Sixteen Tons

Editorial Reviews

Product Description:
Tennessee Ernie was a fixture of the country music scene in Los Angeles when he recorded these tracks between 1949 and 1959. This is a collector's choice sweep through Ernie's groundbreaking uptempo sides that featured not only his unique window-rattling baritone but instrumental contributions from Merle Travis, Speedy West, Moon Mullican, and Jimmy Bryant. 25 tracks include "Milk 'em in the Morning Blues," "Country Junction," "Anticipation Blues," "Mule Train," "Shot Gun Boogie," "Rock City Boogie," "Hambone," "Blackberry Boogie," "Davy Crockett," "Sixteen Tons," and "Catfish Boogie."

5 out of 5 stars Southern sludge, like drowning in molasses.......2005-06-26

If you haven't seen these guys live, they are LOUD, heavy, and don't mess around. The opening song on this CD, Bull, is a regular part of their show and provides a good feel for what their music is like. If you aren't familiar with these guys, they are a 3 piece band hailing from North Carolina. There is a lot of distortion in their sound, but not the modern, almost techno distortion a la Rob Zombie, but rather the thick seventies-esque sound more evocative of Black Sabbath. Again everything is distorted: the bass is distorted, the guitar is distorted, and Dixie's singing style is gravelly to an extreme.

As for this CD, it is some heavy listening! Yet, these guys branch out and show off some of the bluesier aspects of their music on two acoustic numbers: Woe's Me and Kira May. The move from the glacial pace of Buzz and Bull to the (for them) quick pace of Lines. Some other sludge bands manage to put together a cd that sounds like 10 different takes of the same song. Not here! There's enough variety to keep things interesting, yet every song is instantly identifiable as Weedeater.

If you like heavy music, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Songs of the South.......2005-03-13

From the gigantic sounding riffs to Dixies smoke seared, whiskey drenched vocals and fuzzed out bass, Weedeater perfectly captures the essence of "southern metal". Not only are all of the tracks awesome and unrelenting, the listener is even treated to a few unexpected twists and turns (listen to Woe's Me and Kira May for reference). If southern metal is your thing, pick this up by all means!!!!!!!!!! Maximum volume yields maximum results.

5 out of 5 stars southern sludgecore.......2003-11-27

NC's finest have brought it again. Sixteen Tons is sick and dirty, and Dave Collins'(formerly of Buzzov~en) vocals could cut through steel. Definitely heavier and slower than And Justice For Y'all, I HIGHLY recommend getting this, and if you have a chance, go see these boys live.

5 out of 5 stars stunning.......2003-03-10

wow. ths really is sludge at it's best with a nice southern vibe to it. if you like bongzilla DEFINITELY get this. cool sounding vocals with amazing riffs.

I have heard this song from the time I was just a youngster. Ernie Ford is the greatest singer of this song with his deep resonating voice, his other secular songs, as well as his spirital songs. Sixteen Tons is the classic song of all time.

                Album Description

Born June 26th, 1898, in Scott Mississippi, William Lee Conley Broonzy started working in the fields picking cotton and corn at the age of seven. Along with his brothers, he took up coal mining in 1916 before moving to Chicago where he started playing the guitar in the early 1920's.

He first recorded in 1927 and became a hit-maker during the next decade. He enjoyed a long recording career (260 blues songs) up to the time of his death, from throat cancer, on August 14th, 1958. He was one of the few popular bluesmen associated with a sound as well as with signature songs like 16 Tons, and Baby Please Don't Go, which are both included on this remarkable blues album.
