Here's a bountiful blues buffet from deep in the heart of Texas, courtesy of the long-running Austin City Limits television series. Texas talents--including Lightnin' Hopkins, represented by a suitably idiosyncratic "Rock Me Baby"; the razor-sharp Albert Collins, ripping through "Travellin' South" in front of a horn-powered band; and W.C. Clark, the godfather of the Austin blues scene, who sparkles on a song by hometown hero Willie Nelson--make the most of their spotlight time. And, naturally, there's Stevie Ray Vaughan, who leads Double Trouble through a tight and tasty "Love Struck Baby." Jimmie Vaughan's tribute to his blues brother, "Six Strings Down," follows in an example of the collection's creative sequencing. In like manner Gatemouth Brown's "Born in Louisiana" leads into Dr. John's New Orleans version of "Since I Fell for You," and Clark's rendition of "Ain't It Funny How Time Slips Away" segues into B.B. King's personalized cover of Nelson's classic "Night Life." The honorary Austinites, including a rambunctious Buddy Guy and a solo Rory Block, also make considerable contributions, the best probably being Taj Mahal bouncing through "Queen Bee" with Ben Harper on slide guitar, although Keb' Mo's straightahead "Tell Everybody I Know" isn't far behind. --Michael Point

3 out of 5 stars Should have been better.......2007-07-03

I get the feeling all of the artists record labels held back releasing any really good stuff. You get some tasty work here though. Worth adding to the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent cd...But there's not anyone hotter.......2006-01-12

Than Buddy Guy, doing "Mary Had A Little Lamb" This cd was a pleasant surprise, too bad Austin City Limits does not offer more of these blues tributes on cd and dvd..Would be sweet to hear the full hour performance of Buddy Guy and others listed on here. Buy it..You won't be disappointed, if you are, then you just don't get the blues.

5 out of 5 stars A great compilation!.......2000-11-17

This is a great sampling of the blues. B.B. King does an excellent "Night Life", his guitar is fabulous! One of my favorites is W.C. Clark, who I had never heard before. "Queen Bee" is the best Taj Mahal I have heard. Miss Lavelle White, Stevie Ray, Lightnin' Sam, Collins....I could go on and on. The recording quality varies very little from track to track, which is expected from Austin City Limits, as they are one of the few TV program which delivers excellent sound. Don't pass this one up!

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars This is a Texas blues mirror!!.......2000-11-05

Texas is a State, full of hot deserts, but this cd shows that not only hot deserts...Texas always have hot blues with great icons of this musical style. We must reverence this contribution, specially the legendary SRV,and the great melodic voice of Delbert Mc Clinton! If you don't know what is the Texas Blues Twister, just buy this cd and.........

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Guitar magazine review:.......1999-02-09

This greatest hits collection assembles fifteen performances from the famous television series "Austin City Limits." As a tribute to the televised music venue, it's a fine CD. And as a live blues disc it doesn't get much better than this. The recordings range from Lightnin' Sam Hopkins' "Rock Me Baby" from 1978 to Delbert McClinton's "Leap of Faith" from 1997. In between, are hot numbers from Albert Collins, Jimmie Vaughan, Keb' Mo', Gatemouth Brown, Dr. John, Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, Miss Lavelle White, the Neville brothers, Rory Block, and W.C. Clark. That's quite a lineup. Among the best tracks here, however, is Stevie Ray Vaughan's blistering performance of "Love Struck Baby" from 1983, when he was near the peak of his powers. B.B. King also turns in a fine "Night Life" from 1982 packed with his trademark vibrato and phrasing. Hot stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Fine, stylish blues record.......2004-01-10

If Big Walter Horton got mentioned in the title every time he played on an album, half of all major 50s, 60s and 70s blues records should be called "This-and-than-artist and Big Walter Horton".

Here he is again, blowing his harp behind Robert Johnson's one-time travelling companion Johnny Shines on a reissue of Testament 2217 with two bonus tracks added.
This is Shines' second band-backed, electric album for Testament, and it brings together material from two different sessions (Chicago 1966 and Los Angeles 1969). Otis Spann plays superb piano on the Chicago tracks, which features the same band that played with Shines on his "Masters Of Modern Blues" album, and Luther Allison plays second and occational lead guitar on the L.A. tracks.
And the music is excellent. There may not be very much here as instantly memorable as the best songs by men like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, or Elmore James, but the songs are of generally high quality, and this is an enjoyable slice of classic 60s blues, played by some of the finest musicians of the genre.

The tracks recorded in Chicago are the best, featuring both Spann and blues drummer par excellence Fred Below (Horton is on all of them), and they include a fine rendition of Big Maceo Merriweather's "Worried Life Blues" and the almost jazz-like "I Want To Warn You".
But the L.A. tracks are not far behind, with some great guitar playing from Luther Allison, a funky "Fat Mama", and a great "If It Ain't Me", which sees Johnny Shines doing a good impression of Rice Miller (Sonny Boy Williamson II).

A critic once called this the greatest Chicago blues record ever. It's not, but it is a pretty good one all the same.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2000-11-21

    5 out of 5 stars Just Excellent.......2002-11-02

I couldn't write a higher review for a cd . . . absolutely excellent. This cd offers a sampler of some of the most orignal and amazing blues around. With everthing from the drum and fife sound of napolean strickland to the astounding strength of fred mcdowell's slide guitar. . . there is nothing in blues as subversive and powerful this sampler. What chess offers to testement in terms of authenticity is what brittany spears offers to Lenard Cohen for song writing. CHECK OUT THIS CD!! I can't recomend it highly enough.

    5 out of 5 stars Gattis Status.......2006-02-12

In these days of washed out songs and lyrics, Gattis still keeps it true to the heart with emotion packed writing and even better from the heart playing. The voice stronger than ever belting out the lost and heartache that goes into finely crafted tunes to be appreciated for years to come.

At such a young age, He has worked with such an array of talented musicians it shines thru in every track. Raw, contemplative, with a smile behind the tears.

I highly recommend *Big City Blues* to Anyone that enjoys
feeling pain or happiness thru music.

5 out of 5 stars This is a terrific cd.......2005-11-17

This is a great CD from Keith Gattis. You cannot go wrong with this album. Keith mixes the blues with country beautifully.

1 out of 5 stars Keith should go back to the country........2005-05-16

I figured that I owed it to Keith Gattis to buy his new cd because his first one, a truly great bunch of songs, didn't get the notice it should have. Well, I don't owe him any more. What a disappointment. This stuff is neither blues nor country; it's mostly just dreary, unimaginative whining. Please, Mr. Gattis, get back to where you came from.

5 out of 5 stars Better the Second time around.......2005-05-14

Two is a lucky number for Keith Gattis. Big City Blues is his sophmore effort and this is the second go round for the project. Recently, Keith Gattis has garnered a following as Dwight Yoakam's guitar slinging sideman, yet Gattis is an artist in his own right. Big City Blues is gritty, bluesy, and showcases Keith's hard driving guitar. It is a wonderful listen. This Austin native takes the basics of the music he listened to growing up and blended it all together in an engaging, driving, and at times haunting mix. The strength of his lyrical skill is evident throughout the project. Keith's rendition of self-penned "El Cerrito Place" (recently and successfully covered by Charlie Robison) and "Back to Austin" are pure Gattis. "Reconsider" is currently getting airplay on several Americana and alt/country stations.

With Yoakam's new release and rebirth in popularity comes a new realization of the talents of Keith Gattis. Big City Blues was released a couple years ago and has now been re-released. DON'T MISS IT THIS TIME AROUND! It borders on brilliant. Like Yoakam, Gattis refuses to fall into the normal packaging that success via the usual Nashville channels requires. But make no mistake, we'll be hearing a great deal from Mr. Gattis in the future, whether Nashville embraces him or not. This is just the beginning. I'd hate to be the one to break the news to Dwight, but he may soon be losing a guitar player.

5 out of 5 stars KICK BUT COUNTRY.......2005-05-11

You will NOT be sorry for buying this cd. I am on my second copy already. I wore out the first. You become addicted to his voice and his accent. Keith Gattis RULES!

5 out of 5 stars There's nothing like the real thing.......2006-05-27

Before you listen to the fake re-creations, listen to this CD. This is the true big band sound, before it was watered-down and commercialized by the Dorseys and Glenn Millers. I'm giving it five stars, even though many of the tracks aren't Kansas City style at all(Fletcher Henderson and the Carolina Cotton Pickers are Harlem and Arkansas respectively), and of course, I can't explain why Harry James is in here, but he ain't all that bad. Anyhow, just listen. This is the music that defined an era.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous overview of 1930's territory music scene.......2001-11-14

This CD is by far the best compilation of music from the black territory bands of the southwestern United States during the Depression years.

These bands toured on the back roads of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and Arkansas and played mostly one-night stops at local taverns and dance halls in colored neighborhoods during the 1930's and early 1940's.

Many of Kansas City's bands went on to fame and fortune, and Count Basie was probably the most famous of these. Other bandleaders like Ernie Fields found local fame on the Kansas City - Oklahoma City - Dallas circuit, but never made it big nationally.

While this CD was conceived by CBS/Sony Entertainment as a companion to Robert Altman's movie "Kansas City", it can be thoroughly enjoyed by anyone who is looking for a good collection of swing tunes, or who wants to know more about the roots of the Swing Era in the southwestern United States.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent cross-section of KC 20s-30s Jazz.......2000-02-27

Combining cuts from all the key KC players and many obscure groups, this CD is an excellent intro to the KC 20s-30s sound, and the sound quality is great. This is the original music that is celebrated by the awesome soundtrack to Robert Altman's film, "Kansas City" -- however, this disc stomps and swings more consistently from song-to-song than the soundtrack. Count Basie tears up the piano on a track or two from the mid-30's.

5 out of 5 stars Let me take you to a place I know that I know you'll want to go .......2006-08-28

when this album came out I was hypnotized by the song good life and to this day consider it to be in the top three of favorite songs. This is the type of music a house party has to have in order to a real house party.Big Fun.

5 out of 5 stars Prance Ladies, Prance!.......2005-10-02

When this album first came out, I was only twenty-two and the club scene was my life. "Big Fun" and "Paradise" were staples every single night. In fact, one night the DJ played tracks 1-10 all the way through and NOBODY left the dance floor. This album was just that popular. My own copy was lost in a move and I thought Inner City would be a thing of the past.

At a friend's 40th birthday party this year, all of a sudden "Ain't Nobody Better" was played. Let me tell you, these dinosaurs (including myself) got their carcasses up and began flailing themselves about as if it was 1989 all over again. I had to find this album.

There is not one single disappointing track. "The Power of Passion" may be a bit much, however, it's better than any Trance song ever forced on the unsuspecting public. "Do You Love What You Feel" to me is the best on this imcomparable CD. "Big Fun" and "Good Life" just dare you to keep sitting down without wanting to walk the runway. It's hard to believe that only two people made this classic.

Dance music today is soooo ordinary. If you want a reason to dance buy this CD! THIS is what dance music is supposed to be!

        hi,

great to see others wrote reviews, though an old album, it's appeal seems timeless. i haven't listened to this cd in years now, and i put it in to drive to and WOOOOOOOO, i forgot the connection i made in my mind when i first heard them, and still kinda hear (though it's a reverse comparison), it would be, don't get angry, dee-lite(shh did he? oh my? how dare you!), this in the sense that dee-lite in essence were an electronic soul dance group, that ventured into breakbeats, trance, dnb, but in the beginning on world clique some of the ambitions heard THERE can be heard realized HERE.

great sound, good to drive to, her voice is more soulful than usually heard on electronic dance albums, it adds ummmppphhh.

        5 out of 5 stars We're Having Big Fun!.......2004-10-29

What a team - Paris Grey and Kevin Saunderson! Paris had been on the Chicago circuit for a while. When "Big Fun" was spotted as background music for a TV commercial those of us who were househeads went berserk! The whole album is a treat. Track one lays the foundation of original Detroit Techno: the coming together of all people and the preservation of the inner city (by the way, that same theme was reflected in some earlier Chicago records) Track four is a really interesting tune especially being of a slower tempo. Track six is a definite favorite, as it is such a "happy" tune. Track seven is basically a Chicago favorite that dominated the college radio stations. My absolute favorite track is the last one. "Secrets Of The Mind" is very hypnotic and it has the subtle Chicago flavor mixed with the upfront Detroit industrial sound. This is an album you can trust!
