Massive and impressively comprehensive, the Country Roads Box Collection is classic John Denver. Spanning four discs, the collection not only draws upon the obvious highlights of Denver's career, but also includes fan favorites that might not have received the same airplay as their more popular counterparts. Listening to Country Roads, the finesse with which Denver balanced his folk rock tendencies with his country leanings emerges as testament to his talent. As a box set, the collection would be remiss if it didn't include "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "Annie's Song," "Thank God I'm a Country Boy," or "Rocky Mountain High"--and, of course, the box set's namesake is here. Later hits like "Calypso," with its sea-shanty yodeling, portray Denver's ability to ease himself into the role of balladeer, regardless of the genre. Novelty duets with Placido Domingo and Emmylou Harris were intended to rekindle what seemed to be lagging popularity, but Country Roads establishes John Denver's contributions as timeless, nonetheless. --Steve Gdula

I chose this 4-CD set because it included one of my favorite Denver songs, "Eclipse". Disc four had some familiar material, but there were a lot of songs that only an avid fan would be interested. For the casual listener, or someone who wants only the popular songs I strongly recommend the 2-CD set, "The Rocky Mountain Collection".

4 out of 5 stars Less than perfect selections.......2006-06-23

The first problem for any John Denver 'best of' collection is to determine which version of certain great songs should be featured. For example, should the album have the original studio version of 'Thank God I'm a Country Boy' or have the live version that was the super hit? Should it have the live or studio versions of 'My Sweet Lady' and 'Sweet Surrender'? Similarly, should it have the original spare version of 'Sunshine On My Shoulders' or the string laden version that appeared on Greatest Hits?

Such choices are forever debatable. I have come to believe that for John Denver both versions of such songs should be includued on a box set. The greater weakness of the collection is that almost 50% of it comes after the Windsong album, which was Denver's final truly first-rate album. While the songs recorded after Windsong that are here are all fine to very good, with a couple that are pure gems, thus I would advocate cutting none, to make roon for those songs, great songs from earlier in Denver's career were omitted.

From the Rocky Mountain High album, I would also include the Season Suite, which has 5 short parts: 'Summer,' 'Fall,' Winter,' 'Late Winter, Early Spring,' and 'Spring.' From Farewll Andromeda I would add 'Berkeley Woman.' From Back Home Again I would add 'Matthew' and 'The Music is You.' From Windsong I would add 'Cowboy's Delight' and 'Two Shots.' Though I see I Want to Live as the album that marks Denver's beginning descent into cliched repetition and do-gooding sloganeering, I would add from that album 'To the Wild Country.' If only because of Denver's love of nature, a box set should include him singing Michael Martin Murphy's 'Boy from the Country.'

So, basically what I am saying is that this should be a 5 disc set. While there is much about it that is very good, I can't help but think about its many omissions.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable!.......2006-06-22

I was hesitant at first about purchasing such a large volume of Denver's works, several of which I had never heard, but after I started playing the CDs, I became hooked! My CD player holds only three CDs at a time, so my biggest problem was which CD of the four would be left out!

Some of the songs that I'd never heard before became my favorites. I was delighted to learn that John had a very spiritual side that showed up often in his musical compositions. I especially love 'Singing Skies and Dancing Waters', 'How Can I Leave You Again, and 'It Amazes Me'. Songs like 'Come and Let Me Look In Your Eyes', 'Sweet Surrender', 'Looking for Space' and 'Wild Montana Skies' soon found their way to my 'must be played every day' list.

John's songwriting covered most of the happiness and complexities of the human condition as evidenced in 'For Baby','Follow Me','Seasons of the Heart','Shaghai Breezes', and 'I Can't Escape', just a few of his sensitive and lovely, although lesser known works that are included in this stellar collection. Two of the most beautiful songs he ever wrote, 'My Sweet Lady' and 'Perhaps Love', are also featured.

For the platinum hit fans, all the standards are included as well: 'Take Me Home Country Roads', 'Leaving on a Jet Plane', and 'Rocky Mountain High' among many, many others.

So many of us were impressed by the multitude of Denver megahits that we heard played daily on the radio but we never were introduced to the even more remarkable songs that he wrote and recorded during his career, many of which are included in this 4-CD set. I think that's what makes this collection so very special and a bargain at any price! I play it all the time and never get tired of it!

3 out of 5 stars Stick to the originals.......2007-06-20

I'm a big Denver fan, but the original recordings to me were near perfect. I purchased this because everyone gave it such rave reviews. Yes, his voice is strong, but it also seems more forced - like he was trying to prove how well he could sing. Several of the recordings reminded me of someone trying to sing them in a choir, with vibrato and vocal tricks.

Call me stubborn, but I think that only seriously serious Denver fans need this cd in their collection. If you like comparing one recording to the other, then by all means, buy it. If you want memories, stick to the originals.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably beautiful CD.......2006-12-21

I thought I had heard the absolute best of John Denver - I'm a huge fan, and have pretty much everything he has recorded. This CD almost replaces them all - all of the songs have been rerecorded and updated, and his voice has never been more powerful. And I thought "Windsong" couldn't get any better! This recording is NOT live, like the title on the web page says, and is not just John and his guitar...there are plenty of songs with an orchestral background. This version of "Annie's Song" is just gorgeous, and "For You" has much more piano than the original recording. "I'm Sorry" sounds so much fuller with the addition of bass and drums. I know it sounds corny, but this CD will bring you to tears - it's simply that beautiful. What a huge, huge loss when we lost John Denver. If you're a fan, you cannot miss this one - he has never been better.

5 out of 5 stars John Denver Unplugged.......2006-07-26

This is a very nice collection. The recordings don't deviate too much from the original recordings. I really enjoyed this CD and think you will enjoy it also. If you are a John Denver fan, I recommend that you add this to your collection.

Wonderful, rich, mature voice a must have! Many new songs that I'd never heard.

5 out of 5 stars Just a great album.......2006-01-29

I've loved John Denver since I was a kid. I'd listen to him on my parent's 8-track and watch for him religiously on The Muppet Show! This album has to be his finest. I have several of his CDs and it is a treat to listen to his early stuff and then to put this one on. His voice has a richness and purity to it that only comes from wisdom and experiences (not to mention decades of singing). The maturity of his voice and his emotions in this one just go right through you. Especially in "For You." It's just heart-breaking that there won't be anything new from him ever again. He is one that will stand the test of time.

3 out of 5 stars A really mixed bag... Very Good and Very Fake.......2006-08-19

John Denver was a really complicated guy. Real highs and abyssmal lows. His music is already beautiful, so if you also cringe when you are relaxing around a campfire when the acoustic guitar appears, there are songs here to skip.
Will Oldhams' version of 'The Eagle and the Hawk' and the Red House Painters "I'm Sorry" cover the cost of admission twice over. They are the most moving songs on the album. You have to buy the album for those two songs. Brilliantly done. The Innocence Mission pulls off 'Follow Me' hauntingly well. If you have an afternoon to adjust your equalizer the Low version of 'Back Home Again' is excellent as well.
I wish I had never heard the Tarnation version of 'Leaving on a Jet Plane'. How can you make a bad song so much worse? The Rachel Haden song has an artificially sweetened bubble-gum feel with over-the-top horn that places it in a bad Japanese cartoon. The other Red House Painter's/Kozelek songs are very well done and are solid. The other songs on the album are very easy to forget. They are blown opportunities by bands that were trying to make the songs more beautiful than they already are by adding gimmicks and overproduction. There is no depth of feeling that grace the originals. If thats your thing maybe you should search out "The Boston Pops play John Denver"....

4 out of 5 stars great interpreters.......2005-12-30

This quirky CD is the perfect example of the fact that there is an endless number of great songs out there in search of a great interpretation. I did not realized until listening to this CD what a beautiful song "Annie's Song" is. The music industry needs people like this-- people with great voices and interpretive talent to record the already existing great songs. It reminds me of Al Green's version of To Sir With Love. Who would have thought....

4 out of 5 stars sunny days of past and present.......2005-11-04

My mother used to have a well loved and beat-up copy of a two lp john denver live album. She would always play it on saturday mornings when she was cleaning the house. I associate songs like Matthew, the Eagle and the Hawk, Poems Prayers and Promises etc. with morning sun, the smell of pine-sol and lemon pledge and my mother's strong alto pulling me into another childishly happy morning.

I discovered Mark Kozelek through his work as Sun Kil Moon. Their first album was an instant favorite. Right from track one, standing at a listening station in a Borders bookstore back home in Indiana, I knew I needed this music.

John Denver counts as a guilty pleasure for alot of people beacuse he was so resolutely uncool. He was an optimist, a new age-ey mystic AND a country flavored folk singer.
His craft though, at its height, was undeniable. His melodies are absolute human classics and his lyrics bear a soul that may not have ever been in danger of being hip but seemed genuinely good.

Kozelek and his gathered cohorts pay wonderful tribute to that fact on this sincere and fitting collection. Each song stands as a coherent interpretation and a pleasent re-invention.

This collection is likely the closest John Denver will ever get to being "hip" and perhaps he's not entirely out of place.

4 out of 5 stars A somber tribute to John Denver by alternative artists.......2005-03-03

The first concert I ever went to was to see John Denver and to this day when I drive through the Rocky Mountains I have to listen to his original "Greatest Hits" album. We first heard about John Denver for writing "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and singing "Take Me Home (Country Roads)," but he became identified in my mind with Colorado and "Rocky Mountain High." But there was more than the glorification of nature in his music, and my favorite John Denver songs are "Poems, Prayers and Promises" and "Rhymes and Reasons," which can certainly be accused of being more spiritual than commercial in essence.

I stumbled on "Take Me Home: A Tribute to John Denver" because I was going on one of my periodic searches to find interesting covers versions of songs I like and I stumbled across the Rachel Hayden cover of "Poems, Prayers and Promises" on this album. In contrast with the moody and somber approaches taken by most of the artists on this album, Hayden provides a rather perky pop take on the song, with some interesting harmonies in the chorus. It is very different, but that is what is interesting.

That approach is clear from the opening track of the album, "The Eagle and the Hawk" by Bonnie Prince Billy. The shortest of all John Denver songs, this is another personal favorite because of the guitar introduction. But Billy just sings the song a cappella in a simple haunting manner that gives you no other options but to listen to the lyrics this time around. As soon as he starts singing you know that this is a tribute album to someone who has died too song. The other defining element is that these are not artists that you would think of as being anything remotely close to John Denver. But they must have listened to him in their youth and compelled them to pay their respects to his music in their own manner.

For example, it seems the Red House Painters only sings songs of haunting sadness as a means of purging emotions, and their two tracks her are decidedly in that spirit. The sparse instrumentation and Mark Kozelek's introspective vocals emphasize the confessional aspects of "I'm Sorry." But the group relies entirely on almost wall of sound instrumentation to turn "Fly Away" into a dirge (A commentary on the circumstances of Denver's death? Perhaps). At the other end of the spectrum there is "Follow Me" by the Innocence Mission, where Karen Peris' vocals remind me of Melanie (the folk singer, not either of the Spice Girls).

Despite the often quite moody approaches often taken to Denver's songs (e.g., Low's "Back Home Again"), I think many of his fans will be open to what these artists are doing with his songs. Granted, chances are they will not find everything here to their liking. But there will be a couple of songs here that will catch their fancy. Most of these songs might be somber and moody, but they are certainly respectful and I cannot help but thinking with many of these tracks that these artists are literally performing them as if they were at the funeral (cf. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by Jason & The Scorchers or "Rocky Mountain High" by the Yonder Mountain String Band ).

All John Denver and/or country music lovers look here!

Rocky Mountain Collection is an incredible collection of songs by John Denver. The songs chosen on this cd are incredible. It is my all-time favorite cd of anyone. If you are going to buy one John Denver cd please buy this one. It has his best and my favorite songs. Here are some of them.

Leaving on a jet plane; 1967; what a great start to this cd, his version of this song is simply the best.

Rhymes and Reasons; one of my favorite songs, beautifully written. "The children and the flowers are my sister and their brothes, their laughter and their loneliness could clear a cloudy day.

Take Me Home Country Roads; 1971; one of JD's best describing the beauty of West Virginia in this mellow country tune.

The Eagle and the Hawk; so uplifting, makes you feel like the eagle and hawk.

Rocky Mountain High; 1972; speechless.

Annie's Song; is a beautiful song. "You fill up my senses like night in a forest, like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain."

And many, many, more. As I said before if your are going to get a JD cd, get this one, it has so many incredible songs.

5 out of 5 stars Crisp Mountain Air Songs.......2005-03-15

I consider myself a Colorado native even though I was born somewhere in the southwestern desert. But it wasn't until I was 25 years old that my "mountain girl" introduced me to Denver.

By this age, I was old enough to understand and appreciate John Denver. His music respects and gives thanks to America's wilderness in such pleasant ways, his voice is soothing to listen to, the music melodic and composed with a complexity I hadn't initially expected, and eventually this music became a constant in my life. To this day, he is the only musical artist who makes me feel there is a purpose in my life.

The Rocky Mountain Collection comprises some of his greatest material and is perfect for road trips into the mountains (rather than a pile of Denver discs strewn about). By far the best song is Rhymes & Reasons for personal reasons. But the entire album is wonderful.

For people who pay attention to versions: the Rocky Mountain High and Annie's Song tracks are older recordings, lacking a bit of Denver's late-era vitality, which can be found on the Macery release The Best of John Denver. This is a good thing as these two tracks fit in well with the album as a whole.

The very first night I arrived in Hermosa Beach, CA, I was driving around and cars with their windows rolled down thumped modern junk. So I rolled down all my windows and blasted I'd Rather Be A Cowboy! I came to LA seeking my fortune, but someday I will return to the mountains.

I'd rather live on the side of a mountain
Then wander through canyons of concrete and steel
I'd rather laugh with a ray of sunshine
Than lay down my sundown in some smoggy field

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Collection .......2004-10-04

John Denver's unique blend of pop, folk, and country was extremely popular in the early 70s. During that time, he had a plethora of hits and built a solid reputation as a singer-songwriter. His music was surprisingly varied, although most of it celebrated in a simple manner the great outdoors and a uncomplicated way of living. Although his time at the top was relatively brief, his music lives on in the form of several top-notch greatest hits collections.

"The Rocky Mountain Collection" is perhaps Denver's best 2-disk selection. Disk 1 starts with some beautiful pop-folk from his first records, which were not hits for Denver. Many of these early songs are extremely memorable, particularly "Follow Me." His career blossomed when Peter, Paul, and Mary took his "Leaving on a Jet Plane" to #1 for 1 week in 1969, and he started to have hits on his own.

The CD set includes all of his Top 20 pop singles: Take Me Home, Country Roads (#2 in 1971), Rocky Mountain High (#9 in 1973), Sunshine on My Shoulders (#1 for 1 week in 1974), Annie's Song (#1 for 2 weeks in 1974), Back Home Again (#5 in 1974), Sweet Surrender (#13 in 1975), Thank God I'm a Country Boy (#1 for 1 week in 1975), I'm Sorry (#1 for 1 week in 1975), Calypso (#2 for 4 weeks in 1975), and Fly Away (#13 in 1976).

Many of these singles were also Top 10 country songs; in fact, Back Home Again, Thank God I'm a Country Boy, and I'm Sorry went all the way to #1. Denver even won the 1975 Country Music Association Award for Entertainer of the Year. In addition, two of his later country hits are here: Some Days Are Diamonds (Some Days Are Stone) (#10 in 1981) and Wild Montana Skies (Duet with Emmylou Harris) (#14 in 1983).

Finally, a number of lesser hits sparkle on these CDs, such as Perhaps Love, a duet with Placido Domingo, that is quite lovely despite the potentially bizarre pairing. Overall, this collection is a top-notch compilation of Denver's best music. The liner notes are also excellent, incorporating writing and producing credits as well as date of recording. Tons of pictures are also here, and it's great seeing Denver enjoying the outdoors. Finally, an extensive biography of Denver reveals much information about him as an artist and person. A most highly recommended CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable for Denver fans.......2004-08-20

I thought I'd scooped up just about every song the great JD had ever committed to vinyl, and maybe I had, but this collection is chock full of numbers I'd never even heard *of*, let alone heard, before--40 out of the 53 tracks on the five discs. For that alone it's worth the price, setting aside the fact that in most cases $27 will get you at best two and a half CD's.

The "undiscovered" pieces include some of Denver's most beautiful and powerful work, such as "Eagles and Horses," "Ponies," "Whispering Jesse," "Never a Doubt," "I Watch You Sleeping," "For You," "Potter's Wheel," "Two Different Directions," "Chained to the Wheel," "A Country Girl in Paris," "All This Joy," "Thanks to You," "The Gift You Are," "Chosen Ones," "Higher Ground," "Raven's Child," "Amazon," "Falling Leaves," "Islands," "Postcard from Paris," "In a Far Away Land" (sung, if I'm not mistaken, in Chinese!), "Alaska and Me," and "Stonehaven Sunset," plus the delightful novelty "Homegrown Tomatoes," the folky "Foxfire Suite," and the swingingly rhythmic "Sing Australia" (with didgeridoo accompaniment). There are also new and gorgeous mixes of JD's signature songs, "Take Me Home Country Roads" and "Calypso." All are delivered in his unmistakable flexible golden tenor, with great arrangements. These may not be the "original" recordings, but they'll certainly be new to many listeners, and for that reason alone, if you love JD's work and grieved as I did at his death, you need this bargain in your collection.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks the sparkle.......2001-10-26

Collection features some less known and harder to find tunes, and is great for this, but the recording is poor quality, songs are a bit ragged, not at all the perfection generally captured by John Denver.

2 out of 5 stars Not the originals.......2001-08-08

All your favorate songs, just not the version you remember. CD titles are old album titles but track listings seem to have little to do with what was on those original albums. If you are looking for classic JD this is not your best choice.

2 out of 5 stars Music is done differently for the worst........1999-03-12

I am disappointed with this CD collection. The music is too fast a tempo, and the instruments are too loud and numerous. John Denver's voice is drowned out by the instruments. I dislike that many of the songs are a bit different from their original version. I would recommend this collection only to John Denver fanatics who have heard all his music before and want something different.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of old and new.......1999-01-10

This box set is a wonderful collection of the music we think of when remembering John Denver and his newer music. It is interesting to hear him sing familiar songs such as "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Annie's Song" and "Rocky Mountain High" in his mature voice. His newer music is catchy and pleasing to the ear and has the same charm of his early music. I particularly enjoyed "I Watch You Sleeping", which perhaps was written for his young daughter. His songs portray "a man who cares deeply for the environment..." and are a wonderful break from some of today's music about violence and crime. I would recommend this collection to avid John Denver fans as well as anyone who is looking for a set of wonderful music at a great price. Where can you beat 5 CD's for $25.00? Overall, a very enjoyable piece of art.

The artists and songs probably need no introduction here as they are some of the finest songwriters around in 1972 (except no Carole King, whats up with that?). The songs are an excellent representation of their work, and the qualtiy from Warner Brothers is first class.

If you like the collection and the artists, then go for it.

5 out of 5 stars An enjoyable *original* collection.......2004-12-30

As other reviewers said, there are many, many John Denver "collections". In this album though, you'll find the *original* renditions for many key songs, including "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Rocky Mountain High", "Sunshine On My Shoulders", "Calypso", "Shanghai Breeze", and so on.

I have listened to newer renditions. I won't say they hurt ... but the original is often the best - and this album will not disappoint you.

        4 out of 5 stars Thank god he's a country boy........2004-09-07

If you haven't noticed, there's about twenty "John Denver" collections out there. I ended up with this one for a few reasons. It's not a skimpy budget collection, or a 2-disc bloated one, but a full 18 track one that includes nearly every great moment of his. Included are the hits "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Rocky Mountain High", and "Sunshine On My Shoulders". Plus this has songs the "Greatest Hits" does not, like "Sweet Surrender", "Annie's Song", and "Thank God I'm A Country Boy". Also here is "Calypso" and "Back Home Again". There's a few missing tracks of course, like "Leaving On A Jet Plane", but overall this is the best single disc collection I've seen, and it should give you that "Rocky Mountain High" you've been looking for.

        5 out of 5 stars A Modern-Day Troubadour.......2002-12-15

John Denver had a gift for writing music that straddled three genres, pop, folk and country. Sometimes veering more strongly into one of the other, he managed to stay pretty close to center. This collection give you a flavor of all three, and is the best single collection of John Denver that I have seen.

John Denver's songs are strongly acoustic, and frequently feature his voice. He was a modern-day troubadour, and was very, very good at it. His music was always melodic, and often reflected his love of wild places and his desire that they should be protected. When his songs weren't reflecting stories of the outdoors, he was singing about his wife and his love of life. This collection fully represents the range of his interests and well celebrates the abilities of a man who was surely one of the best songwriters of the 70s, and perhaps one of the best of the latter half of the 20th century.

The always inspiring "Rocky Mountain High" has elements of pop, folk and country, and perhaps is most exemplary of his ability. But this CD covers other songs that span an incredible range. "Annie's Song" is a love song written for his first wife. "Sunshine on My Shoulders" is a folk ballad, but could be pop, and has enough country elements to belong there as well. A beautiful celebration of being outdoors and being alive. "Calypso" was written in admiration of the work of Jacques Cousteau and the men of the research ship Calypso and their work in studying the waters of the world. These are but a few of the songs on this CD. The others are just as good or better.

The last two songs of this album are a poignant finish to a work that is the best chronicle to date of John Denver. "I Want to Live" expresses John Denver's love of life and freedom. "Shanghai Breezes" is a song of separation, and in a way expresses that though John is now far away, with his music he will always be near to us.

I have always enjoyed John Denver's music, from his earliest appearances to now. It wasn't until I started reviewing his albums that I realized what a true artist he was and the great ability he had. As one lists the types of music and the styles available to a singer, there comes one that is much more rare than times of old, and that is the style of a troubadour. John Denver was surely a modern-day troubadour, and his loss is a loss to all of us. John still lives on through his music, and this wonderful collection is a great starting point for someone wanting to enjoy his art.

        5 out of 5 stars A worthy introduction to John Denver's music.......2002-09-09

John Denver, one the most popular musicians of the 1970's, was a prolific songwriter. His discography speaks for itself. Denver wrote and performed so many great tunes that any attempt to identify the most significant songs over his career and reduce them to one compact disc is a challenge. VH1's "Behind the Music" is known for such challenges, however, and while you may not agree with the selection of every one of the 18 songs on this disc, you have to admit that VH1 has assembled a pretty good list of pivotal John Denver songs.

This album is a wonderful sampling of the majestic, soaring, and inspirational music John Denver made. Denver's stellar songwriting is at the heart of each of these songs, which consist primarily of straightforward melodies, traditional instrumentation, and heart-felt, poetic lyrics. Denver's lyrics are so universal to the human experience that anyone can find something on this album that will strike a chord within them.

It still kills me that John Denver died in that plane crash five years ago. His music was a gift to all of us. We're lucky that we can still enjoy his masterwork through recorded music. Many of John Denver's best songs never made it as hit singles and remain relatively unknown on old albums. But if you want a good sampling of music from one of the greatest contemporary songwriters in America, check out this album. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Mood Setter.......2002-03-07

I have found John Denver to be perfect mood music to unwind after a stressful day. I admit I wasb't very familiar with his music before getting this CD, but I felt compelled to get it after hearing "Looking for Space." I'm still enamored with that song, but there is so much more here.

I never really paid attention to his lyrics before, but noe I realize how deep and moving they are. As a Southerner, I feel his affection for West Virginia in "Country Roads" and his love songs can frankly rip your heart out.

The only frawback is that "Leaving on a Jetplane" is absent. It seems odd for such a famous song to not be included. Despite this, This volume is a fantastic assortment of John Denver's best, execellently recorded.
