Wynonna never fails to surprise. While anticipating a reunion tour with Mama Naomi Judd, the prodigal daughter ventures further than ever from mainstream country with her fifth solo album. Foremost among the curves she throws listeners is a version of "Help Me" that flatters Joni Mitchell's original with an uncanny imitation. Her album-ending rendition of "I Can't Wait to Meet You," borrowed from pop-soul supernova Macy Gray, sounds more like Rufus-era Chaka Khan. Then there's her revival of the Fabulous Thunderbirds' "Tuff Enough," which has more growl than bite, but features a spoken-word interlude that conjures Elvis in Vegas. Elsewhere, Wynonna seems most at home with a funky groove and a gospel lyric, like an acolyte of Aretha in the land of Patsy Cline. This limited-edition package includes a four-song EP recorded with Mama, adding blues-rock, Western swing, and even a pseudo-psychedelic novelty to the mix. --Don McLeese

3 out of 5 stars Very slick production, but it still doesn't quite deliver........2006-06-20

I was a bit disappointed when I bought this album a couple of years ago. I listened to it a couple of times and forgot it since. Now I found it and decided to give it another try. I still feel the same about it.

It's not country, and it's not quite rock and roll either. It's full of energy at times, and a very slick production, very professional. Considering the other reviews here, this obviously appeals to many listeners, but in my opinion it feels much too polished to be engaging. There's not much real feeling or heart in this album, and many of the songs are utterly forgettable. There are some good ones, but there's way too much filler material and most of the songs sound the same. It starts to get dull after the first few songs.

A Wynonna fan will of course want this album in their collection, and may love the album. But if you get a chance to listen to it in a music store before you buy it to see if this is in your taste, please do so. If you're new to Wynonna and have heard some of her older singles, this may not be what you're looking for and you'd be better off with her greatest hits CD "Collection".

4 out of 5 stars She Rocks!!.......2003-06-10

Throughout the years, Wynonna has created her OWN kind of music - a style that can't be categorized, which is a big plus in my book. The opening song is one of the best, "Going Nowhere", a bouncy, summer-day fun song. I especially enjoyed "Chain Reaction" and "Tuff Enuff", which showcases her rocking side and I especially loved "Help Me", a Joni Mitchell song that is breath-takingly lovely and should make Joni smile with delight. I love that Wy can sing like a angel in heaven on one song and then the next song, she can totally rock out! While some of the other songs are a little weak to me, it is still very much worth your attention if you are a Wynonna fan. The Bonus CD has 4 new Judd songs: "Stuck in Love" is good, "Big Bang Boogie" is also good and both songs are entertainingly fun; but I never could quite get 'into' the other two tracks for some reason. As much as I love the Judds, I just prefer to listen to their amazing collection of CDs from the past rather than these new recordings here.

5 out of 5 stars WYNONNA!.......2003-02-09

Man this woman can rock, I am very new to her music...and I don't listen to country hardly at all.... but this cd is a must have! "Going NoWhere" is the best track (in my opinion)! I want to hear more from her.

5 out of 5 stars New Day Dawning - She's Back!.......2001-07-26

Wynonna Judd's first album of the 21st century is an event in and of itself, but the fact that it comes with a four-song EP featuring new music recorded with mom Naomi (the first such in over a decade) makes it particularly memorable. Wynonna's album continues her trademark mix of country, rock, soul, and a little gospel, with the soul more or less predominating; "New Day Dawning," for example, has a horn section straight out of a '60s Stax/Volt session, and the quietly percolating "I Can't Wait to Meet You," is actually co-written by neo-R&B revivalist Macy Gray. There are also two great covers, a faithful version of the Fabulous Thunderbirds '80s blues hit "Tuff Enuff" (the T-birds Kim Wilson guests on harp), and an astonishing recreation of Joni Mitchell's "Help Me," showing off an upper register that Wynonna has previously kept hidden quiet. The Judds reunion disc is a little low-key, compared to the album per se, but it's great fun, from the pun-filled creation of the world title song, to a heartfelt (but no less funny) psychedelic peace-and-love anthem ("The 60s Were the 90s Upside Down") complete with sitar and backwards guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Solo/Reunion.......2001-07-26

This is Wy's first studio album since 1997's THE OTHER SIDE. On this album, the production is a little smoother and the vocals are even stronger. It's a little more laid back, but there are still the signature rockin songs, the tender ballads, the dreamy upbeat songs, everything you would expect from a Wynonna Judd album. The album starts off on with "Going Nowhere", in my opinion one of the best tracks, a shame that country radio didn't play it more. Hell its a shame country radio practically ignores Wynonna in favor of the pop-country singers. "Can't Nobody Love You (Like I Do) is classic Wynonna ballad sytle. She does a wonderful cover of the Joni Mitchell song "Help Me", very dreamy and floaty in a sense. Wynonna rocks it blues style on songs like "Chain Reaction", "He Rocks" and "Tuff Enuff". She shows the sensitive side on other ballads like "Who Am I Trying To Fool" and "Learning To Live With Love Again". The second disc is a reunion EP for the Judds, where Wynonna is reunited with her mother Naomi, and there are four tracks. The standout is "The 90's Was The 60's Turned Upside Down" which critisized the 90's for being too torpescent about important issues in that era. Its great to hear Naomi and Wy singing together again! But overall, Wynonna doesn't disapoint with this album. It pleases the masses, with something to offer for every fan. It's great to hear her singing again, because she's never sounded better.

5 out of 5 stars Smashing! Simply Smashing.......1999-05-15

It's amazing how some bands (like Kenny G and Nsync) can play all night and leave you feeling as cold and unwanted as a Bum sleeping on Lower Wacker Drive, and others can hold you enraptured in the hollow of their hands with one simple phrase. Cherish the Ladies is definitley the latter. I first heard them on PBS while absentmindedly channel-surfing one night. I only saw the second portion of their finale, but I was caught up enough in this brief exposure to their sound, that when I heard tehy were coming to Milwaukee's Irish Fest, I knew I had to see them. It was by far the bright spot of the day. I couldn't have asked for anything more.

          5 out of 5 stars She rocks!.......2003-08-04

The wait seemed to be long, between 1997's THE OTHER SIDE album and this one, 2000's NEW DAY DAWNING. In late 1999, a first single was released from the album, which was "Can't Nobody Love You (Like I Do)", a lush ballad which Wynonna transcends beautifully. It appeared to be a return to a more symplistic approach to her music, like on her 1996 album REVELATIONS or select tracks from THE OTHER SIDE like "Come Some Rainy Day", which used simple arrangements and subtle undertones through her vocals.

Her 1997 album THE OTHER SIDE was poorly received by critics and fans alike, but it wasn't all bad. While this album did not spawn any major hits, it was received with open arms from fans and critics. The other single on the album was the uptempo "Going Nowhere". This album was certainly going places though. With any Wynonna album, there was diversity and cover songs, elements of many things which fans have come to expect and enjoy from her albums.

She does a jaw dropping cover of Joni Mitchell's "Help Me", her vocals go from high to low almost effortlessly it seems. Another great cover song is "Tuff Enuff", originally by the Fabulous Thunderbirds, a steady bluesy rocker that Wy really sinks her teeth into and remaining faithful to the original. There is also a cover of Macy Gray's "I Can't Wait To Meet You", which closes out the album.

The album features a variety of country, rock, blues, R&B and soul, with soul being the predominant sound throughout the album. There are some quiet reflective ballads, such as "Learning To Live With Love Again" and "Who I Am Trying To Fool". There's some great uptempo rockers which Wy fans have come to expect like "He Rocks", "Chain Reaction" and "Tuff Enuff". There's some soul/R&B on tracks liek "Lost Without You", "I've Got Your Love", "Help Me" and the title track. This is truly a great album creatively and Wynonna sounds comfortable in her vocals, she's never sounded better.

This is definately a hallmark album in her career. It might not have spawned any hits, but country radio has usually been resistant towards her style and her music. The album also came with a limited edition Judds CD called BIG BANG BOOGIE which features the songs "Big Bang Boogie", "Stuck In Love", "That's What Makes You Strong" and "The 90's Was The 60's Turned Upside Down". Overall this album sits as one of her best!

          5 out of 5 stars Wy fan.......2003-01-01

"Lost Without you, "Going Nowhere" are two of the best songs on this cd. She puts all her heart and soul on the cd. It's one of her best ones yet, i been a Wy fan since the beginning of her career. She just keeps getting better & better!

          5 out of 5 stars SHE'S BACK.......2000-03-26

New Day Dawning is the best work of Wy's yet!If like me you thought her last 2 CDs went a little off course, well folks she's back and you can hear the reason why so many of us love this great voice. Wynonna is bar none one of the greatest voices out of Nashville today. Also included in a limited amount of CDS are 4 new song by The Judds. It's great to hear Mom singing with Wy again.A Must have for any real Judd fan. Great work Wy.Welcome Back!

5 out of 5 stars Wynonna expands her range of musical genres........2000-03-12

Everyone who has followed Wynonna through the Judd years and her solo career knows to expect the unexpected from her. Her latest release, "New Day Dawning", goes beyond the unexpected and puts her in the category of Astounding. Wynonna not only hits her classic "sittin' in your living room, singin' a song" country style on the track "Going Nowhere" and her "gettin' down and dirty growling" rock and roll of "Chain Reaction" but on this CD, Wy hits a new musical genre with her beatifully chilling rendition of Joni Mitchell's "Help Me". Her sweet melodies on this song shows a range in Wy never heard through ANY solo Wynonna songs or Judd music. Simply put, her voice seems to just float from the speakers and carry your soul away with it. If it's her gut wrenching ballads you long for, she doesn't leave you short. "Can't Nobody Love You (Like I Do)" can take you back to that one true love that never seems to leave your heart. Finally, Wy doesn't leave her spirituality out of this CD either. Her Gospel stylings shine through with Macy Gray's "I Can't Wait To Meet You". I highly recommend buying this outstanding CD. Last but not least, if you've been a fan forever or have never even heard of Wynonna or The Judds and you get an opportunity to see one of the remaining "Power To Change" tour dates, GO! Your heart, soul, mind and spirit will never be the same and you will be a better person in this world because of a Mom and Daughter making music from their own hearts, minds, souls and spirits.
