About the Artist
Growing up in the small south Australian town of Quorn, Jedd was first given the gift of country music by his father, who loved the sounds of American icons such as Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins.

"The first guitar solos I ever heard were Luther Perkins', and for some reason that got me excited. I guess that's what got me into guitar playing". When he wasn't listening to music at home, much of Jedd's childhood was spent onstage. At age eight, he won first place at the Port Pirie Country Music Festival. and by age 10 he was playing a custom-made De Gruchy acoustic guitar.

One night on the radio, Jedd heard the Ricky Skaggs song "Country Boy" and was hooked on Skaggs' rapid-fire blend of country and bluegrass. "That was the fastest music I'd ever heard," he recalls. "It was pretty mind-boggling

Jedd had another life changing experience when he heard the music of country rocker Buddy Miller. "I heard Poison Love, and Buddy's guitar playing and singing completely changed my whole outlook on what country music could be".

While attending South Plains College Jedd met Terry McBride. Terry, who'd enjoyed success with his trio McBride and the Ride, did a workshop at the college. He noticed there was something different about the young guitarist. He talked with Jedd after the show and offered to write with him if he ever made the move to Nashville.

Soon after, Jedd called Music City home and the pair began writing. Since his move to Nashville, Jedd has earned the respect of Nashville's elite. His list of admirers is long - and reads like a "Who's Who" of country music. Jedd is beloved by such respected artists as Patty Loveless, Rodney Crowell, Alison Krauss and Guy Clark.

If fact, just six weeks after landing in Music City, Jedd auditioned to be the lead guitarist for Patty Loveless. "I had, heard that Patty was looking for a new acoustic player and singer to do the Down From the Mountain tour. I was already a fan of her music, so I went and auditioned". Only one hour later, Jedd was asked to join Patty's band - and then he was invited to play the Grand Ole Opry the next night. "It all happened so quickly and I feel so lucky that it all worked out like that."

Playing with one of country's most talented and respected singers taught Jedd valuable lessons. " I learned that consistency is possible. Not only with singing, but with the show. Whether it's a small or huge crowd. She always gets out there and rocks every night."

During his days off from playing with Patty, Jedd was busy in the studio with Terry, cutting demos which they eventually took to MCA in December 2002. "While I was at home I got an e-mail from Terry saying, 'You've been offered a record deal on MCA Records!'. "It's still very surreal, just thinking about the whole scenario."

Product Description:
The album kicks off with the up tempo Beatlesque tune "I'm Your Man" then quickly switches gears to the mellow sound of "I'll Keep Movin'" which demonstrates Jedd's versatility as an artist.

Tracks like "High Lonesome," a rolling train of honky-tonk would make Buck Owens proud. He continues rocking with the roadhouse grit of "I Don't Have A Clue," "Snake In the Grass" and "Damn! You Feel Good."

"Time To Say Goodnight (Sweet Dreams Baby)" and "The Only Girl In Town" (with guest harmonies by Alison Krauss) are sung with a soulful yearning guaranteed to melt the hardest hearts. Jedd's former "boss," Patty Loveless, puts her golden touch on the beautiful, melancholy "Soldier For The Lonely." The album ends fittingly with a cover of country rock legend Gram Parsons' "Luxury Liner."

2 out of 5 stars Unsatisfying.......2007-07-08

I was looking for a CD that would help me carry the beauty and spirit of the Shabbat services with me throughout the rest of the week. Unfortunately, this CD doesn't do that.

The CD seems to have very little emotion invested in the singing. I don't feel kavanah in the least. I imported the CD I purchased into my iTunes collection as soon as I got it, excited at the prospect of learning new melodies and reinforcing old favourites; sadly, I have deleted all but two of the tracks, Y'did Nefesh and the Birkot haMazon -- and I kept those two only because I was still trying to learn them. And I haven't listened to either of those tracks in almost two years.

But maybe liking this CD is tradition-dependent. Traditionalists, Conservatives, and Orthodox will be thoroughly unimpressed and disappointed. Reformists, Reconstructionists, and anyone else -- well, I honestly don't know. It seems though that there has to be a better compilation out there than this one.

3 out of 5 stars Hughes Needs Stronger Songs to Be Huge.......2005-01-18

Prime Cuts: The Only Girl in Town, Soldier for the Lonely, All Mixed Up

Hailed from Quorn, a small Australian outback town, Hughes' uncanny resemblance with Down Under's other export Keith Urban is fortuitous. Like Urban, Hughes is also a guitarist extraordinaire and his adroitness for the strings is exemplified in the fact that he single-handed handled all the guitar work on this CD. Listen no further than bridge of Gram Parsons' "Luxury Liner" for the proof of this man's picking. Exhibiting a yearning tenor like that of Urban with a more Bakerfield rockabilly (a le Dwight Yoakam), Hughes is vocally amicable without being too arresting. But the resemblance with Urban doesn't end, just as Urban's known for penning the lion's share of the tunes on his albums, Hughes is no exception. Collaborating with producer Terry McBride (of the McBride and the Ride fame) together with other Music Row greats such as Al Anderson, Tommy Lee James, Jennifer Kimball, Billy Burrnette, and Bruce Robison amongst others, Hughes had scribed over 80 songs. Out of that copious canon, ten made it to this album.

Stylistically, though Hughes has grown up on stone cold country in the likes of Aussie bush music icon Slim Dusty, the songs do betray his upbringing. Despite having work with Patty Loveless on her bluegrassy Down from the Mountain Tour, Hughes seems to have more affinity with current Nashville pop-country than rustic honky tonk. With that said, it does not mean this CD is bad. In fact, there are at least three refulgent gems here. The first of which is the plangent ballad "The Only Girl in This World." With Alison Krauss providing her teary voiced harmonies, pain has never been so poetically gorgeous as when Hughes sings: "You're not the only girl in town/But you might as well be/When you miss someone this much/You shut the whole world out." Armed again with loneliness on his sleeve, the metaphorically laden "Soldier for the Lonely" has a stark plaintive feel augmented by Patty Loveless haunting mountain pure harmonies. Things do get brighter on the lucent "All Mixed Up," a jolly positive love number with a memorable hook postcard perfect for country radio.

Other than the abovementioned tripartite of bijou, the rest of the material is pretty much formulaic Nashville material. The Beatlesque "I'm Your Man" is promising without being too memorable. "Damn! You Feel Good" is as deep as the title suggests. Debut single "High Lonesome," unlike fellow label mate Vince Gill's similarly titled "High Lonesome Sound," is a popish affair that's melodically messy. Radio's lukewarm response towards it cements my point. "Snake in the Grass" is an intriguing tale of betrayal that could work only to be letdown by its pretty average rocking melody. Perhaps the only other redeeming moment is Gram Parsons' "Luxury Liner." Hughes gives an excellent read, but somehow fails to capture the sheer loneliness of the song.

At the end of the day, if Hughes truly wants to be "transcontinental" and establish himself outside the Australian continent, he is in dire need of stronger songs. As much as I love Terry McBride and some of his songs with the McBride and the Ride, Hughes needs a more seasoned producer who may help him nuance the emotions inherent in his songs. Nevertheless, tracks like "The Only Girl in This World" and "Soldier for the Lonely" make me believe that the best of Hughes is yet to come.

5 out of 5 stars Transcontinental...in much need of more attention.......2004-11-16

Although Jedd Hughes is an Australian at heart, his album definitely deserves attention in the American world. His vocal and songwriting ability sets him apart from many other country artists...not to mention that he has so many years ahead of him which can only develop his talent more. Jedd is an artist worth investing in, along with his album Transcontinental. A complete and well-rounded debut album, Transcontinental does a great job of encompassing Jedd's unique and fresh sound. If you don't have it, you are definitely missing out!!!

          5 out of 5 stars Amazing CD.......2004-11-03

Jedd's amazing vocal abilities and energy really show through on this CD. A lot of CDs have one or two really good songs and the rest are kind of lacking, that is not the case here. Every song captivates you and makes you want to listen more. He puts so much emotion into every song and it shows.

This is one of the few CDs I would recommend to everybody. You won't be disappointed if you pick it up! :)

5 out of 5 stars This is a great cd!.......2004-10-16

This cd is fantastic! There's absolutely nothing to say about this that hasn't been commented on by previous reviewers. If you are reading these posts trying to decide if you want this or not just ask yourself one question: Do you want a great cd filled with quality songs, great instrumentals and an amazingy vocalist or not? If yes is your answer, get this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Thunder from Down Under!.......2004-10-10

Don't miss this new CD from Aussie Jedd Hughes. Jedd's guitar work is awesome. This young artist is well worth a listen. All but one track on this CD was co-written by Jedd. His songwriting is sensitive and soulful, with insight you'd not expect from a man his age. Every track on this CD is worth the listen time. I especially love the upbeat and catchy HIGH LONESOME and ALL MIXED UP and the soulful TIME TO SAY GOODNIGHT (SWEET DREAMS BABY). Jedd truly is the new THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER!

I completely agree with the other esteemed reviewer of this fabulous product. This is, hands-down, the finest example of Jewish musical artistry that i have ever had the pleasure of listening to. Keep up the excellent work, NFTY, and I can't wait to see more. Shout out to Kutz!

5 out of 5 stars NFTY, You Did It!.......2004-07-08

This is, quite simply, the greatest, most comprehensive album in the history of NFTY, and perhaps the history of Music entirely, as we know it. I simply throw on any one of these timeless tunes, and instantly I drift back to the days of old. Now I'm hooked, and I can only count the days until RUACH 2005! THANK YOU, NFTY! YOU DID IT! Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2007-02-23

I was really glad that I ordered this CD. My fiance and I are in the process of picking out music for our ceremony, and this cd has been helpful so far. There is a lot of beautiful music on it (a few not so beautiful songs--mostly the voices), as I'm a singer myself, I'm very picky about music. The instrumental pieces are great, and I'm excited to use them as the processional and recessional.
Just beware, the accompanying book is JUST vocal music, not the instrumental pieces. It also does not include every song on the cd, which I found to be dissapointing.
