Unbelievable

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Diamond Rio is one heck of a good country band: perfect picking, high-energy presentation, and harmonies tight like a dream. Unbelievable is another solid outing filled, start to finish, with hit after likely hit, from the on-fire title track to the earnest anthem "(I Will) Start All Over Again." Granted, as is usually the case with Rio, everything is far slicker than it needs to be, and misses the bluegrass punch and gospel intensity these boys are capable of. For a shot of the band's true potential, check out their truly unbelievable cover of "Walking in Jerusalem" on the Peace in the Valley compilation. Compared to that high standard, Unbelievable doesn't quite live up to its title, but it's still one heck of good country album. --David Cantwell

Country Music Magazine
Diamond Rio is definitely mainstream, in both the positive and pejorative sense of the word. Yet these particular songs sound over-produced and a bit contrived amidst the more honest and earthy tones of the rest of Unbelievable.

Amazon.com essential recording

With its somewhat grandiose title, the legendary Otis Redding's fifth album maintained much of the same formula that had been used on his previous recordings for the Stax subsidiary label Volt, combining some fine Redding-penned originals with the stylized vocalist's interpretations of others' material. While Redding always lent his own special raw, gospel-edged stamp to everything from the Beatles' perky "Day Tripper" to a slowed-down, unparalleled reading of the pop standard "Tennessee Waltz," it was on his own songs--such gems as "Fa- Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)" (his 15th R&B hit single), the plaintive "Ton of Joy," and the bluesy "Hawg for You"--that Redding was at his soulful best. That said, nothing quite compares to how he turned another pop classic, "Try a Little Tenderness" into an emotive opus that became a showstopper wherever he appeared during his tragically short-lived four years as a hit-making recording artist. As an example of the horn-driven Memphis sound, Dictionary of Soul is an excellent reference, and Redding is in peak form as a true American original, whether he's giving '50s hit man Chuck Willis's "You're Still My Baby" a workover or breezing through his own almost-joyful "She Put the Hurt on Me." For the benefit of those with limited "knowledge" of Redding's specialized vocal vocabulary, the original album included some sidesplitting definitions of terms such as "gotta-gotta" ("not able to do without it") and "ou" ("ouchless excitement"), and they are reproduced in full on this reissue of what is easily one of Redding's finest recordings. --David Nathan

5 out of 5 stars Otis Smokes!.......2006-07-15

Otis Redding is smokin' hot with his wonderful retinue of songs! If you are looking for burning soul with horns, flourishes and classy crooning then this is the one for you!
My favorite, Try A Little Tenderness squeezes out every possible high note there is, Sad Song is a great gut bustin' fa fa fa fa fa fabulous venue for the master of soul. Buy it and you won't regret one single instant.

5 out of 5 stars that ain't no hogwash........2005-02-20

i don't want to spoil anyone's listening experience but if you've never heard the first song on this album before then turn your stereo up really loud before you do 'cause the first words out of his mouth are so funny you will laugh.

4 out of 5 stars Singing " Fa fa fa fa fa fa fa"........2004-09-10

Otis Redding was one of the greatest soul singers of all time. He could rock like Little Richard, and then turn around and sing a ballad like Sam Cooke. This was his fifth album, from 1966. It contains a mixture of some classic hits like "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa" and "Try a Little Tenderness", and fine lesser known songs like "Hawg For You". But what really showcases Otis's unique talent is the cover songs here. He could take a country song like "Tennessee Waltz", a standard like "Try a Little Tenderness", a Beatles song like "Day Tripper" and and old R&B song like "You're Still My Baby" and when he got through with them they sounded like Otis Redding songs. Fans of classic sould should dig this album.

4 out of 5 stars A Soul Classic.......2003-12-24

This was my 2nd Otis CD, after "Otis Blue", and it is a great companion to that great record. I love the Memphis horn sound; much of the greatness of these recordings is the backing of Booker T and MGs. I really find these CDs to be fun, just fun to listen to, tap your feet to, sing along with. Otis has loads of personality and a distinctive voice. Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars The Definition of Soul.......2000-05-09

As Otis Redding's individual albums go, this disc is one of the best, second only to the excellent "Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul." Over half of the tracks are Redding originals, including the funky "I'm Sick Y'All" and "Sweet Lorene," the wonderful "Ton of Joy," and "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)," which Otis said was inspired by the theme from the TV game show, "The $64,000 Question." The usual handful of cover tunes are exceptional as well, such as the memorable renditions of "Try A Little Tenderness" and "Tennessee Waltz." The Beatles' "Day Tripper" gets completely reworked in an energetic Memphis treatment, complete with the punchy horns of the Mar-Keys. Guitarist Steve Cropper and the rest of Booker T. & the Mg's add their signature sound behind Otis' voice, crafting a classic soul record. The original liner notes, featuring a humorous glossary of his unique singing phrases, are fortunately reproduced in the CD booklet. For those curious about where to begin among the numerous releases in his catalog, this album is an aptly named example of Otis Redding and crew in fine form. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Loco!.......2005-04-01

Los Straitjackets is one of the top dogs in the surf rock scene, and if you pop this disc into your cd player, you'll see why. This is some top notch surf/instrumental rock done by folks who obviously love this kind of music. It's very apparent that these guys are having alot of fun playing this music. Fun is something missing from alot of groups anymore. When I wanna take a break from my progressive rock snobbery and just have fun, these guys are great way to do it. If you ask me, you really can't go wrong with any Los Straitjackets material, but their debut is hard to top, and I would suggest it as your first one if you decide to get any. Slipknot can stick it where the sun don't shine.

5 out of 5 stars My #1 Instrumental Surf Album!!!.......2001-08-26

Mention "surfing music" to most and they'll think you mean The Beach Boys. So did I, until a friend introduced me to these guys at Philly's Khyber Pass. WHOA!!! I had my mind completely blown that night. It's LOUD! It's EXCITING! It's MOODY! It's MELODIC as all get-out. And most importantly-- it's FUN! When you have 4 guys onstage playing entirely instrumental guitar music while wearing Mexican wrestling masks, how could it NOT be? Starting out with the explosive "Fury", the power and quality of this debut CD never lets up. Through slow & mysterious ("G-Man"), quirky ("Straitjacket"), cool ("Jetty Motel"), powerful & awesome ("Caveman"-- this contains the only lyric-- yes, singular-- on the disc, a much-improved remake of an Eddie Angel song from '93) you're taken on a wild roller-coaster ride you don't want to end. High-speed powerhouses like "Tailspin" (a single in Finland!) are breathtaking and hypnotic at the same time. The outrageous fun of "Itchy Chicken" shows a sense of humor all too lacking in most of today's so-called "popular" artists! And listen to the sheer clarity and beauty of "Calhoun Surf"-- can 95% of the rock guitarists out there play anywhere NEAR this good? LOS STRAITJACKETS quickly became my #1 album of 1995, and led me to discover several hundred other bands playing variations of the surf / instro genre. But-- incredibly-- NOBODY's topped them yet! With Danny Amis & Eddie Angel, LS boasts my picks for the 2 most EXCITING guitarists anywhere, and I rank drummer Jimmy Lester (who's always UP FRONT onstage!) as THE #1 most exciting drummer I've ever seen! These guys are SO GOOD onstage and off I sometimes wonder if producer Ben Vaughn has nothing more to do when he works with them than point a microphone and roll tape. (Hey-- they're HIS #1 fave surf band, too!)

4 out of 5 stars Utterly Essential.......2001-05-01

When I gave their sophomore album a listen, I was expecting it to sound a lot like the follow up album, THE VELVET TOUCH, but I was sorely mistaken, which is a good thing! The bands that have staying power are the ones that can reinvent their sound, Los Straightjackets are no exception. The twangy guitar and hyper-kinetic drum beats don't fail to satisfy...

Track 1. FURY The perfect tune to open the album and show you exactly what you're in for. Straight up surf rock that sounds the best when it's turned up real loud.

Track 3. STRIGHTJACKET This is a full on Link Wray-ish groove. Danny Amis and Eddie Angel burn through low down blues riffs while incorporating their signature surf sound. one of my favorite songs on the record.

Track 10. ITCHY CHICKEN As hilarious as it is cool, the title of the song hits the nail on the head. Somehow, the Straightjackets figured out how to make their axes cluck like chickens. In the tradition of Run Chicken Run, this one is equal parts Surfari's and Colonel Sanders. One of the numerous arguments that Los Straightjackets are one of the most talented (and original) bands of all time.

Track 13. RAMPAGE Smokin' rock & roll. Since the Jackets don't have lyrics, they rely on the name of the song to convey the idea and feelings of the tune. Once again, they came up with a title that fits the song like a glove (or a wrestling mask). RAMPAGE is a four way assault from all the instruments. These dude's rock hard and have a blast doing it.

In conclusion, this album gets an "A" from Peterbiltman for originality, fun and complexity. Los Straightjackets are proof that there still are a few good rock & roll bands out there.

5 out of 5 stars A collectors item!!.......1999-06-05

Well I met in 1992 for the first time The Planet Rockers from the USA in Holland, with guitarplayer Eddie Angel. He's also the guitarplayer from Los Straitjackets and The Neanderthals. And he has also a cd on his own name: "Eddie Angel Guitar Party". And I can say this cd's are very good for the lovers of the sound of garage/surf-rock music. The sound of the Los Straitjackets is great! For the lovers of Dick Dale and Link Wray, you must buy this one!

5 out of 5 stars A review from France.......1998-12-17

Three years years ago I had hit a musical brick wall. After previously listening to everything and being stuck in the midst of the grundge years I was forced to listen to National Public Radio. During an intermissions they played Los Straightjackets "Calhoun Surf". I immediately drove to Garage d'Or in Minneapolis and bought the first CD. Surf may not be everybody. But I love !!! this album. I have since seen the band on three occasions prior to moving to France and talked to Danny Amis a couple of times. You can keep Alanis Morrisette and the rest of the overproduced poser crap that comes from industry music. I'll stick with the music that makes you happy to be alive. Buy this album it's the greatest!!! And to be produced by Ben Vaughn, well that in itself should be enough to at least try this album.

5 out of 5 stars A must have!!!!!.......2007-07-19

My best friend has a set of triplets. One day when they began to cry she turned this CD on and they stopped crying instantly. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed it. Their reaction was almost hypnotic. As a result, before my daughter was born I purchased one for myself. It's a Godsend! It helps her to fall asleep without rocking. It calms her fits. I play it in the morning, I play it in the evening. Sometimes we bring it with us in the car. It goes along with us on all trips. This CD is never far away. Forget about setting the bouncy seat on the clothes dryer, driving around in the car nights to help your baby fall asleep. All you need is this CD.
One word of caution though, my friend says it lost its charm once her babies approached the 1 yr mark. So, if you have an older infant it may not yield the same results. My daughter is 5 mos and it still works its magic. My husband and I often joke that we will be sad the day this CD loses it appeal.

FYI- This CD should NOT be 37.00. I think I paid $15 or 20. I'm not sure if that is an error or not. I would try running a search for it elsewhere. It may be worth $40 but it should be the price of the average CD.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is UNBELIEVABLE!.......2000-09-30

Diamond Rio does it again with this CD. They are an amazing country group, and are great to hear in concert and on the radio. My personal favorite on this album is I THOUGHT I'D SEEN EVERYTHING, which describes how I felt when I found the CD. UNBELIEVABLE, the title cut, is just a fun song, while TWO PUMP TEXACO describes the essence of country music. Add that in with I KNOW HOW THE RIVER FEELS, and you've got a great album that will be your favorite of your collection. I also suggest that you find the other Diamonf Rio CD's available here at Amazon.com, and buy them. It's worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Unbelievable!.......2000-01-11

First of all, this album deserves more than the 5 star rating, more like 5000! This group is undoubtably the best band country music has ever seen, and will ever see. If you haven't seen them live, then you have no idea! Their powerful harmonies touch your heart in "You're Gone", and "How the River Feels", and their catchy lyrics in "Unbelievable" just are beyond description. Overall I would have to say that if you think otherwise you need to listen again! Because if you can't hear how great these guys are maybe you should have your hearing checked! If the new album is anything like this one then we're all in for a big treat! :)

5 out of 5 stars Diamond Rio's Unbelievable Talent.......1999-12-14

Diamond Rio's distinctive harmonies first drew me to their music. After attending a concert, I was hooked! Unbelievable offers the best of this group's outstanding talent. Some CD's only have one or two good songs. Every song on Unbelievable is a potential hit. I can't stop listening to the awesome tunes of Diamond Rio. No wonder this album was nominated for Album of the Year by the Country Music Awards! Diamond Rio has quickly become my favorite country group and every Diamond Rio CD I buy is a great investment.

1 out of 5 stars UNBELIEVABLY AWFUL.......1999-10-29

What is truly "unbelievable" about Diamond Rio is that anyone actually buys their music. Surely one of the most hokey and derivative bands in country music today, their songs sound only slightly less contrived and over-produced than your average local television advertising jingle. And like ad jingles, their music is only memorable because its so damn irritating that it gets in your head and WON'T GO AWAY.

As sappy and been-there-done-that as "You're Gone" is, it is a masterpiece compared to the title song, which easily qualifies as one of the worst ditties in recent country music history. As if the song itself wasn't awful enough, Marty Roe's "Bubba on Amphetamines" vocal performance is more annoying than watching a PBS Barney marathon. Whenever I turn on the radio and am assaulted with this torturous song, I just about break my finger slamming the "Search" button so that I can get to another station - any other station.

At least they are getting better at what they do -- that is if being more irritating that the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync put together is their goal. I thought "How Your Love Makes Me Feel" from their GREATEST HITS album was as bad as it could get until I heard "Unbelievable". Unbelievable, indeed.

If everyone just ignores them, will Diamond Rio just go away?

One thing's for certain: the Unbelievable Truth's lead singer, Andy Yorke, sure can sing his heart out. While this English trio's debut may receive attention solely because Yorke's brother is the acclaimed lead singer of Radiohead, Almost Here stands up quite well on its own musical merits. A particularly evocative soft-rock ensemble, Yorke, Nigel Powell, and Jason Moulster have cobbled together a calm, moving collection of hauntingly melodic songs. Yorke's rich vocals practically glow with a seductive melancholy that gains much strength from the band's rich tapestry of guitars, keyboards, and percussion. On "Higher Than Reason" his voice soars dramatically over a delicate arrangement of fanciful British pop. Gentle and hypnotic, this is one album of extremely sad songs that you shouldn't miss. --Mitch Meyers

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Stunning.......2004-12-30

This rates in my top ten albums of all time. No other album has touched my soul like this one. I was living and working in London the year this was released (1998) and I read a review somewhere that described it as "Crowded House for Intellectuals". Nothing could be more accurate. This is an album that will make you celebrate everything in life the one day and philosophise and wallow the next. It hits a raw nerve every time - no matter how many times you have heard it before. I went on to buy all the singles from this album and every time I was pleasantly surprised - they have b-sides that are absolutely stunning. What a pity they went their separate ways after the second album, but I can say that they have sure left their mark in my heart and my mind.

5 out of 5 stars People who doesn't appreciate art stay away from this CD!.......2004-06-24

Come on guys, this band is intellectual, artistic, and with so different purposes from Radiohead... The orquestation, the lyrics (intelligent, by the way) and the pain that inspired the song creation processes in it makes the CD worth the money. It is unfair that this beautiful music has been forgotten and sold at such cheap prices...

Buy it. Enjoy art in its pure form.

5 out of 5 stars Forget what you know or what you think you know...............2001-12-28

About all that you have heard regarding this band and the comparisons to RADIOHEAD. They do not exist! Everyone seems to think that this band would not have made it (if you consider what they have done "making it") if the singer was not the brother of the lead singer of RADIOHEAD.

Well, simply put, this is a stupid way to view things. Aside from gene pool similarities, there are none. This band stands upon it's own merits. The song writing is stellar! The vocals are soothing and chilling and peaceful. The lyrics have a depth that is missing in 98% of todays so called music.

Forget trying to compare them to other bands. The whole..."if you like so and so, you will like this band" is stupid. Buy this record regardless of who or what you like. Throw all expectations out the window and buy this record! It matters NOT if you like Neil Diamond, or, Coldplay, or the Verve, or Zeppelin, or Earth Wind and Fire............. this band has something in every song for every song lover.

Well worth the time and effort to find this band.

    Steven.......age 32/ Hockey #21

I bought this Cd about a year ago, and didn't really listen to it. Then after a mounth or two it ended up in my Cd.player and it didn't later for at least a week. If you like this sort of music you can't get much closer to heaven then when you're listning to this album...

5 out of 5 stars Little brother of Radiohead? The answer is: No.......2001-09-23

Unbelievable Truth's lead singer Andy Yorke, might be Thom's little brother, but this doesn't mean they're a Radiohead rip-off. Absolutely not. In fact, Unbelievable Truth's music is much more mellow than Radiohead's. Almost Here, their debut, consists of very sweet easy-tuned songs (not meant for people who only listen to hard rock / metal). Great tracks such as 'Solved', 'Forget About Me', 'Building', 'Settle Down' and 'Stone' prove this band is not a one-day-fly. Well, maybe they are, since the band split in 2000... but that doesn't mean they will be forgotten. Of all three Unbelievable Truth albums, this is their best. The other two albums (Sorrythankyou and Misc.Music) are beautiful too, but miss that typical Almost Here-'vibe'.

If you're into Coldplay, you'll love this band.
If you're into Radiohead, you might love this band.
If you're into good music, this is your band!

    5 out of 5 stars Sarah returns!.......2006-05-23

Sarah returns with her sophomore album the follow up to her smash debut 'Green Eyed Soul'. Never heard of her? Well...her success so far is strictly in her home country of Germany. She's what you call 'Blue Eyed Soul'. She has a voice like Christina and Mariah and sings pop'nb (pop mixed with rnb) type songs. Very gorgeous voice!

Unbelievable kicks off with her first duet with then boyfriend Wyclef Jean on 'One Night Stand'. Its a very fast hip hop beat yet pop type song. 'Hes Unbelievable' pops it up a little but not as much as some of her debut album songs. 'I wanna touch you there' takes the final pop up tell mid CD. Its blues time baby!

'Loving Permission' is a slow and sensual ballad while 'Where did you sleep last night' is a blues 'I'll kick you butt' type song. The 'No more drama' sampling 'Bounce' hip hops it up again only to tone it down with the sweet and sexy rnb ballad 'Skin on Skin' (which was released shortly after she met her now husband Marc Terenzi.)

'Wait tell you hear from me' pops it up but with a serious tone about drug abuse. 1+1=2 starts the 'pop section' of 'Unbelievable' mainly produced by the music making team KayRob. This section takes us through some sweet songs especially ballads such as 'Beautiful' and 'Sweet Thang'.

'Teach U Tonight' brings us back to where we began with a sexy pop'nb number. Depending what version of 'Unbelievable' you have this is the point the track listing may differ. The copy I have then has some remixes from 'Green Eyed Soul' plus bonus tracks 'That girl' and 'Make my day'. The version here has 3 Spanish versions of new songs and of course 'From Sarah with love'.

Overall a good CD...maybe not her best CD but not bad at all. Highly recommended!

This woman is UNBELIEVABLE & makes me have a GREEN EYED SOUL. She has a new CD (Key to my Soul)being released, which I'll be hurrying out to buy along with her concert DVD. She never ceases to amaze me. Not just one or 2 songs on her albums are good ... they all are OUTSTANDING. I definately recommend her CD's.
