If You See Her

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Brooks and Dunn are showing an even deeper side to their music--more emotion, more passion, and hard to believe, but even more energy. This wild roller-coaster ride pushes the boundaries of what has become acceptable in country music, blending simple Southern rock with country's lyrical themes, and is held together by Kix's crunching guitar. The duo runs through their familiar mix of upbeat boogies ("How Long Gone") and emotional ballads ("I Can't Get Over You") plus their Reba-shared hit "If You See Him/If You See Her." Though their changes are subtle, they are noticeable. --Paula Ghergia

People
This album, their sixth, is characteristically heavy on honky-tonky, ain't-we- the-good-ol'-boys tunes like "How Long Gone" and "Brand New Whiskey." The highlight, however, is a more thoughtful, calmer track, "If You See Him/If You See Her," a duet with Reba McEntire.

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

5 out of 5 stars ain't no counrty fan, BUT...........2005-10-31

Brooks n Dunn is one exception to my not liking Country much.

this album was on the juke box, in CT, at the bar I bartended. I have many memories with these songs.

go to my old bar and punch in number 7111 and you will hear one of my all time favorite songs ever. "You're my Angel." I could get the whole crowd singing that along with B & D and me. many nights, someone would hand me a buck and say, "Sally, go play me 7111." and I would be happy to.

another favorite was # 7103 "South of Santa Fe." a great tune.
of course, I also like - if you see him, long gone, way gone, new whiskey, and so on.

the music, the words, the tunes, all good. Country lover or not - buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Pale Face of the Southwest Desert.......2005-03-17

The American Southwest. What kind of music would be conjured from this great desert, one with a history of country-shaping battles, landscape-scarring weather, and a desert pseudo-documented so blithely in Hollywood's earliest Westerns from the beginning of the 20th century? Why, country-shaped, landscape-scarred, and at times blithely played-guitar music, that's what!

If You See Her offers the listener a whole smorgasbord of emotions, ranging from the upbeat, albeit downtrodden, How Long Gone -- a fantastic way to begin an album -- to the forlorn, but possibly encouraging title track. These two songs are about the two-faces of relationships and convey it wonderfully.

So where does the desert come in? By far the best tracks here are the cryptic South of Santa Fe -- I imagine a ghost town that only a drifter would know of its whereabouts...and he runs into his past love, still alive -- and Born and Raised in Black and White -- about two brothers with different destinies. This song brings tears to my eyes sometimes.

The art direction here is very good, reminiscent of the old West. But what stands out in my eyes is Ron Modra's photography. The duo in black standing on the red rocks of canyonlands and rivers is fantastic. The photographer met Ronnie Dunn at a baseball game, leading to a short stint photographing other country singers.

While this album is well recorded and utilizes dozens of guitar textures, the selection of songs is only limited by the onslaught of the five somewhat depressing she-left-me tracks. With a run-time of only 40 minutes, I would've hoped for a few more old West anthems from these guys. Their future albums, while possessing songs more complex in composition, sort of drift from this "wild west" country style.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another classic album.......2005-01-17

With the outstanding title track (a duet with Reba McEntire) and four other major country hits (How long gone, I can't get over you, South of Santa Fe and Husbands and wives), this was another huge success in the careers of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn.

Most of the songs here are originals, though Husbands and wives (one of the hits) is a cover of a Roger Miller song from the sixties, which was covered by the Everly Brothers on one of their country albums, Pass the chicken and listen. I wouldn't have envisaged it as a Brooks and Dunn song, but their performance is superb and it deserved to be a hit all over again.

The album is wonderful mix of ballads and rocking country songs, with Ronnie singing lead on most songs. Kix sings lead on South of Santa Fe (one of the hits) and Way gone, both of which he co-wrote.

Brand new whiskey, one of the rocking songs, is my favorite among the tracks not released as singles, but Born and raised in black and white, Your love don't take a backseat to nothing. Way gone, When love dies and You're my angel are all great too.

All the hits can be found on their second volume of greatest hits so if you are only interested in hits, you may be content to buy that and ignore this - but if you want to go beyond the hits, this album is definitely wotrth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars Love It.......2004-08-19

If You See her is a collection of wonderful songs.. Some of the stand outs are Husbands and Wives Ronnie Dunn has once again taken a classic country song and made it his own. Hos Long Gone is another steller hit.. Brooks & Dunn justt know how to hit the mark with their music every time

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2001-09-19

This has got to be one of the very best CDs I have ever bought. Every song on it is just wonderful. I feel like the very last song, "Your my Angel" should have been a chart topper.

5 out of 5 stars Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24

If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.

5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't it be lovely?.......2005-09-26

This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.

The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.

There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.

This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.

This is a fun disc to have.

5 out of 5 stars A Successful Sequel.......2005-08-03

This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Listening.......1998-12-05

Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Title Is Accurate........2002-02-21

I'll be honest - I mainly bought this CD for one song - the new recording of William Finn's "Unlikely Lovers" from Falsettos.

In fact, there is a sticker on the front of the Great Musicals CD which states the following - "Unlikely Lovers from Falsettos is new to CD."

This isn't really correct. This particular recording of that wonderful second act song is new, but the song itself was previously recorded and released on the original cast recording of Falsettoland many years ago. I have also read a review of another (unauthorised?) CD recording made in Michigan of Falsettoland.

Anyway, this new recording is so powerful and emotional, I'm glad I bought the CD.

Readers might be interested to know that the 2001 recording of U. Lovers was made at Joe's Pub in January - the same place where Finn's Infinite Joy was recorded.

To the best of my knowledge, U.L. wasn't performed in the live show. I believe this as in an interview, Finn stated that the only song from Falsettos they were to perform in Infinite Joy was The Baseball Game (wonderfully conveyed by Stephen DeRosa on the CD). Also, in this new recording of U.L., unlike the recordings on Infinite Joy, there isn't any audience reaction. I suspect that the cast made this recording before or after audience arrived.

Loved this new version. It's accompanied by a solo piano. Lewis Cleale has a more traditional male voice (light baritone?) than Michael Rupert's higher, head, some might say "character" sound. Both are more than pleasant on the ear.

Also, on this recording, there's an a cappella section towards the end of the song; on the lyrics "...let's pretend..." Quite affecting.

As for the rest of the album, well all the tracks are gems in one way or another. Particular favourites of mine include -

"Lady's Maid" from Titanic. With it's "up down up" three note/syllable melody structure (millionaire, constable, engineer) it is immediately catchy, and is a great example of an "I'm about to start a journey, so wish me luck as I go" type of show song.

"All The Wasted Time" from Parade. Loved the almost folk influenced sound and the soaring voices; including Carolee Carmello who is heard on Infinite Joy.

"New Music" from Ragtime. It 'builds' beautifully and is a great example of the work of a contemporary song writing team - the highly talented Flaherty and Ahrens.

I suppose the thing is, that many musical theatre buffs will already have many of these songs on CD. However, you many not have THESE recordings - e.g. - the "If You Could See Her" from Cabaret is from the 1998 version, the "Do-Re-Mi" from (what else?) The S.O.M. is the 1998 recording.

If one was being picky, the following points might be made -

For a CD celebrating RCA's 100th anniversary, this collection is somewhat 'top heavy' - 9 of the 14 tracks - almost 65% were recorded in 1992 or later.

    Also -

With a number of the American based performers, even when they are portraying non-Americans, their native accent is still recognisable. This is particularly noticeable on track 14 - "Do-Re-Mi" ("...Here, I'll make it easier for you...") and, to a lesser extent; track 2 - "Prologue - Tradition" from Fiddler ("...trying to scratch out a pleasant simple tune...")

But when one is dealing with material and performances of this level, such points are minor quibbles.

All in all, a very fine CD which has made a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-12-24

Thomas Campion (1567-1620) was a poet as well as a musician, and his songs definately reflect this ability, for they could just as well be read as sung. Philip Rosseter ( his friend) states that his 118 songs were "superfluous blossomes of his deeper Studies," no doubt referring to his Latin poetry , or perhaps medicine, which was his profession. What Campion did better than Dowland, or any other English composer of the day, was to "couple my words and notes lovingly together, which will be much for him to doe that hath not power over both." It is best to listen to them in order of priority to poem, melody and lastly singer. His melodies are simplistic and unadorned by shocking harmony designed to overpower the weight of the word itself. T.S. Eliot was in no doubt about Campion's quality:"except for Shakespeare, the most accomplished master of rhymed lyric of his time."
The performance of these songs by Drew Minter (countertenor) accompanied by Paul O'Dette (lute) is really quite outstanding. I must say that this disc is so much better than Minter's other disc of lute songs "Sweeter Than Roses". His voice had a much clearer tone quality and he did not get 'nasal' or 'edgy' as he is prone to do. He kept his voice light and distinct with very neat diction. When he goes for a loud full sound like Michael Chance or David Daniels his voice is not pleasant to hear. But this album is very good and his emotional investment into each song was excellent. Just a very good LISTEN!!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Serious Drawback.......2006-04-08

Elizabethan Songs. Twenty-two songs by Thomas Campion (1567 – 1620), performed by Drew Minter (countertenor) and Paul O’Dette (lute).
Recorded in November 1989 at Bethel United Church of Christ, Manchester, Michigan.
Harmonia Mundi. Originally issued as HMU 907023, now re-issued as part of the budget-price Classical Express series as HMCX 3957023. Total time: 58’23”.

Thomas Campion was a contemporary of both Shakespeare and Dowland and was a medical doctor who wrote poetry which he also set to music. Drew Minter performs twenty-two of these here with his inimitable coppery countertenor, a voice which is, in fact, very beautiful, but needs considerable getting used to if you are new to it. (Minter sings at alto pitch, but nobody would mistake him for a female!) He is accompanied by master lutenist Paul O’Dette, whose contribution remains fairly quietly in the background. The songs themselves are, of course, in Elizabethan English, making them rather difficult to understand. And this is where this CD suffers a serious drawback: the texts are not printed in the thin CD booklet; instead, there is a note saying that they can be downloaded from the internet, but when I tried to visit the site mentioned (on more than one occasion recently), the server was down, the address unknown. I nevertheless enjoyed listening, but without really knowing what Minter was singing so delightfully about. Campion’s melodies sound to my ear a little “samish”, and I occasionally found myself wishing that the program had been interrupted by a lute solo or two.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant recital of Dowland contemporary.......2001-03-28

There is little overlap between this Campion CD and the similar recital featuring another American countertenor, Steven Rickards, on Naxos. However if forced to choose between the two note that the Naxos release includes sung texts, while this one from Classical Express does not. On the other hand O'Dette is a more characterful lute player.
