5 out of 5 stars Cajun swing meets Bob Wills........1999-08-07

Harry Choates is a little known American icon of music. His influence on western swing, as well as on later artists ranging from Clifton Chenier to Beausolil is evidenced on this and all cd's by this master cajun musical craftsman.

One will hear on this cd, some excellent examples of cajun fiddle music, as well as that style of swing that was popularized in the 40's by such musicians as Bob Wills and Choates himself. Harry supplies vocals on some numbers, most in the Cajun French dialect, some in English.

Treat yourself to this cd. This is a chance to hear real folk music being performed by a man who never owned a fiddle in his life, the one he performed with was one he "borrowed" when he was still a teenager in the back woods of Louisiana. Yet Choates weaves melodies with this instrument that are hauntingly beautiful and just downright fun.

5 out of 5 stars Jole Blon & Other Cajun Honky Tonk Songs by Allen Fontenot.......2003-10-23

As an avid fan of American folk music, I have enjoyed Cajun music for years. The qualities that I enjoy most are the sounds of "primitive" instruments and vocals, and original lyrics. Both are at their best with Fontenot and His Country Cajuns. The enthusiasm of their performance brings back memories of the front porch gathering of friends and their instruments of Friday nights long past for me.
My personal rating for this group and, I beleive, their only album, is that it is the equal of early Doug Kershaw and easily the better of the many artists of this genre today.

4 out of 5 stars Aaah-Hah!.......2006-12-17

I first learned about Jolie Blon from a novel by James Lee Burke, who rhapsodizes about this "Cajun National Anthem." I don't think I remember ever encountering a whole recording dedicated to one song, but this wonderful effort is just that. The first dozen on so cuts on the disk are various versions of the classic "Jolie Blon" -- both in Cajun French and English -- but the rest of the disk offers variations on the Jolie Blon theme, one or two of which are downright lousy. Thus, I personally liked the first half of the disk much better than the rest. The list of artists is intimidating and their various interpretations of the song fascinating. After a couple of plays, I can't get the darn song out of my head. And that's probably testimony to its artistic merit. Great disk.

5 out of 5 stars "Stand Up"...their playing JOLE Blon !.......2005-08-12

This is without a doubt one of the best CDs on the market today.I have been a huge fan of the song Jole Blon (this is just one of the many ways it is spellt)for over 40 years now. When I saw that Amazon was really offering a CD with all the different versions of this once popular Cajun hit I would of paid $100.00 for it. It would take all day to go through all the different Artists and exhort on how special each version of this song is and I'm not going to do that, instead I need to say that this famous song that is also known as the Cajun National Anthum that was co-written by Cleoma Falcon the wife of Joe Falcon who along with Cleoma were the first Cajuns to ever be recorded (I believe this was in 1928)on a record and had the very first Cajun Hit made this song possible.
Most of the old versions on this CD are "Outstanding". There are some newer versions by folks like Waylon Jennings that aren't bad but can't stand up to the likes of the Harry Choates or Moon Mulligan's version. By the way Moon has three different versions of Jole Blon on this CD and his song "Jole Blon is gone" is my faviorite.
Yes this is a true piece of Cajun Treasure. Not many tunes have been recorded to the extent of Jole Blon and even the Great Hank Snow gets into the act with his top hit "When Mexican Joe meets Jole Blon". Hats off again to the "Bear Family" for coming out with more music that most local USA Companys would never dream of spending their time and money to remaster and record.Of course most folks would never buy this type of music blend and many would concider it an embarassment to ever be caught listening to this so-called Coon-Ass style of music, the loss is all theirs as for me this CD has taken a place of honor in my Cajun & Zydeco extended collection. By the was if anyone does not know Jole Blon (Pretty Blonde, Cajun Angel) is a song about a guy who wants to know why she left and where has she gone and like in the Great version by Moon Mulligan he asks,"What have you Hillbillys done with my Pretty Little Blonde", and the rest is a big part of real Cajun History !
