Keepers [Live]

Editorial Reviews

Guy Clark approaches songwriting the same way he approaches fishing--if what he comes up with is too meager, he throws it back; only the best specimens are considered "keepers." Fifteen of those specimens are featured on Keepers--A Live Recording (Sugar Hill), which was taped at a Nashville club in 1996 on Halloween weekend. Two strong songs are unveiled--"A Little of Both," a bouncy, witty song about avoiding choices, and "Out in the Parking Lot," a slow, poignant look at the action outside a nightclub. These two are joined by 13 old favorites, including those turned into hits by Ricky Skaggs ("Heartbroke"), Jerry Jeff Walker ("L.A. Freeway"), and Johnny Cash ("The Last Gunfighter Ballad"). They're all wonderful songs, but these aren't necessarily the best versions. Clark is a limited singer, but his voice cracks more than usual on several of these live renditions; this version of "She Ain't Goin' Nowhere" is practically unlistenable. Clark did put together a sharp little band for this recording, but if he was going to make a live album, why didn't he deliver some of his long, droll stories rather than these truncated introductions? --Geoffrey Himes

This journeyman country singer hails from the same East Texas stomping grounds that produced honky-tonk greats George Jones and Mark Chesnutt. Tracy Byrd puts a slightly smoother, more contemporary spin on his twang and has yet to forge a musical identity as distinctive as the aforementioned masters. Yet his expansive, burnished baritone can effortlessly fill the dance floor with feet or your beer with tears. Versatility is the operative word with this vibrant, somewhat uneven 11-track collection that surveys the commercial high-water marks of Byrd's seven-year recording career. With assured confidence, he covers all the dancehall mood swings, from the rollicking humor of "Watermelon Crawl" and "Lifestyles of the Not So Rich and Famous" to the world-weariness of "Heaven in My Woman's Eyes" and the romantic dreaminess of "Keeper of the Stars." Byrd's only sin is that at times he makes it all sound a little bit too easy. --Bob Allen

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nineties country music to dance to.......2003-09-21

Tracy was one of many new country singers to emerge during the boom years of the early nineties. Following the massive success of Garth Brooks, country music was more popular than it had ever been. Tracy's style was firmly rooted in tradition but with a contemporary edge, rather like Alan Jackson. Tracy was never able to achieve the level of consistency that Alan did, but this collection is a fine showcase for his talents.

Although there are some ballads, most of the songs are up-tempo ditties to get those toes tapping. There are two covers of Johnny Paycheck songs (Someone to give my love to, Don't take her she's all I got) and a cover of Heaven is my woman's love, but the other songs are all originals. Among the great original songs here are Holding heaven, Lifestyles of the not so rich and famous, Watermelon crawl and Keeper of the stars.

If there is a flaw in this collection, it is that it is too short. A couple of big country hits (First step, I wanna feel that way again) are missing, but Tracy recorded other great songs too - I particularly enjoy Out of control raging fire, a superb duet with the obscure but brilliant Dawn Sears. The addition of those three songs would have strengthened this collection considerably.

Still, this is a fine collection and if you are only intending to buy one Tracy Byrd album, you should make it this one. If you enjoy Alan Jackson's music, you will enjoy this.

4 out of 5 stars Great singer, slim collection.......2002-01-05

The warm baritone of Tracy Byrd was been a frequent - if not consistent - visitor to the upper echelons of the country charts in the '90s. This hits collection Keepers captures many of his best moments, from rowdy romps like "Heaven In My Woman's Eyes" and "I'm From The Country" to slower, more tender fare like "Keeper Of The Stars."

Omitted top ten hits "The First Step" and "I Wanna Feel That Way Again" should have also made the lineup - particularly the latter, as ballads are in short supply on this collection. At ten hits plus one new selection, Keepers also seems a bit skimpy (most country collections of late have been offering at least twelve tracks - usually more - with two or three new recordings).

The new track "When Mama Ain't Happy" is an uptempo ditty about pleasing the Mrs. It's lack of success on the charts was a big surprise, since lightweight romps of this sort usually do quite well at radio. Byrd apparently did not want to record this song and subsequently left MCA after this album. He landed at RCA where he's recently had a couple of great singles ("Put Your Hand In Mine" and "Just Let Me Be In Love").

Overall, Keepers is a pleasant collection. Yet with a little more effort from the folks at MCA, it could have been great. For a slightly stronger look at Byrd's MCA years, check out the new twelve track Millennium Collection.

4 out of 5 stars Really Shows Tracy's Best Work!.......2000-12-23

Good CD, but where is his recent hit "I Wanna Feel That Way Again" and his classic hit "Walkin' To Jeruselum"?

5 out of 5 stars This is a aewesome cd!.......2000-03-14

This cd is special because its a greatest hits album of one of the greatest singers i've ever heard. Trust me, this cd wont let you down. For example BIG LOVE makes you want to jump around and dance. And all the songs are irresistable, especially LIFESTYLES OF THE NOT SO RICH AND FAMOUS. In other words its a almost flawless cd.

5 out of 5 stars Very good CD! Definitely a "Keeper.".......1999-10-30

This is a good CD that sums up Tracy Byrd's work up until this point. My least favorite song on this CD is the new track, "When Mama Ain't Happy." It isn't bad, though. My favorite songs on this CD are "Holdin' Heaven," "Lifestyles Of The Not So Rich and Famous," and the best song on the album, "Keeper Of The Stars." There are other goodies on the album, such as the two Johnny Paycheck songs "Someone To Give My Love To" and "Don't Take Her She's All I Got," "Watermelon Crawl," "Love Lessons," "Heaven In My Woman's Eyes," "Big Love," and "I'm From The Country." A good album from start to finish.

3 out of 5 stars Some Difference from Hotel Costes 6.......2004-01-01

I ordered this CD after seeing 5 star reviews at amazon.
It very well may simply be a matter of preferences, but I would definitely rate Hotel Costes 6, also compiled by Stephane Pompougnac, as excellent and worthly of 5 stars. However, in comparison, the Saks Fifth Avenue sound is not quite the same, with the exception of a few songs of the same flavour. This could have been intentional to differentiate it from the Hotel Costes series.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Milk Chocolate.......2003-11-12

Picture this: driving down the road in a convertable on a sunny fall day. The wind is rushing through your hair, and the temp is perfect enough to be wearing a light sweater. To the left you see the ocean, and you get a big ol' smile on your face. That's what listening to this CD is like. Far better than the previous Costes albums (which, if you know them, is saying TONS), this album delivers on all fronts. Not only does it present seemless jazz tunes with full vocals (track 4's "hoping"), but it also let's you get funky on more than one occasion. This is the definitive collection of electro-jazz-blah blah blah... get it! And yes, it's kind of cheesy that it's marketed through a department store, but who cares... you can't see the cover when it's playing in your convertable!

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2003-07-17

Well, I am a HUGE fan of Stephane Pompougnac and this album is, in my opinion, fantastic, just like the costes series. He doesn't disappoint. I especially love tracks 5-8, but really all the tracks are good, and different in their own way. Way cool!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection in the Costes Tradition.......2003-07-01

Stephane is a talented DJ and his compilations are not limited to those released as Hotel Costes collections . If you know the Costes series, this is an excellent addition to your music library.

It's a Costes series but with a different name, but the music are always the same : good music!.Messieur Pompougnac here again make well his business. 14 traks without one to skip. 5 out of 5 stars A "LIVE" masterpiece.......2004-12-04

This CD is an ablolute "must have" for fans of Texas music and/or Guy Clark. If you are not a fan of either now, you will be a fan of both after listening to "Keepers." You will understand why native as well as naturalized Texans describe their state more as a state-of-mind rather than a geographical location. Its sort of a Zen thing. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Not a keeper.......2004-07-11

One of life's greatest joys is a Guy Clark performance. Though I left Nashville shortly before the one recorded here, I listened to Mr. Clark play every dive in town for 20 years, sometimes sick, sometimes overly fortified with alcohol, and he was always the consummate showman. As such, the idea of a live recording was very appealing to me. The result, however, is a little disappointing.

The songs are indeed mostly keepers, and the track listing is typical of a Guy Clark set list. It relies heavily on his first album, with half the tracks coming from Old No. 1, and then a song or two from subsequent albums of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Some, like "Heartbroke", are pleasant surprises I've never heard him perform live. I tend to be a little more sanguine about Mr. Clark's post-1975 oeuvre than he seems to be based on his shows and on this CD though - I think he's written a lot of other "keepers" that are conspicuously absent here, some from the "Old Friends", "Boats to Build", and "Dublin Blues" recordings that were released before the concert presented here, and that usually find their way into his sets.

It is the performances that disappoint in the end, though, not the choice of songs. The songs are mostly tried and true classics. Guy Clark may or may not tire of singing his first album for 30 years, but he has remarkable stage presence and can play "Desperadoes Waiting for a Train" a thousand times and make me misty every time. In general, though, the vocal performances are better on the original recordings. There is something to be said for re-recording many of these songs using the acoustic sound found on Clark's CDs from "Old Friends" onward, or perhaps in the simple guitar and bass form often used in his performances. The electric instrumentation used on some of his older albums has left some of his best material sounding dated. But here, with Mr. Clark not hitting some of the notes, sometimes off-key, most of the time I felt I'd be better off just pulling out Old No. 1. Or that he'd have been better off re-recording the "keepers" in the studio. There are some fine moments here. Texas Cookin', though recorded perfectly well in the studio, is a fine performance, and I can't help but smile at Mr. Clark, Jr. on bass doing the riff from Hendrix's "Third Stone From the Sun" near the song's end.

In short, the songs are keepers but the performances aren't. I have every Guy Clark CD ever made, and I listen to several of them fairly regularly. He is a personal hero in the world of music, and in his corner of this genre, I'll say something he'd disagree with - I think his work far eclipses that of Townes Van Zandt. But this CD has been in my CD player only twice over the years, once when I first bought it and was disappointed, and once today when I was disappointed again. The only good reasons to have this CD are to have a complete Guy Clark collection or to remember this particular concert if you were there.

5 out of 5 stars Texas Without Being There.......2001-10-05

Guy Clark is the unofficial music ambassador for the great state of Texas. His songs are simple and straightforward tackling the always tough relationship department and lightweight subjects like eggs, tomatoes, chili, trains and his home state. ( "Texas 1947", "Texas Cookin" & "South Coast Of Texas" ) He's also intelligent when it comes to a live recording, putting together a great band which includes brilliant sideman - Verlon Thompson. Guy is definitely ON this night balencing songs, stories and laughter. The album literally brings Texas to my home until I can make the next visit. The purists seem to like his first two LP's found on "Essential", the critics pick is "Boats To Build", but the real Guy Clark is "Live" and this one is for the "Keepers".

4 out of 5 stars Great atmosphere.......1999-11-30

The best thing about this record has to be the way it's recorded. Anyone with a half decent hi-fi system will love it just for that.

The small band Guy has gathered for this recording are as tight as can be and even Guy himself stays in control of his fingers...

Great versions of Heartbreak, Texas Cookin' and Home Grown Tomatoes. He's at his best when you can hear the smile on his face. She Ain't Goin' Nowhere is a classic Guy Clark song too. I'm less enthusiastic about some of the slower "moody" songs like Desperadoes (I can never understand the popularity of this one) and he misses out songs from Boats to Build - my favourite album. All in all though, a fine effort.

5 out of 5 stars Texas Pure.............1999-07-21

You yankees want to know what Texas is about? Hear it in his voice, words, and music. If you don't live here...listen to this cd and you'll want to get here as fast as you can.

4 out of 5 stars I wish hiphop could still KEEP this kind of FUNK!!.......2007-02-06

For the follow up to their highly popular debut "Here comes the lords" the Jersey trio pretty much kept the same formula. Funky beats curtosy of Marley Marl and K-Def and lace them with quickfire fun filled rhymes. Its always been the Lords recipe over their 3 albums. Whereas their debut was somewhat harder and grittier this time its abit more polished sounding. With only 11 tracks plus an intro and outro its alot shorter than the 1st. It also shows a more mature and party orientated angle. The 1st full track "Ready or not" is probably one of their best throughout their entire careers. A high tempo beat backed by a funky bassline, manic hi-hats and horns, it sets the album off perfectly. Next is "Tic-Toc", which was the 1st single, which is so catchy that you will definitely be singing along by the 2nd chorus. After the brilliantly funkadelic influenced "Keepers of the Funk" we're treated to a rare solo track from Doitall called "Steam from da knot", a dark hard hitting joint that he tears down beautifully. Then we get the 2nd single from the album "What Im After". As another reviewer said its a beautiful jazzy number sampling Redman's "Tonite's the nite" joint. "Faith" is the 1st official track that the Lords produced themselves and its excellent. "Neva Faded", "No Pain" and "Frustrated" are all dark tracks that show the groups mentality back in '94 with how their lives had changed since they got signed and what ways they've evolved. The album ends with the last 2 cuts "Yes Y'all" and "What U See" and these are the definition of head nodders. Smooth basslines, deep hard beats and horn samples mixed to perfection. Overall this album still hits alot of intended targets even nearly 13years later. Vital ingredient to the mid 90's boombap explosion.

3 out of 5 stars Lords of the Underground - Keepers of the Funk.......2004-06-19

In case you forgot, Lords of the Underground were the ones who brought us the hit, "Chief Rocka". And they won't let you forget that, either. Throughout this album, they refer to that song, never wanting to let go of past glory. They also have a tendency to tell "yo mama" jokes in their rhymes, which can get frustrating as well. But the beats are dope enough to get your attention, especially on the highlight, "What I'm After", which samples fellow Jersey native Redman's "Tonight's Da Night" (he appeared in the video for this song).

5 out of 5 stars ALBUM SAYS IT ALL........2004-06-02

This new jersey crew has a unique style, sick DJ and amazing mc's, what more could you ask? A definite must have.

5 out of 5 stars QUINTENSSENTIAL NEW YORK HIP HOP.......2004-05-27

Yo this album is flawless from start to finish.Marly Marl/K-Def did a great job, this is a quintenssential NY/NJ hip hop.

3 out of 5 stars My favorite Lords album -- again by ignorance.......2002-12-23

I'm not sure why I haven't bought the other Lords of the Underground albums yet. I just haven't gotten around to it. But this is a really good album. The Lords all have a nice flow despite kind of all sounding the same.

Marley Marl and K-Def of Real Live do most of the production, with the Lords handling the rest, and it's all done very well. Marl bangs out the beginning with the piano-laced "Ready or Not," and the bell-ringing "Tic Toc."

George Clinton shows up --barely -- on the mediocre "Keepers of the Funk," and Lord Jazz rolls solo on the driving "Steam from Da Knot."

"What I'm After" rides a sweet horn loop lifted from another Newark, NJ native, Redman. But the Lords put a nice spin on it, rhyming "I'm after the gold/And after that the platinum/Hip-hop and props/That's what we're after."

Uptempo tracks characterize the album, and the MCs' flow does the production justice. This is definitely an album worth picking up.

not all that. decent frenetic overly bongo'd beats with a slight bossa vibe - the melodies are subtly asiatic. i like the monkey cover but i prefer selda and that turk psyche comp over this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Funky Monkey Magic.......2007-01-23

This is a stunning album filled with tight grooves and funky beats. Clocking in at 30 minutes, none of the tracks over stay their welcome. The style of music is not a million miles away from 70's library music but is of a much higher standard. It's hard to believe that this was recorded over 30 years ago. I'm not sure if this was copied direct from the master tapes, however the sound quality is excellent.

Highly recommend, and much kudos to B-music for unearthing and releasing this lost gem. Also, the cover is very cool.

One of the best albums for chill music. Whole CD is very enjoyable. You can play it through, put your feet up and have a nice cold drink in your hand.
Tracks 2,3,4,9, and 10 are awesome. And Track 8 is fabulous!!

    Buy Pleetch!

    1 out of 5 stars don't waste your money.......2005-10-08

I buy music because its got pleasant lyrics, catchy lyrics, a good beat, or maybe I have to have it because its by my favorite band. I don't buy for the artiste content.
Pleetch wasn't for me. Lotion is the only decent song on the CD; its memorable and catchy but it can't make up for the rest. The other songs are weak and the lyrics forgettable. Imagine the phone book read to music, but very very quietly and without passion. That about sums up the rest of the songs. At one point I found myself wishing the volume on my player went to 11 so I could get some life out of this CD! Very disappointing.
Save your money or buy something else.

5 out of 5 stars WARNING: Insane yet extremely addicitng.......2005-07-31

This album is what you would have if Frank Zappa joined Radiohead. Like a freezing shot of Jager, the music is ultra smooth, ultra chill, yet the delightfully wacky lyrics give 'Pleetch' a flavor unlike any other. With at least 8 very strong tracks just get lit and pop this in for instant awesomeness. "Yes", "Epiphany", "Man in the House", "Slippin'", and of course "Lotion" are absolutely amazing. The last third of the CD does end kind of weakly in my opinion but tracks 1-7 and 10 make it way more than worth it. Do yourself a favor and pick this up some way or other-- you won't regret it.

    5 out of 5 stars A perfect album!.......2006-07-05

Wow! This is one of the best records I have bought this year (perhaps ever). In my book this is a perfect album. Each and every song is good and the best ones are extremly good, so no need to hesitate - buy it.

    4 out of 5 stars Awesome........2006-04-05

I'm a great admirer of odd music, and seek it out as often as possible, and if you describe yourself in similar terms, you must definitely buy this CD.

It's worth the price alone for the songs "Yamasuki" and "Abana Bakana." "Yamasuki" has to be the weirdest song I've ever heard. While what sounds like Japanese schoolkids sing beautifully, a karate dude screeches in the background like he's killing multiple enemies. Bizarre. "Abana Bakana" sounds like nothing else on the album, but it's alive with energy.

Inside the CD's booklet, this album is called "educational-bubblegum-multi-cultural-psycho-rock-opera," but I'd just call it an offbeat gem.

My gratitude is extended to Finders Keepers for reissuing this.

4 out of 5 stars kitsch freakout music.......2005-11-17

This album sounds like Serge Gainsbourg conducting the Langley Schools Music Project through a rendition of the Mikado. While such a pairing may sound like a supremely bad idea (especially if there were any cute girls at the Langley School and Gainsbourg just broke up with Jane Birkin), the sound on this album is really diggable.

So here's how it went down, a 70s French pop duo creates a song/dance called the Yamasuki that's a mix of the smooth funk/pop elements of the time with Japanese choruses singing the melodies, a Toshiro Mifune screaming along to the freakout bits, and hints of oriental percussion (woodblock anyone?), the kids go crazy for the single, so the duo figures why not make an album? While the kitsch of it all wears thin by the end of its 12 tracks, each song on here deserves at least one good listen.

Put this in and watch your friends' expressions at the sheer coolness of "Kono Samouri" with its matched wails of some Tatsuya Nakadai-aping Japanese cat and the funky wa-wa pedal. Odds are their faces will show a mixture of confusion, awe, and a struggle with the urge to dance. Give it a shot, see what you think!

5 out of 5 stars For once, the hype was worth it........2007-01-19

I'm trying to be a more educated and wary rare-groove connoisseur. I can recall being burned time and again by reissues that promise you Thomas's but can't even make toast when the smoke clears. So, even though I've come to trust Andy Votel's recommendations a lot more over the past year, I was a little uncertain when I looked over the albums he's putting his weight behind on the Finders Keepers label--namely, this one.

But, ya know something? This would have to rank as my first favorite discovery of 2007--the hype turned out to be worth it. "L' Enfant Assassin des Mouches" is just as twisted, graceful and psychedelic as the liner notes and tons of hipster critics say it is--it most definitely qualifies as the "psychedelic symphony" it claims to be on the cover.

If you need an idea of what to expect, loosen yourself up with some music in a similar vein--music like Aphrodite's Child's "666," the "Fantastic Planet" soundtrack and (of course) Serge's "Melody Nelson." If you can get down with those three albums, this one'll take you on yet another tour through those same trippy landscapes. Votel's picked another gem...check it out.

    5 out of 5 stars Mind Blowing.......2006-11-02

This is not an easy album to review. I don't agree that this is a difficult album. This is an amazing album. I love Melody Nelson, but i don't think there are any similarities, these are totally different albums, don't compare them. If you want something nice that creates an atmosphere to play in the back round don't get this. When you listen to this be ready to be torn out of your present reality and plunged into something you've never experienced. L' Enfant Assasin des Mouches, plays like a genius concept album. Buy this buy this buy this, holy crap buy this. Way ahead of its time. Buy it!

    3 out of 5 stars Difficult.......2006-05-15

Just a warning to listeners coming to this album because of Vannier's association with Gainsbourg (which is probably most people). The music on this doesn't resemble the music on Histoire de Melody Nelson in the slightest, save for some of the choral arrangements. There's none of the funky spaciousness that characterises Gainsbourg's classic album and it's also entirely instrumental which means that it comes off almost as some kind of film score.....from a very bizarre, avant-garde film.

What I'm trying to say is that this album is a pretty difficult listen and offers few rewards for the casual listener. Make sure you listen to some of it before you make the purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Discover more Vannier.......2005-05-17

If you thought Melody Nelson was too short at a sublime 28 minutes, here is the remedy. Not in the Melody Nelson league, so 4 stars, but a sweeping mind-expander of a 1972 album. Funky, soulful, unself-conscious soundscapes. Yeah baby.
