At his best, as exemplified by his 1999 megahit "How Do You Like Me Now?!" Keith is simple and direct in the tradition of Hank Williams Jr.--aware of his limitations, able to thrive within them. "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" struck a chord, though it differed little from the fist-shaking morale-boosters of previous wars. On the downside, Keith's formulaic tendencies can become tiresome, as it did on "My List," a generic celebration of life's mundane treasures. Sales notwithstanding, "Beer for My Horses" was no artistic landmark for Keith or duet partner Willie Nelson. By contrast, he and daughter Krystal have fun with the 1963 Inez and Charlie Foxx R&B hit "Mockingbird" (first revived by James Taylor and Carly Simon). "Go With Her" injects a different spin into the time-honored breakup song, wittiness absent on the gimmicky "Stays in Mexico." Raucous live performances of "You Ain't Much Fun" and his debut hit, "Should've Been a Cowboy," reflect his ability to rouse the faithful into the obligatory singalong. --Rich KienzleCustomer Reviews:

As a survey of Toby Keith's first four recordings (not including the seasonal Christmas to Christmas), this set turns in some strong singles, making the case for the Okie singer-songwriter as one of the more traditionally minded of the '90s hat acts. Keith rarely devastates as a singer, but he never overreaches, and there's more than a bit of grit in his delivery of "Should've Been a Cowboy" and "He Ain't Worth Missing." His emotional triumph remains the obsessive "Who's That Man," in which Keith sees another man living the life he threw away. Keith also includes two songs not available elsewhere, complementing an appealing mainstream country set. --Roy KastenCustomer Reviews:

While Louisiana Hayride star Johnny Horton's 1956 Top 10 debut "Honky Tonk Man" strode the line between rockabilly and honky-tonk minimalism, he found his niche in 1959 with a short-lived phenomenon known as the saga song: newly penned tunes, based on or inspired by historical events. The song that rendered Horton immortal? A rousing rendition of folksinger Jimmie Driftwood's War of 1812 number "The Battle of New Orleans," which topped both the country and pop charts for weeks. Riding a winner, Horton kept the momentum going with the Civil War-themed "Johnny Reb," and "Sink the Bismarck," based on a World War II naval battle. He died in a Texas car crash in early November 1960, days before his next single, "North to Alaska" (from the John Wayne film of the same name), hit the charts. While saga tunes understandably dominate this collection, it also includes "Honky Tonk Man" and the ballads "Whispering Pines" and "The Mansion You Stole." There's no better introduction to Horton's seminal recordings. --Rich KienzleCustomer Reviews:

Hank 101. Country 101. After 27 years in print as 24 Greatest Hits, Mercury kindly reduced it to 20 Greatest Hits. It's still excellent value, and it's still sobering to realize that Hank recorded just 66 songs during his lifetime, almost all of them essential. Here are those that serve as a working definition of country music, and as an admonition to artists who try to get too wordy or try to lose themselves in minor keys. "Your Cheatin' Heart," "Honky-Tonk Blues," "Cold, Cold Heart," "Lovesick Blues," "You Win Again," "I Can't Help It," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," and the rest. Fifty years later, they still have the power to move, and the power to shape modern country music. --Colin EscottCustomer Reviews:

Great Songs, Just As You Remember Them!.......2007-05-30
This album of Roger Miller's best songs sound as great today as they did back in the 1960s. I've had "King of the Road" stuck in my head for days, thanks to this album. I also love the aw-shucks sound of "Dang Me", "Chug A Lug" and "Do Wacka Do". My kids loved listening to "You Can't Roller Skate In a Buffalo Herd" until I actually refused to play it again.
Not all Miller's songs are funny or nonsensical, though. He sings about heartbreak and true love in "In the Summertime" and "Little Green Apples". He also does an impressive version of "Me and Bobby McGee".
In all, there are 20 classic Roger Miller songs on this album. There's also a great CD insert telling about Miller's life and his untimely death from throat cancer. I was surprised to read that Miller wrote most of his own songs, and that he was a gifted fiddle player and guitarist. So take a walk down memory lane - anyone who grew up in the 60s will remember these songs! And it's great that his albums can entertain another generation.

in Europe we don't have country radio stations to listen to, the
only way to hear country is buying CD's from the States something
I'm doing since the past 18 months. These mostly are from the
70's and 80's and I am so happy to re-discover all those artists
I used to listen to during my many business trips through the USA
and whose LP's I always brought back after each trip. Now I am
recuperating them on CD and buying many I didn't have then or
didn't even know the existence of. This is the case with Gene
Watson. Last month I received "Ultimate Collection" and gave it
5 stars. Gee, how I love his music. I would have liked to give
these "18 greatest hits" 5 stars as well but again I received a
CD with zero information. Who wrote these songs? When were they
recorded? Does the record company release them this way to cut
down prices? What a shame.

Best Single Disc of Tammy's Solo Hits, But Far From Complete.......2003-07-25
This collection - the strongest single Wynette disc available - contains twenty of her best solo singles - including all of those mentioned above - released between 1966 (her debut "Apartment # 9") and 1978 (the defiant "Womanhood"), the lone major omission from this period being her spinetingling "Another Lonely Song." Thus, none of her celebrated collaborations with George Jones (get their collection 16 Biggest Hits) or even David Houston (on "My Elusive Dreams") are found here, nor such latterday solo toe-tappers as 1979's "They Call It Making Love" and 1982's "Another Chance." Until an expanded single disc of Tammy's best comes along, the only place to get all of these recordings in one place is her box set Tears of Fire (which contains a lot of filler).

In the late 1980s, John Anderson found himself in the awkward position of seeing the country charts dominated by the new traditionalism, and yet he couldn't buy a hit. Anderson refused to give in, however, and he signed with the fifth company of his career, a brand new label called BNA, and threw the dice one more time. His gratifyingly successful years there have been summed up on Greatest Hits. As good as the songs are, what really makes these hits great is the combination of Anderson's rich, pure-country, baritone drawl, and the pumping swamp rhythms he adds to all his uptempo numbers. Only a handful of country stars could round 15 songs from 1992-96 as impressive as these. Unfortunately, BNA includes his remake of "Swingin'," which sounds busy and less focused than the Warner Bros. original. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

C'mon folks, how about someone putting together the real thing, a full compilation of great music from at least 5 different labels? It can be done, and John Anderson deserves it!
This one gives you a wonderful 'taste' of John's talent, but it leaves out at least half of his career thus far!
In my opinion you wouild do better with a copy, new or used, of the 'Anthology' CD, and as noted, that too leaves much to be desired. Let's hope that someone gets it right soon...

John's early classic hits.......2005-08-08
With a voice and musical style that has echoes of, but which is distinct from, Merle Haggard, John Anderson burst on to the country music scene in 1980. He was a regular country hit-maker for much of the eighties but faded towards the end of that decade. He made a successful comeback on a different record label in the nineties.
I quickly became a huge fan of John's music. His debut album was a classic, featuring songs such as 1959, She just started liking cheating songs and (best of all) Your lying blue eyes. All of them became top twenty hits in the country charts. Bigger hits came later including some on this collection but those first three hits are (to my ears) as good as anything else that he ever recorded.
Among those bigger hits are Swinging (the biggest hit John ever had - it crossed over to the American pop charts), I'm just an old chunk of coal, Would you catch a falling star and Black sheep. Later eighties hits can be found on volume 2.
If you love the music of Merle Haggard and George Jones, you'll surely enjoy listening to John Anderson. And if you only buy one collection of John's music, the original Greatest Hits - the one on Warner - is the one to go for until and unless a more comprehensive collection appears. If you enjoy this collection and want to hear more, go for volume 2 or the BNA collection or both.

With a legend like Hank, than man who largely dragged country music into the modern age, the question is how do you pick just 40 of his songs? There were the immediately obvious biggies like "Hey Good Lookin'," "Jambalaya," and "Move It On Over," but almost everything was a gem in one way or another. Whether this collection is the greatest hits or not will depend on the listener, but for anyone with even the slightest curiosity about country music, it's essential listening. Hank was a landmark of the genre, and to hear him is to understand how country could change from rural to urban. Essential listening for everyone. --Chris NicksonCustomer Reviews:

Hank Williams meteoric rise to stardom began in Montgomery, Alabama as a high school student in the late 1930's. Known as "The Singing Kid" Hank hosted his very own radio show on radio station WSFA. Before long he would put together a backup band known as the Drifting Cowboys and the group began showing up in roadhouses, auditoriums and juke joints all over the region. From a very early age it was quite apparent that this young man had an awful lot of talent. However, Hank Williams' personal life was a mess. His father Lon virtually abandoned the family when Hank was very young. Hank's mom was extremely overbearing and by the age of 11 or 12 Hank had developed a taste for liquor. The scourge of alcoholism would plague him for the rest of his days. He would marry Audrey in 1944 and in many ways the marriage would become yet another source of unhappiness in young Hank's life. But in spite of it all this extremely gifted singer-songwriter was bound and determined to make his mark in country music.
The man who would come to be known as "the father of country music" signed on with the fledgling M-G-M label in 1947. After a couple of near misses "Lovesick Blues" was the surprise hit of 1949. Despite objections from all of his handlers Hank insisted on releasing it as a single. He obviously knew what he was doing because the song spent an amazing 16 weeks at the top of the country charts. The monumental success of "Lovesick Blues" would earn Hank a spot on the brand new radio program "Louisiana Hayride". Could the Grand Ole Opry be far behind? Later on in 1949 Hank would have two more huge hits with "Wedding Bells" and "Mind Your Own Business". Now there was just no question about it. Hank Williams was invited to join the Grand Old Opry. Hank Williams was now more popular than ever. He seemed to strike a chord with the record buying public. And the hits just kept on coming. In spite of the overwhelming personal problems that would eventually cost him his health, his marriage and his spot on the Opry, Hank would remain a fixture on the country charts with fabulous tunes like "Cold Cold Heart", "Long Gone Lonesome Blues" and of course "Your Cheatin' Heart". You could hear all of that pain in his voice. During his relatively brief recording career Hank Williams would record just 66 sides. He wrote 50 of them. Unfortunately the life of Hank Williams was all too brief. He passed away in the back seat of a car on New Years Day 1953 at the age of 29.
"Hank Williams: 40 Greatest Hits" is a celebration of the music of this true American original. His lyrics will move you and his vocals will haunt you. Listen carefully to these tunes and you will come to appreciate what a truly remarkable talent this man was. These are all the original M-G-M studio recordings. Beware of some collections that include some inferior "live" recordings. For my money, "40 Greatest Hits" remains to this day the finest Hank Williams collection ever issued. Highly recommended!!!
Care about country? This should be in your collection.......2005-06-29

Johnny Cash once called him "my favorite songwriter," and Waylon Jennings recorded nearly an entire album (Honky Tonk Heroes) of his material in 1973--lots of folks insist that was the first true "outlaw" record. Billy Joe Shaver, whose "Old Chunk of Coal," "Georgia on a Fast Train," and "Old Five and Dimers" rank as standards of Texas singer-songwriter lore, is closer to his 70th birthday than his 60th, but he still burns it down on stage, and he still lives the soulful, close-to-the-bone life of his impoverished, raggedy-ass youth. These days, it would be easy for the five-time Grammy nominee to lean on his woeful personal story--growing up picking cotton and dropping out of school in the eighth grade, then losing his wife, mother, and guitarist son, Eddy, in a matter of months at the turn of the millennium. Instead, he continues to challenge himself in his writing. This collection of his best-loved songs (it's erroneous to call them "hits") contains a driving live rendition of "Georgia" and two new offerings (the remarkable love song "Light a Candle for Me" and the tongue-in-cheek "Melody") as well as some lubricated on-stage preaching and storytelling. (It also reprises his unfortunate duet with Big & Rich on "Live Forever"... but let's pretend that never happened.) Shaver's singing remains an acquired taste, rivaling a rusty barn-door latch rattling in the wind. Yet in the age of Pro-Tooled prettiness, authenticity never sounded more welcome. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:
Original Mind.......2007-05-25
One of the greatest songwriters. Ever........2007-04-13
Shaver's songs range from the patriotic enthusiasm of "Good Ol USA," to the whistfulness of "Melody," to the raucous delight of "Honk Tonk Heroes," to the beautifully poignant of "When Fallen Angels Fly." On the rowdy "Georgia on a Fast Train," he proudly sings of his eighth grade education; he may be sending the wrong message to the youth of today, but let's face it, we don't give a good god-darn. He's an old chunk of coal, who will one day be a diamond; he praises the hottest girl in town, who used to hang around with Heaven 'til she learned too much; he's tempted by a rose of a different name; he's an old five and dimer and still dang-proud of it. But, truthfully, we can sum up Billy Joe Shaver with one simple paraphrase of one of his most elegant songs: like the greatest that humanity has to offer, Billy Joe Shaver is gonna live forever.
