The ill will that initially greeted Rattle and Hum--the follow-up to the band's massively successful Joshua Tree album--was due in large part to the bloated and self-important feature film that accompanied it, which showed the band as being simultaneously naive and pretentious as it "discovered" America. But as the film mercifully slips from memory, the music has remained, from the furious swirl of "Desire" and a clutch of live hits to insightful musical nods to heroes such as Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Billie Holiday. Songs like "When Love Comes to Town," a supercharged blues duet with B.B. King, suggests the quartet knew more about America from listening to its music than Phil Joanou's unintentional mockumentary suggested. --Daniel Durchholz

Am I Buggin' Ya? I Don't Mean to Bug Ya!.......2007-05-28
For a U2 album, this is alright. For any other group it would be tremendous. I think this is a 3 star album if not for the fantastic remake of Helter Skelter. In true dramatic fashion, Bono states that "this is a song that Charles Manson stole from the Beatles, we're stealing it back" and then the great cover of a lost classic begins. Some wonderful songs on this U2 offering, some not so good. Still a worthy part of any music collection.
the movie stunk buy the cd.......2007-04-04
many people forget that cover tunes have been done for years , in fact the stones use to mix at least 2 or more covers into many of the great albums they did , hendrix covered dylan , so whats the deal ???? this is a great car cd and shows a band at muscular best. if you are a real fan this a great cd, it is not one to start your u2 collection . howevwer once you really discover how great this band is this one cd that is a must .
Powerfull.......2007-03-25
This cd contains live versions of earlier tracks and new studio tracks.
It also contains new tracks but in their live versions.
I will not rate this cd songs by songs, I will only tell you that I just love this one and review some of them.
The voice of Bono in "Hawkmoon 269" is simply amazing.
I just love "Angel of Harlem", very good songs ! "Love rescue me" is highly emotionnal, "When love comes to town" is a very good blues track with B.B.King, "Heartland" and "God part II" are great and "All I want is you" is one of my favorite U2 songs. A must have cd.
Quality Music.......2007-01-05
As I write this review, I feel torn. On one hand, I think that this album has a lot of good songs: Desire, Angel of harlem, Heartland, Silver and Gold, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Pride, and Bullet The Blue Sky.
However, I sometimes think that Rattle and Hum cost U2 dearly. Since U2 did so many cover songs from rock legends like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Jimi Hendrix, many people perceived this album to be "self important" and "conceited." By covering those famous artists, it was like U2 were saying: "Look, we're in the same category as The Beatles or Bob Dylan.
Perhaps if U2 had not taken such a self indulgent approach to this album, people would like them even more than they already do...which is a lot really.
U2's "American record".......2006-11-14
U2's '88 double-album is packed with greatest hits, live recordings, cover songs & superstar collaborations. This heavily American-influenced epic has the band exploring everything from gospel to folk to industrial to the blues to, well, about everything but jazz. Some hi-lites include...
LOVE RESCUE ME: co-written by Bob Dylan, the man who encouraged U2 to discover and explore their musical roots in the first place. This hushed and heartfelt masterpiece contains some of the most brilliant and confessionary lyrics you'll ever hear. The only question is whether it's Bono or Bob doing the confessing.
HEARTLAND: Another gorgeous slow-burner, this one harkening back to their more ethereal Unforgettable Fire sound.
GOD PART II: The direct precursor to 1990's The Fly - ominous, scathing, and ultra-modern.
BULLET THE BLUE SKY (LIVE): Starring Bono's famous "Well, the God I believe in isn't short on cash...Mister!" speech. Another choice rant is captured in the live version of their great b-side, SILVER AND GOLD. "Am I buggin' you? Didn't mean to...bug ya. Edge, play the blues!!!"
ALL I WANT IS YOU: Strong contender for greatest U2 tormented-love-anthem, alongside whoppers like One, Stay, With or Without You & So Cruel. Also features what may be the single most emotionally charged electric guitar solo ever performed.
My only complaint is that they should have released it as two separate albums - one live and one studio. The mix makes for a somewhat disjointed listen, but the quality of the songs and performances is off the charts. Bono, especially, is at his peak on this album, belting out drop-dead brilliant lyrics with matchless enthusiasm and confidence.
RATTLE & HUM was maligned by hipsters when it came out, but it was - and still is - a genuine rock spectacle for the ages.

good 'ol days.......2007-03-06
This is one of those bands that will probably make me say: "man... they don't make music like this anymore" and I will officially be old. But that aside, this is one of my favorite albums ever. Downward is Heavenward is awesome too.
hum- perfect for anytime.......2006-08-21
This album along with "downward is heavenward" and failure's "fantastic planet" have been my favorite rock albums for years. This cd is one where you can listen to it for months straight, on repeat. My favorite tunes are "suicide machine" and "I hate it too" but when you're listening to the album in full it is hard to tell which ones are your favorites as it seems like one song which can not be serarated. I always get a little sad when the last song comes on, signaling the end of the journey. I think of this album as perfect to accompany a trip into space, dark fall nights, or sitting in the dark. But it also works for bright sunny days stuck in traffic. It can even calm you down when you're feeling stressed. I highly recommend this cd, as well as the others I mentioned above.
Gonna be a classic for me, great album!.......2006-07-20
I got this album back in about '95 after a bad incident. This guy I knew broke into a car and stole the radio and the CDs. He didn't like rock so he gave them to me. Among the CDs was You'd Prefer an Astronaut. I never heard of Hum but I grew attached to it and always remembered Little Dipper and how it sounded over the years, different from any other song out there. So I picked it back up a few years ago and "rediscovered" it again. It's now among one of my all-time favs now and has been for years. I hate to say it, but it never would have been if it weren't for that guy. My kids love it too and sing along with it, their fav is I Hate It Too, a great song. They always refer to it and beg me to play the "Never Gonna Get Me There" song. A couple years ago I listened to this album and their '98 album "Downward Is Heavenward" while cruising the hills in Austin, perfect album for cruising or chilling at home. It rocks yet can get dreamy too. I take Hum to all of my trips, while flying or sitting on a Cancun balcony. I get infatuated with it every year or so, it has a long shelf life. I kept it in my CD player for 2 months straight. I disliked the singer earlier on, but I eventually realized he's damn good and is a huge part of their sound. I'm a drummer and love how the drums cut through instead of being dull in the back. Love his snare sound! Bryan St. Pere isn't just a punk hitting on some skins, he's very musical. It's a shame they're not together anymore, I really would have liked to see them live. It's really cool to see them really get down musically instead of the usual filler [...] material on most CDs today. Every song is great(although I don't like The Very Old Man), you'll be singing along after a while. Check out their other album Downward is Heavenward, on par with this one!
great album.......2006-07-11
its a shame these guys arent together anymore. they got dropped from their label because the follow up to this one didnt sell very well...all that aside, this is one of the great rock alternative albums of the 1990s. Just about everyone has heard stars and can probably remember when it got some brief radio airplay, but that is just one piece of the puzzle. lyrically speaking, they never let you know exactly what they are talking about, but instead give the listener a chance to figure it out for themselves. The music is simply beautiful and it all pieces together very well. It is simplistic and lots of fun...for anyone who loved the alternative movement of the 90s but wants something different that is just as good if not better, then check this album out...
Music to live life by........2006-06-12
You've read the other reviews, it's not a coincedence that everyone calls this amazing, otherworldly, whatever. Find a comfy spot on the couch, close your eyes, listen to this music, and clear your mind. I'd consider this the ultimate chill-out CD, driving at night CD, reading during a stormy day CD, and just about everything else. My words aren't enough to describe it, just buy the CD, you won't regret it.

venusfan.......2007-02-22
I was a little worried after reading some of the other customer reviews of this album. I bought it and after listening several times, I am not disappointed. I did think songs 12 and 14 are weaker than the others. I get a little bored listening to them; the lyrics are repetative. Pink Champaigne is my favorite. I am a fan of experimental electronic music. This album incorporates multi-dimensional sounds with upbeat rhythms and Annette's voice is lovely. I am a huge fan of this band and they have not let me down yet. I am excited to see what they produce in the future.
A Little Weirder than Expected.......2007-01-10
We loved Venus Hum's previous albums. In this one, there's a few good songs, but the group got very experimental--to the extent that some of the songs are downright annoying. The vocals, however, are never annoying.
Venus Hum does it again!.......2007-01-09
I was a huge fan of Big Beautiful Sky, so I was excited to listen to this CD when I finally got it. In my opinion, The Colors In The Wheel is even better than Venus Hum's first CD!
While the "Untitled" songs are rather annoying, the real songs are fantastic. My favorites are "Do You Want To Fight Me" and "Yes And No", but really, it's hard to pick a favorite. All of the songs on this cd are so good.
Venus Hum's music is soothing, energizing, beautiful, and poetic all at the same time. Listen to the samples, and if you like them, you'll like listening to the real thing even more.
Too much layered sonic junk, not enough Annette.......2006-11-17
I really love Big Beautiful Sky and Songs for Superheroes, but this album really misses in the production department, and fails to draw the listener in. It's hard to listen to - challenging - almost tiring to consume. I couldn't figure it out until recently, and now it's obvious. It's all the extra sonic junk in the mixes, that aren't rhythmically or harmonically useful. There are just oodles of bleeps and bloops and filtered swooshes that are layered on every song, and they really detract from the groove and melody, burying Annette's vocals and making for basically a confusing electronic art-music experiment rather than a professional CD. I would totally buy a remix of this CD that simply omitted all the sonic junk and put the vocals front and center as found in the prior 2 CD's.
Note that this has nothing at all to do with the songwriting or performance quality - it's just a production botch that could be fixed in a single day. As it is I can't stand to listen to the songs because there's just too much crud going on.
Mood perpetuates mood.......2006-10-21
For their third full-length album, Venus Hum change their sound a bit. Rather than effervescent synthy pop, they try out a dreamier, "Colours in the Wheel" embraces a dreamy, swirling brand of electronica -- think Flaming Lips by way of Aphex Twin, with Imogen Heap doing the vocals.
The change is pretty obvious with the first song. "Mood perpetuates mood... tears perpetuate tears/one lie touches the other find..." Annette Strean croons softly over a guitar ballad, which is woven through with thin ribbons of synth. After a brief, surreal interlude, we're off into the album full-force.
Harder electronic songs have their presence -- the sultry, semisexual "Yes and No" with its urgent beats ("My no means no/my yes means yes..."), and the sinuous, ominous electroglitch dancepop of "Do You Want to Fight Me?" These are flanked by brief noodling interludes, and a few softer, sweeter little pop songs.
That changes with the exquisite "Genevieve's Wheel," where Strean murmurs over sparkling, soft-edged electronica about "all the colours in the wheel/the wheel, the wheel." At the halfway point, the album becomes experimental, without losing the catchy edge, up until the synth-lullaby finale, "Go To Sleep."
Venus Hum tries for an edgier sound in "Colours of the Wheel," and most of the time that's exactly what they get. Okay, "Pink Champagne" lumbers where the other songs dance, and the interludes aren't really necessary. But the majority of these songs are effervescent and creative, with a wider range than Venus Hum displayed before.
Their main instrument is keyboard, which Kip Kubin and Tony Miracle twist into every imaginable kind of sound -- sometimes soft and mellow, sometimes swirling and sparkling, and sometimes in sharp electronic jabs reminiscent of their last album. There's also a spattering of more down-to-earth instrumentation, such as the acoustic guitar in the opening song.
Annette Strean apparently developed vocal nodes a few years back, but her voice sounds just as good as ever -- strong and flexible, sort of like Imogen Heap's spacier little sister. The lyrics tend to be a bit on the simple side, with lines often repeated, but in Strean's voice they sound quite good.
Venus Hum have some uneven spots in "Colours in the Wheel," but the darker, more experimental, still entrancing music is definitely worth getting your hands on.
(Thank you, Rebecca!)

Album Description
On this recording, named for an easy-to-recite Buddhist chant that is the essence of the Buddha's heart, Buedi Siebert takes the path of peace to a specific place, as easy to visualize as a clear-air gust of wind high on a mountain in Tibet. Westerners seeking some basic knowledge of Buddhist philosophy will enjoy the simple but informative liner notes that explain the source of this soothing, ambient music that incorporates Siebert's lush, dreamy guitar lines and his mastery of numerous indigenous flutes. There are also soaring vocals by Dorothea Ferber and other chants by male voices. The short version of the title track opens the disc by creating an inviting and soul-lifting Asian atmosphere that is easy to hum along with. Some of the tunes just float sweetly along while others, like "The Lotus People," feature more jangly, percussive beats. On that particular tune, the mantra is reprised with a mix of voice and flute. Siebert lends an even truer air of authenticity with "Lotus Call, Pt. 2," which features authentic chanting Buddhist monks. At the very minimum, the listener will be transported into a very relaxing place. Hopefully, the complexities of the music beneath the basic "Om" will inspire deeper meditation and possibly study into the philosophy that inspired it.

It all sounds the same.......2006-08-21
Many of the tracks are exactly the same and even those that aren't are so similar that there is little variety in these offerings. These recordings are definitely oriental in style and since the tinny, twangy, and hollow sound doesn't really appeal to me, I just am not very excited about this CD. I will most likely be giving it away to someone who might enjoy this sound more.
simply beautiful!!.......2005-10-01
Even though a couple of the tracks are based on the same buddhist mantra (om mani padme hum);the mantra is so beautiful and calming and chanted wonderfully that you don't get bored. All the other tracks including the instrumentals are all great,ALLtogether wonderful for meditation, chanting and just simple lisening!!

Remy Zero has always displayed a keen understanding of rock's history, mining the sounds of '70s prog-rock, early '80s art pop, and the bombastic spirituality of U2 to create a unique sound. Unfortunately, previous efforts, while wonderful albums, suffered from an overabundance of ideas and a lack of editorial discretion. Often the band would try to fit an album's worth of ideas into a single song. The Golden Hum, Remy Zero's first release in three years, finds the band in control of its vision, reigning in its ambitions and creating an album of richly textured rock songs. While the band is often compared to R.E.M. and Radiohead, a more appropriate comparison would be David Bowie. Finding inspiration in the early hook-filled albums like Hunky Dory and the musical experimentation of the "Berlin" albums (Low, Lodger, and Heroes), Remy Zero has crafted an album that displays the best elements of glam-rock. Eschewing the feather boas and silly pretense that often passes for glam, The Golden Hum is filled with big riffs, subtle hooks, and soaring vocals. And like the best rock bands, Remy Zero revels in the music's contradictions: dark and uplifting, cynical and hopeful, The Golden Hum should certainly stand as one of 2001's best albums. --Adam Silverman

Golden Hum.......2006-09-23
Golden Hum is a perfect way to remind us of the loss that we all took when Remy Zero broke up. A great album from front to back, sure there's the songs we might not always remember but it's an album an entire work by these 5 talented artists. Be sure to check out their current projects.

what an underated group. I absolutely love save me. That is an incredible song. The rest is good too.
Hum-dee-dum!.......2005-09-28
First off, as odd as it will seem being from the band's hometown, I had never even heard of Remy, until I watched and got ultimately hooked on "Smallville" all the way back at the first episode. I think by the second ep, I ran out and did some research to find the theme song, and picked up a copy of "The Golden Hum". Several songs from this album were later featured on the show, but even the unrecognizable songs are pure "Golden". This is one of those rare CD's you search years for, that offers first to last track enjoyment, relaxation, emotional moments, memories, and...shall I go on? It's sad to see Remy go their separate ways, but the legends of their mark in music will live on. Go Remy!!! Thanks!

Big Beautiful Voice.......2006-06-04
I first heard Venus Hum on radioparadise.com, which has been a source of good music for me lately.
The singer has a great voice and very appealing attitude. You really should see their "Hummingbirds" video. She is awesome in it.
If you like singers like Cranberries, Vienna Teng you will definetely like this CD.
SLIGHTLY QUIRKY, COMPLETELY BEAUTIFUL.......2005-12-18
This is such a great album. Amazing vocalist, unusual yet very appealing voice. Very recognizable as well, I believe. I think that I have heard her vocals on a number of other non-Venus Hum songs, such as "Southern Sun" on Paul Oakenfold's album Bunkka (Am I right? I don't have the physical CD or insert/sleeve for Bunkka, I downloaded it from iTunes) The music on this album, Big Beautiful Sky, is itself equally dynamic and fantastic - also unusual, but accessible. The result? Perfectly matched vocals and music.
I have had this album for some time now, a few years maybe, and love to listen to it fairly regularly. The front half of the album is my favorite - Hummingbirds, Montana, Soul Sloshing, Lumberjacks and Beautiful Spain are my favorite tracks on this album, particularly Soul Sloshing - such a funky, odd, feel-great track. This CD is worth its bargain price for that one track alone. The rest of the album is great as well, a little more downtempo than the first half, but I find myself routinely gravitating to the songs listed above and tend to have those on repeat more often than those bringing up the rear.
Give this one a listen, then pick it up. Also check out their EP Songs for Superheroes, which is equally fantastic. I look forward to listening to, and purchasing, all of Venus Hum's future efforts.
One of the must-have albums of this century.......2005-09-16
Absolutely stunning! If you like ethereal female singers with really good near-operatic voices like Kate Bush, Lana Lane, Tarja Turunen of Nighwish... although my list might confuse you 'cause this is not pop-metal but rather trip-hop-dance-pop. Anyway, comparisons to Bjork are not very good, IMHO - this is not Bjork, not at all! - this stuff is really much more accessible and enjoyable.
Anyway, getting on with the review. What is amazing here is that almost every song (with only 1-2 exceptions) is really really good and very professionally produced. Hooks abound! Jumping, throbbing, trip-hoppy comtemporary dance-pop with simple lyrics which is ultimately hundred-percent redeemed by not only beautiful but oh so very sincere voice of Annette Strean.
Now for the songs. "Hummingbirds" was the first one I heard and it was simply love at first sight (no wonder that a snippet of it was used in a TV commercial). "Montana" is very good, although I liked some remixes of it more than the original. Then come "Soul Sloshing", "Beautiful Spain", "Wordless May" and "Bella Luna" - all first-class. Others are good but they are somewhat obscured by the hits - not to mention that some of them sound almost the same and this is something that guys from Venus Hum should think about when doing their next full-length record.
By the way, I am not sure why they have already released three EPs: "Hummingbirds" and new "Songs For Superheroes" and "Switched On Chrismas" but there is no new LP... what's up with that? some problems with their label, perhaps? Also, how on earth are people supposed to listen to these new songs if they are not even available anywhere? weird...
Anyway, as I said before, this is a record which is without any doubt, $15-worthy... I want to come up with a better sounding (or looking) term but am stumped for now. Go and buy it now!
Fill me up with sound.......2005-09-16
Good music is like a good book in that it has the power to sweep you away to another place. When I listen to Venus Hum I'm taken back to a place of innocence, happiness, sunshine, and unconcern. There is music I listen to when I want to be pouty, or angry, or serine; but I listen to this album when I want to feel joyful and lighthearted.
Yes, this album does have a spiritual undertone and she does mention Jesus in a song; being a not-so-religious person, this is a slight antipathy. However, I respect other people's beliefs and think it is beautiful when they can express them in a non-preachy way with alluring music; and Venus Hum does just that. In fact, the song that mentions Jesus, `Wordless May', is one of my favorite tracks. It's just a beautiful song.
Annette has such an amazing voice. She has passion mixed with innocence in her voice. The music just swirls into your ears and after a while you can't get it out of your head. You'll find yourself throughout the day humming the melody.
I actually just happened to come across them here on Amazon, and I'm very happy I did.
Somewhat Disappointed.......2005-09-04
Like a lot of people, I first heard of Venus Hum when Annette Strean (Venus Hum's lead singer) sang "Feel so good" on the Blue man group's "Complex rock tour" (a gread DVD). They announced her as Venus Hum. She rocked the house down and was the highlight of the show. So I figured that was the kind of music Venus Hum played. It's not. They're more like Techno-pop or something.
The first few songs are kind of catchy, hence the 2 stars; but it drops off quickly after that. Guess I should have listed to the short audio clips on Amazon first.

Great record.......2007-06-02
One of the few bands that never lost their "edge". Usually as bands age they write simpler, less interesting tunes that appeal to a broader audience. They also suck a lot more. Not so with Hum. The tracks on Downward is Heavenward boast a sophisticated ambience that satisfy not only the ears, but the imagination. I really like all 3 of their albums...but to me this one just stands out a little more. Not because its more polished, which it definitely is more "studio", but it paints an image better than the others. For the emo or space rock junkie - you won't be disappointed.
They should've been as huge as their sound..........2006-08-10
It took Hum two albums' worth of woodshedding and downplaying the influence of their Champaign, Illinois, scenemates Poster Children to reach the dense, cohesive fuzz-pop of 1995's masterful (if criminally underrated) "You'd Prefer an Astronaut." With "Downward is Heavenward," their second major-label album, Hum certainly haven't stopped moving forward, though they've taken a different route toward the same goal. They've asked the listener to follow, as well: "Downward"'s 10 tracks are loaded with nuances, many of which require several spins to make an impact. "Isle of the Cheetah" leads in with a skeletal cluster of effects-processed sounds; "Mrs. Lazarus" makes multitracked clean guitars as impenetrable as a wall of distortion; the minimal foundation of "The Inuit Promise" reveals interlocked riffs, buried organ melodies and intricate drum patterns. Throughout the album, acoustic-guitar tracks ride underneath layers of fuzzed-out riffs; voices speak over and harmonize with guitarist Matt Talbott's singing; huge dynamic shifts create Tectonic-plate-like movement. It's certainly a lot for four still-young musicians to manage, but as co-producers of the album (with Mark Rubel), Hum have fit excess into a complex framework that still manages to communicate something. The end result is a pop album -- a massive-sounding, distortion-drenched pop album, but one that's as easily hummable as it is memorable.
amazing.......2006-07-22
in my time I have heard people say that hum is similar to bands like Failure and Blinker the Star quite a bit. Okay, fair enough, but really they are in a league all of their own. While their music will most likely appeal to fans of those bands, hum owns a uniqueness that few have experienced but many come to love. Everything from the swelling guitar riffs to the soaring solos (if you can call them that, they usually have one guy soloing during the chorus, and the other is playing riffs), to the manic drumming, and the stuffy vocals set them apart from the mainstream. Its really too bad they didnt stick around, although it really wasnt their fault either. Downward is Heavenward starts out slow, with Isle of the Cheetah, Mat Talbot's nasal voice slicing through a lush guitar riff. It builds up slowly and gets heavier and heavier, until it fades off and gets light again. One would think this sets the mood for the album, but it really doesnt. Hum mixes in emo, pop, and rock in an amazing record. Highlights include If you are to Bloom, The Scientists, The Inuit Promise, and Green to Me. Check this one out if you havent already, I think that you will like it. Hum was a band with a lot of potential and a lot of talent. These four musicians blend together very very well, and it works extremely good. A musical masterpiece not to be missed.
They don't make albums like this anymore.......2006-03-17
A sonic (I hate to call it grunge) masterpiece by HUM, a Champaign band that performed their last gig on Dec 31st, 1999. Y2K did them in.
This album is on par with their also amazing "Electra 2000" CD, but is more refined, intricate, orchestrated, and poetic space rock. My faves are "Cheetah", "Dreamboat", "Green", and "Scientists", but the whole album is very strong and varies nicely in tone and tempo. Buy it, love it.
Lovers of HUM can find a strong follow-on work by a band called "Centaur", which features the lead-singer, song-writer, guitarist of HUM, Matt Talbott.
Musical Geniuses IGNORED.......2006-01-14
I have yet to find a reason why Hum is not more well known or popular (around Los Angeles at least). Sadly, Satan (the radio) mainly allowed only ONE track of Hum seep onto the radio waves and that song was "Stars" from their album "You'd Prefer An Astronaut". Any Hum fan could tell you that Stars was not their best song, maybe the catchiest, but not their most complex.
By first appearance the members don't look as intimidating as their music. Although love through a scientific microscope really isn't "intimidating" to many. Matt Talbott (vocalist) doesn't look like he could hurt a fly unless it slammed into his large bifocal lenses. The band itself doesn't resemble the cliché of "hardcore rock band". Maybe it has something to do with coming from Champagne, Illinois.
They push their instruments in all directions, from a hard ambient orchestra of grunge as in "Isle Of The Cheetah" or the tranquil yet distorted space rollercoaster of "Afternoon With The Axolotls", these 4 gentlemen could easily be mistaken for neo-grunge symphony composers. Though their intellectual aspect is seen not only through instruments but also through their lyrical sentiment. They combine love with science and astronomy and create a true uniqueness that defines Hum. I'm not going to sugar coat anymore explanatory definitions in reference to Hum, you can find an ultimate and passionate understanding here: [ http://www.h-u-m.net/bio/index.shtml ] (Oh and bookmark that site--it's amazing how much passion was devoted. Thanks Marijun!)
There may not be many fans out there, but I've noticed that the majority that are, are diehard. There has to be a reason for that impact. Maybe you should check it out and find out for yourself--then enlighten friends! After hearing an album, it shouldn't surprise you why 3/4 band members obtain their Master's Degrees. Yet, the only surprise that stands is the majority that are unaware of the brilliance that remains to echo here.
Maybe it's just that Hum is too deep for the common listener, whom prefers to swim comfortably at the surface rather than swim down into the unknown. After all, Downward is Heavenward. (Cheeeesy but true!)

Awesome CD.......2006-04-06
There are parts of this CD that qualify as the most moving music I've ever heard, specifically, parts of Track 2. You've probably got to love kirtan and Wah! to feel as enthusiastic as I do, but even if you're only curious and interested in learning more about this type of hindu/chanting/music, this is the one album I would recommend as a great first place to start.

Huge space rock........2006-03-17
The band that out rocked and out grunged Nirvana, HUM provides their first masterpiece (see Heavenward for their second masterpiece) and heaviest of their 3 available CD's.
Also, check out "Fillet Show" their first CD, independently released, if you can find it.
HUM is one of the most underappreciated bands of all time.......2005-12-12
I'd only heard bits and pieces of "Electra 2000" prior to buying it. When I found the reissue (which includes the bonus track, "Diffuse"), I was hooked from the very first time I listened to it. I'd already owned "You'd Prefer An Astronaut" and "Downward is Heavenward" for years, and both had always been on heavy rotation in my CD players, iPod, etc. "Electra 2000" joined that top tier of favorite albums the very day I bought it. Favorite tracks are "Pewter" and "Diffuse", though all are very good. Don't listen to anyone who gives this a bad review; of course it is not "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" or "Downward is Heavenward"... all three albums are different but with common threads among them, and all three are excellent. In my opinion, HUM never got nearly enough attention for their efforts; their work was amazing.
Electra 2000.......2005-02-24
Originally released in 1993, independently, before Hum was signed to a label, this album showcases Hum's unique and dynamic sound, while showcasing Matt Talbott's amazing writing and singing ability. A firm beginning to what Hum would become, the songwriting is pure bliss, although it does not appeal to me as much as Hum's other albums, this is still a great staring point for any Hum fan, just be forewarned that it is not as easy to find outside of the internet as Hum's other albums are. You might have to order it through books a million or something like that ( I did). Standout tracks are double dip, iron clad lou, and many others. Hum, however, has not developed their spacey sound, as exhibited on their amzing You'd Prefer an Astronaut, but the lyrics are still pretty out there, well done overall though. Still deserves 5 stars in my book as Hum is one of those bands that CAN NOT be missed out on. Currently trying to find Glifted, National Skyline, and Castor, a couple other bands that fit into this type of sound, and some are off shoots of Hum, having members from this group, as well as others too.
if you'r faint of heart -DUCK-this came from th underground.......2004-10-29
Yes production values are not 2004 Major label, they are 1992 Martian Go Home Indie label from Urbana, Ill. When this record came out, the sound was comparable to other bands emerging from this underground. Indeed, the Noise movement was burgeoning in the midwest right then, many wanted an Albini sound (very analog). As a radio programmer then i found the writing and chunk values high on WINDER and Iron Clad Lou.
Lo these 12 years later we can laugh at the quaintness of the understated vocal approach. I met these guys, and it is no act- they are really meek guys, but their sound would kick you in the chest. Also, remember, THIS IS THE RECORD THAT GOT THEM THE MAJOR LABEL DEAL- so I guess the negative reviewers should second guess the execs.
Any fair analysis should include or atleast account for context. Basic, really.

Great band, weak album.......2004-08-27
This is NOT the best of HUM. Nowhere near it. If you're interested in melodic, well-crafted post-hardcore, buy "Downward is Heavenward" (HUM's most creative album) or "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" (the most catchy of their albums). This band will always lack on vocals, and sometimes their lyrics leave room for more, but the music makes it worth your listen. If you're looking for something to supplement your CD collection, instead of wasting your money on HUM's "Electra 2000", try Castor's "Tracking Sounds Only".

Man C'mon. This is ridiculous!!!!.......2007-06-12
I can't believe what I'm hearing. The essence of Hip-Hop still exists, and it's a beautiful thing. I would recommend this for meditation (yes, meditation), just chillin' at home, the drive home from work, date music, you name it. The tributes are the best to me, and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because there is one song I just don't care for. I promise that if you are a 30-something that grew up listening to real hip hop (Not the crap that they are playing nowadays), you will not waste your money.
