Days Gone By

Between the traditional honky-tonk of Randy Travis and the raucous country-rock of Travis Tritt lies a middle ground of country-pop. At its worst, this is sentimental, easy-listening music--it's as if Barry Manilow had added a steel guitar. At its best, though, as in the hands of a Rodney Crowell or a Kathy Mattea, country-pop marries the storytelling craft of Nashville with the harmonic sophistication of the Beatles. Crowell is the obvious model on Days Gone By, James House's third attempt to make the transition from songwriter to artist. He doesn't quite rise to Crowell's high standards, but House comes close enough to make this a thoroughly enjoyable example of commercial country-pop. Like Crowell, House is a great admirer of Roy Orbison. The best song on House's new album, Little by Little, was obviously inspired by the operatic crooner in shades and it builds unstoppably from tentative efforts to forget an old lover to a big, climactic confession of undying love. Orbison's influence can also be heard in the brooding obsessions of such House compositions as "Silence Makes a Lonesome Sound" and "Until You Set Me Free." Producer Don Cook, who was never bashful about building a big wall of sound with the Mavericks or Brooks & Dunn, gives these songs the Orbison-like grandeur they require. No one would ever mistake House's voice for Orbison's, however. House does his songs justice with a solid tenor, but he has neither the powerful instrument nor the inimitable style that separate the special singers from the pack. Days Gone By is a useful showcase for a talented songwriter and a reliable performer, but songs like "Little by Little" and the title cut need someone like Raul Malo or Chris Isaak who can give these tunes the Orbison-like vocal they deserve. --Geoffrey Himes

On Sea Music, former Del Fuegos frontman turned kid's music songster Dan Zanes performs a set of old sea shanties in a rough-hewn but charming manner. He takes songs that have been worn smooth from constant use, artfully scuffs them up, and restores them to their former "ragged but right" glory. His performance of "Shenandoah," for example, features some fine Leadbelly-style 12-string guitar picking and an anguished vocal that almost erases the memory of the polite, formal choral arrangements that usually smother the song. And his "Sloop John B" sails along on jaunty banjos and mandolins rather than the slick harmonies of the Beach Boys' version. These shanties were originally created by sailors as work songs, and consequently they have choruses that are perfect for singing along. Zanes is joined on many tracks by an enthusiastic chorus of kids who are obviously having a wonderful time belting out the sometimes salty lyrics. As with all of Zanes's recordings for children, adults are likely to find themselves listening to this wonderful music even when the kids aren't underfoot. --Michael John Simmons

5 out of 5 stars On any list of great "kids" CDs you will love too........2007-03-28

My personal favorite of DZ's "kids" records.

This one *is* great for sing-alongs with the kids, but is a fine old timey record of sea songs that can be enjoyed by anyone. Loose-limbed versions of "Shenendoah", "Sloop John B" and "Cape Cod Girls" are fine and fun.

"Strike The Bell", "Blow Ye Winds", "Leaving of Liverpool" and others are fun sing-alongs as well as good history lessons. My 3.5 year-old and I enjoy this record equally.

It's particularly nice that Zanes' website has the lyrics AND chords -- really helps extend the listening and playing pleasure. I also appreciate that DZ doesn't dumb down the music for kids at all -- you get a real feel of the folk tradition of handmade music here.

5 out of 5 stars great for kids, great for adults!.......2007-02-27

for a fun cd of classic sea shanties, and a kids' cd that you won't get sick of, this is the one. we've given this to many kids (2 and up) and all parents have been very thankful! we've had it for 2 yrs. and we listen to it all the time.

5 out of 5 stars favorite.......2007-01-10

This cd stays in our car stereo for weeks and weeks. We sing a long and our 3 yr old likes it too.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-06-01

I like anything to do with the sea and I bought this CD on the strength of the glowing reviews. Having lived in a port city in England that hosts an annual Sea Shanty festival, I was fortunate to hear some of the best shanty singers around. I had high expectations for Dan Zales and was sorely let down. The music is basic and unpolished, which should be a good thing. Shanties are supposed to be raw, gutsy. But the quality of the music here is downright amateurish -- merely a sing-a-long with the children in the kitchen. I wanted more for my money.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for kids and adults.......2006-03-29

I played this CD in the car while taking my great granddaughter (8 mos) to work yesterday. The songs were so irresitable I found myself singing along, even with chanties I'd not heard before. Then, from the back seat, I heard loud cooing and chortling noises in a little voice. Morgan was singing along too. Guess this CD is a hit with everyone.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

When John Fahey recorded this album in 1967, he was at the peak of his considerable powers as a musician, writer, and composer. His fingerpicking is astounding; surely no stronger thumb ever struck a bass string than the one that drove "Night Train to Valhalla," no surer fingers ever plucked a melody than the ones that coaxed the epic sweep of "The Portland Cement Factory of Monolith, California" from six strands of steel and a wooden box with a hole in it. This album includes some of Fahey's best-loved tunes, including the aforementioned songs, the bluesy "Revolt of the Dyke Brigade" (Fahey was tweaking the sensitivities of folk music audiences before anyone knew what political incorrectness was), and the uncategorizable "Raga Called Pat." The latter isn't Indian music at all, but a sprawling two-part odyssey constructed from train whistles, bird calls, and dancing guitar figures. This well-mastered and lovingly packaged reissue includes two sets of liner notes; Fahey's originals are a hilariously obtuse parody of poetic, philosophical, and historical pretensions, while a new set by journalist and poet Monica Kendrick acknowledges his passing mere months before this record came out by paying homage to Fahey's enduring artistry. --Bill Meyer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2003-12-17

This is my favorite album of all time. I have never heard more beautiful or haunting music. I heard this album for the first time when I was five, and I must have heard it a thousand times since then, but it continues to be fascinating. My dad once said that this is the music you would hear after the world ended. And he's right. Fahey's music sounds organic, like it came from the earth, not from the hands or mind of a person.

5 out of 5 stars Fahey's best recording.......2003-12-15

I love this album. It is one of my favorite recordings of all time. When I had the lp, which I acquired from a little record store in Takoma Park two doors down from the gas station were Fahey used to pump gas as a teenager and sell his own pressed copies of his first recording, Blind Joe Death--I literally wore it out. By that time, his recordings were out of print, and I had to wait decades for a re-release on CD. Oh happy day! He achieved his creative zenith with this recording, and moved off in different directions, never as compelling as his earlier work. Night Train to Valhalla, The Portland Cement Factory, and others are so fully realized that it is as if he is speaking a long forgotten language, his guitar lines forming complete sentences. I last saw him perform in 1977, at the Cellar Door, and he came on stage wordlessly, sat, assumed a posture not unlike a Picasso painting, and played guitar for the next two hours without ever pausing or stopping. Hypnotic. Trance inducing. His Raga named Pat saga continues, as well. A fascinating concept to draw out a piece of music, like a Triptych, across many recordings. A must have. At the time this recording was released, one could never have imagined the sad manner in which his story would end.

5 out of 5 stars THIS is Fahey at his very best........2001-12-19

After having heard most every other Fahey recording out there, including the epic "America", "Volume IV", "The Voice of the Turtle", and his first record, I thought I had heard the very best of John Fahey's output. "Days Have Gone By", in my view, surpasses all of those, and it's Fahey's most personal and most beautiful work. This record, first issued on Takoma in 1967, is unique in Fahey's repetoire for its gorgeous use of reverb, as well as for the subtle harmonic details evoked from Fahey's guitar. On "Days Have Gone By", Fahey created a landscape of sounds simultaneously intimate and vast, incorporating at points train calls and various abstract sampled sounds (sort of akin to what he did on "Requia", but more understated), and at others dipping into the eastern-tinged playing more familiar to "Fare Forward Voyagers". At the bottom of all of this is, of course, Fahey's fantastic blend of classical technique and love of blues/folk/mountain music, played not so much with the pyrotechnical fervor that can be found on some of Fahey's recordings as with the subdued charm of a guitarist quietly possessed. This may be thought of as "otherworldly" music to some, but I think of "Days Have Gone By" as a kind of testament to the beauty and mystery of this life, and I'm delighted to see it's been reissued for everybody to experience.

4 out of 5 stars Last of the great Fahey 60's works - Fans will like it.......2001-08-22

Finally, the last of the great Fahey Takoma albums from the 60's has been released! (I can retire my old scratchy LP). Fahey fans will be astounded again by this very consistently good ablum. That having been said, be warned it is less folky and melodic and more experimental, in a gentle sense, than, say his "Dance of Death".

When John did this, he was deeply involved in the experimental music of the day (John Cage, Beatles etc). This one is highly listenable, standout "hits" - if that word can be used about Faheys recordings, are "The Revolt of the Dyke Brigade" - a slide guitar piece, one of his best, and the darkish expresssionist "Portland Cement Factory at Monolith".

The "Raga called Pat" is a precursor of New Age Music, nature sounds, recorded sometimes too close, for comedic effect, with guitar in the background. In the title track, Fahey plays while a group of drunks comment on the music.

And as a contrast - a hymn - followed by a two guitar version of the happy "My Grandfathers Clock" with Fahey's amazing patented clockwork thumb bass going in one direction while the melody, syncopated with the other fingers, hops all around the beat!

Enjoyable - finally available - Performance gets 4 1/2 stars, slightly murky recording gets 3, under my tough grading system. See my updated list of Fahey Favorites now that all the good stuff is available!

5 out of 5 stars Hard to find but worth it!!!!!!.......2003-10-13

I 1st found James House's Hard Times For an Honest Man cassette in a clearance bin at a record store in the Hutch Mall. I fell in love with his music & his melodic voice. He is such a wonderful singer and it's a heck of a shame that today's country stations don't play his music. He has such a way with music that really knocks me out. I was fortunate enough to find the Days Gone By CD on ebay along with one other one of his. Unfortunately, so far, I can't replace the Hard Times for an Honest Man tape that my ex stole. I know James wrote hits for others (i.e. Diamond Rio's In a Week or Two which I dearly loved & would've loved to have heard James sing). Damn shame he's not on the radio like he should be.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Pleasurable Listening Experience...Stellar!.......2002-09-14

James House must be one of the most talented men in the music industry. His touching lyrics and catchy melodies are exciting, inspiring and very easy on the ears. Of course, he's pretty easy on the eyes too. If every artist out there could take a moment to sit back and learn from this guy, we would all be hearing better, more beautiful music. He is stunning and deserves all success that comes his way- whether he is performing, writing or producing. Many thanks to James for touching my heart and inspiring me to go after my dream. Simply the best.

5 out of 5 stars Where did he go?.......2002-04-27

I BOUGHT THIS TAPE WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT AND JUST LOVED IT. IT WAS LATER STOLEN OUT OF MY CAR.i HAVE TRIED EVERYWHERE TO FIND IT AGAIN,BUT HAD NO LUCK UNTIL I FOUND IT HERE. I HAVE TRIED TO GET THE RADIO STATIONS TO PLAY HIS MUSIC AND THEY WILL BUT ONLY SO SELDOM.nOW I HAVE THE CD I CAN LISTEN AS OFTEN AS I LIKE.I REALLY LOVE HEARING HIM THAT I CANT SEE WHY HES NOT STILL AROUND.

5 out of 5 stars Moving and Powerful.......2000-03-08

This was the soundtrack for a love that was not to be. Each song is poignant and beautifully heartbreaking in its own way. I am sorry James House never followed this up with another album. I only wonder if the person who I secretly shared this with ever thinks of me too.

5 out of 5 stars Leaves me wanting more, much more!.......2000-01-18

A truly gifted singer songwriter. When James connects with the music it is a joy to hear. This work breaks out of the narrow boundaries of country and soars with music that has both unique melodies and meaningful poetic lyrics. I still listen to this album regularly, even though I have owned it for over four years. I truly hope that James is able to continue sharing his gift of music.

5 out of 5 stars The Better of the two.......2006-06-03

I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03

This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.

A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.

4 out of 5 stars Same as 'Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800'.......2004-02-21

Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

3 out of 5 stars More does not necessarily mean better.......2005-09-21

This recording sounds less like the Boston Pops and more like 101 Strings. (That's not a compliment.) In fact, I know there are better performances of each one out there. These are actually all pleasant, familiar pieces which I like. I'm not at all sure they should all be on the same album. If you want background music while you're reading, or making love, this is perfect. If you're driving late at night and trying to stay awake, not so good! In short, the sum is less than the total of its parts. But I'm giving it a 3, because I do like most of the individual pieces, and I never give more than 4.

        Album Description

Second in this popular series, and another hour of great band organ music, Volume II of Carousel Breezes continues the excellent selection (by Merrick Price, of Seabreeze Park) and quality of Carousel Breezes. Twenty four of the most requested songs at the carousel are found on this recording, and they begin with the ringing of the bell that starts each carousel ride. Fox-trots, one-steps, and two-steps, each melody captures the spirit of days gone by.
