Picnic

Editorial Reviews

Compared to Willie Nelson or Butch Hancock, Keen fits squarely in the second rank of Texas songwriters, but even a relatively slick work like Picnic is better than the bulk of what's produced these days in Nashville. Nothing here approaches the knockout wit of Keen's "Merry Christmas from the Family," but "Shades of Gray," the story of small-town criminals almost arrested for a robbery they didn't commit, and "Then Came Lo Mein," about a guy uncorking a lifetime of frustration during a cheap Chinese dinner, are both examples of Lone Star storytelling at its best. --Keith Moerer

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Listening from Year's Past.......2007-01-12

Hearing Laura Nyro sing her own songs is something special. You could feel the emotion unlike when you listen to the other artists who have performed her songs.

My only regret is that my favorite, "Sweet Blindness", is a live recording from 1976. I would rather have the studio version, which is how most of the recordings on both discs are presented. It's still a winner in my book.

3 out of 5 stars marred recording of mostly good music.......2006-10-13

Unfortunately, none of the previous reviewers thought to mention that however good the music may be, a significant portion of this collection is hard to listen to because of poor engineering. Old recordings are simply thrown onto CD without any modifications/improvements. Hence, you get lots of splatter on higher notes (think tinny record player from the 60's). Classics like Stoney End, Billy's Song and Blowin' Away are the worst of the lot. If you don't mind skipping over the bad cuts, there will be something here for you. Consider buying this one second hand at a deep discount.

5 out of 5 stars Great Overview Of A Terrific Talent.......2006-10-12

I've been a fan of Laura Nyro since the late 60's and was fortunate enough to have seen her perform in person from that time until the early 90's.
Ms. Nyro's talent as a songwriter is well documented, as are the depth and sensitivity of her lyrics.
Her talent as a singer is less celebrated depite her tremendous ability to put a song "over" and make the listeners think she is singing just to them.
This is a great CD to introduce newcomers to a fabulous talent cut down far too soon in life.
God bless Laura Nyro.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful Songwriter, Terrible Singer.......2006-07-03

The only cut on this CD that works as a vocal is the haunting "Billy's Blues." Otherwise Ms. Nyro's singing voice is this incredibly unattractive soprano wailing all over the place; just like Sandra Bernhard when she tries to sing 'seriously'.

3 out of 5 stars Overrated?.......2005-08-27

Before buying this anthology, I was aware of Laura Nyro's reputation, but my only exposure to her music was through cover versions by the Fifth Dimension and others. But hearing some of her original songs used to great effect in the soundtrack of "A Home At The End Of The World" made me want to explore her work further. I'm not sure this uneven collection was the right introduction. Since I think that you should judge a artist by his/her best work, maybe one or two of Nyro's classic early albums would have been a better starting point. Some of these songs are indeed phenomenal, but by the end of the collection some aspects of Nyro's distinctive style begin to grate. Like a lot of great songwriters, she was not a first-rate singer. Too often when she strains at high notes, her soprano voice turns into a poorly-controlled, artless squeal. Many, if not most, of her lyrics are cyptically and neurotically personal. The impression of an unbalanced, self-involved persona is reinforced by the strange image on the CD cover, a photo of Nyro staring into the camera while pulling out a handful of her long hair. She could be a mental patient. I'll keep working on this one.

5 out of 5 stars If you like jazz, you'll love Bolling!.......2005-07-05

If you've never heard Claude Bolling before, you've really missed out. This suite of his is as wonderful as all the others. However, if you are not familiar with Bolling, listen to the available clips before purchasing, as even though I think he's great, his music is not for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Superbly inventive, beautifully recorded.......2002-10-04

Claude Bolling's astonishing "Picnic Suite" is a superbly inventive, beautifully recorded album of music that's somewhere in between jazz and classical. It's hard to describe, but it's absolutely addictive.

The opening song, "Rococo," starts out with a prim, rather strict classical structure, then slouches easily into a warmer, more jazz-tinged mood. Jean-Pierre Rampal's flute playing flits like a butterfly above the clipped piano (played by Bolling) and the mellow guitar playing (by Alexandre Lagoya). "Madrigal" has a Spanish feel to it--mournful, quiet, in a minor key. It's lush and lovely. "Gaylancholic" has the feeling of a fugue without actually being one, the guitar and flute chasing each other down all sorts of musical blind alleys. "Canon" is bright and cheerful, Rampal's flute soaring and singing into a gorgeous blue sky of a piece. This is sumptuous music that rewards the many listens you'll doubtless give it.

5 out of 5 stars Top 10.......2002-04-02

If I were to own only 10 music albums...Picnic Suite would definitely be one of them. Bolling's music is full of fun and vitality. He is today's Vivaldi.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite.......2001-06-30

This is my favorite Bolling release. I have heard all the other ones (being a college radio station DJ gave a lot of access). This one is just my blend. Some slow, emotionally moving pieces (ala Barber's "Adagio for Strings") and some faster, but never extraordinarily fast.

Decent recording, but not great. ....

5 out of 5 stars bolling - a genius composer !.......2000-06-21

bolling is one of my favorite composers of this soft and easy to listen to combination of classical music and jazz. usually a preformer in a trio (- bass , drums and bolling on the piano) bolling composed a few albums with additional instuments -each album a different guest.the most famous is "suite for flute & jazz piano" - joined by rampal on flute. another is "suite for classic guitar & jazz piano" - this time joined by alexander lagoya - a great classical guitarist. after succeeding with both albums , bolling decided to compose an album with both lagoya & rampal as guests, the result (which was great) is called "picnic suite". it's a great combination ! mostly recommended !

3 out of 5 stars A Slight Innacuracy.......2007-06-13

The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.

Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.

Still, some great stuff here.

I was excited to find this album. I bought it but was horrified to find a loud vocal on the first track. The rest of the music is all instrumental but this one track simply JARS you when it plays. Very disappointing!

5 out of 5 stars Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06

Well, ERIC records has done it again.

Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.

First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.

There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.

Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!

There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...

Its listening the way it used to be.

3 out of 5 stars Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24

For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the First Volume.......2005-08-04

There is a great collection of music to be found here. There are many great renditions. The "2001, a Space Odyssey Fanfare" was outstanding. "Book of Days" from "Far and Away" had a very unique approach. I recommend this one deeply, oh yes I do, by far and away!

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 2.......2005-06-17

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' treatment of film scores on this second tribute to Hollywood are somewhat more pleasing than Volume I. The selections are more intriguing and demonstrate a more positive approach to film scores and their value as true musical art forms. There is quite a diverse representation of music here. The incredibly powerful main title to MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (Bronislaw Kaper) juxtaposed with the bittersweet and romantic love theme to SPARTACUS (Alex North) and the intimately tender love theme to FRIENDLY PERSUASION (Dimitri Tiomkin) are masterfully achieved. I have never been that enamored with this CD's 20-bit digital recording but it has grown on me. Still, I highly recommend and enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Sheila from Savannah, Georgia.......2005-01-15

I love this cd. It is the greatest. Moonglow and Midnight Cowboy are my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars A great album.......2001-01-28

Erich Kunzel, once again comes through with another terrific album of movie music. On this album you will find preludes, themes and main title music from some of Hollywood's most loved movies. Films from as early as 1936's "Modern Times", through to 1992's "Far and Away", are represented here. The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra are as wonderful as ever, and the 20-bit digital sound system makes for unequalled sound quality. A pleasing highlight for me, is the wonderful "Moonglow" which starts off track 5. The jazz trio of piano, bass and drums eventually is joined by the orchestra for the theme from "Picnic". Then we have the beautiful waltz from "Around the world in eighty days". With the wonderful accordion solo, you can imagine being on a merry-go-round. This is truly a beautiful album...a must for lovers of orcestral music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Recordings with a twist.......2006-08-03

This CD is full of jazz in spite of the fact that I have associated most of the performers with classical music. This shows the diversity in their ability to perform a wide array of music that I never heard in the past from them.

If you like jazz without too much dissonance, this is a great CD to purchase. The interesting and awkward rhythms are the best parts of this CD.

You can have your own party just from listening to this music.

5 out of 5 stars Bolling holds a swinging party & I won't leave.......2001-04-29

I had this CD around and was going to put it up for sale via Amazon Marketplace. I listen to other Bolling CDs. But, somehow I had "missed" the jivvy jazz in this recording.

As the sounds of "Baroque and Blue," 5:15, Track 1 started playing, the thoughts of selling the CD disappeared.

Bolling plays the piano superbly and Maurice Andre's trumpet radiates pure jazz notes. This is a clasical jazz CD. The 12 tracks tie together like movements of a symphony and there is a bewitching common theme, best heard in track 7 "Mystique." After Andre and Bolling swing in #7, track 8 "Canon," emerges with Jean Pierre Rampal's flute, golden. Guy Pedersen's string bass is crisp and Daniel Humair plays the drums with unhearlded pizzaz. And, how can one overlook the strumming of guitarist Alexandre Lagoya?

This is one of the best jazz or instrumental CDs I have ever heard. I normally listen while writing and use the sounds as background music. Lagoya's contribution to #9, Tendre, matching Rampal's clarity is mystical. So, I am enjoying each note and marveling at the classical synergy displayed.

The cover notes cite "recipes from Martha Stewart's "Entertaining" and her other best-selling books on food and lifestyle." Sure enough, Martha has a menu: 1. Cocktails & Sparkling Water...the CD's sounds sparkle. 2. Crudites with Anchovy Mayonnaise, complete with the recipe. 3. Chicken on Skewers, also including what to use & how. 4. Prosciutto and Figs: Anyone can lay this dish out. 5. Cornmeal-Fried Oysters: The recipe is for 2 dozen.

So, a person can buy this album (just) to get great recipes for dishes to accompany superb jazz. The recipes are simple to follow and delicious to read. One can buy the CD for the delightful cocktails that Bolling presents. But here "one = two." Or, to put this in other words "With two you get eggroll." The eggroll is the delightful dish one savors listening to the music while nibbling on the chicken & oysters. Magnifique!

5 out of 5 stars Strong Effort by REK and Crew.......2006-08-13

I guess you cannot give EVERY Robert Earl Keen CD five stars, but if you round up from 4 1/2 that is what you get. My cousin told me this was one of his favorite REK offerings, and I have to admit it is now one of mine. To me this CD "grows on you" more than any other REK CD. Of course most REK fans know he is the consumate artist that seems to grow on you. Any person I turn onto REK I usually say "give him a listen now and then, and he will grown on you". Favorites include "Levelland", which is not written by Robert Earl, and is a town in West Texas just west of Lubbock; I Wonder Where My Baby is Tonight; Runnin' With The Night; The Coming of The Son & Brother; and Fourth of July. If you are an REK fan, this CD will "grow on you" :)

5 out of 5 stars Doing What He Does Best.......2005-09-10

This is the second REK album I ever bought and I have just about played it out. "Picnic" is a wonderful collection of songs ranging from upbeat to mellow, from sad, to funny, to happy. REK has a way of telling stories in all of his songs that you rarely see now a days. You will not be dissappoint with this album.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music for Long Drives on I-20.......2003-10-13

My favorite thing about Robert Earl Keen is that he puts the heart and soul back in country music, if you can even call this country. It's a Texas thing, and one with no real genre. But anyway, it's dadgum fine stuff.

One of Keen's better efforts, Picnic is a mix of depression, desperation, longing, and regret. Good music for when you're feelin' down, just pop this in and let it rip, sing along at the top of your lungs.

Keen brings you down with "Oh Rosie's" relentless waltz tempo and mournful lyrics, you feel alone with "I Wonder Where My Baby is Tonight" and regret every botched relationship to "Forth of July" and "Over the Waterfall."

And you love every minute of it. These songs are absolutely fantastic, immensely catchy, and you'll find yourself hitting repeat again and again.

Contrasted against the mostly blue music on this disc are "Coming Home of the Son and Brother" and "Runnin' with the Night," two songs that make you want to roll down the windows and put the pedal to the floor.

If you like Keen, you've got to have this. If you haven't tried Keen, this is as good a place as any to start. Just be ready to buy the other nine albums. :)

3 out of 5 stars Good alternative country with folk rock feeling.......2003-08-14

If you like folk rock or alternative country, I bet you'll find this album interesting. Robert Earl Keen may not be the name of everyone's lip but he sure delivers the goods from time to time just like Joe Ely, Jayhawks, Scott Miller, or Whiskeytown.

5 out of 5 stars Unreal!.......2002-08-24

REK is regarded as one of the finest songwriter's in country, folk, roots rock music; ask his peers. The man is amazing. This disc made cry, laugh, and get a speeding ticket in one listen! He touches so many area's with his brand of Texas music,(that's the best way to describe it,)that it blow's me away. As far as I'm concerned, he's a top five artist on my all-time list.

5 out of 5 stars Bolling's Greatest Hits.......2007-05-13

If you haven't heard Claude Bolling's music, this is the CD you want to buy first. Not only does it have the best tunes of all his CDs each tune shows which CD it came from.

I love playing a Bolling tune and asking a friend is this Classical or Jazz? They'll always say it sounds like Classical and then it shifts to Jazz. Everyone that has heard his CDs goes out and buys it.

4 out of 5 stars Smart Jazz.......2006-03-08

A clever and talentous work on the pulse of jazz, mixing it with classical music.

4 out of 5 stars A Flutist's Intro to Bolling.......2002-10-20

Get this cd if you want to hear Bolling's works for flute before deciding if you would like to perform them. A great cd overall, maybe another brave flutist would like to redo these works? Although the late Jean-Pierre Rampal was known for doing 'the Picnic Suite' and 'Suite For Flute and Piano' I would like to add another artist to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection of Artist's & Bolling Compositions.......2001-05-01

Seems as here exhibited that the best of classical and jazz do have an area of union. Bolling combined the two by writing his suite for Flue and Jazz Piano, as well as these others for the specific performers.

How about writing a piece just for Jean-Pierre Rampal and Yo-Yo Ma?

Favorites include Baroque and Blue, Baroque in Rhythm and Rag-Polka.

This is music of a different sort, but most enjoyable. Bravo, Claude!

5 out of 5 stars Great Price, Great CD........2000-10-06

This is a collection of some great Claude Bolling pieces, including one of my favorites on track 4. If Bolling's style appeals to you, or if you are just looking for some good clever jazz, go for this. It's quite different, and it's good.

5 out of 5 stars Must for your collection ~ and your childrens collection.......2003-09-23

What a wonderful introduction to classical music for your children this CD is. My children love it and I do too. We use it as bedtime music now (ages 4 & 7). However, if your children really tune in to the music it can be a bit unnerving in parts so we used to only listen to it at home or in the car......they had to gain a few years to become comfortable with it in the darkness of their rooms at night. Buy this!

5 out of 5 stars Teddy Bears a Must-Listen!.......2000-09-06

This is the first CD by the New Columbian Brass Band I have ever purchased, and I can't wait to own them all. This virtuoso group is a joy to listen to. Owning this CD is a must for lovers of brass band/turn-of-the-century music. It's a delight!

5 out of 5 stars The cat's meow!.......2000-05-16

Dorian Recordings should be given some kind of award for the most imaginative releases of not only great historical but great musical value. (DOR-93201) features the New Columbian Brass Band under George Foreman playing 15 pieces written from 1900 to 1921 and inspired by animals.

So we have "The Teddy Bears Picnic," "A Morning in Noah's Ark," "The Two Little Bullfinches," "Turkey in the Straw," and even "Tiger Rag." The Noah's Ark number is replete with animal sounds by a guest expert and links up with an earlier Dorian release called "A Trip to Coney Island: Descriptive Overtures from America's Golden Age" (DOR-80153), which introduced me to a form of musical tone poem very popular around the turn of the century.

This is one of those rare recordings that will appeal to all age levels; and scholars will be delighted to note that "Turkey in the Straw" is actually a Humoresque for Clarinet. Also anyone who has ever seen barnyard chickens in any old Warner Brothers cartoon will have already heard "Chicken Reel." A very definite 5 star Grabbit.
