Read My Mind

Editorial Reviews

Few artists have sung about marital infidelity as often as Reba McEntire, and she returns to the theme on her triumphant Read My Mind. No moment better illuminates what a marriage is really made of than the moment when a wife confronts a cheating husband, and McEntire returns to that showdown again and again. On "I Won't Stand in Line," McEntire addresses a husband who is quite nice to her when she's around but equally nice to lots of other women when she's not. On "I Wish That I Could Tell You," McEntire plays the wife in a lifeless marriage who wishes she could make it easy for her husband to go. "Till You Love Me" and the album's title track are both straightforward love songs with juicy melodies, and McEntire opens up her enormous, gospelish voice on them as if she were Nashville's Whitney Houston-- another big-throated singer with an instinct for the emotional jugular. -- Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars a songwriters dream.......2007-07-18

If You Could Read My Mind is probably Gordon Lightfoot's best album. I've always felt he was a master at the folky/singer-songwriter/camp fire crew. Occasionally he would let it rip and whip out some light rockers, but on this release, it's mostly a collection of songs that has a very distinct homemade feel to it. The perfect music to listen to if you live in a wooded area surrounded by trees.

I can't find much to complaint about and if you're a Gordon Lightfoot fan, you won't either. Even in the early days of his career he was pumping out one memorable song after another. He was very good at consistency. His cover of Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee" is pretty awesome with a pretty dark vocal melody from Mr. Lightfoot. Some of the songs I admit repeat a bit often, such as "Cobwebs and Dust" but that doesn't interfere with the well above average songwriting. It's probably easy to get some of these songs confused with each other, but you'll be humming the vocal melodies to many of them well after the album has finished playing in your CD player. Good music.

5 out of 5 stars The Master.......2007-01-06

Gordo is the master of his genre. I don't know of anyone who's had more of a genius for writing great songs in his category of music. If you love acoustical music, masterfully composed ballads, then get anything Gordon's done and you'll find it more than an enriching experience.

I truly find it odd that virtually every one of my favorite folk singers are Canadians, i.e., Joni Mitchell, Loreena McKennit. In the male category, though, Gordo reigns supreme.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-11-05

I bought this item becuase it was one of the results when I was searching for "If you could read my mind". I'm very glad I did, the rest of the cd is great.

5 out of 5 stars It Just Wears Well.......2006-08-02

It doesn't sound dated. Sweet without being maudlin. Worth refreshing my memory from the vinyl, buying this CD. From a gentler time. If you liked Parsley Sage Rosemary and Thyme by Simon and Garfunkel, or the first few Peter Paul and Mary records, or Poems Prayers and Promises by John Denver, this should be around your house for feeling good, full of light and hope.

Particularly, Your Love's Return: Song for Stephen Foster, is masterful lyrically and musically. It doesn't make any 'best of' compilations, so I think you need this album too. Roses are waiting for dewdrops to fall...

5 out of 5 stars The Canadian Balladeer Extends His Audience .......2006-03-10

'If You Could Read My Mind' marked a time of change in Gordon Lightfoot's musical career. After five albums with United Artists Lightfoot made a switch to another label. This album, his sixth overall, was his first recording with Reprise and it contained the hit 'If You Could Read My Mind' which was one of his first songs to receive serious radio play in the U.S.A. His big breakthrough was still four years away when 'Sundown' would be released, but this was never-the-less the beginning of his efforts to gain the attention of the larger American audience south of the Canadian border.

Comprised of -11 tracks- of now classic Lightfoot tunes, this is essential Lightfoot. Heck, what am I talking about? They're all essential Lightfoot!

Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. But the often-clumsy charms of Richard Donner's cartoonish, hit-and-miss take on the Man of Steel was blessed with at least one superlative artistic effort: John Williams's epic score. The composer's Oscar-nominated music (coming on the heels of Star Wars and Close Encounters) was a wall-to-wall heroic symphony, rife with memorable melodies and ominous arrangements. Almost every original cut on this soundtrack appears in an expanded version, supplemented by nearly a dozen previously unreleased cues and alternate takes. Featuring a deluxe slipcase and extensive, new liner notes, this is the definitive release of one of Maestro Williams's greatest scores. --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04

FIVE STAR FOR MUSIC. 1 STAR FOR AUDIO. Ok I've wanted this recording for almost 4 years. Now I got it. I am a discerning listener. This soundtrack is not the best quality. Tape hiss is very pronounced. You can tell it's taken directly from a cassette recording. I have other digital recordings of this music. They are miles ahead of this cd. Soundtrack is on the Rhino label. What? Rhino is not known for high fidelity. So it is very deceiving for one to buy a cd thinking it's John Williams conducting on a new recording in 1998 or whenever. It's the actual 1978 recording. Now let me unleash my rage. This thing sounds as if it's recorded with a single microphone in a bathroom, at a truck stop. Yes the music is phenomenal. My favorite track is #2 Krypton. I was hoping to discover some new hidden melodies that I've never heard in previous recording (original 1978). Nope. This IS the 1978 recording. So I will be getting the Debney recording just so I can hear what I'm missing. Love the music. Just can't hear it. ALL OF IT! But cool booklet. I can't listen to a booklet. But I got it. Whoopee.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME! John Williams shows again why he's the master of movie scores.......2006-08-31

After over a year of trying to find a seller of this fine soundtrack, I finally found it! It is high time that the full score was released on CD.
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.

5 out of 5 stars Is John Williams Superman???.......2006-08-20

After listening to the CD, John Williams must be Superman. By far, the greatest movie score ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-08-10

Other than the over kill of "Can you read my mind", an excellent collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hector, about the liner notes..........2006-07-14

I have the previous edition, and the notes that came with it were nestled next to the CD in a thick booklet (with a cover of Reeve in front of an American flag) that was large enough for the slipcase cover, but too big to fit into the CD case front. Otherwise, the one-sheet cover that came with your soundtrack is identical to the slipcase version.

I love this album i grew up on it. It is still one of my Favorites!

5 out of 5 stars Reba always country and powerful!.......2007-06-15

It is interesting that people actually say that Reba is at any time not country! She is the voice of country and has always stayed close to her roots. Its how she says her words and the topics that she picks that makes it a country album. Her music is the same as when she started 30 years ago. Times have changed but Reba stays true. Rather if she sings Respect or any other song she has the gift to make it country. This album is considered by many one of the best country albums of all time. Give it a try, all could have been radio singles!

1 out of 5 stars I AGREE WITH THE NAYSAYERS...........2006-01-18

Well, I didn't let the negative reviews stop me from ordering this CD because I really like Reba McEntire. However, I should have paid attention to the negative reviews. Reba may be a good singer and she is. But the material on this CD has got to be some of the worst I have ever heard. The first song nearly made me want to croak and it hardly got better from that point. Even a good singer like Reba cannot make bad material sound good. Reba's voice is good. Her choice of material (especially on this CD) is not! I'm sorry I bought this.

5 out of 5 stars The CD that got me into Reba.......2006-01-07

I couldn't disagree more with the negative reviewers here. This is the CD that got me into Reba. Maybe it's not traditional country, but all the songs show off her phenomenal voice, and the backup vocals and musicians are just great.
I am a professional singer and know good singing when I hear it!!
So don't let the nay-sayers discourage you from buying this.

1 out of 5 stars Filler SOngs Just to Make an Album.......2005-10-25

And say that this is one of my least favorite Reba albums. Its too far out there for me that I can't bear to listen to it except for one or two songs. That's not enough to make me like a record. An album should contain more than just "filler" songs. Most of this album is "filler".

4 out of 5 stars Christine Lavin's Music Makes You Think of Her As a Friend.......2005-06-09

"Good Thing He Can't Read My Mind" is a typically enjoyable album by Christine Lavin - my first copy was on vinyl. She is an absolute genius of a songwriter and performer, and this album demonstrates her abilities well. Most of the songs are her originals.

The title cut talks about that "getting to know you..." stage of a relationship when partners who are just starting to pair up will submit themselves to all kinds of things they usually would NOT - just to please their prospective mate. So - the protagonist of the song endures skiing, sushi and the opera when she really doesn't like those things. The song includes some of the funniest passages I've ever heard in a song:

Some say eating sushi is like chewing on your own cheek
Or sucking down a bucket full of tentacled slime
I do not like sushi, but Hey! I'm eating sushi....
It's a good thing he can't read my mind.

This collection includes her trademark wit as well as some pieces more introspective such as "Realities", in which she laments the human tendencies to overvalue fantasy and undervalue things more familiar - such as your already existing relationship. It also includes some tunes that are just plain fun - One of my Favorite Lavin tunes is "Santa Monica Pier" which is just a little narrative ballad about how wonderfully blissful it is to be at that magical place. She has a real gift for description: "The palms trees all look a little bit like Tina Turner from behind" - which she wrote at that time when Tina Turner was the sexiest 40-something on the planet. The humor tour-de-force is "Mysterious Woman" where she writes about balancing the desire to be seen as mysteriously desirable as a woman with the reality of things like defrosting your refridgerator. She covers the 60's pop tune "Downtown" with Livingston Taylor, and they turn it into a nice folk hook.

I wrote in another review that listening to her recordings was like having a conversation with a cherished friend. This is one of the discs that makes me think that.

5 out of 5 stars Not much humor on this album.......2004-05-30

I discovered Christine's music after first discovering Cheryl Wheeler, a singer with a similar type of appeal. Both are singer-songwriters who can write about serious topics when they choose to, yet they each have a great sense of humor although this particular album seems mostly serious (sometimes tragic) to me. Christine provides extensive liner notes about the songs as well as lyrics for them.

Christine wrote all the songs here except Downtown, which is a cover of the sixties pop classic. While lacking the energy of the original, it is one of the more interesting covers of this song. Christine sings it as a duet with Livingston Taylor. In the liner notes, Christine goes into great detail about her idea for a video version of the song in which she is a poor unfortunate who gets mugged while Livingston is a big-hearted cab driver who comes to her rescue. I do not know if this video ever got made but I enjoy their interpretation of the song.

The title track is amusing though I'm surprised at the lyrics. It seems that Christine is doing all the things that her man likes but she hates, yet convincing him that she likes them anyway. In an age when women sing about their independence, this song goes against the grain. Still, I'm not complaining. The other amusing song is Mysterious woman. In the liner notes, Christine explains that she'll never be mysterious because she talks too much. Another cheerful, though not funny, song is Santa Monica pier - a song simply about having a good time.

This set includes several sad songs including Realities (about a breaking relationship), 85 (contrasting the pleasures of Miami Beach with the loneliness of one individual who lives there), Never go back (wishing it were possible to go back but knowing it isn't), Somebody's baby (about homeless people) and Ain't love grand (about an old woman who never bothered with love when she was young but wished she had).

If you are looking for humor, this is not the album to buy. This shows (mostly) the serious side of Christine's music. If you enjoy singer-songwriters in contemporary folk music, Christine is definitely worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars High-quality performances throughout..........2001-11-25

Most Lavin collections have two or three songs you just have to hear over and over, and will never forget, and then two or three which just don't quite work, more due to execution than to the idea. This album doesn't have the highest of her highs, or the lowest of her lows. It is very steady, very pleasant, and certainly a "must-have" if you are already a fan, and a great introduction to her work if you are a rookie. Christine mixes humor and seriousness better than almost anyone else out there, and she is one of those rare "women's point of view" performers who attracts and can hold on to male fans. I like all the songs on this one, but her most remarkable pieces are scattered on her other studio discs.

5 out of 5 stars mysterious woman.......2000-03-17

This was a great song. It summed up all of women's delimma's as to what to aspire. Should I be alluring or should I have a clean refrig. Except she sings it much better than I can say. All the tunes are great and all the lyrics come home.

In an age were basically most songs are re-mixes & re-releases, this track remains one of the best remakes ever!
Performed by 3 ladies of Pop, Ultra Naté, Amber and Jocelyn Enriquez, they give the classic track a brand new magical up-tempo/dance beat. The song can be welcomed and enjoyed by a whole new generation. "If you could read my mind" was re-recorded for the movie '54', the 3 divas also appear in the closing scene. Memorable and beautifully done.
