Inspirational Journey

On this gospel-themed collection, the artist who brought "new traditionalism" to Nashville goes all the way back to the Rock of Ages. Old-time religion meets old-time country on "Feet on the Rock," with other material ranging from the Judgement Day literalism of "Which Way Will You Choose" to the mystically metaphorical "See Myself in You" to a stripped-to-the-bone, album-closing rendition of "Amazing Grace." The loping "The Carpenter" (one of three songs cowritten by Travis) features guest vocals from Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, while "Doctor Jesus," with its mournful steel guitar, could pass for vintage George Jones. Though some of the lesser tracks are stronger on sermonizing than musical appeal, the melodic uplift of "Baptism" could highlight any Travis album. --Don McLeese

It has been said on more than one occasion that traditional country and Southern gospel music are "kissin cousins." But rarely has there been an "exhibit A" that illustrates the point as well as Randy Travis newest release, Inspirational Journey.

It was his baptism four years ago that inspired Travis to record an album of songs that reflect his faith. He has crafted a superb collage of 12 tunes (11 originals plus "Amazing Grace") that sticks closely to his multi-platinum selling musical formula while offering an in-depth look at the Christian faith. Ron Block of Union Station penned the gutsy "Which Way Will You Choose," while Mickey Cates wrote the picturesque "Baptism," a tune slated to release on country radio under the title, "Down With the Old Man." In addition, Waylon Jennings and Jessi Coulter contribute substantial vocals on "The Carpenter," one of the three cuts Travis co-wrote.

Traditional country music is famous for its abundance of steel guitar, fiddle, three-part harmonies and enough all-around twang to get even the laziest boot scooting. Southern gospel has often been known to inspire involuntary foot stomping and head bobbing. Inspirational Journey combines the two in a seamless blend that sticks to the basics. And as is usually the case with Travis, it works. -- By Laura Harris (c) 2001 CCM Communications, Inc.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Card: 10 years of sensational music.......2007-02-13

I own every project he has put out but this is the first CD of his that I own (the rest are cassettes). His music is evokative and profound, the way he can make a cello cry like a mournful dove is simply fantastic.
I hope to increase my Michael Card CD collection in the very near future.

btw His Brother to Brother collaberation with John Michael Talbot is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars THE REAL "SUMMER OF LOVE" .......2005-03-03

MICHAEL CARD's Greatest Hits compilation was released in 1994 - one of the best years of my life. I recall hearing the song 'WHY?' for the first time in my (then) girlfriend's car, just as we were entering the eastbound I-10 onramp at Sepulveda Boulevard. Only a couple of months earlier, on April 6, while alone in an apartment in a grungy area of Los Angeles, I was quite unexpectedly driven to my knees, where Jesus Baptized me with The Holy Spirit. I didn't exactly know what had happened to me , or why - only that I was suddenly changed somehow. Obviously, that was a special year for this reviewer, and when I heard Michael Card sing, "WHY DID THEY NAIL HIS FEET AND HANDS WHEN HIS LOVE WOULD HAVE HELD HIM THERE?" it perfectly described the Fire I felt inside me, and the Love that I knew Jesus has for us! I asked my girlfriend to replay that song several times. For me, that remains one of the greatest lines ever written about my Savior King. And although I don't play it often, 'JOY IN THE JOURNEY' always takes me back to that magical year of rebirth.

Michael Card does not have a particularly great voice, but it adequately conveys the obviously heartfelt convictions of his nicely crafted Gospel songs. What makes Card special is his lyrics; he is Christian Rock's premier wordsmith, able to create songs around deep theological concepts. He overreaches at times ("...the universe fell from His Fingertips."; "...He sent His only Son and so became a Holy Embryo."), but that's the cost of creating fresh, unique expressions, and attempting to translate the Mystery into song. There may be an occasional misstep, but there's no doggerel verse here - just first class Christian poetry sung with sincerity, and sometimes backed by surprisingly powerful "electric" passion ('Known By The Scars', 'Scandalon', 'So Many Books', and my favorite track, 'Know You In The Now.') I'm rarely impressed by the lyrics of most songwriters, but consider these lines :

HE CANNOT LOVE MORE, AND WILL NOT LOVE LESS

WE IN OUR WEAKNESS BELIEVED WE WERE STRONG / HE BECAME HELPLESS TO SHOW WE WERE WRONG...
FOR THE POWER OF PARADOX OPENS YOUR EYES / AND BLINDS THOSE WHO SAY THEY CAN SEE

THAT IS THE MYSTERY, MORE THAN YOU CAN SEE / GIVE UP YOUR PONDERING AND FALL DOWN ON YOUR KNEES
NO FICTION AS FANTASTIC AND WILD / A MOTHER MADE BY HER OWN CHILD

TO HEAR WITH MY HEART, TO SEE WITH MY SOUL / TO BE GUIDED BY A HAND I CANNOT HOLD
TO TRUST IN A WAY THAT I CANNOT SEE / THAT'S WHAT FAITH MUST BE

THERE IS A JOY IN THE JOURNEY, THERE'S A LIGHT WE CAN LOVE ON THE WAY
THERE IS A WONDER AND WILDNESS TO LIFE, AND FREEDOM FOR THOSE WHO OBEY

TO BE SO COMPLETELY GUILTY, GIVEN OVER TO DESPAIR
TO LOOK INTO YOUR JUDGE'S FACE AND SEE A SAVIOR THERE

Now THAT'S what I call "writing!" Most of these tracks are enthusiastic and catchy. If they played this stuff on Christian radio I'd tune in once in awhile.

Michael Card's, 'JOY IN THE JOURNEY' puts joy in my journey, and it calls to mind my personal "Summer Of Love." And when this world douses my spirit, 'JOY IN THE JOURNEY' can fan my embers into a Divine Flame again. Brothers and Sisters, I think you'll like it too.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Theological Truths in Music Form.......2004-11-22

Music is powerful. The Bible makes this clear. Within the heart of man is a desire to release their emotions, affections, dreams, concerns, even theological truths in musical form. The Psalms (literally "praises") were written with all forms of human emotions but contained truths focused on God's Word (Psalm 119 is a prime example).

Today, however, it seems Christian music has lost its theological focus. Its now more bent on experience or a "personal relationship with Jesus." Songs taken from the Scriptures and the truth therein is found mainly in some praise & worship artists and Michael Card. Card is a theologian who happens to play guitar. His love and passion for the Scriptures flows in his songs. From El Shaddai to The Final Word, Card takes deep theological truths and put them to music.

There is a silent revolution taking place in Christian music. The likes of Keith Green, Steve Camp, John Fisher, and Michael Card is not lost. God is reviving musicians who desire to glorify God alone! And I'm happy to endorse this album as an example of that revolution.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best!.......2002-10-11

Michael Card is a pure muscial genius. What's better is he has decided to devote his gift to Christ. I have listened to practically all Christian artists and Michael Card is the King. Without any doubt. If you don't own this man's album, shame on you. Each of his songs are so deep, thoughtful, and annoited. My dad always says he could preach a sermon on each of Card's songs. I agree. His best includes: Scandalon, Starkindler, Known By the Scars, Know You in the Now, How Long, The Dragon, Into the Mystery, Celebrate the Child, The Final Word, God's Own Fool, Why?, Joy In the Journey, Salvation, Jubilee, You are Worthy, Soul Anchor, and many more. I can't say enough about this man and his music. BUY THIS CD!

5 out of 5 stars Randy's Gospel Message.......2006-03-18

Randy Travis delivers a great Gospel message on this album. It takes about beliving in Jesus and the Faith of a good Christian. If you are a Catholic or even Christian..This CD is for you. Praise The Lord for Randy!!

5 out of 5 stars Randy's voice is tops!.......2005-03-25

This was one of my first Randy Travis CDs, as I "discovered" him with my sister not to long ago. Another sister of mine bought this with "Rise and Shine", and I failed to find anything special in it because I highly doubted Randy's new found faith in our Lord. But after learning how sincere he was, I really listened to this album and found it a treasure. Although I agree that "Rise and Shine" and the new "Passing Through" are better albums musically, I gave this five stars simply because Randy's voice is the best in the world. Period. No one else can combine perfect pitch with jaw dropping passion like he can. And this CD is no exception.

"Baptism" is one of my favorites, but there are others I enjoy. One track that especially sticks out is "Amazing Grace." His rendition is the purest- just the guitar and Randy. Nothing better. I get choked up when I hear it. Many praise and worship versions have been rendered with gaudy music and opera style voices attempting to harness the passion of the hymn. But Randy sings it and means it in his sweet, simple cowboy fashion- and suddenly, time stops and one has to listen to his every word. If you have never felt the meaning of Amazing Grace before, you'll feel it with this album.

This album also includes some nice photos of Randy inside :)

4 out of 5 stars Reflective, traditional gospel album (but no Rise and Shine).......2005-03-03

At the end of my review of Rise and Shine, I recommended Rise and Shine over this album. There's a caveat to that recommendation. If you like the traditional country music of Johnny Cash, George Jones, and The Oak Ridge Boys, then you might like this album better than the more contemporary and upbeat Rise and Shine.

Inspirational Journey reminds me a lot of the gospel quartet music that my grandfather used to play on Sunday morning, although the songs are mostly just Randy with occasional backup harmonies. The songs on this album sound like traditional gospel songs-they're fairly slow-paced and reflect a lot of inner passion. For the most part, you could play this CD and be praying at the same time without being distracted. I think that's what I didn't like about it as much when I got it at the same time as Rise and Shine because it can fade into the background. But, of course, that's also why I play it a lot when I need a little peace and contemplation.

The instrumentation on Inspirational Journey is simple and acoustic. Randy's amazing voice really stands out on this album with minimal backing by bass, piano, fiddle, drums, and the occasional steel guitar. There aren't a lot of highly memorable songs on this CD other than Don't Ever Sell Your Saddle. Still, the choruses of Feet on the Rock, Which Way Will You Choose, Doctor Jesus, and Drive Another Nail are all catchy. The Carpenter is a great recording with Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter.

I made a new CD that combined my favorite songs from Rise and Shine and Inspirational Journey. Both albums could have been written in the same period with a savvy producer separating the songs by traditional (likes the popular 60s and 70s male vocalists) v. contemporary country. Both CDs are worth owning if you like gospel music and/or Randy Travis. Now, the third and newest CD is yet a third creature. It's mostly hymns and so even more traditional than Inspirational Journey.

5 out of 5 stars spirit and artistry.......2003-11-12

Every aspect of this carefully chosen and crafted collection of inspirational songs is superb. The music will delight your ears and the words lift your spirit.
The musicianship is flawless, and Randy's tender, heartfelt interpretations filled with beauty. The simplicity of his "Amazing Grace" is a fitting final track; sung with minimal backing, it is a powerful rendition of this glorious hymn.
Randy co-wrote three of the songs, and all are wonderful: "The Carpenter" (w. Chip Taylor and Ron Avis), is a trio with Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, "Walk with Me" (w. Les Bohan), is a bouncy tune with words that are a lovely prayer, and "I Am Going" (w. Buck Moore), is about leaving this life with joy and no regrets.

Other favorites include two up-tempo songs: "Feet on the Rock" (Troy Seals/Buck Moore), "I put my feet on the rock, and my name on the roll~When it's called up yonder, I won't worry 'bout my soul", is a track where his entire band gets to shine, and "Which Way Will You Choose" (Ron Block), is an end-times admonition with fabulous fiddle work by Hank Singer.
The small booklet insert has the lyrics and recording info, and total time is 41'22.
If you like traditional country music, this CD is a musical journey well worth taking.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2003-09-01

If you ever thought Randy Travis was just another runof the mill country singer, this album will prove you wrong.

Not only is his voice the finely honed instrument it always is, but the songs offer a variety of sounds and styles.

While still having the traditional "Amazing Grace," he also explores a variety of topics from baptism to the tribulation. He goes from traditional country to rocking country to the often un-explored minor key.

I've been a fan of First Call for more than 12 years. This is, by far, my favorite album. It is loaded with their incredible harmonies, but seems a bit more serious than some of their other albums. You can tell that this album is more "from the heart" than any of their other works. This group has been on a tough journey over the years, but this album reminds us that all of life is a "Sacred Journey".

This is the first CD that I ever heard of their music. It just blew me away. i listen to a lot of music of all types and this is one of my favorite CD's. It is an inspired tribute to God if i ever heard one. Every cut is carefully woven into a complete fabric. The vocal harmonies are fantastic! It is a shame that the group broke up after this CD. This CD speakes to my heart and I think to the heart of God.

4 out of 5 stars "Sacred Journey" takes First Call to new heights of artistry.......1998-06-18

"Sacred Journey", First Call's fifth release (second release with new member Marabeth Jordan after the departure of Mel Tunney) marks a bold new style and sound for the trio. Taking a more acoustic, raw feel, the group leaves behind the techno-overtones of "Human Song" and the band style harmonies of "God is Good". "Sacred Journey" is gritty, real, bold and moving all in one. Highlight tracks include the soaring "Freedom", the knee-slapping "Just Can't Help Myself", and the outstandingly moving "Evidence of Love". Newcomer Jordan's voice makes a stunning addition, bringing out the raw, haunting tones of Bonnie Keen's soprano. The range of acoustic guitars are combined with strings and a judicious use of bass and drums for what proved to be "First Call"'s best and final release as a trio. Marabeth Jordan departed the group after this album. This CD is well worth a listen!
