Sittin' on Top of the World

Editorial Reviews

"El stinko," writes one Amazon.com customer, but to be fair to Rimes, her second album since the surprising debut Blue is more misguided than merely bad. She bites off more than she can chew, and producer Wilbur Rimes (LeAnn's father) tries to force-feed warmed-over Adult Contemporary arrangements and overheated pop fare ("Purple Rain" may be the silliest cover in "country" history), the kind neither Rimes nor the listener can easily swallow. Sittin' on Top of the World may be an advance from the truculent You Light Up My Life, but Rimes's talents are being squelched by the superstar machine. Still, with the right production and right songs, Rimes may yet make a consistently strong country album. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album........2006-06-10

This is an excellent collection of a pop and country songs that just put you in a good mood. LeAnn Rimes voice is so clear and powerful that it will just blow you away. This album captures such an innocent sound and Leann sounds just like a sweet country girl. The tracks "Rock Me" and "Undeniable" are the albums strongest songs and LeAnn does an amazing performance of Prince's "Purple Rain". My opinion is that this is LeAnn Rimes strongest album and is a must for any fan of hers.

4 out of 5 stars Nothin' New Under the Moon?.......2006-04-06

Well, you could say that this album belongs to LeAnn Rimes' best ones. There's a couple of hits: "Looking Through Your Eyes" (from the "Quest for Camelot" Motion Picture) and "Commitment". Then there's "Undeniable", it's a great song. After that the songs are so good, well LeAnn has a great voice, so that's one reason. Surely I could pick "These Arms of Mine", "Nothin' New Under the Moon", "Rock Me" and "Sittin' on Top of the World" but the truth is that this album is a great one but not her best work The last song "Purple Rain" which was originallyt made by Prince is one of the greatest moments in this album. You could say that quantity doesn't replace quality but this album has many great songs.
Stars: Commitment, Nothin' New Under the Moon, Looking Through Your Eyes, Sittin' on Top of the World

5 out of 5 stars LeAnn's Best Album.......2005-07-03

I have 4 of Leann Rimes's albums(Blue,LeAnn Rimes,Unchained Melody & Sittin' on Top of The World).I can definitely say that this is by far her best album as it has a perfect balance of country & pop tunes.& her voice easily beats the likes of Celine and Mariah. This album should have at least been Grammy nominated but oh well. Finally, this is one album youcan NEVER get bored of.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2005-04-22

This CD has a nice mix of combination of romantic and upbeat music. Have been listening to it everyday for past month and haven't gotten tired of it. "More than anyone deserves" is so sweet and the words to "Commitment" is so true.
I love her tone pitch in "Purple Rain"...her voice is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Oldies, But Goodies.......2007-02-25

Bluegrass fans get some good, ol' fashioned foot-tapping tunes on this CD. As the Orlando Sentinel said of the album, "There's nothing revolutionary about the band's approach to bluegrass, but it's a pleasure to hear it handled so skillfully."
I looked up some info on his long career in bluegrass. IBMS shows him starting out with the Stanley Brothers in the mid-50s, working in Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys from 1956-60, and then ending up with Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys for good in 1970. This is his first solo release, but some of the Clinch Mountain Boys join in on various songs with guitar, harmonies and banjo.

4 out of 5 stars A powerful mountain sound that is unadorned & down-to-earth.......2007-02-20

Playing Time - 38:09 -- On December 6, 2006, Jack Cooke turned 70 years old, and "Sittin' on Top of the World" is a celebration of sorts. This country boy from Wise County, Va. was born into a large family that played music and sang in church. After he and his brothers won a band contest sponsored by the Stanley Brothers, Jack went to work as the bass player with Carter and Ralph from 1955-57 (picking up a bass for $15 or $20 from Mike Seeger). After over four years playing guitar or bass with Bill Monroe, Jack Cooke formed his own band (Virginia Mountain Boys) in Baltimore. There, up above Johnny's used car lot, he recorded some albums (on the Wango label) with the Stanley Brothers, calling themselves John's Gospel Quartet. This current album being reviewed ends with two bonus tracks of archived material recorded in 1963 (with Bill Sage, Roy Hoskins, Bobby Diamond). "Let Me Rest at the End of My Journey" and "I've Always Been a Rambler" illustrate what his band and voice sounded like over 40 years ago. In late-1969, Jack went back to work with Ralph Stanley and has been with him ever since. With good range and an ear for harmony, Jack can sing all parts.

On his first day of the job, Ralph Stanley asked Jack to handle the record sales. It's something he's successfully done without any pretenses or insincerity for years. He comes across as a man with empathy, kindness and understanding. His roots run deep to old-time mountain and bluegrass music. He doesn't believe in any fancy stuff or in taking the music "uptown." Jack once said, "A lot of people is ashamed to tell how they was raised and everything, I believe. But a man ought to tell it like it is. Got to keep it country. Keep it mountainous."

What's so nice about this project is that it casts Jack Cooke into the spotlight. He's no longer just a sideman, a guy who was once a Blue Grass Boy with Bill Monroe or the long-time cornerstone in Ralph Stanley's band. Vernon Crawford "Jack" Cooke is now a solo artist who sings on all tracks and plays rhythm guitar on a couple too. Appropriately, his album opens with "Gotta Travel On," a song he once cut with Bill Monroe years before (12/1/58 in Nashville to be exact). And, second up is one of his signature songs that showcases his piercing tenor vocals, Webb Pierce's "I'm Walking the Dog." Jack may have been the first singer to adapt the song to bluegrass, and he is joined by Del McCoury's harmony vocals. Going way back, Del had been a Virginia Mountain Boy before he went to work for Monroe. This "Sittin' on Top of the World" album was produced by Jim Lauderdale who wrote "That's How the Cookie Crumbles" and who appears in the mix of three other cuts. Besides Del and Jim, other friends assisting include Ralph Stanley, Ralph Stanley II, James Shelton, Todd Meade, Steve Sparkman, Ronnie McCoury, Robbie McCoury, Jason Carter, Mike Bub, David Grisman, and Hubert & Jeanette Cooke.

Not so long ago, Jack Cooke was a young musician living in an exciting time and learning from the impressionable Monroe and Stanley. Now, he's the mentor, and his relaxed and enthusiastic singing of bluegrass, country and gospel numbers will influence others. In a sense, he's passing on his genuine, honest music tradition to the next generation and showing `em how it was done. Over the decades, Jack's been approached many times to do his own album. I wish it would've happened sooner rather than later, but I reckon that finally getting it done makes for a good 70th birthday gift to himself, his family ... and us. With abundant rusticity, Jack Cooke's solo album reveals a devotion to a powerful mountain sound that is unadorned and down-to-earth...just like Jack. 5 out of 5 stars A perfect treat!.......2006-07-31

This CD mix Dean's smooth style of singing to astounding music. These two on one CD are a tribute to his early singing career with songs from the era of the 20s. Dean's voice doesn't sound any different than when he first started singing! He had a lot of other great cds like Houston, but this one is for you if you love the old standards.

1 out of 5 stars Pure Garbage!.......2005-05-03

By 1973, Dean Martin was over the hill.. he had gone through a messy divorce with his wife Jeane, his TV show was growing stale and the "King Of Cool" was simply recording ANYTHING, to fill out the remainder of his contract with Reprise records. As any Martin biographer will tell you.. during the Reprise years, most of the tracks and back up vocals were recorded during the day, and Dean would stroll in at night and lay down his vocals. Then through the wizardry of engineering, both would be blended into a complete song. His efforts during the Reprise years were marginal at best.. and these albums.. his third to last, and last for the label.. are perhaps the worst. "Sittin On Top of the World" has no originality. Instead it's just a bunch of standards from the 20's 30's & 40's re-recorded with hokey arrangements by Dino. "Once In A While" goes one worse.. It blends these Tin Pan Alley standards, with a disco-esque type background.. Yuck! This album was so bad it was shelved for five years after being recorded.. I wonder why!? This one's for Dino completists only and should be your LAST purchase, if at all!

4 out of 5 stars Serve with a glass of wine.......2003-04-23

Although nearing the "end of the line" Dean shows he's not out of the game yet. Two solid mid seventies Dino albums on one cd makes this a good value. This cd is worth the money alone just to hear him sing "Smile". The cd is a good dose of old school standards (Ramblin Rose, Almost Like Being in Love, etc) with a of course romantic tender songs that Dean puts every inch of his heart into (I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now, It's Magic, Once in a While, etc). For those getting a little tired with Dean's greatest hits this should remind them why there will never be another singer like Dean Martin.

3 out of 5 stars Teen pop at its best.......2003-01-02

This is what i call quality teen pop.
She comes out much better than Britney Spears.
That is because this girl has incredible vocals!
I bought this while on vacation in California - funny enough got my hands on an import version.
And i was damn lucky. the extra track is the mega-hit written by Diane Warren and already recorded by country fellow artist Trisha Yearwood.
Leann's version is far more pop and definitely chart-oriented.
Diane also provides another great track with FEELS LIKE HOME.
And then you have David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager helping out with LOOKING THROUGH YOUR EYES from the QUEST FOR CAMELOT soundtrack.
What else make this album a great buy? Definitely her covers of Jann Ardenn's INSENSITIVE and Prince's PURPLE RAIN.
But there are also original tracks such as COMMITMENT and THE HEART NEVER FORGETS that are just as good.
Not bad for a countrygirl, looking forward to the next release!

5 out of 5 stars Leann Did it again!.......2002-12-01

I think Leann did it again! She with her too cool golden pipes did a smash up job on this one! I KNOW you won't be disappointed. I loved listening to it while driveing and I wasn't board at all even in dense Seattle traffic!
