Ride This Train [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
This concept album ranks with the most thematically ambitious of Johnny Cash's career, though the title's a little misleading. Instead of a collection of train songs (the sort featured in the Cash catalogue from "Hey Porter" to "Orange Blossom Special"), he alternates the spoken-word narrative of a rail trip that crosses the country (and cuts across centuries) with songs about the characters you might meet along the way. From a Kentucky coal miner ("Loading Coal") to an Oregon logger ("Lumberjack") to a convict on a Mississippi chain gang ("Going to Memphis"), Cash inhabits the various manifestations of what he calls "the heart and muscle of this land." In "Slow Rider" he combines the folk standard "I Ride an Old Paint" with the gunfighter legend of John Wesley Hardin. The reissue of this 1960 release adds four bonus tracks, story songs in a similar spirit but without the narration. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars If you REALLY like Johnny Cash.......2007-06-12

I was glad to get a copy of this as a present for a friend in Europe who is a serious Johnny Cash fan. My cousin tells me that there is a 4 CD set with the same name. But since i was only expecting one CD i wasn't disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Ride This Train, Johnny Cash.......2007-03-11

I was SO pleased to be able to find this album! In my opinion, this is one of the finest albums Johnny Cash ever recorded. I'm sure it is the only place he ever recorded the song "Old Doc Brown", which never fails to touch my heart. All of my children (now grown with children of their own) remember this album (as an old LP) and were just as pleased with it as I was! Thank you SO MUCH for providing a place to find treasured memories!

5 out of 5 stars Replaced lost LP with this CD.......2007-02-21

Here again I used to own Lp version & was happy to replace with CD with added tunes & restored quality. I am very pleased & recommend it to all.

5 out of 5 stars A classic, one of Cash's best LP's.......2005-11-27

Although it may intially be hard to get into Cash's concept albums (although they contain many of his best recordings imho), this is a good place to start. A train ride through the days of old, is fascinating through the writing, but even better the voice of Johnny Cash. Every song here is strong, and I rank the first 5 songs up there with anything he ever recorded. Johnny's voice never sounded so good and is best vocal performance along with American Recordings no 1.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Cash fans, Get on board!.......2004-06-17

As with several other albums/cd's I've bought, I didn't like this at first. After repeated listenings, I'm a true believer. This is a concept album in the truest sense of the word - between tracks you hear Johnny talking about America, along with the sounds of a steam locomotive - it's as though Johnny is travelling cross country and telling stories of various Americans including slaves, slave-owners, outlaws, Cajuns, lumberjacks, miners etc. This cd could be used by history teachers - it's that interesting. My favorite track is Dorraine of Ponchartrain - it's a real tear jerker along the lines of a 19th century Ebony Eyes (Everly Brothers). Goin to Memphis is also really cool - reminds me of John Fogarty's "Workin on a building". All four bonus tracks are excellent - Willie Brown is a feminist's delight - the "player" dies of a broken heart. The Ballad of the Harpweaver isn't really a song, it's a narration along with an ethereal sounding reverb on the electric guitar - it's an other-worldly psychic tale - genuinely weird and interesting. Smiling Bill McCall is hilarious - a Nashville radio star idolized by all the kids who attempts suicide because he hates his theme song and turns out to be 4 feet tall and bald. If a Cash fan loves "Boy named Sue" - he/she will positively love Smiling Bill McCall. I think the 1959-1963 period was among Johnny's finest years of output. I love this CD so much, it's a narcotic to me - I have trouble removing it from my cd player. I recommend it as highly as possible.

4 out of 5 stars If you like US History and Johnny Cash, this is worth the $$.......2001-12-26

When I was growing up, Johnny Cash was probably the top country star on the local AM radio. I bought this set about a year ago mainly because some of the songs which were recorded during that time period haven't been heard for probably 25 years. This set covers many of the American history songs which were popular in the early and mid 1960s. I particularly enjoyed the first 3 discs of the four disc set. The fourth CD, unfortunately for me, did not contain any of my favorites. I've been a fan of Johnny Cash for many years, and have not regretted purchasing this box set.

        5 out of 5 stars 8 Johnny Cash Albums in 1 Box.......2000-06-20

If you are a fan of Mr. Johnny Cash this box is worth buying. It includes eight of the old Columbia albums: Ride This Train; Blood, Sweat and Tears; Sings the Ballads of the True West; Mean as Hell; America - A 200 Year Salute in Story and Song; Bitter Tears; From Sea to Shining Sea; The Rambler; and a few singles. Like the 3 other Johnny Cash boxes from Bear Family this one is excellent - and a chance to get to listen to some of the old albums which have never been released on CD. It comes with a great booklet filled with pictures and the original liners notes. This is surely something else than all the so called 'greatest hits' CDs released over the last few years.

5 out of 5 stars Will the Real Johnny Cash please stand up.......2000-01-22

The first thing that Johnny Cash wanted to do when he arrived at Sun Records was to sing Gospel music, Sam Philips wouldn't let him. The first thing he did when he went to Columbia was to sing Gospel Music;the second thing he did was to start a history of "Theme Albums" that has never been equaled. The fact that Columbia thought enough of these albums to savor the taste in a complete box set of the titles is a credit to their accomplishments. They were never critically acclaimed, but his True Fans loved them.

The first, of course, was "Ride This Train". A make believe journey through the country on an imaginary train, with several stops along the way to examine what history had to offer for characters and for scenery.

"Come Along and Ride This Train", "Loading Coal", and even "Papa played the Dobro", all reflect an image of character and ability which Cash, as an historical writer, has projected on the pages of our minds. They've combined it with his second adventure album concerning "The Legend of John Henry's Hammer", "Casey Jones", "Nine Pound Hammer", "Busted", to say the least. This CD is a true reflection of a long trip through history using music as a "method for his madness".

The second selection, coming from the "Ballads of the True West" edition, Truly represents the historical features of Cash's love of the old west. Songs of the pioneers expressing their hopes, what happens at Boot Hill, why was Mr. Garfield shot down and by whom; remember "Johnny Reb", the true saga of the Civil War, to the offbeat comedy of "25 Minutes to Go".

The third selection appears to combine the Indian theme of "Bitter Tears" with his much later "America" where some duplication occurs with the Ballads of the True West record. Who can forget "Ira Hayes", American hero at Iwo Jima who ending up a drunk back in America and drowned in a ditch. Here, John examines the relationships between the original Americans and those that came from elsewhere to steal and abuse the land. He sings of "Custer split his men, well, he won't do that again", and many other episodes of historical importance in America. He sings of the battles and travels through the old west, "The Battle of New Orleans", and Kentucky.

The next CD, from the "From Sea To Shining Sea" recording allows Cash to travel through the Southern States and enjoy the sites and sounds where he came from, where he went and where he will continue to go.

This package contains 105 tracks of pure musical history. Packaged by the people at Bear Family complete with booklet and four CD's. More than any other collection of his work, this package reflects what Johnny Cash was, and what he represents to his fans and to his music. This is another Cadillac produced by The Bear Family. It's a must for anyone interested in John Cash the man and his music.

I myself have every record, but not with the same quality that CD brings.

        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic set.......1999-10-22

It's about time someone finally released a boxed set of Johnny Cash's harder to find sides. Germany may not be able to win a war but they sure can find some good American country music to release. This is a great set that belongs in the home of every country music fan.

4 out of 5 stars A super collection of Old Johnny.......1999-10-12

Once again I've had the pleasure to listen to the Man in Black. I've especially loved the songs dedicated to Indian themes, such as As long as the grass shall grow, Talking Leaves, Hiawatha's Vision. Thank you for your contribute to the Indian cause, Johnny.

          Album Description

Japanese remastered pressing includes 4 bonus tracks. Ride This Train took Cash's conceptual explorations into previously unimagined realms. A full-blown concept album featuring sound effects and lengthy narratives would never have happened on Sun founder Sam Philips's watch, but the newly unfettered Cash reveled in the opportunity to make this striking, distinctive record. The album was billed as a "travelogue of America," and Cash neatly combines his passions for American history, storytelling, and the magic of trains to present portraits of the country he loved. Each track on the album begins with Cash delivering a monologue over train sounds, taking the roles of characters from different walks and eras of American life, followed by a song further illustrating the tale. CBS. 2006.
