What Country Music Should Be.......2007-06-04

Somehow, a modern country music industry in search of its own identity has overlooked Chris Knight. His music tells stories that strike so deep in the listener -- both lyrically and instrumentally -- that it would be impossible to question the honesty of it. Frequently and inappropriately referred to as a poor man's Steve Earle, Knight stands alone in his ability to captivate with tales so sorrowful and intriguing yet perfectly simple and pure. In "The Jealous Kind," Knight relates himself as a protagonist with undeniable shortcomings in the title track, "A Train Not Running," and "Hello Old Man," yet he remains a sympathetic figure throughout, particularly in the bitter "Staying Up All Night Long." To put it simply, Knight's music reminds you of the beauty of rural life's dullness and straighforwardness.

One of the most underrated talents around. Master story teller with music. Finally....someone worth enough to wear Steve Earle's crown.

"Staying Up All Night" is worth the disc alone! He creates stories so well hidden in song you sometimes forget the music!!

Thank the stars for Chris, Buddy Miller, Greg Trooper, Robert E Keen, Tift Merritt, Alison Moorer and Steve Earle....My cd player would be empty without them.

I've only just discovered Chris Knight thru online Alt Country Radio. I've purchased all 3 CD's upon hearing House of 90 Acres and The Jealous kind. His narrative style catches the listener. I literally stopped, sat & listened. His stories take me back to my youth and conjure up memories of being an under-privileged girl in lower Appalachia. Carla Came Home is a mirror tale of my own life experience in the foothills of Mississippi oh so many years ago. House of 90 Acres opend a memory that has errupted a volcano of emotion. Funny how we forget. This is music for your inner most self.

Let's face it...anyone named Delbert is probably danged good at his job...you can't tote that monkier through life and not strive to excel just to get folks to hush up. Delbert can sure enough make folk hush up, it's hard to chatter when your jaw drops. Anyone who sees Delbert perform for the first time just naturally gets left speechless, so come prepared with a pad and pencil if you're not already a fan. If you can't find him touring nearby, just listen to 'The Jealous Kind' a few times and see if it won't make you swear eternal loyalty to the Cult Of Delbert. You'll be in good company, as represented by other fans and reviewers listed here. Delbert's got the pipes, y'all. He's no Johnny Come Lately, honkeytonkin' is his craft and he's been working roadhouse crowds into frenzied true believers for more years than your Mama's been making good cornbread. He's got some good cuts on this CD, the title cut alone is worth the price, and 'Back To Louisiana' is guaranteed to get the halt & the lame up and rockin'. Like those Lotto folks say, "You can't win if you don't play"...and you can't win if you don't play some Delbert very loud and very often. Try his latest CD 'One of the Fortunate Few' for an update on how the rascal is rocking the house these days. Y'all might as well get with it, times a-wasting. Hurry up and get happy.

I bought the LP Jealous Kind in 1980? and it has always been one of my favorites. I think it ranks right up there with One of the Fortunate Few. Delbert is awesome!

This is the best album I own, Garland's voice is truely beautiful, all the tracks are corkers and is one of the items I would rescue if my flat was burning. Everyone who loves soul music should have a copy of this in their collection.

Don't wait too long.......2006-02-26

I'm filling in my post-vinyl Delbert collection and, looking back, I realize how little weak material there is. ALL his albums are worth having, and they sound better to me with each passing year. If you like him, I'd grab these while they're still around. Same goes for the Second Wind/ Keeper of the Flame set. I'm docking a star for the misplaced apostrophe on the cover.

Delbert's Best.......2001-10-26

Excellent compilation featuring full versions of McClinton's two best albums, THE JEALOUS KIND (1980) and PLAIN' FROM THE HEART (1981). Bonnie Bramlett's backing vocals on the Jealous Kind cuts are great; it's too bad she and Delbert didn't record more often together. Nice addition: Three bonus tracks from LOVE RUSTLER.
