Strong Heart

Editorial Reviews

Anyone with a voice and heart as soulful as Patty Loveless is incapable of making a bad record. Her low-down vocals on her own "You Don't Get No More" are bound to turn some so-called blues singers green with envy, and if you don't get a little misty behind her rendition of Matraca Berg's "My Heart Will Never Break This Way Again," check your pulse. Berg's ballad is a prime example of how Nashville at its best continues to turn out excellent new twists on old themes. Unfortunately many of the tunes on Strong Heart sound more like old twists on old themes. In a town that boasts a slew of brilliant songwriters--Buddy and Julie Miller, Steve Earle, and Rodney Crowell to name a few--it is hard to believe that these are the best tunes Loveless and producer Emory Gordy could find. Strong Heart is by no means a bad record, but after a three-year wait both Loveless and her fans deserve a better one. --Michael Ross

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing musical experience.......2005-12-23

Adrina writes, sings, and plays melodic meaningful songs. She plays a grand piano sounding keyboard with appropriate backup. Each song has a little different feel to it, but all are refreshing. I listen to them almost every day. You are in for a real uplifting musical experience. I'm an old fan, 71 years old, but no matter whether you're young or old you will love this album.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have to Your Music Collection!!!.......2005-12-23

There are many ways that love rises to the surface in our lives. It can come disguised as questions and as answers, as both comfort and discomfort--- often simultaneously. The essential elements that fill in the spaces between the beats of the heart are not only in dreams and fairytales, but in real life in all of its messy, yet perfect glory. Adrina Thorpe captures this beauty, beautifully.

The album "Elusive" is a very impressive first effort. Adrina's pristine vocals and intricate piano work yield numerous memorable tracks, including the opening "Fly Fly Fly" and the popular "Round the Bend". Her youthful romanticism is perhaps captured best in "Did You Think", a catchy tune that is embellished with soothing vocals and sparkling keyboards. This album is a must have to anyone's collection. I promise you will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and inspirational.......2005-12-23

I just recieved Adrina's Elusive cd this morning and have not yet stopped listening to it. I first heard of Adrina through myspace.com and became a fan automatically. The lyrics are heartfelt and deep with so much emotion you can feel it. I will always be a fan of her art of music. Absolutely amazing!!! It makes you feel alive and at ease.

5 out of 5 stars Such a fantastic breath of fresh air. A must have........2005-12-23

I received the "Elusive" album about 2 weeks ago and it is absolutely excellent. I have been recommending her to friends and as well, I'd recommend this to music lovers in general. In this day and age of formulaic corporate insultingly dull music, it is so refreshing to find an artist such as Adrina Thorpe that re-affirms that there is still intelligent and creative life out there. My favorite tracks right now are "More than Seventeen", "Sorry", and "Never Meant". Do yourself and the music world a favor and support this bright new artist and spread the word about Adrina Thorpe!

5 out of 5 stars Elusive for Words.......2005-12-23

Adrina Thorpe's Myspace link was sent to me by a dear friend. After hearing the few songs, I found myself playing them over and over. I just picked up the album Elusive and I am SOLD. I am really looking for the next album. Not only did I get it at the perfect time dealing with issues in life. It has been in the CD player non stop.

Keep it darling and You will always have a fan in me!

5 out of 5 stars Magical!.......2007-04-05

I'm always hoping to find a great album by somebody obscure, and waste way too much money buying cds on the hopes of finding such a gem. But this album exemplifies why I keep trying. You have to give it a couple of listens before it really grabs you but then -- wow! About half the songs on the album make me exclaim "Good, here comes my favorite" when they start up.

5 out of 5 stars Heading for Stardom !.......2005-11-04

From start to finish this Cd is full of poetic lyrics, storytelling of happy times "Good Company" and sad times - obviously reflected in the song 'Mother". This author/artist sounds like she has had quite the interesting life already ! Hope this is the first of many Cd's to come - how about seeing this in vinyl someday soon - what a cool record that would be :)

5 out of 5 stars A Gem!.......2005-10-24

A gem! The perfect CD for my car! With a hint of Natalie Merchant, Aimee Mann and Norah Jones, singer/songwriter Martha Berner's "...This Side Of Yesterday" is wonderful from beginning to end. Favorite songs are the infectious "Good Company", "Dear Franklin", the touching "Mother" and the lively "A Town Called Happiness". It's only a matter of time before she's a household name with the adult contemporary/college radio crowd. Heard she's great live too!

5 out of 5 stars I DIDN'T THINK I'D LIKE IT AT FIRST BUT IT GREW ON ME!.......2005-10-15

I really liked the first track "You're so Cool"....and as the CD progressed I thought...hm....different kind of sound but Patty's voice makes it palatable. So I gave it a few more listens. As one of the reviewers posted below the essence is pure country because the tunes (though some of them admittedly are of a pop nature)are produced intelligently enough to make Patty's voice the prime element. Patty is one singer who can pull off this kind of music and not make it sound like 'bubblegum' but country. Its the quality of her beautiful voice and the great arrangements. Its such a shame that a talent like Patty has to take a back seat to those "bubblegum divas" out there who have huge organizations to back them up. ANd shame on country radio for ignoring this gem of a CD!! Patty is second to none and is in a class all by herself....top notch all the way!! Give this a listen and you'll see why it grew on me and why it will grow on you too!!

5 out of 5 stars Best song of the year,.......2004-05-10

Cd contains the best country song of the year, "The Last Thing on My Mind". Patty Loveless has the SEXIEST voice I've ever heard on this song. (the video is outstanding!) And that's no small claim. Jamie O'neal, Alison Krauss, Sarah Evans, and Shania Twain all have their own catchy-sexy/charismatic styles of singing. But I think Loveless has the best classic country voice, since Janie Fricke or even Tammy Wynette.

    5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2004-02-01

This is a really underrated album from Patty Loveless, and it has some of her best material. There was a time, back between 1994-1996 where Patty Loveless was on top of country music, and was winning all sorts of accolades. When she released her 1997 album LONG STRETCH OF LONESOME, it failed to yield a top 10 hit and it seemed country radio lost interest after that. Which is a shame, because they missed the boat on this album, and ones that would follow this one that were truly exceptional.

This album gets a lot of criticism because it is apparantely "too pop". Not at all. The title track, and a few other songs, have pop sounding arrangements, but the heart of it is still country. You look at artists like Shania Twain, and you will see this is definately country in comparison to Shania!

The album opens with the Matraca Berg written "You're So Cool", which would have been a great single. It has a nice sing a long quality to it. "The Last Thing On My Mind", written by Rebecca Lynn Howard, is a great ballad that was the second single from the album. One of my favorites is "My Heart Will Never Break This Way Again", an excellent country ballad that teams Loveless up with Trisha Yearwood and Claire Lynch. Great song!

The first single from the album was "That's The Kind Of Moon I'm In", it should have been a bigger hit but didn't really catch on with country radio. "Thirsty" is a nice duet with Travis Tritt. The title track is another favorite, as is the wonderful ballad "She Never Stopped Loving Him", which is the show stopping song here I believe. So much passion and it's a sad story, but it's great.

Overall, her 2000 album STRONG HEART may not have been as popular as past albums, but don't pass on it, it's a great album with some really good songs that country radio should have heard!

    5 out of 5 stars Versatile Talent.......2002-11-03

Say what you will about some artists being too country for today's radio, but the true fact is Patty Loveless is probably the only artist that is versatile enough to vascilate so easily between the sub-genres of country. Honky-tonk, bluegrass, traditional, modern, pop....she can do it all. This set should satisfy all palates of country music fans. From the taunting start off song to the playfulness of "That's the Kind of Mood I'm In" to the deep storytelling song "She Never Stopped Loving Him", Patty delivers the real deal on this CD. Too bad she didn't release more from this one, because she certainly would have had numerous hits. I recommend this one for all country music fans. Great CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Strong Effort.......2002-09-05

Patty Loveless finally returned in 2000 with her first album of new material since 1997's LONG STRETCH OF LONESOME, which I believed to be one of her best. It was hard not to have expectations, and I admit when I first heard this album it did not hit me like the previous one did, but after a few listens, I really grew to love this album. STRONG HEART opens with the Matraca Berg and Carolyn Dawn Johnson written "You're So Cool", and also supply the background vocals. It's a nice fun number to start off the album. I really like this song, Steve Earle makes an appearance on this track. "The Last Thing on my Mind" is a nice traditional ballad which has a unique instrumentation, very country. Rebecca Lynn Howard and Ricky Skaggs join her on this one. "My Heart Will Never Break This Way Again" is classic Patty, one of those ballads she just tears up, once again very traditional. Trisha Yearwood and Claire Lynch join her on this song, Patty describes it as her own "Trio" song since she loved the sound created by Emmylou, Linda and Dolly. Then we have "You Don't Get No More", an uptempo rocker song written by Emory Gordy Jr and Patty Loveless herself, nice and spunky. The album's first single was "That's The Kind of Mood I'm In", another fun upbeat driving in your car kind of song. "Thirsty" is a real standout on the album, a really beautiful devotion and declaration of love, never having enough. Travis Tritt joins her on this ballad. The title track is a beautiful song and unjustly ignored when it was released as a single. "The Key of Love" is another upbeat number, not a fave but not so bad. "She Never Stopped Loving Him" is a traditional ballad at its best, a nice story song. The album closes with "Pieces on the Ground", sort of melancholy yet offering a glipse of hope. Don't miss STRONG HEART, country radio may have not warmed up to it, but you would be missing out if you missed this one!

    Album Description

John Duke (1899-1984) is one of the acknowledged masters of the American art song. This release of twenty-three of his finest songs will afford lovers of vocal music the opportunity to discover Duke's little-known corpus. Comparison with the musical language of other notable American art song composers (Griffes, Loeffler, or Ives, for instance) reveals an unusually consistent and personal style throughout most of Duke's career, the composer venturing only slightly afield of a conventional tonal practice derived mostly from European music of the nineteenth century. Musical influences on his language, in fact, are almost entirely European; most of his songs have an accompanimental texture unmistakably his, continuing, in a way, the tradition of the German Lied, using poems in English.

Duke often claimed, both in his writings and in conversation with colleagues, to have developed his art song style somewhat self-consciously after having studied in great detail the historical, poetical, and musical contexts of three previous genres exhibiting a marriage of music and poetry: the Elizabethan song, the nineteenth-century Lied and the French mélodie of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His choice of poetry avoids almost completely the abstract in favor of the tried and true themes of love and mortality, themes that most composers have found the most suitable for musical treatment. Duke's music is taken very seriously by those who know his work intimately. After all, about how many American composers could it be said that all 265 songs have a natural feel for the voice, an elegantly matched pianistic accompaniment, a recognizable and personal style, and a musical language that never resorts to false syntax? It is easy to see why American singers love to sing his songs.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Generous Packet of Art Songs by American Composer John Duke.......2006-01-27

Though his name may not be a household word among American composers, to singers the lieder of John Woods Duke are a staple of the recital repertoire. A composer well respected in his lifetime (1899 - 1984), his 265 catalogued songs are the epitome of the marriage of text and music. His musical style never veered from melodic but his integration of poetry with his expressive understanding of the voice places him in the same category with Ives, Griffes, Rorem, Barber, Heggie et al.

This fine recital by soprano Lauralyn Kolb, a former student of the highly regarded Howard Swan of Occidental College and a sought after oratorio soloist and recitalist, with pianist Tina Toglia is a study in musical intelligence. Kolb's soprano voice is beautifully focused and her communication of the texts ranging from ee cummings, Emily Dickinson, Elinor Wylie, Sarah Teasdale, Robert Frost, Richard Nickson, Mark Van Doren to James Joyce is pristine and warmly sensitive. Her collaboration with Toglia demonstrates the way musicians should approach the art song. There are many excellent songs in this collection that could be singled out, but the pleasure of the recital is that the variety selected by the artists is very satisfying for a survey of works by a relatively unknown (to the public) composer. Recommended. Grady Harp, January 06

    Album Description

The latest release from Splinter is by far George's best yet! This well produced and written album brings forth Smith's best songs to date. Hitting you from the first track 'carry me' with power alterna-pop down to the industrial edges from the likes of NiN, and stabing westward.

Having actually worked with George in the late 80's & early 90's, I can tell you...This is great stuff. I always thought George was a talented guitarist and songwriter, but his vocals really give this cd a unique sound...Standout tracks are hard to pick, but I'm really into the opening song and the title track. PICK this up...NOW!
