligatory "Now is the Month of Maying" and "Fair Phyllis" to the more obscure "Tan ta ra, cries Mars," there is certainly enough on this album to bring a smile to lovers of Renaissance music - and a spark of recognition to anyone who sang traditional madrigals in high school or university. For serious students of early music, this album comes very highly recommended.

Among the more sonorous offerings on this album, Jones' "Farewell, Dear Love" and Dowland's "Come Again," cannot be ignored. Nor can Bennet's immortal "Weep O mine eyes" be matched more musically than here by the King's Singers.

This album has been played again and again for almost 6 years as both serious listening and background working music. And it has yet to lose its delight.

A Delightful Collection of English Madrigal.......2000-08-16

With 35 tracts to enjoy you're sure to find a couple of favorites. I gave this CD 4 of 5 stars compared to 5 stars for the King's Singers World Madrigal Tour CD. If you prefer all your songs in English, this will be your 5 star CD. Tract 32 "Come again" is my favorite due to the surperb tenor lead and melodic development. Compared to many polyphonic early music styles (1300s-1485), this era (1500-1610) provides many memorable melodies.

This is an excellent sampling of English madrigals. This presentation, given by an older roster of the Singers, is a nice introduction to the world of the madrigal, and English madrigals in particular.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Two discs of '60s and '70s funk, containing rare studio recordings and unreleased live cuts from Houston's Kashmere High School Stage Band - directed by Conrad O. Johnson. Monster drum breaks, as heard on Funky 16 Corners and Cold Heat comps, including songs sampled by DJ Shadow and more. Includes 40-page booklet, rare photos and bonus documentary by B+ on Enhanced CD.

I listened to the segment about the Kashemere Stage Band on NPR and was definitely amazed...

Listening to many of their tracks if no one told you would you believe that this was... high school band club???
Think... band clubs - - you know really bad big band arrangements with drummers who hit the high hat on the one and three and sometimes knocking over the crash cymbal, the note flubbing brass section and the greasy haired music teacher with the horn rimmed glasses named Mr. So and So always sending you to the office for sleeping or making fake f*rting sounds in class to relieve the bordom - - But what a minute, this is the deep south, late 60's/early 70's... enter an inspired bandleader who played with the greats, got inspired by the new sounds (Otis Redding, JB, etc.) and had a dream and vision to unite these guys, create timeless music that people would be listening to down the line, give them something to work hard on and be proud of... and KICK BUTT - - first in BAND competitions around the world, but then in record stores and on the radio. Alas, Conrad Johnson did it... creating a band feared as an undefeatably tight funk unit... and with a rhythm section so strong, long after the group fell into obscurity, rap DJs were sampling it.

On this record you'll hear the sounds behind the story (*Somebody needs to make Kashmere's story into a movie - - talk about a man inpsiring young kids to do their best !!) - - Johnson not only took his guys into the studio but recorded just about every performance (and apparently put a lot of work into his charts too - - amazing, considering that now-a-days most band directors just order them over the net.) You'll also hear ample space for members going off, powerhouse originals, and tunes demonstrating inspiration - - and remarkable hipness in an age when music teachers were anything but! No wonder the band always took the prize wherever they competed... In addition, while the band may not have been as tight as the JBs (hey they were just kids), trust me... they could have opened up for him and NO one would have complained...

As a sidenote, if you dig KASHMERE, check out the VOICES OF EAST HARLEM... a group with a similarly inspiring as well as funky story... and the PROPOSITION'S AFRICANA, another youth group of the era who were insanely bumping.

All in all rare funk... and a window into the long lost time and sound. Like the song says... they were SUPER BAD !

Heard about this band on NPR and had to buy the CD! This album is awesome and it is remarkable that high school aged musicians worked at this caliber; what an incredible teacher they had to inspire them! Really good grooves, excellent music to clean house to, or to listen to at a party. You can't sit still while this CD plays!

Texas Thunder Soul .......2006-11-11

I read about this recording in a review in the Wall Street Journal and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. End to end this recording is phenomenal. You would not know that these are high school students with the level of musicianship demonstrated on tracks such as Boss City, SuperBad (would make James Brown proud), Headwiggle, and $$ Kash Register $$. It is definitely a musical delight!

This is the best CD I have bought in a long time. If you love funky 70's tunes, especially if they sound like something from a Starsky and Hutch car chase scene, then this is the CD for you. These kids had talent!

this is a happening Collection right here. collections like this is the reason why Schools have to save the Music because this is a Slamming Collection of Jams. Funky Drum breaks,Bass&Horns that are slamming. so many styles are covered here,but the Funk is front&Center. the Funk is timeless&never gets old. even 30 plus years later this Collection is still rocking a House party. Props to these brothers for bringing the Funk.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Life and Death On The Great White Way.......2007-06-24

Bob Fosse's 1979 ALL THAT JAZZ is perhaps most famous for the extreme reaction it provokes: you either love it or you hate it. There is no middle ground.

Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a celebrated stage and film director famous for creating dance numbers with a super sexy style--and truly chaotic professional and personal life. Even as he edits a film he has recently directed, he begins rehearsals for a new Broadway show. Even as he duels with his acidic show-biz ex-wife over the needs of their daughter, he cheats on his girl friend with any lovely chorus girl who wants to fall across his bed. He goes from crisis to crisis in a round of late nights fueled by nicotine, caffine, alcohol, and drugs--and he loves every ego-gratifying moment of it. What he does not love is the heart attack he has in the middle of it all.

What divides viewers is not so much the plot as the overall style of the film. Like Joe Gideon, Bob Fosse (1927-1987) was most famous for his musicals, which were often akin to beautiful but distinctly dark hallucinations of super-stylized motion showing lots of skin. With ALL THAT JAZZ, Fosse takes his unique, highly surrealistic musical style and combines it with the similarly surrealistic approach of such master directors as Fellini. The result is a film that shifts between past, present, and future with glittering musical numbers that leap from the mind of Gideon himself to make wry comment on his egocentric madness--and in which beautiful show girls become the personification of death.

As Joe Gideon, Roy Scheider (perhaps best known for his tough-cop role in THE FRENCH CONNECTION) truly gives the performance of his career; he is amazing in the role of the driven, egocentric director/choreographer who will stop at nothing to pursue his desires, professional or otherwise. The film also gives us two performers who rarely appear on screen: Leland Palmer as Gideon's ex-wife Audrey Paris (a role based on Gwen Verdon) and Ann Rhineking as Gideon's long-suffering dancer-girlfried Kate Jagger (a role, ironically, based on herself.) Both prove extremely memorable--as does Ben Vereen, a performer I do not usually like, appearing here in as the emcee of Gideon's final and most memorable hallucination.

The cinematography by Giuseppe Rotunno is sharp, clean, disquieting, and manages to convey the New York of the late 1970s in remarkable detail; the editing by Alan Heim (who also worked on such memorable films as NETWORK and STAR 80) is also memorable. Indeed, be it lighting, costumes, casting, or overall art design it is virtually impossible to fault the film at any level. Even so--ALL THAT JAZZ remains as likely to divide viewers today as it did in 1979. Movie musicals have changed a great deal over the past decade or so, but ALL THAT JAZZ remains a unique offering. You either get it or you don't; you either like it or you hate it.

There are at least two DVDs on the market. One is a no-frills edition with a good transfer; the other offers several bells and whistles that fans of the film will enjoy. Recommended in either version.

A Fosse lovers must see. I was up for the main group of dancers for this movie oh so many years ago. I remember what I wore to the audition. We all showed up at the St. James theatre in NYC even though there was no audition notice in the trades and no announcement. I remember Fosse coming on the stage and laughing saying "how the hell did you all know about this...?" Well, word of mouth among the gypsies, that's how! He had already chosen his dancers but he liked to see what was around just in case. I was always called back and got to the last call back. Too bad right! Well the rest is history...get this dvd, it is a piece of history and a kind of dance, director, choreographer and discipline that no longer exists. SO sad!

Well executed, entertaining, musical.......2007-03-25

The film is appearantly a loose auto-biographical account of the film's director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Chicago, Star 80). A scrutinizing look at obsession leading to self destruction and finally the transference of pain to others. The film has too many technical high points to mention. Choreography goes without mention and has been mimicked by modern artists, sometimes blatantly. The screenplay is complex enough to be interesting but remains in the realm of 'easily digestible.'

Since I adore the movie, I can't help but love the soundtrack to All That Jazz. I'm not sure this CD would move every listener as it does me, but I see every scene as I listen and can't help but dance along now and then. Like the movie, this soundtrack is bittersweet and very raw in some places, cheeky and sentimental in others. For a Fosse junkie like me, it's a must have.

Loved the DVD and this CD is just as entertaining. George Benson oozes showmanship so much so that it comes across just listening. "On Broadway and Bye bye love" are the stand out's.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Well, when I saw that this album had zero reviews yet I just couldn't resist. I've passed through the first couple listens and have been very happy. This is a follow up to an album that not only gave me sonic fodder for about six months, introduced me to the world of DJ mixes, and alienated me from alot of my friends who were into much more "normal" artists... It was the album that single handedly redefined the way I saw music. Obviously I had high expectations and was very anxious about hearing it.
This album lacks some of the quirkiness found on the original Now Listen! It is also a much faster paced/dance-ish album. I guess to me the original Now Listen! was a hip hop mix and this is a dance mix. Ultimately it is well worth the investment, and a great mix for anyone who is interested in an album that will take them for an exciting musical adventure through time and space.
If you don't know the original, it is a bunch of songs from various genres mashed up with a bunch of samples and scratching... cool stuff, hard to describe. This is the same way, just tweaked a bit.

Well I picked this cd up last after all of the other three aquabats albums, and I was very surprised. The sound made me want to get up and dance. This cd is very short and more of a ska dance feel, it's classic. Many people disagree when I say this cd is there best, there are only ten songs but Playdough and CD Repo Man are so good plus the fact that Idiot Box and Martian Girl are originally from this cd makes them even more fun to listen to, this cd is essential for Aquabats fans and a ska fan.

Playdough- So catchy! Better than Super Rad. 10/10
Martian Girl- Long, 2nd best song about a Martian. 7/10
Ska Robot Army- A great song! Makes me want to party. 7/10
Idiot Box- Excellent. Slower than the remake but still great.8/10
Pinch & Roll- Wow! Hilarious and a good ska raggae feel. 9/10
Tarantula- A little repetitive but still funny and decent. 7/10
Marshmellow Man- Another great song, sound like the Toasters.8/10
Aquabat March- The only track I occasionaly skip, still ok. 5/10
CD Repo Man- Best on the cd, one of the best Aquabats songs.10/10

As you will see all of these songs on the cd are very high rated with one exception. You probably think I'm just rating these songs high because I just like the Aquabats, well if you don't beleive me then check my other review for the Fury Of the Aquabats or just buy the cd, trust me it's there best.

Evildoers beware...........2004-09-14

Everyone's favorite ska superheroes burst onto the scene with this debut album and it's obvious from the start that they are one of a kind. The album offers up 10 ridiculously catchy ska anthems about, well, basically nothing, but who cares? With songs as infectiously silly as "Pinch And Roll," who needs deep meaning? This is a great CD, but it pales in comparison to their second work, "Fury Of The Aquabats," which contains revised versions of a few of the best songs here. But for fans of the Aquabats, this is a classic CD.

Fantastic Debut Effort!.......2003-10-02

As always, The Aquabats have a style unlike any others. They have an excellent sense of humor and don't take themselves too seriously. Their songs themselves are also very catchy.

I love this CD... it is really the best ska cd to have been released in a really long time... NOt only does the music rock, but the bats themselves are super rad.. I met most of them at a concert, along with aaron brackett of reel big fish, but anyways umm for the people who like the bats I suggest you visit their cool website... and become an Aquacadet!!!! its very cool.... oh and this cd has all the classics like martain girl, playdough (which is the best song on the album) Cd Repo Man, Tarantula, just a lot of great songs.... The Bats also do the themesong for a new show on cartoon network, but I forgot the name... All in all I highly recomend this cd and every other cd buy this group... They are the greatest Band EVER!!!!...

BE OPEN MINDED AND TRY THIS CD!.......1999-11-24

This CD is GREAT. A friend of mine, Stevie, suggested this CD, because she told me it was her favorite band. I never even heard of the band before that. NOW It's my new favorite band. It consists of a unique type of music. I can only describe it as, maybe ska, punk, and some comedy. But, really it's neither, because it's better! TRY IT! I GUARANTEE YOU, YOU WILL LOVE IT!

Enjoying The Pleasures of K. Battle & C. Parkening.......2007-05-06

Whether you are very familiar with these two artists or have never heard either one, you will delight in this musical collaboration. Only a guitarist of Christopher Parkening's stature could be the ideal accompaniment to the perfection of Kathleen Battle's voice. The music ranges from selections by John Dowland to American spirituals, Bach/Gounod, Villa-Lobos, Granados and some Spanish folk songs. The result is a coherent, soothing and utterly delightful listening experience. You will revisit this album often, and always be glad that you have it. For fans of Kathleen Battle and Christopher Parkening, I think it is a must.

We always enjoyed seeing and hearing Battle in concerts, usually on the television and Parkening has been a favorite guitarist. To listen to these two fine artists in concert is a real treat.

Superb technique, emotionally flat, but enjoyable even so........2005-05-25

I can't imagine these songs being performed with any greater technical brilliance than they are by Parkening and Battle on this CD. Both are virtuosos, him in the guitar, her the voice. Their skill is particularly apparent in the Dowland songs, the "Ave Maria", and the Bachianas brasileiras no. 5 (for me, the high point of the recording), which are all in a formal style well suited to the talents of the performers.

I compare the Brazilian songs to the version recorded by Salli Terri with Laurindo Almeida in the late '50's on "Duets with Spanish Guitar", which I have listened to repeatedly since I first heard it in 1959. Battle's phrasing, enunciation, and vocal skill are far superior to Terri's, but Terri brought a level of emotion to her singing that Battle seems to lack. Where Battle's perfection enhances her superb performances of the Dowland and Villa-Lobos pieces, it seems to detract from her performance of the Brazilian folk pieces.

I find this to be true again in the spirituals - vocal perfection and control detracting from the "soul" required to bring out the "spiritual" feeling. Imagine these same pieces sung by Mahalia Jackson or Aretha Franklin and you'll understand my point.

Parkening's performance has the same quality - technical virtuosity, especially noticeable in his lute-like technique in the Dowland solo - but lacking in emotional depth.

The classical selections are highly recommended, the folk pieces a bit disappointing, but overall an enjoyable recording.

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BATTLE ALBUMS, HER SWEET VOICE IS ACCOMPAINED BY THE GUITAR VIRTUOSO CHRISTOPHER PARKENING, TOGETHER CREATE A TENDER, DELIGHTFUL & BEAUTIFUL LISTENING EXPERIENCE. BACHIANAS BRASILEIRAS N- 5 HAS IT`S BEST PERFORMANCE IN THIS CD.

Fans, maybe, but I must say I'm not a huge fan of Kathleen Battle or opera or songs in different languages, either. My mom is, though. And through her I have heard Kathleen's best. And her very best (if you ask me) is one of the tracks ON THIS CD titled "Ain't that good news," even though it should be called "Ain'ta dat good news," since that is how its sung. It is a really good song (ask anybody) with a little surprise high-note at the end. If I were you I would (if not buy this CD right here and now) then go to [a book store] and see if their computers will let you hear "Ain't that good news" because that song is great.
