Merle Travis's Hot Pickin' is great and this is an excellent CD for Rock-A-Billy fans, as well as hard core real country. A great cd, that showcases the West Coast influence on Rock-A-Billy and "Real" Country music. A fantastic cd, buy a fantastic artist!

A great review of Merle Travis' talents. Merle Travis doesn't get enough recognition for his early contributions to country music and spectacular guitar play. These CD's are loaded with toe tapping songs. Listen for the great guitar runs in the songs.

3 out of 5 stars False advertising.......2006-04-11

I bought this for Merle's guitar playing and only three out of 50 songs display his virtuosity. He mostly just accompanies his singing. He has a nice voice but his singing style is boring. There is a wide range of his playing, solo, western swing (an adequate group but nowhere as interesting as Bob Wills)and other. I'd give it one star for the guitar playing but figure anyone interested in his evolution in the industry might like the set. There are many songs that I'd never heard before so they are of interest, historically. (Most I'd just as soon never hear again.) Personally I feel that I've wasted my money.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Guitarist, Excellent Singer.......2006-01-16

Here's a two-CD collection (50 songs!) by one of the true Father's of the Lead Guitar. Merle was not only superb studio musician (for the likes of Wayne Raney, Delmore Bros., etc...), but also designed and developed his own guitars. While most country guitarists of his era were faithful to the Martin or Gibson flattop, Merle was into electricity, and people, Merle was a a master of 6-strings. These are original recordings, and England's Proper Records did a fantastic job of presnting these to the listener. While Merle Travis' personal life was less than perfect (kicked out of the Marines, Drug & Alcohol abuse, divorce), his guitar work was spectacular, and reatined his signature sound from the first until last recording. Personally, I dont think another guitarist has had the influence that Merle has had, with disciples such as Chet Atkins and Jerry Garcia. Buy the album, and take a listen.....be forewarned, this is not the PC country of today, with numbers such as "Fat Gal", "I Got a Mean Old Woman", and "I'm Sick and Tired of you Little Darling". If you're a true country music lover, an aspiring guitarist, or want a true audio history of a legend, get this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Most certainly high up in the mountains, sitting on a porch or stomping your feet at a Saturday night get together in the barn.......2005-11-25

A review from Mark Gensman (Ground Zero Sound) written for the 800+ member Nwbluegrass Yahoogroup:

I got this CD in today and rather than take my normal sweet time, I decided to spend some time with it this afternoon.

First off, for you old timey, traditional bluegrass lovers. This is your CD. Even though there are several original cuts on the disc, the flavor is most certainly high up in the mountains, sitting on a porch or stomping your feet at a Saturday night get together in the barn.

    The band is:
    Patrick Walsh on upright bass
    Jamie Dawson on mandolin
    Lynda Wittig on guitar
    Kyra Moore on banjo
    Matt Hooper on fiddle

Kickin Grass is a group that started out backing a cloggers group and has since taken off on their own to great acclaim. They are from North Carolina and from the liner notes are getting popular in the festival circuit. I can see why they would be a great live band.

The CD appears to be a representation of how the band really sounds. But that brings up my only complaint and it really has nothing to do with the band. The overall tone and volume of the vocals was at times shrill and frequently distorted. If it was a case where the instruments were also distorted, I would think I got a bad CD, but the instruments were warm and present, while the vocals were not mixed or mastered properly at all and the volume of the vocals was uneven throughout the CD.

That said, as long as you play this CD at fairly low volume, the sonic problems may not be noticable..but about the band..

Really nice arrangements, good pickers and lots of energy which is hard to do in a studio. Here is the breakdown:

    1. Left This Town - A nicely done original with a lot of traditional flavor. I really like the songs this band writes and they play with that barn dance energy that works well here.

    2. Life Is Not A Guarantee - A very well done original ballad with strong old timey flavor.

    3. Backroads - Another original. A great fiddle break and another up tempo bluegrass style romp.

    4. Jokers Wild - Nice instrumental. This tune gives me an idea of how good they must be live, since it sounds like they are playing the song like they always do it.

    5. Hello Trouble - Good bluegrass music with this uptempo spirited tune. Good fiddle break and nice tone on the instruments.

    6. Sparrow - Another original with good lead vocal part. The Banjo is very nicely recorded and is actually "warm" if that isn't an oxymoron. The harmony vocals get quite shrill and a little distorted in spots. Great
    arrangement.

    7. Clinch Mountain Backstep - A well done traditional bluegrass tune. Very interesting doubled mandolin break that stands out from the other instrument breaks.

    8. Little Piece Of Cornbread - Another excellent original written by Lynda Wittig. Very interesting mix with the vocals way behind the instruments and the words hard to discern at times. The instrument breaks are quite a bit louder than the lead vocal which is interesting at best.

    9. Fire On The Mountain - This reminds me of a Neil Young ballad. Very tasty instrument backing and the breaks are really well done. The lead vocal is slightly distorted but I could see Neil Young doing this song.

    10. Morning Train - Yet another original from Lynda Wittig. I must admit I am very impressed with the way this lady writes songs. They are very well crafted. This song sounds like a traditional Appalachian Mountain porch ballad with great harmony. The vocals are really, really loud and slightly
distorted (again) and uneven, but that does not mean the band didn't sing a great song.

    11. Troubled Life - An original bluegrass style gospel song. Good harmonies but that dreaded distortion shows up again on certain parts of the lead vocal.

    12. Black Mountain Flag - Traditional tune done well. The instrumental songs are well mixed, with good balance and nice tone for all the instruments.

All in all, a good band for those who prefer traditional bluegrass with old timey flavor and high lonesome vocals.

I would enjoy this band live, and I only wish more attention would have been given to the production.

The CD was produced by Steve Dilling of IIIrd Tyme Out and recorded at West Station Records. (Mark Gensman, Ground Zero Sound)

4 out of 5 stars Great debut for a singer, songwriter, banjo & guitar player.......2004-06-09

Chris Cairns' solo CD, "Runaway Train," was conceptualized as an offering of new, thought-provoking original music along with some new arrangements of well-known standards. Cairns wanted to capture the passion and sorrow of life, bottle it up and deliver it to us. Based in Santa Barbara, CA., Cairns is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and banjoplayer who fronts his own band with Eric Brittain and Orest Balaban. For this CD project, Cairns assembled some excellent California musicians to lend a hand. They include David West, Tom Lee, Gabe Witcher, Tom Corbett, Lorenzo Martinez, Bill Bryson, Penny Nichols, Mike Witcher, Peter Feldman, Mike Mullins, Tom Ball, and Bob Nichols. The result is a very successful and rewarding variety that is a little bluegrass one minute, a bit country the next, a tad blues, and a skosh folk.

Chris is a very technically adroit banjo player. Just listen to "Dear Old Dixie" if there's any question. Or his clawhammerin' on "June Apple." His songwriting is also commendable in that he is able to melodically turn some nice phrases to tell his stories. As with most writer's bodies of work, certain songs are more memorable than others depending on their messages, arrangements and hooks. Chris' best penmanship is actually apparent on some of his gospel songs, "Let Me In" and a rawboned arrangement of his humorous tongue-in-cheek "Then I Know We'll Be Alright." David West's fingerpicked guitar is a strong component of the former. Cairns' relaxed opening track, "All Worked Out," has a strong message of optimism and hope, and it might've made a nice closer for the project too. Chris' baritone lead vocals are pleasant and comfortable, but some of his renditions seem to lack some emotional electricity and passion. The title cut, "Runaway Train," for example, could have really been infused with considerable powerful rhythmic intensity. "Warm Southern Winds" would've benefited from similar treatment, and the band's modulation to a higher key by the end of the song does help.

Cairns is a very well-rounded musician, and he should be very proud of this debut project. It is professionally recorded, engineered and produced. I was happy to see the artist's notes and lyrics for each song. Keep your eye on Chris Cairns. We'll be hearing more about this up-and-comer in the bluegrass community, and he's off to a great start with his first album and FireHeart record label. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

      5 out of 5 stars A wonderful recording with a wonderful message!.......2005-03-05

I was lucky enough to be involved in the premiere staging of Love Austin in 2001. It was one of the most wonderful experiences that I have had, and I feel lucky to have been able to work with John thomas Oaks on that production, as well as on another production of JT's, "Sunny."

Love Austin boasts the kind of music that will make you feel good, that will tug at your heartstrings, that will make you want to dance, that will make you want to sing (it's a great CD to crank at full volume in your car and sing at the top of your lungs), it will make you want to cry, and ultimately--make you want to smile. And, as if that isn't enough, it will lift your spirits with a wonderful message, as any JT recording does. Regardless of music genre preferences--you WILL NOT be disappointed by this recording. I give you my word!!

5 out of 5 stars A Preview from the Composer.......2001-03-07

Five stars from the composer is a bit pretentious, I know! Please bear with me! As every hard-workin', family-lovin' man knows, balancing your love life and your work life ain't no easy task, 'specially if you ride the rodeo. But the job sure is a lot easier when you've got a truckload of country tunes to help you along (26! Count 'em!). This double-CD cast recording of the country-western musical revue LOVE AUSTIN features the talents of Jimmy Bryant singing the role of Austin and Melissa Greene singing Misty's role. Also appearing on the CD are Bryan Sutton (recently featured on Dolly Parton's LITTLE SPARROW CD) and a stellar group of backup singers (Dirk Donahue, Elizabeth Ledger, Carter Maysilles, Dave McCutcheon). Also featuring the harmonica prowess of Jason Amos Oaks. Jeff Zona played all guitars, Stuart Weed played bass, and J. Vincent Harris played drums. Composed, produced and arranged by John thomas Oaks. Lyrics by Andy Corbitt and John thomas Oaks.

      5 out of 5 stars Cool rock'n'roll/rockabilly music.......2006-03-16

This is the first album released by Nicky Kay & His Fabulous Kay-Tones, a new band on the rock'n'roll/rockabilly scene. Don't expect any raw, wild & frantic neo-rockabilly, like the Hillbilly Hellcats or The Marauders, for example. What you should expect is a bit softer, less slap-driven but nonetheless excellent rock'n'roll music, smooth vocals and clean, crisp production.
The album includes 8 uptempo rockers, 2 instros ("Twin Commencement" and "Ultrabilly Boogie"), a stroller ("This Shame") and even a little swing ("Let's Rush It"). "Tear My World Apart", "Rock These Blues", "Dance Dance Dance" and "Too Late To Be True" are particularly recommended.
All in all, a superb first album. I hope more will follow.
