The Cold Hard Truth

Editorial Reviews

He's the voice of experience, the voice of regret, or simply the Voice. Though George Jones suffered a near-fatal collision while recording this album, his first for Asylum, Cold Hard Truth has the vocal command of an artist with a new lease on life. Highlights such as "Choices," "Our Bed of Roses," and the album-closing "When the Last Curtain Falls" (with harmonies from Vince Gill and Patty Loveless) extend his reign as the most heart-clenching singer of sob-song balladry in country music. Even comparative throwaways such as "Real Deal"--a title chorus in search of a song--benefit from Jones's patented swoops and leaps. With the mournful strains of fiddle and steel guitar providing the musical frame, the album avoids novelty fare (no "High-Tech Redneck" here) in favor of a sound that echoes, if not equals, the classics of old. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars Good, Old Fashioned Country.......2006-12-03

George Jones is rightfully regarded as one of the best of the genre. This album is an example of why. His singing voice conveys rural America without actually pulling up a specific locale. It may seem harsh but it fits with the lyrics and the tone of the music.

These selections might be called Honkytonk by some but they deal with life's little victories and problems. Even when the song is a bit sad, there is something strengthening about them. He tells a story with verse and tone and does so well.

This is not the modern country music that tries to be pop. It is the old stuff, a fine vintage.

5 out of 5 stars Classic George Jones.......2006-02-26

With this album, George only proves how he improves with age. No other country artist can handle a lyric as well.

5 out of 5 stars The Cold Hard Truth.......2005-08-22

I had bought this CD for my sister inlaw so i don't know much about this CD i have heard songs from it and it's a good CD.
I believe that this is George Jones last CD and if it's as good as all the rest of his CDs than it's got to be a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars very good album with a few outstanding songs.......2005-07-15

There is a reason why the name George Jones is one spoken with reverence respect devotion and hell plain love. He is the greatest country singer of all time period. When he sings songs like Choices and Cold hard truth, He makes you feel strong emotions whether you want to or not. Much like the late great Hank Williams did you dont have a choice you will feel something. solid album with some great songs buy it. enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A great George Jones album.......2005-07-11

While this album was nearing completion, George had an accident that almost killed him. He had intended re-recording some of the vocals but the accident prevented him from doing so. The record company decided to finish the album with the vocals as they had already been recorded, resulting in an album that may not be quite as good as it might have been although still of a very high quality. In any case, most George Jones fans will enjoy the album and will understand the circumstances. Despite being well into his sixties, George's voice sounds as good as ever.

The album is just what you expect from George Jones - a mix of up-tempo songs and ballads (mainly the latter) all delivered in the style that his fans are accustomed to. The up-tempo songs lighten up proceedings between the slower, often heartbreaking songs. Among the up-tempo songs, I particularly like Sinners and saints, in which George suggests that the only difference is that one group is forgiven and the other is not. Other great up-tempo songs are Ain't love a lot like that and You never know just how good you've got it. But as ever with George's albums, it is the slow songs that really show him at his best. Among these are Choices, The cold hard truth, Our bed of roses and the closing track, When the curtain falls.

The booklet contains some of George's favorite personal photos that show him as a marine and with various country stars. Underneath the one featuring Connie Smith, George says that Connie was always his favorite girl singer - rather surprising considering his great duets with Melba Montgomery and Tammy Wynette (both featured on other photos), not forgetting his marriage to Tammy. The best and most poignant among all the photos is the one featuring Patsy Cline, taken backstage at a show in Kansas City. Patsy looks really happy with life - but a few hours later, she was killed in a plane crash. Other photos feature Vince Gill, Patty Loveless (both of whom provide backing vocals for this album), Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard among others.

Despite the title of the closing track, this album was not George's last. He recovered from his injuries and eventually resumed his recording career. But if this had been his final album, it would have been a great way to finish.

If you enjoy George's music and want more yjan just the obvious hits, this album is worthy of a place in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars This proves REAL country music still exists!.......2005-12-09

This album is pure traditional country with lots of steel guitar and fiddle and has a unqiue sound to it unlike any other! Every track is dynamite, and each track has a different country style to it, most of them upbeat songs about women, drinkin', and playin good ol' honky tonk music! The best two tracks are "All Bucked Up" is a tribute to the great Buck Owens and the very under rated "The Can" a clever song about how drinking has ruined his life. This guy has an incredible voice and is pure talent and it's a wonder why he isn't more popular. I've listened to a lot of music in my day, and this is one of the best albums I have EVER HEARD!

5 out of 5 stars This kicks a**... deserves ten more stars at least!.......2005-01-10

Texas honkytonker Ed Burleson is one of the brightest lights on the independent country scene today. This new record is simply flat-out one of the best hard country albums of the year... Heck, of the century (so far!). Sure, Burleson has plenty of rough edges... that's what makes his music so real. He also has a kick-ass band with guys who know how to play country music with real feeling, and a bunch of songs that sound like a real, live human being wrote 'em, not some committee in Nashville. Burleson's other albums have all been really good... this one is really great... his best to date. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Road music for your pickup truck . . ........2004-11-08

The cold, hard truth is I stopped listening to country some years ago and reverted to Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, and Bob Wills. Now I'm catching up with the country revival, and luck turned me onto Ed Burleson's "Cold Hard Truth." Out of a bunch of CDs I bought lately by new performers I never heard of before, this one is head and shoulders above the rest. I love the energy in these songs, the great musicianship, and the unprocessed sound that takes you back to the good old days.

Burleson's high and tight voice sounds like pure Texas, and the songs are all about tough times, busted hearts, and charging on through no matter what. The opening song, "(Hill Billy Soul and) Honky Tonk Heart," sets the tone for the whole album, of pure fun and orneriness bound to get any man into trouble. And the follower, "All Bucked Up," is a wide-grinning tip of the Stetson to music legend and inspiration, Buck Owens.

There's a quick shift to busted-love songs, "Cold Hard Truth" and "If You Wanna Go Just Go," followed by the mournful "Loneliness (Made Me Do Things I Ain't Proud Of)." This trio is a heart-felt journey through anger, sorrow, and regret, and Burleson sings it like he's been there, for sure.

Other favorites on the album are "Long Distance Love" and the foot-loose anthem "Ramble On." The joy of the album is its embrace of so many different musical styles ranging from roots to Jimmy Buffet. "Dead Skunk" is wonderfully outrageous, and it leads to the rip-roaring, bring-down-the-house finale, "Heartbreak Highway." This CD is on the changer in my car, where it's kept a smile on my face even in the worst traffic.

5 out of 5 stars REAL COUNTRY MUSIC.......2004-06-05

They don't make 'em like this anymore. With a precious few exceptions. This is hard-driving country music. And Burleson has the voice to pull it off, with that tear-in-your-beer lonely sound. A lot of today's "country" is just pop music; a lot of today's "alt.country" is just rock'n'roll. This album is solid country music, pure and simple. I hope I get a chance to see this guy live sometime!

5 out of 5 stars Tasty mix of contemporary and feisty honky tonkiný.......2004-05-16

Ed Burleson's fourth album, "The Cold Hard Truth," continues his emphasis on a tight roots country sound that presents fresh material with traditional sensibilities. Nine of 14 songs were written or co-written by Burleson, and he demonstrates that he can turn a phrase for a slow ballad ("Loneliness"), develop a hook to draw you in ("All Bucked Up"), or even write bluegrassy numbers ("Ramble On" and "The Cold Hard Truth"). The latter bounces along like a backstep from the Clinch Mountains of Virginia, but Burleson appears to get most of his inspiration from his native Lone Star State. Co-producer Doug Sahm introduces Ed "Too Country" Burleson who then breaks into a raucous and rocky "Heart Break Highway" to close the album. Burleson also gives a nod to North Carolinian Loudon Wainwright III with a cover of "Dead Skunk," a song written in fifteen minutes that climbed to #16 for Wainwright in the early 70s.

With the help of ten accompanists who play guitars, steel, dobro, mandolin, bass, fiddle and drums, Burleson serves up a tasty mix of contemporary and feisty honky tonkin'. Deserving special recognition are Ray Austin (steel, dobro) and Reggie Reuffer (fiddle). His interpretive twist in a song like his triple-timed "Tell Me Why" is to interweave hot acoustic licks between the verses. He also showcases the band's straightforward musicianship in another genre, Western Swing, with "Sneakin' Suspicion."

A former rodeo cowboy, Ed Burleson's performance arena is now the many clubs and festivals that book him. In the fall of 2004, he'll perform on Palo Duro's Texas Music Cruise. Burleson has the voice, talent and friends to continue his upward climb to greater heights. With continued hard work, his devoted following may even one day approach that of Sahm's and Wainwright's. 5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Americana Christmas Album Ever........2005-12-08

If the Charles Shultz's Penuts kids grew up and did a country Christmas record, I imagine it would sound a little something like this.
Packed with plenty touching and goofy Christmas songs (some holiday favorites, some originals), it's Christmas with a twang...and some bells.
This album is sure to fill your holiday with joy, laughter, and plenty of toe tappin'.
So grab a seat by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate, pop on the Cold Hard Truth About Christmas, and have a very merry Christmas with the Blackstone Valley Sinners.
