Though not as celebrated as many of the artists he preceded and, indeed, introduced to the world, Tom Rush stands as one of the chief architects of the singer-songwriter boom of the early 1970s. Though he began recording in 1962 as a blues-influenced folkie, Rush came into his own later in the decade when he uncovered tunes by a slew of nascent songwriters, including Jackson Browne ("Jamaica, Say You Will"). Rush came across an unknown Joni Mitchell in a Detroit nightclub and promptly included three of her songs on his popular The Circle Game record. The 17-song No Regrets spans Rush's career, closing with a tasty 1999 recording featuring Shawn Colvin. Rush handpicked the tracks for this retrospective and he's reestablished his signature tunes with a care that old fans and newcomers alike will appreciate. --Steven Stolder

One or two regrets (but not big ones).......2007-03-26
I can't add much to the other reviews, but I'll have to second another reviewer's comment that the lushly orchestrated version of "No Regrets" that was included in the record was inferior to the stark, spare version Mr. Rush originally issued. And I, too, miss Bo Diddly's "Who Do You Love?" and wish that Mr. Rush could have found room for it.
But this CD would be a keeper for the "Lost my Driving Wheel" track alone, largely thanks to the incomparable David Bromberg, whose masterful slide guitar slices right through to the heart of the piece; I simply can't imagine the song without it. And thanks for "Urge for Going" ... the definitive version of the song, even though I find Dave van Ronk's take on it equally compelling (although neither version is ever likely to be mistaken for the other).
Can it get any Better?.......2006-07-15
I have been a long time fan of Tom Rush having 5 of his albums on vinyl. It was time to have his most popular songs on CD without the scratches and pops. I couldn't resist spending the money on Tom Rush - Tom Rush and The Circle Game. Now my life is complete. All are 5 stars!
Good Career Overview.......2003-05-12
Containing a generous helping of 17 songs, "No Regrets" provides an accurate career overview for Tom Rush. The disc is chronologically ordered, starting in the early 1960s and going all the way through the late 1990s. Rush started out doing an accoustic combination of folk and blues, and by the early 1970s had smoothed his style to the classic singer-songerwriter pose that artists like Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot would later have so much success with.
The early stuff (about the first five tracks) sounds rawer than the far more polished later material. Rush hit his creative peak around the time that the gorgeously lush title track of this album was recorded, and the song stands out as the best of his career. Other excellent tunes include "Joshua Gone Barbados," "Lost My Driving Wheel," "Urge for Going" and the cover of Browne's "Jamacia Say You Will." Some of the more modern songs are weaker, however, and overall you get the sense that ultimately Rush was creatively about one step behind peers such as John Prine.
Overall, a decent, moderately-priced single disc anthology from a second tier singer-songwriter.
A Folk Masterpiece from A Folk Legend.......2002-11-29
What could I say that others have already said about Tom Rush. He's one of this genre's most profilic singer-songwriters. His music touches you - makes you wonder, makes sense. I don't know where my life would be without Tom Rush, really. Sometimes, when the chips are down (In the dip) I play one of his LP's and my situation gets better. I guess that's the power of music. New fans who come across this post should start off with this collection. It's a fine gathering of songs from his long and storied career. Then, see him in concert. You won't forget it. JG P.S. - I don't know of anyone who could do Joni's "The Circle Game" better than Tom Rush..- Wait, that's his song. JG
Loses Its Way for About Five Cuts.......2002-11-11
This fine collection gets penalized one star because the five cuts beginning with Kids These Days and ending with the over-exposed Jamaica Say You Will by the way over-praised Jackson Browne are very weak, overlong (The Dreamer), preachy (Mother Earth), or a bad try at doing Willie Nelson (Ladies Love Outlaws). And where, by the way, is Circle Game? Those quibbles aside, you get a dozen superb songs here, beginning with San Francisco Bay Blues which sounds like it was recorded in Tom's living room and is all the more refreshing for it in today's overproduced musical world. Panama Limited is, of course, perhaps THE classic train song, with one of folk's saddest final lines, "she's gone everywhere but home." Rush's version of Joshua Gone Barbados rivals Johnny Cash's in this story of a labor leader sellout. No Regrets is, well, No Regrets. You can't hear it often enough. Child's Song is bittersweet leaving home and was new to me. River Song proves contemporary Rush to be as strong a singer and writer as he was three decades ago. I play this CD a lot and so will you.

No Regrets-Leon Redbone.......2004-09-11
Leon always does a superb job, but this is the best yet. Every song is a winner, from the delightful opening "She Ain't Rose" to the the remake of Elvis' "Are you Lonesome tonight?" (which Leon does better than Elvis). The musicians backing him on this are also terrific. Well worth a buy.

Customer Reviews:
This girl has PIPES!.......2007-01-25
I highly recommend this CD...it may not be your thing because it fits into the modern country genre but it is up beat, well produced, and just puts you in a great mood...the first song "Before you" could have and should have been a radio single..in fact I listen to the first track several times before I move on to the rest of the CD which hasn't left my player since I got it...I've always been a huge fan of Kassie's acting as Blair on "One Life To Live" and it's always a treat when they let her character sing on the show but this is by far one of the best CDs I've bought in a long ,long time...it makes me HAPPY!
Not A Joke.......2006-12-23
Not a bad effort at all. More high spots than lows.
I just wonder how many "professional musicans from MI" are sitting in a karaoke bar wishing they had the talent to make a cd instead of just entertaining a group of drunks...and wives.
Keep going Kassie, I have "no regrets" about buying this cd.
Was this a joke?.......2005-04-30
You'd be better off going to a bar and listening to drunks perform karaoke. My husband is a professional musician. I am surrounded by professional musicians. For the love of all that's holy, please Kassie, stick to acting. Take this Blair witch project off the shelves.
By the way, I am a OLTL fan!
Kassie DePaiva's - No Regrets.......2005-03-18
This CD will have you tapping your toes the whole time you listen to it. I loved Kassie's first CD Naked, but No Regrets is even better. It is fun and lively and makes you want to get up and dance. Even the ballads have a beat. Kassie has a wonderful country voice and I look forward to more from her soon. I highly recommend No Regrets to any country music fans.
Kassies cd, No Regrets.......2005-02-16
I just love Kassies newest cd, No Regrets! I especially love Sweet Child of Mine. It moved me so much, I was close to tears! She sings so beautifully!

Customer Reviews:
good sound but sterile.......2007-04-07
This recording has modern sound but everything sounds a bit too easy and too overrefined which makes it ultimately sound slightly sterile. I prefer David Munrow's Susato recording: from the very start you can sense the joy, excitement, slight trepidation that Munrow's band had in playing these renaissance instruments.
Pop music of another age.......2005-10-04
Tielman Susato is listed as the name on this collection, not because he was the composer, but because in addition to being a composer, Susato's primary business for many years was as a publisher of music. This music comes from the book that he published on dance music - it was the only such book he produced, preferring polyphonic music, choral and church music to things like dance music. However, music publishing was a good business, and many amateurs paid to have arrangements done that they could then practice with (professional dance musicians, ironically for this collection, rarely used printed music but rather preferred improvisation and knew their material by heart).
This collection is performed on period instruments of the 1500s, which include violins, viols, rebec, hurdy-gurdy, lutes, guitars, cittern, trumpets, cornetts, sackbuts, serpent, recorders, gemshorne, flutes, crumhorns, curtals, shawms, racketts, sorduns, regal, organ, harpischord and percussion. This particular recording is envisioned as if it were a single evenings' dance and entertainment at court, where dancing was as much an art form as it was a social event.
The music here derives from formal compositions of musics and tunes as well as popular folk songs. Susato is most likely not the composer of most of the music (indeed, may not be composer of any), but put things into arrangements that has a sensitivity both to the dance aspects as well as the artistic merits of the music itself.
The music here is performed by the New London Consort, a group with great experience in early and Renaissance music, under the direction of Philip Pickett. The pieces performed here range from small ensembles (4 lutes for one; regal and nakers for another) to pieces with massive orchestration (cornet, 3 sackbuts, 2 violins, 4 viols, 7 recorders, curtal, organ, harpischord, 5 guitars, side drums and tabors for one!).
This is a bright and lively recording. The purpose is to dance, and in the Renaissance and surrounding times, people danced with vigour, life and spirit! This is uplifting and fun music, the kind that makes one want to get up and move. This recording is simply brilliant from start to finish.
Beautifully imagined.......2005-09-06
I was loaned this CD many many years ago by a family friend. I tape recorded it so I could peruse it at my leisure and grew to love it. Yes, it is percussion heavy, and I don't care. I used to crank La Bataille as if it were my heaviest metal album and every time it makes my hair stand up and fills me with joy. That sounds corny, but it's true.
Some of my other favorites include the suite that has Fagot and the Hoeboeckens Dans (spelling is wrong, I know). I was also loaned the "sheet music" with the CD, a book containing most of the pieces on the disc. When you see it, you realize there are no percussion parts written and no instruments assigned to specific parts with the exception of clef signs. I am immensely impressed by the imagination of Pickett and the New London Consort in their instrumentation and transitions from piece to piece. The sound quality is great, and in the larger moments it sounds as if there is an entire early instrument symphony playing, it's that full. So often, early music sounds timid, wimpy, and small. This disc has a huge range of sound and the highs will elevate you and surely give you the urge to dance.
Unfortunately, my tape is gone (plus La Bataille hdd some missing music due to the recording flipping sides in the middle of the piece when I taped it), and the family friend is no longer a family friend, and now I have an empty place in my musical soul. I wish this would be re-issued. I would buy two.
Finally, I grew up surrounded by amateur early musicians, and my ears have been seriously battered by people trying to play sacbuts, krumhorns, serpents and hurdy-gurdys. While they look cool, many of these instruments are hell to make sound good. I was floored by the intonation, tone, and colors that the NLConsort achieve in this recording.
A perfectly functional music.......2005-06-21
In my point, Renaissance dance music must be considered as a purely functional music : i.e. something to dance to. This implies two things : the use of percusssion and the use of "outdoor" [i.e. wind] instruments.
Besides, as a music fan, I also prefer choices of consorts giving back the early polyphony.
In my point, this interpretation of Pickett [a follower & student of D. Munrow] complies with these 3 requirements. Indeed, one gets in the mood of dancing to these songs.
The Bergeret "San Rocco" or the 11. Rondo are interpreted in a superb way, if I may emphasise particular songs.
Just two presonal "addenda" when I listened to this CD for the 1st time at Kaster & Ohler in Graz, I almost began crying - such a perfect CD.
Since currently I am in the vicinity of Antwerpen, the city where Tylman Susato lived & worked, I "made my pilgrimate" to see the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk, where magister Tylman was the "Kapellenmeister" at that time.
Pity, that this item "out of stock". Fortunately, I have my own copy for 10 years.
Excellent interpretation for music of the period..........1999-05-27
Although recent commentaries feel that the music on this recording has a forcefulness to it, or too much percussive aptitude, we have to remember that this was indeed dance music of the 1500's. The interpretation of the music on this CD is one of perfection for the period and the instrumentation, also, fitting. Since none of us were there, you might want to see the movie "Elizabeth" to get a feel for the period where some of the dances are used extensively... Excellent recording.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Album.......2007-07-05
First off, as a HUGE Sister Hazel fan, I had to buy this CD. And boy am I glad I did. As a musician myself and a bit of a studio and production dabbler, I must say that the production on this CD is top notch, which I have a bad habit of making that the first thing that I listen for on a CD. But once the CD made it past that level, we move on to musical and lyrical content and quality. The difference between this album and all of SisHaz's other albums is this one used studio session musicians. Seasoned pros who breathe most of their air from inside a studio, contrary to all of SisHaz's CD's where they spend most of their time writing and touring. Not saying that is bad, but it gives it a completely different feel and sound. Anyways, I would have to say that the entire CD is flawless except for the song "Under Construction." I think it is kind of cheesy and seems to be just a filler to put the song count at 11. Track fav's are 1,6 and 11, but it was a difficult decision as all songs (except the forementioned) are excellent. If you are a Sister Hazel fan, or just a good melodic, deep lyric fan, pick this one up.
The Right One For Me!.......2006-06-29
I absolutely love this CD. Drew and I grew up in the same town and this CD really brings back memories. Although you certainly don't have to have lived in Gainesville to appreciate the CD, most of what Drew writes about can be related to by just about anyone who has grown up or spent time in the south.
Although a I'm a huge Sister Hazel fan I've found their past few albums a little lacking. Drew's album has the same local band heart and soul that was present in Sister Hazel's earlier releases. If you enjoy Sister Hazel, especially their fist two albums, then you'll enjoy this as well.
(Note for the reviewer below me, track 2 is "A Little Like Heaven" and is in fact the "Where I Come From" song you're thinking of. It's my favorite!)
Where I come From.......2005-11-24
The track listing on amazon says that Where I Come From is #2 on the cd but the listing on the back of the cd does not. I bought this cd as a present for someone specifically for that song amd I am very disappointed that it is not there. Is it a hidden track? Or did someone list the songs wrong?
A Very Pleasant Surprise!.......2005-02-25
I am in the music store last week and I notice a member of Sister Hazel has a solo album. I'm thinking that Drew didn't write much stuff for the Sister Hazel's Lift album, so how good could his album be. Sister Hazel is "THE Southern Rock band" and I have appreciated their honest straightforward music for years, so I look at the Drew Copeland CD and decide I've still got to have it. I pluck down my cash and off I go. Popped it in the CD player and WOW! Great stuff, Drew. From the opening cut to number 11, this is great songwriting, great music and he can even sing. It doesn't sound like Sister Hazel. It is more melodic and very well written. Drew has pulled off this solo gig with passion, honesty and the ability to still have a little fun. My South is one of my favorite cuts as it showcases Drew's songwriting talent and maturity as well as being proud of his heritage. Not a throw away cut on the whole CD. If you don't own this one already, you are missing a great artist in the prime of his musical life. Hoping there will be a few more cuts of Drew's on the next Hazel album. Maybe a two CD set with Ken and the band's songs on one and Mr. Copeland and the band's on the other. The first five star CD I've heard this year!
Great Work.......2005-01-20
From track 1 to 11 all the songs are great. You got your nice love ballads like "Right one for Me" and "I'm Fine" to the more Sister Hazel sounding type songs like "My South" to other rock songs like "Once Again" and "It wont Matter", this is a great mix of songs and really showcases Drew Copeland's writing and singing tallents and that he can venture off and still have great success without the band, i love Sister Hazel you guys rock.....DREWWWWWWW

I was turned on to FRANCES FAYE by a friend and had never heard of her. She's one of a kind: outspoken, funny, sassy, and pushed the limits in her day. Check out her live recordings to get a feel for her witty stage persona.

I don't normally like this type of music but the artist is a terrific song stylist. She was very popular in her heyday and this album shows why.

I am relatively new to the music of Frances Faye, and although some of this is repetitious, she's an unusual singer, and her taste in music was wide. This is a jam-packed set, and is recommended for those who like something off the beaten path. I prefer Anita O'Day, but this is an excellent opportunity to sample a one-of-a kind, perhaps forgotten artist. Thank you, amazon ! You're the BEST !

Gentle on the psyche.......2007-05-17
I keep this CD at work, and my office-mates request it more than any other CD on my desk. The amount of familiar tunes in this collection makes it accessible to everybody. Each piece is performed with grace; it will compliment the more esoteric guitar music in anyone's collection. Kaori Muraji lets each piece unfold like a soft summer night. This album is paced throughout so that it plays gently, and quietly maintains momentum. It makes for very enjoyable listening. Muraji can be a dynamic player. Live, she is very in the moment; typically you can see the music moving through her body and the mood of the music on her face. Always there is a serenity to her. You'll feel it on this CD as well. There are some beautiful treatments of Theodorakis and Takemitsu, but it was also nice to hear a pop tune like "The Last Waltz."
Even though my tastes tend towards more dramatic performances (works by The Assad Brothers or Yang Xue Fei), I've really enjoyed this collection. It would make a good gift item both for the serious guitarist (Muraji's technique and interpretations are impeccable) or the casual listener. Your mother would love to get this CD, especially if she's a guitarist. Show her you love her and give her a copy.

If you saw the movie Tous les Matins du Monde (All the Mornings of the World) you have some idea of the factually obscure but highly influential life of 17th century French composer Sainte Colombe. His innovative writing for viol is celebrated here by virtuoso Hille Perl and her colleagues, who perform on the lute, Irish harp, triple harp, and organ. There are some wonderful discoveries and imaginative arrangements here-and the sound is exemplary. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Marvellous performances. Fine recording........2002-10-15
This is a fine disc. The viol is complemented beautifully by the plucked strings and the whole project shimmers with quality. Perl is a performer of the top rank, displaying plenty of flair without resorting to superficial, excessive gestures. Splendid stuff.
A touch of class.......2000-08-19
Retrouve et Change; retrieve and modify. The title reflects Hille Perl's long-held interest in the music of the mysterious M. Sainte Colombe; retrieving his compositions from dusty archives and modifying their presentation. The modifications reflect a version of his music as might be performed in a court salon instead of in a hut at the bottom of Sainte Colombe's garden.
Hille Perl is clearly a rising star in the Baroque music firmament. Ultimately, she is likely to replace the Olympian Jordi Savall as the foremost interpreter of the 17th Century viola de gamba music. Clearly, however, she is not an imitator. This CD presents Perl's own refreshing interpretations of this genre. Sainte Colombe's music is always rich with feeling [see the film for a concept of why this should be so], which Perl, Duftschmidt, Lawrence-King, and Santana deliver with style and grace. This CD exhibits finely balanced standards of performance among the players, given the original compositions were for a single instrument. This CD is a welcome addition to any Baroque collection. Perl has achieved a triumph in this initial offering. More of her work is eagerly awaited.
Impressive..........2000-04-15
Impressive says it all. Wonderful tones. Creative interpretation.
Refreshing interpretions, played with much verve and emotion.......1999-11-13
Definitely worth listening to if interested in French Baroque musi
My favorite viola da gamba album!.......1999-10-25
Thrilling renditions of this 17thC genius. Sonorous, sensual, contemplative, mysterious & above all, soulful pieces with flawless playing. The hipness of this recording is evident by the Jerry Garcia quote openning the accompanying pamphlet re:magic, bliss, religion & music.

Customer Reviews:
What a steal!.......2004-06-23
This recording of Sutherland's earliest records is absolutely brilliant!!! She soars through Arne and Handel as if it were the easiest music ever written. Whether you love Joan Sutherland, great singing or both: BUY THIS!
Good Early Sutherland Concert Fare.......2004-03-27
This CD is 67:52 in length and provides 20 songs and arias from three live BBC radio broadcasts, as follows: 2 from the Dec. 1958 broadcast, 8 from the Dec. 1960 broadcast, and 10 from the Dec. 1961 broadcast. None are well-known operatic arias; none have orchestral accompaniment; all but the first two are accompanied by her husband (and teacher/coach/conductor) Richard Bonynge at the keyboard. (The 1961 broadcast is devoted to eighteenth century music and is accompanied by Bonynge on harpsichord.)
The selections are relatively unconventional and unfamiliar--evidently a point with the concert choices made by Sutherland and Bonynge--which will be welcome and refreshing to many. As the notes point out, "This group is typical of the creative programs Sutherland and Bonynge would present for next 30 years. They created 15 different programs and appeared together 129 times in recital. . . . [They] loved to rediscover music and made a specialty of reintroducing the world to many forgotten bonbons, such as these." Dame Joan is in fresh, youthful voice (her international career began with her Covent Garden Lucia in 1959, and she was 32 to 35 when these recitals were broadcast) and sings handsomely throughout, often displaying an attractive mezzo-like fullness and warmth of tone. But Sutherland opera fans may be somewhat disappointed, not in the singing, but in the material here, which calls for little of the full-throated excitement, dazzling pyrotechnics, and brilliant high notes of her best opera recordings; this is more modest fare, and it is, appropriately, more modestly sung. The sound is decent, clean, eminently listenable monaural, no doubt from airchecks, but has this small annoyance: it is afflicted throughout with a residual level of pre-echo and post-echo that is clearly audible on a high-resolution playback system.
The indispensable Sutherland collections (apart from her complete opera recordings) are The Art of the Prima Donna (2 CDs, all 1960 recordings) and La Stupenda (2 CDs, recordings from 1959 to 1988); these should be owned by anyone interested in Sutherland, coloratura soprano singing, or simply great singing. This recital, while enjoyable, is certainly not of comparable importance. But if you are a Sutherland fan and would like to supplement her meatier operatic endeavors with engagingly sung concert fare from the early years of her international career, this is a good choice.
sensational!.......2000-08-10
this are sensational. what singing, what a voice. A MUST HAVE!
Bravissima!.......1998-11-30
Anyone who question Sutherland as the greatest coloratura soprano of all time should listen to this CD. She sings with complete control in all the arias. I think that Mozart had her in mind for the Constanza aria. Sutherland before 1975 as a dramatic coloratura soprano is simply without peer in this and any other century. A must have!
