Of all Hollywood's 'singing cowboys', Tex Ritter, with his tack-plain but sincere bass, sounded most like the genuine article. This 28-track overview of his Capitol recordings spans 1942 to 1957 and a variety of production approaches from the folk spareness of Rye Whiskey in 1946 to the Baroque Western ripeness of Gunsmoke in 1955. On many of his Capitol sides, Tex was supported by such ace Capitol country accompanists as steel guitarist Speedy West and guitar legend Merle Travis. The set opens with High Noon recorded and released in England, and ends with Capitol's 'country' version. Other tracks include I Got Spurs To Jingle Jangle Jingle, Goodbye My Little Cherokee, The Chisolm Trail, Cattle Call, Remember The Alamo, The Night Herding Song and Blood On The Saddle.

Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. More expensive than the other Essential but worth it........2007-04-22

This is an excellent set of music of Dimitri Tiomkin's music! The 4th disc is short (at just over 30 minutes), but thats because it is just the vocal versions of tracks which appeared in instrumental form throughout the first 3 discs. Whenever you buy a silva screen compilation, the first thing you ask yourself is 'when were these recordings made' and 'do I have these tracks on other compilations? Thankfully, this set has TONS of new recordings, but there is some recycled stuff and they are as follows:

Dial M For Murder is from the 1993 History of Hitchcock Vol. I, while Strangers on a Train is from 1995's History of Hitchcock Vol. II.

Three tracks originate from 1994's "Music From the Films Of John Wayne". They are "The High and the Mighty", "The Alamo - Overture" and "The Alamo - Green Leaves of Summer".

Red River is from 1996's "How The West Was Won: Classic Western Film Scores Vol. One".

The Thing From Another World suite is from the excelllent 1998 set "Alien Invasion: Space And Beyond II"

Many tracks first appeared on "Way Out West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection Vol. Two". They are: "Duel In The Sun", "The Alamo (Davy Crockett)", "Friendly Persuasion", "Giant (Main Theme)", "Gunfight at the OK Corral", "High Noon", "Rio Bravo", and "The Unforgiven (The Need For Love)".

The rest of the tracks are brand spankin new, and most are not available on other discs, so snag this one up in a hurry!

Excellent compilation of an important composer........2004-07-16

This long overdue collection of Tiomkin standards and rarities is a must for any fan of symphonic music; albeit, for film or concert hall. As the liner notes clarify; these recordings are a real labor of love for James Fitzpatrick and the Silva Screen team. Tiomkin is; undoubtedly, one of the most difficult of composers to replicate. This recording comes extremely close to "hitting the nail on the head" particularly with tracks such as: "Across the Texas Panhandle" from the Unforgiven, The Entr'acte from Duel in the Sun, The Guns of Navarone, The War Wagon, and the main title and Jett Rink theme from Giant. This recording is a bargain, particularly for collectors who have sought after many of Tiomkin's composer conducted soundtracks (which are getting harder and harder to obtain). Listeners who enjoy this set should consider seeking out previous cd releases of the soundtracks to "The Guns of Navarone" (SONY, Varese Sarabande), "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (Varese Sarabande, PEG), "55 Days at Peking" (Varese Sarabande), and "The Alamo" :original soundtrack (still available on SONY-Legacy).

Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, Russia [1894-1979] attended and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy[studied under the famed composer Glazunov] ~ had a degree in music as well as law ~ came to America in 1925, shown great interest for Native American music early in his film career.

Second disc contains The Epics ~ "LAND OF THE PHARAOHS" (1955) (Jack Hawkins as Pharaoh Cheops and a beautiful Joan Collins as his scheming wife), "55 DAYS AT PEKING" (1963) (Charlton Heston, David Niven and Ava Gardner is the all star cast), "THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE" (1964) (featuring Alec Guinness as emperor Marcus Aurelius), "CIRCUS WORLD" (1964) (John Wayne, Claudia Cardinale and Rita Hayworth under the big top) ~ next we Hitchcock Thrillers with "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" (1951) (a masterpiece film featuring Robert Walker and Farley Granger are both very convincing as we learn, never talked to strangers on a train or anywhere), "DIAL M FOR MURDER" (1954) (tense moments come from Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings - they don't get any better than this) ~ finally Drama and High Adventure with "HIGH AND MIGHTY" (1954) (another outstanding performance by John Wayne, as the co-pilot of an airline whistling the haunting theme), "GIANT" (1956)(another big epic film with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Chill Wills show us what it's like to be a Texan, with oil and money), "WILD IS THE WIND" (1957) (Anthony Quinn, Anna Magnani and Anthony Franciosa), "THE GUNS OF NAVARONE" (1961) (World War II film featuring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven and Stanley Baker on a small Greek Island trying to outwit the Germans and a very big gun) ~ some of Tiomkin's most inspiring themes rise to the surface.

On disc three ~ as we continue with Drama and High Adventures "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (1946) (James Stewart, Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Ward Bond with wholesome warm and endearing themes from our favorite composer), "TARZAN AND THE MERMAIDS" (1948) (in his 12th film as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller still had what it takes to swim and defeat the man-god Balu - Weissmuller and Tiomkin the perfect combination for this Tarzan adventure), "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" (1950) (Jose Ferrer stars as Edmond Rostand's famous swordsman with a even more famous nose), "THE WELL" (1951) (intense cues give the film musical triumphs in final scenes), "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" (1951) (exciting Howard Hawks film with a score to match), "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" (1956) (director William Wyler shows the life and times of a Quaker family played by Gary Cooper, Dorothy Mcguire and Anthony Perkins during the American Civil War, very touching), "THE ALAMO" (1960) (big budget epic western with Big John Wayne it's producer, director and star as Davy Crockett with a haunting and never to be forgotten "The Green Leaves of Summer"), "TOWN WITHOUT PITY" (1961) (Kirk Douglas in a post-war Germany story, blends jazz themes with Tiomkin signature arrangements) ~ Tiomkin always made the difference when it came to scoring a film.

When listening to the music of a film, you had the feeling of the storyline, characters and convictions of the whole picture, they'll never be another to come this way again ~ Silva America has outdone themselves on this one, it is definitely a five star film score box set...gotta love it!

The Greatest Western Themes.......2007-04-01

Great songs, I always loved cowboys shows and this just makes you remember them.

Great Stuff...Just, Not Enough.......2006-03-17

Well, I not only love films from the Western genre, but I also love the music that goes along with it. Morricone,Tiomkin, Bernstein,Rose...if you are also a lover of the themes and songs from the great Westerns, you know you could hardly go wrong when all those names turn up on the same album. "The Greatest Western Themes" performed by The Ghost Rider Orchestra includes all those guys mentioned above on this album. And not only that, but the renditions and performance is terrific. The sound quality of this little album is also very good. The only problem is there's just not enough!

There are 10 tracks of mostly instrumental great stuff.(okay, 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is not entirely instrumental, but who has ever understood the words anyway?).
Opening with the Theme from "The Magnificent 7"(Bernstein), right away it gets you in that Western mood. Three great from Morricone include, "For A Few Dollars More",G,B&U, and a real treat for spaghetti Western lovers, "Once Upon A Time In The West". A rousing rendition of "Bonanza" will make you want to saddle up with 'Pa' and the boys, and a sweet sounding "Shenandoah", may bring a good nostalgic feeling. Also included is "Ghost Riders In The Sky", "Streets of Laredo", "High Chaparral" and the beautiful theme from "High Noon"(Do not forsake me...)

These are a pretty good selection and representation of the Western themes from films(and TV) we loved, but at only 25 minutes, it's just not enough. This album was originally produced in 1986(most recently 2004), so let's just stick with some that could have been added from before the original production. A few that come to mind are the sentimental Green Leaves of Summer" from John Wayne's "The Alamo",theme from "Red River", "Oh My Darling" from "My Darling Clementine" for Ford fans, and even along more recent lines, anything of Bob Dylan"s from Peckinpah's "Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid", would have been a nice addition as well.

So a short but sweet album for Western lovers. Might get the mood right for a Western style party or Bar-b-que, or nice to take you away for a little bit while stuck in traffic(those who live in So. Cal will know what I mean when I say..stuck on the 405 Freeway!)

Good film music should be seen and not heard--that is, it's usually there for background, to reinforce what you're seeing, not to draw attention to itself. So why listen to it? Often that's a mystery, but the items in this collection seem to have been selected because they are interesting music (Prokofiev, Copland, Bernstein) or because they are so familiar that they bring back memories of favorite movies (Laura, High Noon, Star Wars). Like much movie music, a lot of these items are sentimental and overblown, even the more famous ones. (Those famous screaming strings in Psycho can sound silly without the onscreen action.) But if you want one movie-music CD in your collection, this may be the one to have. --Leslie Gerber

Worth it for "Conquest" alone.......2005-09-12

The stirring martial music from the movie "Captain from Castille" ("Conquest") is on this album and so far as I know it's the only CD you'll find it on. But other tracks are great also, including the "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur," the theme from "The Magnificent Seven," and "The Imperial March" from Star Wars.

A GREAT COMPILATION!.......2005-06-05

I've come to appreciate soundtracks more and more. This compilation progresses chronologically through 60 years of film music, starting with 1939's "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood", and ending with "Titanic". It encompasses a huge range of styles. Along with the usual suspects - music from "Ben-Hur", "The Magnificent 7", "Star Wars", et al, there are a few real sleepers, like John Barry's medieval-flavored theme to "The Lion in Winter", or Leonard Roseman's lyrical "East of Eden". Blessedly, most of the tracks are original recordings, conducted by the composers, among them Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. Only those of us burned by tinny, tacky, sacriligiously rearranged retreads on obscure labels can appreciate this.

There are a few notable omissions. The prolific Randy Newman isn't represented, though Uncle Alfred is. And NO Ennio Morricone? - incredible! Presumably, this has more to do with Sony's current copyrights and contracts than the relative merits of the composers. And it's fine to have John Williams included twice, but why two pieces from "Star Wars"? Why not the theme from "Jaws", for instance? Or "Sugarland Express", for a really unexpected treat? But these are minor quibbles. And for whatever it's lacking, there's no fluff substituted. This is real music from fine craftsmen, which sometimes attains art. A great intro to the form, and wonderful just to listen to. I bought it used - one of my best deals ever!

So So Compilation.......2002-01-14

My major interest in this CD was in the selection entitled "Robin Hood And His Merry Men" (duration: 4 min, 28 sec), conducted by John Williams, and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It turns out that this is a re-issue of the track from Sony Classical SK 62788, 1997. Surprisingly, this performance is poky, ponderous, and prodding. The conducting is, well, somnambulistic. Miking/mixing/processing yields a sonic brick deficient in instrumental nuances while sounding like way too many musicians were shoe horned into the recording studio. As for the rest of the tracks, it's hard to believe, but Silva America offers better compilations! Best to skip this one.

Deserves more than five stars.......2000-06-23

I have several discs of film music, and this one if by far the best. As one of the previous reviewers noted, there are many peices absent that could have been included here, but I don't see how anyone could be completely satisfied with any compilation that fit on just one disc.

The performances here are crisp and clear, and include a good selection of both old and new, ranging from traditional film favorites like the Star Wars theme, to less common selections like the screeching strings from Psycho (at least, I think they're less common, but I could be wrong). And I could listen to the Magnificent Seven theme over and over.

Anyway, this is a great disc for almost anyone. If you're looking for one thing in particular, find that film's soundtrack, but otherwise, this is a fantastic disc, and one of my favorites!

Music In Film (NPR Milestones of the Millennium.......2000-05-02

Great CD;the music is crystal clear with an excellent variety demonstrating the wide variety of musical talents in Hollywood. Liner notes are also most interesting, explaining some of the history behind the cuts and pointing out differences in the composers styles...as with John Barry. His style ranges from "the Lion in Winter" bold dramatic soundtrack to the exquisitley tender "Dances with Wolves" theme music. A CD to enjoy over and over

Album Description

Of all Hollywood's 'singing cowboys', Tex Ritter, with his tack-plain but sincere bass, sounded most like the genuine article. This 28-track overview of his Capitol recordings spans 1942 to 1957 and a variety of production approaches from the folk spareness of Rye Whiskey in 1946 to the Baroque Western ripeness of Gunsmoke in 1955. On many of his Capitol sides, Tex was supported by such ace Capitol country accompanists as steel guitarist Speedy West and guitar legend Merle Travis. The set opens with High Noon recorded and released in England, and ends with Capitol's 'country' version. Other tracks include I Got Spurs To Jingle Jangle Jingle, Goodbye My Little Cherokee, The Chisolm Trail, Cattle Call, Remember The Alamo, The Night Herding Song and Blood On The Saddle.

GO FETCH. It is the best ever collection of Tex Ritter music that I have. It shows how wonderful of a talent he is. From his cowboy style of music to his bluesy style and all other areas of music. Must have.

Get Along! Great CD.......2003-09-23

I picked this up wanting the theme song to High Noon and got a lot more than I bargained for. Although neither of the two versions of High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me O My Darling) presented here are the definitive track from the film (a couple verses are missing), the theme songs to The Searchers and Gunsmoke are here, along with some great pop western tracks (Boogie Woogie Cowboy, The Wayward Wind, Goodbye My Little Cherokee, and I Got Spurs [that] Jingle Jangle Jingle). There are a lot of ballads here, at least one of which (Rye Whiskey, or Jack Of Diamonds, as I've sometimes heard it called) is an authentic Old West tune. There are a couple surprises here too - Buffalo Dream is an emotional (and historically accurate) rendering of the rise of the Ghost Dance religion and massacre of the Sioux at Wounded Knee. Blood On The Saddle is an eerie tune about a cowboy dead in the saddle, and Remember The Alamo is a great soul stirrer (so long as you're an Anglo Texan). Great ballads, too. Brave Man sounds like a coda written by Marshall Dillon, John Wayne, and The Lone Ranger. Good stuff here, with very few turkeys (I didn't care for Trooper Hook) and some fine liner notes following the career of this western legend - the father of the late John `Come and Knock On My Door' Ritter.

Traditional Country Music.......2001-10-16

It is really good to get back to real traditional country music. I intend to buy more.

Not the Original Soundtrack!.......2000-04-19

I really like the cd, but the two High Noons are not the original soundtrack recording. I have not been able to find the original, except recording it off the original motion picture. The same goes for the song "Wichita." All in all a very good cd. I recommend it.

Typical Bear Family excellence.......2000-04-18

If you're looking for a single-disc Tex Ritter collection, this is the one to choose. At 28 tracks, it is a fairly comprehensive look back at Ritter's career, and--as you can see from the track listing--it has just about all the major western songs. Sound quality is great, and the disc contains informative liner notes that include a brief bio and complete session information. In all, this is the best way to get Ritter's music barring a purchase of Blood on the Saddle, the Bear Family box set.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra never ceased to amaze me with their vibrant and versatility in intrepreting the instrumental versions of the classics..I like the classic Clint Eastwood western "fistful of dollars"...melodic sounds of "never on sunday" and don't forget the really western classics of them all.."high noon" (do not forsake me)...very very nice.buy one today.
