Bill Miller's first major-label album,
The Red Road, reflected both musically and lyrically his background as a Native American who grew up on a Wisconsin reservation. The wooden flute and acoustic guitars of that project are replaced by a conventional rock & roll band on the follow-up,
Raven in the Snow, which reflects another side of Miller's childhood. Unfortunately, Miller's heavy-handed approach to rock includes stiff, clumsy rhythms, overstated vocals, and such hackneyed lyrics as "With the wings of sorrow, I have taken flight/Cloaked in the darkness like a thief in the night."

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2007-06-15
I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.
Awesome.......2007-06-12
This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.
Excellent Music tracks from Movie.......2007-05-03
Brings the movie back as you listen to the full version of the track.
Complete?.......2007-04-07
This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.
Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03
I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

Commissioned to come up with a soundtrack for the 1994 Turner Network Television special The Native Americans, Robbie Robertson delivered some of his most haunting and evocative work to date. Combining the sleek atmospherics of 1991's Storyville with traditional tribal chanting and instrumentation, Music for the Native Americans often manages to sound both contemporary and timeless. Unfortunately, Robertson's lyrics are often as clunky as they are well intentioned--though brief, his liner notes are far more powerful and informative--and his gravelly speak-singing is consistently outclassed by Native American guest vocalists Pura Fe, Soni, and Jen, whose "Mahk Jchi (Heartbeat Drum Song)" is also the album's highlight. File under "flawed but interesting." --Dan Epstein

As for me and MY family..........2007-05-28
we love it!!! I had this CD when the PBS show came out, and my eldest daughter (now 21) loved it. We listened to it every night. Then my youngest came along....and scratched it by accident. So I HAD to get another. She loves it too. I've heard some say it's not representative of "true" NA music. Personally, whether it is or not is nothere or there for me. I know I like the music, and my family does as well. I will always have a copy of this in my library.
Good and powerful.......2007-02-11
This CD has a great collection of songs. Never heard the artist before but he sure could deliver good and powerful songs. Highly recommended for a taste of something nice and different.
Soul Reaching.......2007-01-21
I must repeat what others have said; awesome! It's been since August that I've purchased this CD and have played it daily. My family and I have never tired of listening to it. Ignore that negative review please, you have to have this CD, don't miss another minute of not having it. In all honesty it will move your soul, as if the ancestors themselves guided his words and reasoning. You'll be spellbound, and yet moved to be creative as well. It awakens what has stayed silenced within. Nothing negative, all positive, no more illusions. Keep listening to the ancestors words Robbie, and make more CD's!
just judging the music.......2007-01-07
Seems like most of the negative reviews have more to do with gripes with Robertson's personal life than this album. I don't know much about that. Just judging this album by the music the comes out of my speakers, it is incredibly good. Incredibly, incredibly good.
Awesome Music.......2006-07-03
Robbie Robinson is great and this is a wonderful cd. I heard it first as a tape years ago and was so glad to find it on cd at a reasonable cost. I love the chants and the women's voices are beautiful.

Soviet Army Band & Chorus aren't taking any prisoners!.......2007-05-12
If you enjoy a good stiring martial male chorus then spend some time with these guys. They're all graduates of Soviet musical acadamies and any one of them could have graced the top opera houses of the world. You don't have to know any Russian to appreciate this CD. The songs are glorious (just don't translate them -- machine guns, death to foes, etc.), and will make you want to march on Berlin all over again.
Good music........2007-03-09
I had heard a few songs by the Red Army Choir in the past and happened upon this CD set a while back, I found it to be far better than I had hoped and would reccoment it to anyone who enjoys Russian folk music, choir in general, and cultural items from when Russia was still the Soviet Union.
Magnificent!.......2007-02-27
I'm so glad I stumbled onto this.
Spirited, committed, manly singing. Soul-shaking stuff! The ensemble is incisive; soloists are marvelous. The folk melodies are enchanting. The songs--and the singers--are bound up in the cultural fabric of the Cossacks, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky...on and on.., Chekhov, Trotsky, Nabakov... This music conveys the great romantic, dignified, boistrous soul of the Russian People. (Loosely speaking. Some members of the chorus were presumably of other nationalities once part of the Soviet Union. And some of the songs are not Russian).
I don't speak Russian, but listening to this makes me wish I did. What a beautiful-sounding language it is.
I loved it!.......2007-02-22
Even though I cannot speak Russian, the quality of this choral group is beyond excellent. Many of these pieces are extremely moving and stirring. The rendering of the Soviet anthem and the song "Let's Go" (V'put) come to my mind. "Let's Go" became a huge hit in Russia when it was featured in a movie about the Great Patriotic War, and indeed, hearing it - you can well imagine ranks upon ranks of hard-eyed, grim-faced Soviet soldiers striding into battle against the Wehrmacht.
The ultimate collection.......2004-06-15
Excellent performance by the choir and the orchestra. The grandeur, the charm, and the romance! Great collection of songs, sure to bring back memories!

Having stumbled in 1999 with the lackluster Tight Rope, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn picked themselves up and dusted off their Wranglers with 2001's Steers and Stripes, an album that some listeners considered their best. But that was before Red Dirt Road, a collection of coming-of-age songs in which country's most successful duo comes clean about who they are and what forged their turbo-tonk sound. The title song is a spectacular and poignant slice of backwoods Southern milieu that melds the push of the gospel with the pull of desire--which, for a '60s teenager, meant girls, cars, and the beer-laced taste of freedom. Both men know a little bit about those subjects (don't miss Dunn's hidden track, "Holy War," which skewers TV preachers), as well as the thrill of Exile on Main Street-era Rolling Stones, a sound that permeates at least three songs here, including the randy "You Can't Take the Honky Tonk Out of the Girl." Bluegrass also gets a strong nod on the exquisite "Caroline," as does the Tulsa-bred, Leon Russell-fueled music that personally schooled Dunn in the '70s, particularly on "I Used to Know This Song By Heart," a tour de force of sharp Pentecostal vocals punctuated by the searing guitar work of Kenny Greenburg. Everything about this album moves the duo up a level, even Kix's singing on "When We Were Kings," a true-life remembrance of the Vietnam years. A few songs predictably pad things out, but on the whole Red Dirt Road is both surprisingly affecting and monstrously good. --Alanna Nash

True Enjoyment.......2005-09-03
Oh what have I been missing!! This is one truely enjoyable CDs. I put this one on during a road trip and just really enjoyed each and every song on here. Super mix!
Dust and Sunshine______________.......2005-03-03
______________
In my opinion, a band releasing an album naming a road is, perhaps subconsciously, making an effort to release their best material in years. When this album came out, I immediately picked it up, wary about B&D's recent tumultuous career path before the release of "Steers and Stripes." "Red Dirt Road" does not fail.
______________
It's less of a country album than many country fans seem to suggest (as I've read on the reviews here). But to a standard guy like me, this is as country as it's gonna get, at least for now. And that's good enough.
______________
Each song has riffs and musical twists that grab you and make you sing outloud, or tap a rhythm on your jeans while listening. And I like the formula they use on several songs: an off-EQ'd or reverbed guitar (12-string, slide, etc.) jamming by itself, before the music kicks in and takes you away.
______________
This has become my favorite B&D album so far. I wonder if fans consider S&S and Red Dirt Road to be "new Brooks & Dunn"? I feel a sort of different spirit in these albums than with their older releases, which are just as kickin' with the catchy tunes, but a little lacking with slower songs.
______________
The Beatles released "Abbey Road" and the songs were thematically and musically linked. The same goes with "Red Dirt Road," a more Western approach to small town living, dirt, sunshine, beer, good friends, and lost loves...and this album seems to be haunted as well. Listen closely...they both sing frequently about the past, memories, things that once were...
______________
Of all those "road" albums (Peachtree, Cross, Car Wheels on Gravel, Golden) I think it's fair to say Red Dirt will become an iconic album for this band.
PHENOMENAL CD.......2004-10-24
Truly enjoyed this exceptional piece of work. Very diverse music while maintaining the country base all the way through. You can really appreciate all of their musical influences growing up.
Their writing is exceptional on "Red Dirt Road", "When We Were Kings", etc. etc. etc.
Don't know if there is anyone in country music today with a finer tenor then Dunn. He shines on this CD especially on "I Used To Know This Song By Heart". Kix sounds great as well.
Surprised more songs weren't released off of this CDs. I think they went into this as wanting to express their musical influences and not necessarily to release radio friendly songs. I REALLY ENJOYED ALL OF THE SONGS ON THIS ONE. There are some songs that really make you stop and think/reflect which is what country music is all about.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS CD. THE MORE I LISTEN TO IT THE MORE I LOVE IT. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK BROOKS & DUNN.
Put them in jail.......2004-08-28
So this is a country album? Let me see here, the first song sounds like a song they released a few years ago about Little Miss Honky Tonk. Then the 5th song sounds like every other ballad they have ever released. This is pathetic just like their careers. Singing about boot-scootin, beer drinking just cutting a shine ya'll. Don't ever call these guys old school. Old school is Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson etc.. How much more of this garbage are people going to buy? There is nothing that even comes close to being original here. They also started the, "honky tonkin" revolution with their first album which shot the legends of country right in the heart. Put them in jail, take away their right to record POP music and make them listen to Bill Monroe or Hank Williams for a few months.

Bill Miller's first major-label album, The Red Road, reflected both musically and lyrically his background as a Native American who grew up on a Wisconsin reservation. The wooden flute and acoustic guitars of that project are replaced by a conventional rock & roll band on the follow-up, Raven in the Snow, which reflects another side of Miller's childhood. Unfortunately, Miller's heavy-handed approach to rock includes stiff, clumsy rhythms, overstated vocals, and such hackneyed lyrics as "With the wings of sorrow, I have taken flight/Cloaked in the darkness like a thief in the night." --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
GREAT CD!!!.......2007-07-09
The Ediorial Review by Geoffrey Himes is way off base. Bill Miller is one of the best musicians I have ever hear (recorded and live). From soothing traditional flute songs to more hard driving guitar tunes that will help you get up and moving, Bill Miller's music has something for everyone!
Wonderful collection..........2007-06-20
I've owned this CD since it first came out, and I still love listening to it 14 years later. I first saw and heard Bill Miller on old cable TV's The Nashville Network. His performance so appealed to me, I couldn't wait to get this CD as soon as it was available. This is a nice collection of some variety, including a Native American tale, traditional pow-wow music, and modern songs that evoke compassion and sorrow, yet lift the spirit. I love it.
Totally Fantastic.......2007-02-19
The Red Road is true and powerful. It cuts straight to your soul.
I can't say enough good about this. It moved me emotionally in a way that
hardly ever happens. Faith Of A Child had me in tears. Bill Miller is
unbelievably great at getting the emotion of his subject matter to the
listener. I never get tired of listening to this.

I bought this CD with high hopes. I absolutely loved the first one, the one recorded live. This one was a disappointment though. The guys songs are good and their voices are in good form but it was missing something...feeling, I guess. The live concert version can make me cry and laugh it's so sung with feeling, but this is just singing. I just felt it lacked feeling. I guess that's why I was disappointed with it.
What a magnificent Heritage.......2005-01-22
I highly recommend this album to all fans of Irish music. This is the last album with Ronan as a memember and it is one of their best. Ronan's "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen" is wonderful, so too is Finbarr's "South of the Border". The theme from the Titanic "My Heart Will Go On" is the best version since Celine Dione's. My favorite track is Anthony's "The West's Awake" . One point to note is that this group is one of the few out there who can perform live with an equally good recorded sound. Having listened to them at Meadowbrook NH the night of Ronan's farewell I can assure you that live or recorded they have a fantastic sound. I highly recommend this CD to all fans of Irish music.

A Review .......2004-10-30
I have never really been a fan of Traditional Irish Music and had never even HEARD of the Irish Tenors....That is until a friend of mine introduced me to the recording of "Live In Belfast" Instantly, I was hooked. I have become addicted to a lot of these songs. Especially the goofier ones they sing. like "Phil the Fluther" and "Courtin in the Kitchen" When Heritage was released I was estatic....As I had loved all the songs they had released before. Even though they recycled some of their songs. I loved the way they re recorded "Red Is The Rose" with Finbar in place of John and also "Fields Of Athenry" I Found this version to be better than the other one. I found it really bizare that they would sing "My Heart Will Go On" as that is not an Irish Song...Ireland was where the Titanic sank. but still. I really enjoyed listening to it. "South of the Boarder" and "Golden Jubilee" along with "Little Brigid Flynn" were quite entertainingly cute. I really enjoyed Anthony's "The West's Awake" and "The Parting Glass" and "The Harp That Once Through Tara's Halls" I would, too also love to see Anthony put out a solo album.
Heritage, The Irish Tenors.......2004-09-30
This is another delightful effort by Anthony, Finbar and Ronan.
My favorite songs were "Off to Philadephia" (Anthony) and "My Heart Will Go On" (Finbar). I didn't even mind the repetition of some songs heard on past CDs - but wondered about it, until I learned of the departure of Ronan Tynan. I am curious to see the kind of arrangements they have included on their new CD, due to come out later this year, which they made upon the return of John McDermott. John is a Canadian of Celtic descent, whose voice, though pleasant in a folksy way, does not seem to blend as well with Anthony and Finbar as did Ronan's trained vocals. I would be very pleased to see Anthony make a solo CD, including such ballads as (my all-time favorite) Bantry Bay and some of the wonderfully playful Irish ditties he sometimes performs at his solo concerts.
Tattered Tenors.......2004-08-20
When the Irish Tenors burst upon the public scene not too many years ago, they were heralded as a refreshing change in the sea of musical mediocrity. The original trio of McDermott, Kearns and Tynan thrilled us with their exuberance and vocal virtuosity and frankly, I miss that. (Please note: since I originally wrote this review the threesome has changed to McDermott, Kearns and Wright with Tynan having left the group).
As one of their latest efforts, "Heritage" is an "okay" album, but it certainly lacks the freshness and fun of the Irish Tenors' earlier efforts. Of course, there are notable exceptions such as Kearns' roguish "Off to Philadelphia", the sprightly "Golden Jubilee" and the beautiful "The West's Awake" solo by Kearns. Wright's "Little Brigid Flynn" is downright fun but his "South of the Border" is oddly out of place. With too many recycled songs and a little too little Anthony Kearns, I personally found "Heritage" to be the weakest effort in the generally stellar Irish Tenors' discography.

Voices Full of Emotion.......2005-12-19
Once you hear this chorus...whether under the Red Army Choir or Soviet Army Choir banner...you will be addicted. I certainly am. This is not the best disc available on Amazon, but it is unique in that it showcases all Russian songs (since the chorus was a "national" choir, recordings done in London, Paris, etc. frequently contain songs from other countries). And while there may be better and more professional recordings, of this choir and more professional bands, these soldiers succeed in achieving a wide range of color with their vocal talent on this recording. A great bargain.
Sound quality.......2004-07-06
The songs that are chosen on this CD are excellent. The problem, the sound recording is not great. It is clear, but when the choir sings in a low tone, it is simply cannot be heard.
A Trip to Soviet Russia.......2004-03-18
In the 1970's, it seemed that defectors from the USSR made headlines in American newspapers every day. When a dancer defected, it was always believed that artistic freedom was the cause. When writers defected, it was due to the controversy surrounding their works. Athletes were usually viewed as wanting a taste of the good life, but when the Red Army Choir defected, it was a sweet victory for the west. These people were the symbol of all the USSR stood for and sang anthems praising the Soviets, yet they longed for freedom. We loved it when they defected.
Even though many of the songs performed by the ensemble praised the virtues of the Soviet Union, western audiences love the group. No it was not due to be soft on Communism. The group had a sound that was addictive and possessed terrific musical gifts, all of which can be found in this recording.
Listening to this recording is almost nostalgic now that the Soviet Union is no longer, but the recording has a certain appeal. It includes all the favorites including Meadowlands (Polyushku pole), Dark Eyes, Moscow Nights, and the Volga Boatman's Song, probably the best piece on the recording. The ensemble performs well together, the band give the music a distinct sound, and while the soloists are not perfect, the imperfections somehow seem appropriate.
There are more expensive recordings by this ensemble, but this budget CD is not just well worth the price, it is actually one of the best available.
Good Value.......2003-11-03
Considering the number of classic songs and the price, you really can't go wrong here. like another poster, i was a bit dissapointed by some very low music in some selections. but for the most part, the quality is quite good and the music is a very nice way to begin to understand and learn about the Russian people.
Good, but not perfect.......2003-01-19
This is a very good CD, and the music really captures the power and total authority of the Soviet state. It is very moving music on one hand, and also really reflects the situation of the Russian workingmen living under this tyranny. This CD would get 5 stars, but there are a few portions where the sound is so soft that it cannot be heard, such as at the beginning of the sixth track. This is the only problem with the CD worth noting, the CD is done by the Red Army choir, and the songs are virtually all made of of the huge band & choir, Soviet power music that we all have come to know and love. I do recommend this CD strongly.

Customer Reviews:
One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09
Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

Film Music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Vol. 2.......2007-01-06
This CD features the score Vaughan Williams wrote for the 1941 British film 49th Parallel. The music is a series of musical portraits of various parts of the film. The film itself was an effort to bring to the United States the story of how Canada was helping the British war effort. The hope was that the United States would soon become an ally of Great Britain in its war against the Nazi's. While the music for the film has been preserved, there is no current DVD copy of the film for region 1. Turner Classic Movies shows the film from time to time.
Ralph Vaughan Williams and his Film Music.......2006-10-31
Ralph Vaughan Williams' film scores are outstanding. What images he created when you listen to CD. I found this CD in a used bin. I was really surprised. I no longer have to wait to hear them on public radio!
