5 out of 5 stars Easily One Of The Best Country Albums Of The 90's!.......2005-10-14

Where DID George Ducas go???

Oh wait, that's right. He's too "country" for country music these days, that must be it. Duh, my bad....

Whatever, this cat is still worth hunting down. Both of his CDs are great - this one being the slightly stronger of the two. Hello Cruel World almost carries the CD by itself, that's how great a tune it is.

Thank God for Amazon and alt-country radio stations like Radio New Braunfels in TX - without them we'd never be exposed to great country music!

4 out of 5 stars Very important album for our generation.......2003-11-17

There are your superstars who sell records and have a compomised sound, and then there are artists who really are easy to understand and still have that golden touch. After strengthening his songwriting skills with the likes of Radney Foster and others in Nashville in the early 90's, George Ducas was given the chance to record his own material. He gives a strong start in the snappy country tune "Teardrops", which is rung in by a tangy guitar riff and sets off to impress throughout. His voice doesn't try to be too smooth, or unnecessarily rough, and can easily fit into either a western sound or a rockin' song. "Shame On Me" is a blues infused anvil loaded with a swayin' heavy beat, while "Only In My Dreams" makes a great definition of the word "hybrid". As hoped, Ducas carries the earnest of a western dude, and sways us in a lover's hope on "Waiting And Wishing". If there was ever a country dance hall lit up with while lights and love songs that would fill the dance floor, I would rush in with my fiance on this song. My favourite track on here, and is in my top ten songs of all time list, is the rockabilly sad boy "Hello Cruel World". His voice here really swings into western mode, and the music, complete with wrangler guitar and a weepy 'steel' wanders round on a fun shuffle beat. Everyone remembers his fantastic top ten glossy hit "Lipstick Promises", and should also give the paramount "Kisses Don't Lie" a try: just as good. When you listen to his music, Ducas sees two worlds: both pop-rock, and western. I don't think I have ever heard someone ever see them so clearly, both on their own, and as a fantastic merge. This album is filled with talent, vision, tears, and fun. Did I also mention that he's one of the coolest guys in music?

Watch out for his next incredible album, the 1997 release "Where I Stand".

4 out of 5 stars Another Giant in the Shadows.......2003-10-30

George Ducas has everything to make it as a huge country star....except for the fact that he doesn't have a loud mouth like Natalie Maines or he isn't willing to sell out like Chesney and McGraw to make a fast buck. If you want intelligent, heartfelt country however, Ducas is your man. Every song on this album has an artistic quality in it that has been lacking in country music for much of the last twenty years. Ducas' lyrics manage to come out sounding like an intelligent good ol' boy wrote them. He can dance on the wire between gimmicky "country" songs and real sobbers and manage to come out smelling like a rose. You would think a song like "Hello Cruel World" would get lost in the jumble with the rest of those stupid so-called country songs of today, but it stands out because the lyrics aren't just slapped together to make giddy teenage girls jump with glee. Instead, these songs are written to make you feel for the singer. "Lipstick Promises" sounds like a gimmick -laden song that Tim McGraw might record, but Ducas' delivery makes it sound ten times better than "I Like It, I Love It" or any other of McGraw's cranked out hits.
George Ducas is of a fading stock in country these days. He writes songs that speak to you and at the same time make you shake your head and think,"How did he come up with that?"
Don't blow this guy off as a one hit wonder, he's here to stay, as soon as the record companies decide to start playing real country music again and not "pop with a fiddle in it." If I had to rank Ducas among today's best country writer/performers, I'd have to throw him in somewhere between Rodney Crowell and Radney Foster. If you like either of these artists, then you'll enjoy George Ducas.

5 out of 5 stars Most underrated country artist of the 90s.......2001-08-20

Although George had hits with two of the tracks from this CD, "Teardrops" and "Lipstick Promises," the album never got the attention it deserved due to some breakdowns at his record label. Every song on this CD is a winner and George truly showcases his gift for writing great melodies and lyrics. If you like guitar-driven music, you'll love this record. Favorite cuts are "Lipstick Promises," "My World Stopped Turning," "Hello Cruel World," and "Kisses Don't Lie." George went on to write songs for the Dixie Chicks, Gary Allan, Garth Brooks and Radney Foster.

5 out of 5 stars Ducas standing tall............2003-09-01

One of the best albums that I have ever heard recorded, written and engineered. Most of George Ducas' material is either head on honky tonk country, or authentic hybrid rock-roots music.

His second album, brings us to a larger arena of different sounds in his songs. A musician that's so well crafted with his work, molds so well with the other talented musicians and co-writers, all holding a solid drive, without trying too hard to prove anything, or becoming weird and misunderstood, simply going for what he feels in his words and song.

A fantastic tune that's a lot of fun, is 'Everytime She Passes By'. A dead ringer for summer that is candy for anyone in love, especially newly budding couples. 'You're Only My Everything' has more to say than how lovely she looks, reaching deep into the pockets of a heart. A warm piano and small soft beat bring out the sparkles. The more heavyweight and faster tune, 'Stay The Night' is so musically gripping with a rocket fueled guitar and driving beat, that it becomes an undeniable song. George hoists in great pure country, with the sad song 'The Invisible Man', and continues to sway with a more open shuffle on 'I'm Pretending'. These two are so rich in traditional country, that you realize George is more than an ace of the roots-rock world. Full of painful realization comes the formidable rocker 'I'd Be Lying'. Perhaps the best song done on here, although it is so hard to choose from any of these, would be 'Heartaches And Dreams'. Drums turn to a roll on the bridge before they go back into gear, while vocals with Ducas and another superman of country, Vince Gill (on background), merge with real tangy lead guitar and rythym guitar. 'Tricky Moon' is more humoured and fun, and a tune that makes you wanna dance! 'Long Trail Of Tears' drives far into the night (you can feel the loneliness), while 'Could Have Fooled Me' relaxes the heart that love is here to stay. Thankfully, Ducas is one who is very rich in emotion and words, yet doesn't sling over unusual lyrics. What he says counts, and won't confuse you. George's music is daring, fun, cool, very creative, and from where we stand, well understood. He knows music. Thanks George for one of the most innovative and rad albums ever recorded. And thanks for your self titled 1994 album, which is also awesome. I can't ever get enough of 'Hello Cruel World' !

5 out of 5 stars Fresh, Fun, and Great Talent.......1998-11-13

This album is one of my family's favorite. His style and lyrics are fresh and fun and get us all in a great mood. His talent, which is evident in this as well as his other albums, keeps his pieces from ever growing stale. We look forward to his next release.
