Her mother was 16 when she had her, and her father moved on when she was two. By the age of 15, with a double-barrel shotgun always at the ready, she was managing a kicker bar in rural Illinois where the corn fields meet the pig farms. That gave Gretchen Wilson something to sing about, with attitude in spades. "You might think I'm trashy, a little too hardcore," she admits on the smash single "Redneck Woman," "but in my neck of the woods I'm just the girl next door." Wilson, already the toast of Nashville before this full-length debut hit the shelves, isn't just putting the trailer park back into country music--she's the antidote to Shania and Faith. Nothing here sounds manufactured or studied, and the best songs are those she wrote. If most of those spotlight the fightin' side that has made "Redneck Woman" an anthem with blue-collar babes, she lets her vulnerability show on her choice of covers, particularly Leslie Satcher's gospel-rap of "Chariot" and the marital weeper "The Bed." Whatever you think of Wilson, who packs a hint of Sammi Smith and Allison Moorer--and even Janis Joplin--into her double-fisted delivery, you won't forget her. Move over, Loretta. Make way, Tanya. Here's another good ol' honky-tonk girl. --Alanna Nash

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad for a Bartender.......2007-07-10

Even though this is her first it is well worth it she sings well and has old traditional country music not like ms.twain who went for the pop country Gretchen keeps her music downhome and I like it and you need to listen to the whole thing to see her influences not just the title cuts there is more to be heard from her and I'll buy that

5 out of 5 stars Great CD .......2007-05-30

I love this Gretchen Wilson CD. Actually the whole family loves it.It's a great get !!

1 out of 5 stars gritty tomboy garbage.......2007-05-13

Horrible music, even makes country look bad and thats bad!!! Like nails on a chalkboard

5 out of 5 stars For the herd of us Redneck Women.......2007-03-11

I don't listen to country very often, but Gretchen Wilson speaks to the country girl in me, and I love it. It takes me back to my childhood, and all of the wonderful people that I grew up with in the Midwest that cultured folk would call rednecks. I've got to say that Victoria's Secret buying high class broads are dull. The whole CD takes me back and her voice is beautiful too.

3 out of 5 stars Here for the Party.......2007-02-04

Gretchen Wilson burst onto the scene with her hit "Redneck Woman" and hasn't stopped yet. If her debut CD "Here for the Party" is any indication, Gretchen is here to have us all party for a long time to come.

As you read her bio after listening to her album, you can see where "Redneck Woman" came from, straight from her life and heart. It's gets your toes to tapping and you can't help but sing along when she wants all the other Redneck women to say Hell Yeah! (You should see the looks I get listening to this song in my truck and start singing along.)

"Here for the Party", the title track and the second single released from Gretchen's debut album is another toe tapper that will have you singing along. It's just a good old, have fun kind of song.

One of my favorite songs on the CD is "Pocahontas Proud." It's about living her dreams and making her hometown proud of her. Not to mention showing the people on music row that said she didn't have it that they were wrong.

There are a few ballads on the CD that show her vocals off and give you an idea that Gretchen is here to stay and make her mark on country music whether they like it or not.

There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

3 out of 5 stars If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. Fittingly, this two-CD set includes "I'm Still Here," which may well be Stritch's motto. If you're looking for a concise yet bewitching history of the musical, this is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars A National Treasure.......2007-07-05

This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.

Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.

If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Stritch is superb.......2007-06-27

The only disappointment is that I missed the show live. This is a terrific honest performance by an actor who has a deep well of experience from which to draw. From her early childhood memories, through acting school, her loves, her struggles and more, Ms Stritch weaves a fascinating and completely enthralling story. Ultimately, she lives the songs, rather than just performs and this is what really marks her out.
I am so glad, she's still here!

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining but grating on the ears.......2007-05-11

I've never been able to understand what is so great about Elaine Stritch's singing. It's simple: she can't sing. I've tried and tried to like her, and I do, as an actress, but NOT as a singer. Listening to these CDs, all I hear is a grouchy old lady voice with no vibrato, no range, and no ability to hold notes. If she were to try out for American Idol she would get cringes! I love her humor and honesty, and that's why I bought this, but the voice...ugh.

5 out of 5 stars Great Broadway Review.......2007-04-11

I thoroughly enjoy this collection of stories from her experiences from a teenage girl in Michigan through her career, very funny, some sad and great entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Elaine Stritch at Liberty.......2007-01-19

Completely entertaining---a bit maudilin in places, but a must have for any Elaine Stritch fan.

Certainly worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Limited Edition That's Worth the Extra Dollars.......2005-02-15

If you've heard people on the street corner asking "Who on Earth is this country chick?" the answer to their question more than likely is Gretchen Wilson. As evidenced by her runaway hit LP "Here For the Party," she is essentially the savior of modern country music. In an era when country artists keep crossing over into Adult Contemporary territory and trade in Nashville for glossy pop hits, she has emerged and reminded audiences how country music is supposed to be done.

After hearing her sing about her affinity for cowboys, whisky, leaving the Christmas lights on her porch all year long and wearing her jeans tight "just to watch the little boys come undone" it's plain to see she has that special something that gets beneath listeners' skin. The fact that "Party" has not left the Top 10 since its release is no small wonder.

Although upon hearing her six self-penned tracks there is a tendency to question her sincerity, it is in fact genuine. Hailing from a minute rustic community in Illinois, her mother gave birth to her when she was only sixteen and her father fled when Wilson was two. By age fifteen she was living by herself and running a bar called Big O's that was used to very rowdy crowds, where she had a 12-gauge loaded shotgun under the desk just in case she ever needed to protect herself. Some might downplay such humble beginnings, but Wilson owns them proudly, as evidenced in her smash hit single "Redneck Woman".

"Victoria's Secret, well their stuff's real nice/ but I can buy the same damn thing on a Wal-Mart shelf half price/ And still look sexy, just as sexy as those models on TV/ I don't need no designer tag to make my man want me/ Well, you might think I'm trashy, a little too hardcore/ But in my neck of the woods I'm just the girl next door."

If any listeners who've heard her hit single harbor any doubt she could sing sweet ballads as well as tunes raucous and upbeat, "When I Think About Cheatin" and "What Happened" prove she sounds just as at home in that department. In fact, the only notable downsides that exist on the LP are the fact the rap on her cover of Leslie Satcher's "Chariot" does not bode well in the context of the song or album, as well as the short length of the disc.

The album's sharp closer, "Pocahontas Proud," finds her singing just how important it is to her to make her hometown proud. With her album edging double-platinum status, it is safe to say they are.

"I'm the biggest thing that ever came from my home town/And I'll be damned if I'm gonna let 'em down/If it's the last thing I do before they lay me in the ground/You know I'm gonna make Pocahontas proud."

In addition, the bonus DVD that contains the awesome videos for "Redneck Woman" and "Here For the Party," awesome interview footage (including her family, friends and acquaintances and a visit to her hometown) and quality live performances justifies a purchase of this limited edition package. It should be noted, however, that "Rebel Child" and "It Ain't Easy" which have been released as overseas B-sides really should have been included on the CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Interesting format; fine/fun artist.......2005-05-20

The album I have has one disk with two sides. One side is an audio CD (which I played in both a regular CD player & in my computer); the other is a DVD which I played in my computer. It has the two saucy hits: "Here for the Party" and "Redneck Woman" that Gretchen performed at the recent Country Music Awards show -- at which she won 2 prestigious awards. Both are on both sides, but the DVD side also includes videos of several songs including these two. It also has interviews in which Gretchen is very down-to-earth and authentic. Very refreshing. Reminiscent of her obvious surprise at winning her 2nd award on the show. The DVD also has "Outlaw Women" -- a duet with Hank Williams, Jr. which is not on the CD side. The DVD side does not have all the songs (10) on the CD side. Some of these are ballads--quite different from the 1st two hits. The lyrics are often quite direct and meaningful--some things we might take to heart. I especially liked "What Happened" and "The Bed" as well as "When I think About Cheatin'" (which also on the DVD)--at the Grand Old Opry with B&W shots of older musicians/performers. "Pocahantas Proud" appears to be autobiographical. Gretchen co-authored several of the numbers including the first two. John Rich collaborated on quite a few. Big & Rich collaborated on the title song--and perform on "The Bed." It's a quality album by a fine talent--a great buy for what you get.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, good DVD as well.......2005-04-05

This is a very good CD. I've listened to it about 2 or 3 times, and it's awesome. I bought the Dual Disc whenever it came out, and the DVD side has some music videos along with interviews and such. So far, I've been able to play the audio side of the CD in my car stereo, home cd changer, dvd player, and my computer's E: Drive. However, my computer could not read the audio side correctly when I placed it in my D: drive. Oh well, it's still an awesome CD, and supposedly Gretchen is working on a new CD called "All Jacked Up" for release near the end of the year.
