Fabulous.......2007-02-27
This Cd is terrific. I first heard one of the songs on this CD on XM radio, The Blurgrass Station. Not only was the song that made me order the CD great but there are many great songs on this CD, She is truly a talented singer and I can't wait to hear more from her.
Great New Bluegrass Artist.......2006-10-28
For those of us out here who love good bluegrass, this is one of the best new talents I have heard. Listen closely. Who do you hear? I'ts Alecia Nugent, of course. But maybe just a little Rhonda Vincent and some Patty Loveless, too. That can't be a bad thing. Love her.
The Lady Can Sing........2006-08-14
I had never heard of Alecia Nugent until I came across her first CD a month ago while browsing in Barnes and Noble. I was taken aback by the quality of her voice and purchased the CD. After listening to it, I knew I wanted to hear more of this woman with one of the most beautiful and natural voices I'd heard. This her second and only other CD is even better than the first. With the possible exception of "Breaking New Ground", every song is a keeper. Which is a rare find since it seems like most albums of new music today have a couple of good cuts followed by dull filler songs. Ms. Nugent is a wonderful ballad singer and this album highlights her talent. The highlights include "It won't be me", "God knows what" and "I cried all the way to Kentucky." If you like "slow songs" that are expressions of genuine emotion, you'll listen to this album over and over. This is not pure Bluegrass although the fiddle and the banjo are ever-present. And it is head and shoulders above the pablum that is coming out of the Nashville country scene these days. I'll be surprised if this one doesn't win an award or two even though it bucks the trend of the cookie-cutter songs that fill the airwaves. Can't wait for Alecia's third one.
Great new voice in bluegrass music........2006-07-02
I have listened to the whole cd, and I really enjoyed it.Of interst to me was the song"I Cried All The Way To Kentucky",not just because I live here, but the second part which goes,"I laughed all the way back".The song is about the passing of an uncle, and how she cried all the way to the funeral, but laughed all the way back home because she remembered how funny he was.I was impressed by her version of Carl Jackson's "Breaking New Ground", who also produced the cd.
Great music.......2006-03-24
This CD meets all of my criteria for a great CD. First, a bunch of great pickers: Rob Ickes from Blue Highway, Adam Steffey, an original member of AKUS & now w/ Mountain Heart & a bunch more. Second, songs that you can turn up loud in your truck & sing along with. Third, lyrics that you can understand. Fourth, simplicity - in the songs selected, the production, the singing of Alecia & the lack of hype in marketing - no marching bands or midgets dressed in shiny suits.
One personal gripe: "Letter from Home" is a song on the CD. The words have been changed to reflect Alecia's background in Louisiana (w/ co-songwriting credits given to Carl Jackson) when in fact the song was written in 1988 by Jennifer McCarter, one of the McCarter sisters reflecting their upbringing in East Tennessee. I would have liked to see some attribution given to the McCarters. Better yet, an invitation to one or all three to sing w/ Alecia. That would have been really cool!
Putting that aside, one last urgent plea to Carl Jackson, Alecia Nugent & others of a similar ilk: while Nashville is spinning off in weirder & weirder directions, please, please keep making music just like this.

Very smooth bluegrass....maybe too smooth?.......2007-04-16
I bought this CD based on the reviews here at Amazon, and overall, I'm glad I did. Alicia is young bluegrass artist with an amazing voice and I'd be surprised if she doesn't go on to have a great music career.
Why not 5 stars? My only complaint is that the record is a bit too smooth. Very well produced by Carl Jackson, who accompanies Alicia on at least one song, and produced the record. He's a fan, no question about that. But there's a sameness to the songs and I find myself wanting a somewhat harder edge. But that's probably a personal taste and many will no doubt be amazed as the virtuosity of her studio players and a wonderful country voice.
Alecia needs to take voice lessons.......2007-03-19
Alecia's voice sounds harsh and does not blend well with the music. Unlike other traditional bluegrass artists such as Rhonda Vincent and Claire Lynch, Alecia's voice is quite raspy (and low) and just does not sound good w/ the bluegrass style of music. She needs to take voice lessons or choose a different style of music. When she attempts to hit the high notes her voice sounds screechy. When she harmonizes, it does not sound so bad, but when she's singing alone, it does not sound good at all. The only song that sounds good on the album is "You don't have to go home" and that is only because it is a song where others are harmonizing with her...and this covers her mistakes. The overall album is crummy for a bluegrass album. Furthermore, her song arrangements are rather mediocre and there just isn't anything that grabs your attention. For a good bluegrass album w/ good background music and outstanding vocals, try Dolly Parton's "Little Sparrow," "The Grass is Blue", or "Halos and Horns." You could also try Rhonda Vincent (though not as good as Dolly Parton). Claire Lynch and Dale Ann Bradley are good bluegrass singers too. Carrie Hassler and Hard Rain released a wonderful bluegrass album about a year ago and she just about tops in the bluegrass music industry. She has the prettiest voice and it sounds so beautiful w/ the bluegrass music that she sings. If you were only buying 1 album, I would buy Carrie Hassler first. After Carrie Hassler, the second best would be the three Dolly Parton albums I've mentioned above. Claire Lynch and Dale Ann Bradley have good sounding albums too...but only if you have extra money to spend. They are not the best...if you want the best, get Carrie Hassler, Dolly Parton, and Rhonda Vincent. Do not buy Alecia's album...it is a complete waste of money.
Best Debut Album Since ..........2006-08-23
This first album for Alecia is a winner. No weak songs. Good mix of bluegrass, gospel and country --- all "heart" music. Alecia's voice is nothing short of stunning and the songs are chosen to flatter it, as they should be. Her range is remarkable. She can go low like no one since Patty Loveless --- without sounding forced at all and never missing a note --- alternating between a plaintive cry and an agressive, confident, throaty trill. And here's a secret: her second album is even better.
As Good As It Gets.......2005-07-23
There isn't a weak track here, and the voice is powerful, smooth, and soulful. She clearly merits the favorable comparisons to Rhonda Vincent, who appears on the CD. I heard her live at the Grand Ol Opry singing "Paper and Pen" and she sent chills through the audience, receiving an incredible, screaming/stomping ovation. Absolutely electric. So where's the next CD?
Sweet and Beautiful.......2005-04-12
Alecia Nugent is one of the attractive voices heard on bluegrass radio stations. Her style of singing; depth of soul, and refreshing voices adds strength to her songs of love and lost love. Her youth appearance makes her very appealing to a large number of younger listeners. I'll Stay Around, Think of What You've done, and You don't Have to Go Home, are some of the finest songs of this audio CD. Musical support from another young talent Rhonda Vincent and Lynn Howard makes the recordings even more enjoyable. If you are new to bluegrass music and one who is interested to listen to bluegrass you must check this CD out.
