Wayne "The Train" keeps a-rollin' as the Austin honky-tonk hero struts his stuff in live sessions on his home turf, energizing the dancers and putting a smile on the face of anyone who prefers country music with an old-fashioned kick. Greatest Hits? YESSSSSSSSSSSS.......2007-04-16

Perhaps at the time, these were considered their greatest hits. I've had my LP and CD for a very long time. I can't even remember. I love it. She was like an angel singing with herself. They seemed to adore one another on the TV show. She - so beautiful - and he - just beaming at her.
Maybe it's time to do another greatest hits and call it "More Greatest Hits". Other singers do it. And maybe all of us didn't agree with their first "greatest hit". Hey, you guys out there who do these kinds of things, what's taken so long?

Les Paul is not only a great Guitarist he is an inventor of modern recording technology.
Dual track recording and his use of up to eight tracks made him an music industry icon.

Some Glaring Omissions!.......2005-08-06

I'm a huge fan of Les Paul and after reviewing the track list on this CD, I don't see how anyone in their right mind could call it an "all time greatest hits" collection.

While tracks such as "Mockin' Bird Hill", "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise", and "Vaya Con Dios" among the duo's best loved and best known songs, I find the omission of "How High the Moon", one the their biggest hits, to be unforgiveable. Equally astonishing is why "Dry My Tears", the theme song of Les & Mary's 50s radio show, and "Cryin'", arguably the best song Mary Ford has ever sung, were excluded. I would much rather have had those tracks included in the disc than the cover version of Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz", and the ersatz "Meet Mr. Callaghan". It's also hard to understand why the only Les Paul solo instrumental track on this disc is "Bye Bye Blues". "Lover", the song that propelled Les into the spotlight, and "Nola", a song that enjoyed worldwide popularity, were inexplicably left out.

While this is a decent collection of the work of Les Paul and Mary Ford, it is definitely NOT their all time greatest hits. The record label ought to be sued for false advertising.

Refreshing!.......2004-12-31

I've just discovered this pair, and I'm so sorry I haven't heard them until now. Being a jazz vocalist, I'm always looking for challenging material. I have a few CDs in this genre, but the styling, and caliber of the musicians puts my other CDs to shame. I suspect k.d. lang has borrowed styling from the likes of Mary Ford, as their voices seem to lilt in the same fashion. Les Paul's ability makes me wonder if there are more than two or three guitars playing simultaneously. Many of these cuts are very subtle in their exhibition of complicated material. For those so inclined to listen, it's an auditory adventure.

The popular tracks.......2006-09-29

Many greatest hits compilations by current bands are worthwhile because they owed their success to radio and their best work was released to radio. "Greatest hits" does not always equate with "best of" and this compilation is an excellent example of that. Many of these songs I truly enjoy. Do many songs better than "What A Wonderful World" exist? The man owns "Hello Dolly" and "Mack the Knife," and "La Vie en Rose" is a timeless, beautiful song. However, it is difficult to fathom songs such as "Skokiaan," "The Dummy Song" and "Chloe" were ever hits. They aren't especially good songs and I assume MCA included them because they lacked rights to better material. I agree with the reviewers, who have directed readers to other Satchmo releases. In addition to those recommendations, the one I would suggest is the "Jazz `Round Midnight" series release, simply titled "Louis Armstrong." "All-Time Greatest Hits" isn't a terrible CD, though it does not give a non-fan an idea of just how great some of Mr. Armstrong's music is.

This cd has all my favorites! I love Louis, and all his cheesy, but happy songs. It's good car music, and backround music for when your working or eating. I LOVE IT!

Cookie Cutter Commercial.......2006-02-13

I have not listened to this CD. I must agree with another reviewer that Satchel Mouth is one of our lasting cultural icons. There's no need to talk about his-- I was about to say "mastery of the music," but it's more about soul than mastery. The music was just there. My comments have to do with the music selection. These cuts are his greatest hits all right, they're pleasant and enjoyable etc. They are AM Radio Hits on a Disc! If you love Louis' music, I encourage you to call up "Ambassador Satch" and listen to a few of those cuts, too. That music or his "W.C. Handy" disc and some others tell the tale of his music better than Mack the Knife, much as I--and you, no doubt--enjoy it. Give them a spin and enjoy the real roots of Louis. Even the re-mastered "Original Hot Five" and "Hot Seven" discs--cut in the 20s--are great. You might like these "not for everybody" less commercial discs even better!

There's no one like him but this is just a small slice of the man. Next time I'll be looking for a larger perspective. It's ok, the sound is no great shakes but no music collection is complete without an Satch cd.

Louis Armstrong is one of the greats. He practically invented New Orleans jazz (and now with Katrina, we think about how special this music is). This album has all the best tunes. "What a Wonderful World"- his classic. I like his "Blueberry Hill" even better than Fats Domino's (Or Richie Cunningham's)
This is just great music, especially if you are entertaining a special lady and want to show your sophistication and your tender side.

Once En Vogue proved that old-fashioned gospel-soul female harmonies could create sparks with modern street beats, every record company went looking for young singers to hook up with new-jack-swing producers. Those efforts bear fruit with SWV, which stands for Sisters with Voices, and the three teenaged singers from New York really do have great pipes, capable of a distinctive sound that can dominate a production rather than the other way around. Cheryl "Coko" Gordon, the trio's lead singer, boasts a great range that allows her to sound tough and sultry in her gritty alto, and romantic and flirty in her trilling soprano. SWV's debut album includes 13 different songs, plus two alternate mixes, and the best tracks are the 10 written and produced by Brian Alexander Morgan, who knows how to create the melodies that all great harmonies must start with. The first single, "Right Here," features a very funky, push-and-pull rhythm track, but the three singers reclaim the song with harmonies that are very percussive themselves but with lots of melody and romantic personality as well. The single, "Weak," is a ballad that allows Gordon to confess her infatuated weakness without ever sounding like a weakling as she hits the beats confidently and purrs in anticipation. --Geoffrey Himes

Great Debut..........2007-03-22

This is a great start to SWV's career but their second album "New Beginning" was their best album to date. On this album they had a lot of smash hits like "Weak", I'm so Into You, "Downtown",and "Human Nature". They had a few uptempo songs that sounded good, but they exceled on their ballads "It's About Time" and "What I Need". All the SWV fans should have this album and SWV is working on some new material so look out for them.

"It's About Time" takes me back to my young days, as a pre-teen. I remember well, listening to tracks on this album, on our local R&B radio station. What made SWV stand out, as a trio, was their great ability to blend different voice types together. They all had lower voices, but Coco, in particular, demonstrated her command of her lovely alto range. This is heard especially on tracks like "I'm So Into You" (with the infectious hook, and catchy melody) and "Weak" (which was later covered by that teen pop star, JoJo---their version is FAR superior to hers, by leaps and bounds). My favorite cut is "Right Here (Human Nature Remix)." This combines a sample of "Human Nature" by Michael Jackson, with their lovely vocals.

These are the types of songs you put on, when you and your sweetie are getting together for a romanctic evening. Just turn the tracks on, pour the wine, and enjoy these Sisters With Voices. ......

For years singer-pianist Diana Krall has been bringing new lifeblood to jazz via her dual knockout talents. And while her later recordings reveal a consistently maturing artist, this 1992 debut album shows that the Nanaimo, British Columbia, native had the goods right from the get-go. In her mid-20s here, Krall sings with honesty, subtlety, and persuasion while playing the piano with head-shaking authority, both as accompanist--she offers amazing asides in between vocal phrases--and as an absolutely A-one improviser. Indeed, it is remarkable to hear her weave her gifts into a wondrous whole. Working with bass ace John Clayton and the superb drummer Jeff Hamilton, Krall presents one winner after another. "This Can't Be Love" is typical, a selection where it is all but impossible not to tap your foot. After a nicely enunciated vocal--she slides into phrases much like Sarah Vaughan--the pianist cooks in her Oscar Peterson-meets-Gene Harris style, playing hip ideas that fall easily on the ear, underwritten by her rock-solid feel for time. "As Long as I Live" is another example of Krall's ability to sing and swing a standard with a nonstop groove. "Straighten Up and Fly Right" is slower and features a deeply bluesy vocal; "I'm Just a Lucky So and So" is equally sultry. Like a Nova.......2007-03-04

Ms Krall is simply the most talented young jazz artist to arrive in this venue in the past 3 decades. This opening entre is a balanced rendition of her brilliant skills as an improvisational pianist and her imaginative vocal stylings, either of which are deserving of the highest praise, and in combination are almost unbelievable. Her more recent CDs and DVDs are more polished, with more sophisticated accompaniment, but this is an up front, powerful presentation of one remarkably talented performer.

Strong Debut.......2006-09-26

This is Diana's first release and I feel it's one of her best!, this is a swinging set of jazz vocals and some fine piano playing instrumentals. While I do enjoy her later cd's, this one has more swing to it then her later ones. If your just discovering Miss Krall make sure you add this cd to your collection!

Unpretentious swing from an upstart performer..........2006-08-01

This offering gives us Diana's first CD, from back around 1992. A mix of instrumentals and vocals, it really does swing. Her voice does not sound much like her 2003-2006 instrument, being a bit rougher around the edges. If you are a fan already, of course you will want it. If you like her more recent stuff, this demonstrates her origins. If you dislike her recent releases, this gives you another facet of a very talented woman. Mainly, this is just fun, and it makes you want to move your lips and your body and sing and dance yourself. (Even if, like me, you can't dance a step or sing a note without screwing it up.)

Great CD - Club Version Not what you Expect.......2005-12-01

In regards to this album, I'm simply going to say that it is great, but I love everything Diana sings. I'm really adding this comment because I am disappointed in the "Club" version that I bought, expecting there was nothing to lose but paying a few extra dollars to buy it that way - I was wrong! The "Club" version turns out to be a "Manufactured for BMG Direct" release and it does not include the bonus track "Sunny Side of the Street" listed here. I may be wrong, but unless it was hidden somewhere in the fine print, Amazon does not reveal either of these discrepancies when placing an order for the club version and I'm not very happy about it.

Just the usual- catchy, classy, sultry .......2005-03-16

This is one of the early albums of Ms. Krall and sets the tone for all that is to come - the choice of tunes, the low-key but striking arrangements, the elegant piano, the mix between longing and bopping. But most of all it is about that fabulous voice that continues to enchant. It is not so clear as, say, Cheryl Bentyne, but its sultriness and throatiness are what we have come to look for and love.

Most of the songs have been heard before (and since) and yet they are worth repeating even from one CD to another. "Straighten Up and Fly Right" is understanded but undeniably affecting. "I'm just a Lucky So and So" seems sculptured just for her in both body and spirit. The other tunes were all gems...a winner.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

That Hebden Sound.......2007-04-27

I recently bought this "Swing Time" CD as part of an eBay shopping spree. (I know, "fool me once," etc.) I saw that the disc had rave reviews here, and so I was willing to take a chance. Plus there were numbers on it that greatly appealed to me. ("Miss Annabelle Lee" by Mike Speciale was the clincher.) Well, I'm afraid the disc has that "Hebden touch"--that tell-tale sound of digital hedge trimmers above the music. Being more confident and resourceful now in the thick of middle age, I immediately ripped the disc to my hard drive and equalized it in Wavepad (though I imagine Audacity would work well also), cutting all frequencies above 4600 hz. I have to say that except for the one or two that were processed beyond recall (with that lovely underwater digital sound), I managed to create a quite listenable disc. No more loud, screeching, piercing digital noise.

Mr. Hebden always finds such delightful, rare records--and vandalizes them. Good stuff here, hence two stars rather than one. Still, I can't recommend this CD unless you are willing to re-equalize out the higher frequencies and you particularly wish to hear some of the selections.

Dance music before the Big Band era.......2007-01-14

ORIGINAL DANCE MUSIC OF THE 1920's & 1930's has quite a few perennial favorites on it, like: "I Wanna Be Loved By You," "Happy Days Are Here Again," "I Found A Million Dollar Baby," "Broadway Melody," "Who's Your Little Who Zis," "You're THe Cream In My Coffee" and "Who's Sorry Now?"

Unlike the swing orchestras of a decade later that had distinguishable styles, there was a certain homogeneity to Roaring '20s hot dance bands, and that is apparent from these 24 sides. Many of the musicians who appear in these older recordings later worked for the most famous 1940s big bands. One example is Benny Goodman, barely out of his teens, who is among the ensemble playing "I Found A Million Dollar Baby." Undoubtedly, Glenn Miller and the Dorseys are here, as well.

Liner notes are insufficient. The album's back cover lists titles and recording dates only. ORIGINAL DANCE MUSIC should please any fan of pre-big band tunes willing to overlook lack of details and some source material in less-than-pristine condition.

You get plenty of bang for your buck with this collection. Try some of the sound samples on this site and you will find out how enjoyable this album is. I found the audio restoration to be quite good.

No stranger to covers, Bryan Ferry has often opted for classics from other times and places. As Time Goes By focuses on music largely from the 1930s and '40s and conjures that era's aura of fine cigars, sateen gowns, and gentlemanly romance. The opening title track summons images of Bogie and Ingrid, and is one of the finest moments in the collection. The swanky versions of Nina Simone's signature "Love Me or Leave Me" and "I'm in the Mood for Love" (which has a faint Martin Denny overtone) are perfectly suited to Ferry's low-key vocals (he's no real crooner, let's face it). His talented band swings with fervor, especially on the upbeat tunes "The Way You Look Tonight," "Lover Come Back to Me," and "Just One of Those Things." There are a number of intimate, romantic moments, but the highlight is Ferry's take on "Falling in Love Again," first made famous way back when with devastating sadness by Marlene Dietrich. I bought this album for three reasons:
1. These old classic songs are great. After hearing them many times for many years I never tire of them
and I always find them romantic and moving; and as with a previous reviewer, they transport me to
another time and place.
2. The band on this CD is absolutely first-rate and the musical arrangements are perfectly matched to the
time period and lyrics of each song.
3. I love Bryan Ferry's unique, not-to-be-mistaken-for-anyone-else's voice. It really goes great with this
music.
As a bonus, Amazon.com's low price for this album was way below what I expected to pay.

The True Jazz Romantic That Is Ferry..These Foolish Things.........2007-01-11

Bryan Ferry to me always symbolized the lone romantic, the crooner who wished he was living in the 20's and 30's in the days of early Jazz.. and I say this as a die hard Roxy fan since their 1st LP came out.Ferry's obsession as a time traveller was always something that drew me to Roxy which were truly in an unclassifiable class all of their own as giants of their day whose music will always hold up even in a hundred years from now.
Fusing the right sonic contemporary details to his solo studio recordings adding a continental feel and ambiance to his amazing output of covers and styles Ferry deals with throughout his solo career all smack of "great" taste and added elegance, no doubt I would say that all future rock historians would add this in describing his music which was always Royal and lush.
Roxy's then use of sax and oboe were pretty amazing stuff adding tremendously to their sonic impact and Ferry is able to add interesting twists even when redoing his homage to his choice of covers.
On this CD covering the likes of Cole Porter,Rodgers@Hart,using jazz and violin,cello arrangements, all convey a limited appeal to the usual rock fan but for those who also listen to Satchmo and Holiday, will all understand the nod to bygone eras and it's greatness.

A surprisingly weak album from a great vocalist.......2006-09-07

Make no mistake; I love Bryan Ferry. I got this album after hearing "Falling in Love Again" (which granted is one of the rare winners on this crooner's CD) at a restaurant. The rest of the CD is so-so, and Ferry's voice wavers surprisingly over some of the note arrangements. Instead of the robust voice that melts thorugh songs like "Limbo" and "More than This," his performance is oddly tinny. Stick to his Roxy Music catalog.

I've just read every single review that appears before mine, and I'm amazed to see so many comparisons of Mr. Ferry's renditions to "the originals". WHAT originals? Most of these songs were written for Broadway, and all of them were written before the first ever cast album, "Oklahoma!", was released.

The term "cover", by the way, doesn't mean what a lot of people seem to think it means. Once singer X pays a songwriter a chunk of money for a song and records it, singer Y can then record the song virtually for free (not counting royalties, of course) and release his recording concurrently so as to cut into singer X's sales. Such a recording, and only such a recording, is properly called a cover. A recording of the song made after singer X's recording has had its run is not a cover. Chubby Checker's rendition of "The Twist" is an example of a cover because it was released very shortly after Hank Ballard's rendition, and with a big push from Dick Clark (who'd masterminded the operation) it quickly swamped Ballard's. "The Twist" became a hit again in 1989, but the 1989 version was not a cover because it did not cut substantially into the sales of Hank Ballard's record, which had eclipsed decades before (nor did it cut into Chubby Checker's, for that matter).

Ad rem: One way to appreciate the quality of this record is to compare it to the Rod Stewart release of the same title. Whereas the Stewart recording ranges seemingly randomly over the years, this one focuses much more coherently on a single decade. It is stylistically consistent, with just a few fairly subtle anachronisms, delicately chosen. A great deal of care, including authorative historical research, obviously went into the arrangements (the ondes martinot on several songs is an inspired touch), but they are nevertheless always lively and never stiff. Stewart's arrangements, in contradistinction, are schmaltzy, gooey, and otherwise haphazard. (He even resorts to "synth strings" on several songs.)

It's true that Ferry is not in posssession of a powerful singing voice, but, in my opinion, the panache, wit, and intelligence in his delivery more than make up for any vocal deficiencies.

Truely Explosive Music.......2007-04-24

The arrangements in this cd are great, both bands are in top form. The addition of the unreleased tracks is a pure treat, sometimes I think some of the alternate takes should have been the tracks to make it on the original release, for instance Jumpin at the Woodside and the Battle Royal, even though it is not as polished as the one that made it onto the original release i feel it has more energy and excitement. The liner notes are top class and have incredible photos of the two day recording session and insightful information

This is an emblematic and historical document for hard fans and jazz lovers; the successful encounter of the most pyramidal jazz artist ever born; "The Duke" joining his creative moods with another giant of the genre: Count Bassie.

I don't have the enhanced version of this disc but it still sounds very good to me so I can only imagine what an "enhanced" version would sound like but I can truly say that I enjoyed this disc a great deal. A couple of great bands combining for just one occasion and this was the result. Highly enjoyable and definitely a keeper! If you are a swing fan and don't have this yet in your collection, what are you waiting for? : )

The collaboration of these 2 giants of their trade shine even on the mix of the CD that has Duke's orchestra playing on the right channel with the Count's on the left..what a great re release with bonus tracks and 36 page illustrated booklet...total pleasure from Basie, now with his idol,Duke, playing as his "guest" on this Ellington release..
We have Basie's bluesy voluptuous sound fusing well with Duke's elegant style on mostly numbers spanning popular band selections from both of these musical giants.
These two great orchestras, weaving amazingly smooth and irreconcilable at times works on standouts from both men.
Jamming together in New York in the summer of 1961
this was billed as a historic one time meeting now laid down for posterity.
Phil Schapp the reissue producer did a great job on adding outtakes, different takes.. under his guidance this becomes one great long CD and one that can turn heads in initiating people to music of greatness from these 2 men and their orchestras that is now overlooked some 50 years later.

Smoking music.......2005-04-19

Forget the history, the background, the drama, the analysis, this music smokes. It groves, it burns, it makes you want to dance, and it makes you want to listen, it provides heat, light, and electricity too.


The two bands are smoking. This is the hotest straight ahead head arrangement swing either group played in the period. This is what makes the bands which were otherwise overly arranged and precision units by the time this CD was made, smoke. The production values on these tracks must have been quite low: get the two bands in the studio, get a minimum number of tracks going, find some tunes that are blues based with standard progressions, and let the rhythm sections bounce, let the soloists rip.

Rip, rip rip rip away they do, and it takes a long time of listening to figure out who is who what is what, by that time you dont care. You just want the beat to go on, the bands to keep wailing and you don't care whether it is Count Basie and Duke Ellington, or Frosty the Snowman.

I am not much on the New Testament or Ellington in the 1960s but you need this groove!
