Just the Same

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
"Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" is the first single from Terri Clark's Just the Same, but the arrangement is so close to the 1978 hit version that the song makes her seem like just another Linda Ronstadt imitator--and Clark is more special than that. A far better example of her strengths is "Emotional Girl." From the title, you might expect a weepy ballad, but from the first rocking guitar riff, it's a swaggering challenge to any male who would cope with her uninhibited feelings. Clark is not about poetry, irony, and social commentary; she's about the sort of wisecracking, in-your-face country-rockers that have traditionally been a male domain. When she tells an overeager lover to "Hold Your Horses," the grit in her voice implies that she's not opening negotiations but drawing a line in the sand. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars "I Never Could Do Anything With Half My Heart".......2007-04-16

Terri Clark's 2nd album "Just The Same" is just the same as her 1st album... Absolutly F**ing Brilliant!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2003-10-20

I have all of Terri Clark's CDs. She is a remarkable entertainer. Staying true to herself and not following others in her industry to pop, she continues to show her fans and others just why she is so loved by her fans. Terri is the epitome of womanhood in it's finest form. This is just another of her fine works.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and very enjoyable.......2002-09-15

Terri has achieved a measure of success in country music without ever becoming a major star, yet her albums are always of a high quality. This is my favorite. It has a great mix of uptempo and slower songs.

Poor poor pitiful me may follow the Linda Ronstadt arrangement in general terms, but Terri's version is country, wheras Linda's version was pop/rock. All the other songs are original, co-written by Terri with various others.

Neon flame is an amusing song in which Terri explains to her man that the man she sometimes sees at the bar isn't a threat. It's a piece of fun which (like the man at the bar) is not to be taken too seriously. ...

Terri is more downbeat on Keeper of the flame, in which she senses her man is not that interested in her, but overall, this is a very upbeat album. I find it highly entertaining - and that, after all, is what music is supposed to be about.

3 out of 5 stars Pale Imitation.......2002-07-28

After garnering solid goodwill with her debut, it would only be logical that Terri Clark would follow that set with an album following that blueprint fairly closely, which is what she does. It's too bad that the abundance of just-average material littered throughout fails to distinguish itself as anything other than a hollow shell of its' former self(the former self being the first album). She does start off strong, with both 'Emotional Girl' and her highly underrated cover of 'Poor,Poor Pitiful Me' reminding us of her way with uptempo fare, and the title track is a nice companion piece to the previous set's 'If I Were You'. Unfortunately, we also have dreck like 'Neon Flame' and 'Twang Thang', which are not only less-than-thrilling compositions, but show the Canadian Clark affecting her twangy singing to the point of irritation. Overall, this remains the least essential of Clark's recordings.

5 out of 5 stars It's all just the same is anything but.......2002-12-09

This is the best album I have ever bought. It incorporates several musical styles and really is full of emotion and good old fashioned rock-n-roll music. You have to listen to it to understand. Tina has an amazing voice and it's a shame she's not plastered all over the radio and MTV because everyone should be so blessed to hear her voice. THis album just draws you in and never disappoints.

5 out of 5 stars The People that blast this CD are so Wrong!!.......2002-09-08

This CD has just grown on me since I bought it. Last I knew, this band was defunct, Tina was singing with the remakes of Dubbl Trubbl, and doing a pretty decent version of Susan Tedeschi's In the Garden. This Chick can belt em out with soul. Listen to the title song, In My Own Time, Grey, She's Undone, and perhaps the best song on the CD - No Holdin' Back. I first was introduced to this band as the backup band for a Jonny Lang concert, I had to go out and buy at least one CD. Glad I did, this band was as outstanding on cd as they were live, which I think is a rare feat. This is one of those CD's where you won't find yourself just wearing out one song. I actually like every song on the cd. I don't know why they didnt get as big or bigger than, say, Alanis Morissette. I was a big Tina fan, though and I think a lot more people would be if they heard her music. She changes tempo well, and the gravelly/raspy quality of her voice is not overdone, very natural, and really works for me. She can get very bluesy, or do very up-tempo, driving rock. Either way, her very capable band stays with her well, and this CD is well produced, preserving her gutsy, rootsy brand of rock/blues. If you don't agree with this review, then you are "Nobody To Me."

5 out of 5 stars Funky little cool I like it CD.......2001-02-08

A friend of mine from Minnesota said; "You gotta hear this CD". (Proper accent required, not that Minnesotains have accents) She was right, You Gotta Hear This CD. This is my first introduction to Tina and the B-Sides, and I can only say, I'll be looking for the rest of the CD's. The tune "In My Own Time" reminded me, of all people, of Bob Dylan, but from there is was all unique, and great listening. I am looking forward to more. Okay, well, that's about it, ya know?

4 out of 5 stars Why have'nt they made it big yet?.......1999-05-09

Tina is one of those bands that have been around for so long is still waiting for the recognition they deserve. Their last album, however, was maybe a td bit better than this one. 'Salvation' was a great album all around. This one is great too, but it does not seem to be as consistent. Still, check out the both of them and whatever you do, see them live. Nothing is better than that.

4 out of 5 stars A must Have for any Tina lover!.......1999-03-11

Tina and the B-Sides have done it again with this CD. Its full of the funky "tina style" songs that I have come to love! Although my favorite Tina CD is still Monster, this is also one to add to any CD collection.

Jesse James can sing!No doubt about it..His version of the classic tune"At Last" is among the best ever recorded..In fact the entire album is dynamite..The fact that such a powerhouse vocalist like this records on obscure small-time labels, gets next to no air-time or exposure, and is unknown to all but a handful of fans is criminal...BUY THIS ALBUM...BUY IT FULL-PRICE,so that James can make the leap from obscurity to the stardom he so richly deserves...and while you are at it enjoy this powerful singer at his best...

Who IS this guy? I don't know. Just stumbled upon him. Wow, what a VOICE! Tired of those male African-American soprano-sounding crooners whose singing emotions go only from A to B? Want to listen to a real man for once? Try this album! I was blown away. After years of hip-hop (ugh) and warbling effeminate guys, I finally found some real good ol' rhythm 'n blues, sung unmistakably by a real man! This album'll rock you or you don't have anything left to rock WITH! Yum!

3 out of 5 stars Lozenges for everyone!.......2007-02-02

The singer of this band has one of those voices, ragged and damaged (can you say 'polyps'?), that makes MY throat hurt.

Listening and relistening to this album conjures up the image of a sprawling dinner party thrown jointly by the Replacements and Uncle Tupelo. Soul Asylum is there, Red Red Meat is there. Centro-Matic is there. Many, many other bands are there. This is a popular indie-rock party.

Centro-Matic, though, gets to sit near the head of the table, closer to Westerberg and Tweedy than many of their contemporaries. Not too close, though, because there's something a little off-putting about Centro-Matic... like its flannel thrift-store shirt is clean and pressed while the Replacements t-shirt is torn with beer stains on it.

Make no mistake, though, these guys do rock pretty hard and do have some good riffs, some of these songs could even be considered "anthemic". But their music doesn't come off as loose and fun as it seems like it should. When you get to track 6, "All the Lightning Rods", suddenly you have a singer-songwriter ballad and an awkward quiet falls over the party. Someone calls R.E.M.'s "Wendell Gee" to come down to show them how it's done.... similar melody, better arrangement...

Okay, well, you get the idea. If you like what folks call "alt-country", this album is a worthy participant in that genre, although it's not very heavy on the "country". Were the Replacements alt-country? Not really. By the way, "Spiraling Sideways" on this record conjures up PLEASED TO MEET ME in many different ways. It's a good song, it doesn't try for Springsteen back-row histrionics and it's over in just over 3 minutes. It and "Biology Tricks" are the real standouts here, indie rock gems you don't hear too much of these days. You do hear the thick distorted guitars, the strained and earnest delivery, the cymbals crashing, and so on, but there's something charming here, worth hearing.

I hope the singer gives his throat the proper care as he may not want to spend his 40s and beyond talking in a whisper... I've seen it happen.

    5 out of 5 stars A really good album.......2005-10-05

I first read of these guys in the Dallas Quick mini-newspaper and then heard them on an episode of 90.1 At Night (a program on the NPR affiliate here in Dallas).

After hearing "Flashes and Cables" and "Argonne Limit Co" on their website (go give them a listen...you can hear the whole song), I decided to pick up the album (always a gamble when you've only heard one or two songs).

It was worth the risk. The album is beautiful. It's amazing these guys haven't blown up the charts yet.

i was shopping at Slinky Whistle Bait-a vintage store on the square here in Denton when i overheard three guys talking to the store owner about touring in Belgium. When they were done talking i said i don't mean to eavesdrop,but...i was. What's the name of your band? A clean-shaven blond in a tight red t-shirt asked if i'd heard of them. No. i'm sorry i haven't.-Geez, i was embaressed.-i said if you're on tour in Europe you must be good.He laughed and said that they were trying to experiment with their style and that it was difficult to describe, but he hoped i would like it.
i'm Will,he said and shook my hand.i went back to trying on clothes, but before he left he came over and said it was really nice to meet you.
He was so softspoken and personable i thought he must've played a small part in the group.i had no idea he was the singer/songwriter behind it all.

Quite simply stated, Centro Matic are the most important group to emerge on the music scene since the late 70's. Involved within are many diversed talents who's influences will be felt well into the 21st century and beyond.
One of the best kept secrets in the musical underground scene, Centro Matic continue to offer up masterpiece after masterpiece with "Love You Just the Same" being the latest.
Amazing, Brilliant and Unique amoung the crap that's passed off as music in today's cookie cutter offerings.
Be prepared to become a devotee.............

5 out of 5 stars what an amazing band.......2003-10-19

Every cd catchs me off guard, and thats certainly true of the latest "love you just the same". More subdued than previous releases, at first you could be disappointed. but then you listen to the perfect guitar riffs and lyrics of "all the lightning rods" and you know that once again we have another will johnson masterpiece.

As always, a highlight of each centro cd is scott's piano/violin/vocals ... "strahan" and the superlative "spiraling sideways" (until the sun faaaaaaaalls down) along with what has to be the best drummer around, matt pence....just an amazing band. "Without you" and "silver plate compaints" are just plain beautiful - "picking up too fast" as good as anything uncle tupelo/son volt ever did.

Expect what you wish, what we have is another centro-matic classic and it should be in your library along with all the others.

    5 out of 5 stars Travelin' time.......2002-06-02

On a recent trip to Texas, I had the opportunity to meet & hear
Holland at a blues club in Ft. Worth. I was impressed by his
energy and ability to keep the crowd movin'. He is one man I
want to hear again. His music has become my traveling sound
for many future trips this summer. His combination of blues,
swing & rockabilly are remarkable. Looking forward to hearing
the new CD for release soon.

    5 out of 5 stars He'll have you jumpin'!.......2002-01-29

WARNING! LISTENING TO THIS CD CREATES AN INABLIITY TO SIT STILL! I logged on to buy this CD after hearing it on the jukebox, and was saddened to see that no one had reviewed it. Holland's style seems to be a mixture of blues, jazz and swing, with a lot of rockabilly thrown in....but however you choose to label it, it works. I have also heard this man play live at some of the Fort Worth blues clubs, and have found it impossible not to at least tap my foot while listening. You'll be tapping, you'll be dancing, you'll be jumpin'! Rumor has it that he's coming out with a third CD in 2002....I plan to buy that one too.

      5 out of 5 stars 1997's crossover-club hit!!.......1999-05-22

"Things Just Ain't The Same" was one of 1997's most requested clubland songs. And for good reason. Hex Hector remixes this ballad into a hard-kickin' club anthem. Deborah wraps her vocals around tight beats and lush rhythms, makin' you just want to get up and dance!! With Hex's full length club mix, a radio edit, and his instrumental of the club mix - you're ready to start off ANY party! 5/5

5 out of 5 stars The beat, the glory, the sweat, the rhythm...its all here.......1998-10-29

From the jungle opening to Deborah's lilting voice singing of love lost but not forgotten this song soars over your soundscape like a phoenix arising from its forlorn ashes. It is jungle; it is house; it is sweat in a girls club in Manhattan Summer 1997 at 4am; it's a taste of club heaven in the Pacific Northwest. Buy it. You won't regret it if you seek to support your groove.

5 out of 5 stars A new James Bond. A Great Title song!.......2002-11-15

Gone is John Barry. Here is George Martin. for the first time in James Bond history, the title song is performed by a band. Paul McCartney and the Wings perform the title song which is considered to be one of the best. It charted at #2 in the charts for three weeks. This soundtrack is so full of exciting and intense music. Tracks like San Monique and Snakes Alive are truly exciting. Bond meets Solitare and If he finds it, Kill Him give the listener a mysterious and magical feel. George Martin also includes his own 007 theme. Also very generous about this soundtrack is the nice amount of 14 tracks. A great title song. Great additional music. A new James Bond. It makes a fantastic soundtrack!

3 out of 5 stars Bond music in the 70s - Three and a half stars.......2002-04-22

With the superb title song Live And Let Die sung by Paul McCartney and performed by Wings, one thinks that this soundtrack will be good. Well it is and it isn't.

"Bond Meets Solitaire" is an okay song, with a good tune that is very tense. Then we get into "Whisper Who Dares" which is a tense and exciting action cue, and at about one minute into the song we can tell that this is Bond music for the seventies. "Bond Drops In" is another good song, starting out with a quieted excitement as Bond enters Kananga's hideout via hanglider. But then the song moves into music that was not in the movie. "Trespasser's Will Be Eaten" is another good song, but does not include all the music from that scene, and sounds like it has been changed around a bit. Then we go on to track 14, "James Bond Theme" which is heard in the movie as Bond's taxi follows Kananga to the Filet Of Soul restaurant in Harlem. This has another seventies sound to it.

Despite those good songs there are also bad ones and missing ones. Some of the bad ones are "Baron Samedi's Dance Of Death" and "San Monique". Why are they on this CD? They aren't the greatest songs, and were only used as background music for the scenes where Bond checks into his room in San Monique. The big downside is the lack of music. There is a lot missing, some including the music from the boat chase, airplane chase, and the fight between Bond and Kananga in his underground office/heroine shipping cave.

The music isn't that bad, it is just that it doesn't sound like Bond music. Then again we were changed from John Barry to George Martin music. It is still good though, and receives three and a half stars. Definitely one to consider for bond and music fans alike.

2 out of 5 stars George Martin-NOT John Barry. Good?.......2001-08-08

Exactly how is one suppose to give a good review of a soundtrack like LALD? The music is cool, has a nice tempo and some exciting action tracks. The thing is that is does not belong in a Bondfilm. As mentioned, not because the music's bad, but you know that if John Barry would have composed the score (he has scored 11 Bond films) it would be just that much better. Barry's recognation has always been that he writes music that stands forever. Martin's score is outdated.

The hole soundtack moves on in quite the same tempo, and after a while, when you know what you're going to here next, it get's boring.

That does not mean the record is not worth buying-it most certainly is. In normal soundtrack-standard, it's really good. But it is not Barry's touch of perfectionism...

However, Martin should have returned for The Spy Who Loved Me, when Barry once again was bissy with other things cause the man does have a talent.

      Highlights:

      Bond Meets Solitaire

      Bond Drops In

      Trespasseras Will Be Eaten

The Bond Theme in track 14 is good, but few versions of the Bond Theme is not.

      4 out of 5 stars A great 70's Soundtrack.......2001-04-16

The film is good. Great actor Roger Moore has replaced George Lazemby and there are 6 villains; Kananga, Baron Samedi, Tee Hee, Rosie, Whisper and Adam. But the thing I liked the most about it is the great music. I got the soundtrack just for the excellent music when Bond escapes from Adam and hi jacks the plane in the airport and for the cabride music played a few minutes earlier. Unfortunetly this music is not on the soundtrack but to my surprize, the excellent music that can be heard when Bond is in the hotel room (track 7) and Baron Samedi's Dance Of Death (track 6) is on it. The music may sound old compared to Goldeneye and The Living Daylights but if you like funky 70's music then buy it. I'm also reviewing all the other Bond soundtracks over the next few months.

5 out of 5 stars McCARTNEY and MARTIN Bring JAMES BOND into the 70s.......2001-03-04

Gone is Sean Connery and so is John Barry! Paul and Linda McCartney compose the main title and perform it together with Wings! George Martin scores the rest of the film. This was the greatest departure from the Bond formula as Roger Moore took over the role of James Bond in 1973's "Live and Let Die" and what a departure it was. Pleasantly this is not a bad Bond album. It is a good combination of background and source music, which has a strange cohesive quality about it that really works. The best cuts on the album are `Trespassers Will Be Eaten' and George Martin's 70's interpretation of "The James Bond Theme." Paul and Linda McCartney's main title composition is also very good.
