I've Got a Right to Cry

This Mandy Barnett CD is sure to get pegged as a Patsy Cline karaoke project--for one thing, because it was the last project of Cline's producer, the late and great Owen Bradley, and, for another, because Barnett got her break playing Cline in a stage play. With her sultry, powerful voice, Barnett can play the part to the hilt, but the Patsy connection only tells part of the story. The best cut here, "Funny, Familiar, Forgotten Feelings," is actually closer to the steel-driven '70s work Bradley did with Conway Twitty. Throughout the cuts pay tribute to a long tradition of catchy country, from Eddy Arnold and Carl Smith to Don Gibson and Hank Jr. But it's Patsy that Barnett most often channels. So, "Don't Forget to Cry," the title track, and others purr and swoon away like "Crazy," just as you'd expect, but they come off as trying too hard, too busy, slightly manic, full-tilt from note one. Still, Barnett's Patsy impersonation is really something. And until she finally lets us hear her own true voice, I've Got a Right is a charming countrypolitan trip down memory lane. --David Cantwell

Push the button and it sounds like Nashville, 1960: tinkling piano, cooing chorus, Patsy Cline.

5 out of 5 stars Barnett's elegant delivery is never better than it is here.......2007-03-24

As a DJ and collector of country music in particular, I've had an opportunity to listen to thousands of CDs, and I keep coming back to this one as being one of the ten best I have ever heard. Mandy Barnett should be a bigger star. Ask anyone who's heard her, especially this release, and they'll tell you. She's compared so often to Patsy Cline because few singers can offer the range and passion in their delivery the way Barnett does. "I've Got A Right To Cry" is backed by some of the best talent country music has to offer. Legendary Owen Bradley produces four of the tracks. The song selection is outstanding, with Barnett covering classics from Don Gibson ("Give Myself A Party") and Porter Wagoner ("Trademark") among others. The string arrangements on songs like "Don't Forget To Cry" bring to mind Cline's "Sweet Dreams". Song for song, I find this one of the best collections of country music released by a single artist in the last ten years. Highest marks.

5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful voice!.......2005-12-19

After you hear Mandy's voice you will know what I mean. Her voice is so clear and strong song after song. In 2005 I saw and heard her perform in Hanover, PA. Her voice is amazing.

On her I've Got A Right To Cry CD, just listen to her sing these songs; The Wispering Wind, With My Eyes Wide Open I'm Dreaming, and Don't Forget To Cry. It is so beautiful.

3 out of 5 stars A nice change of pace but not as good as I once thought.......2005-03-12

Mandy Barnett made her name in "Always", a stage play about Patsy Cline. It's easy to see why...you can hear the ghost of Cline in Barnett's vocals. Here, she trades on it whole-hog, recording at Bradley's Barn, enlisting Owen himself to produce 4 of the songs ("I've got a Right to Cry","The Whispering Wind (Blows on by)","Mistakes" and "Don't Forget to Cry"), and recording some classic country tunes to emphasis the throwback sound (Don Gibson's "Give Myself a Party" and Porter Wagoner's "Trademark").

I remember being absolutely awestruck when I first heard this and it's easy to see why: at the time (1999) there really was nothing, save a few Leann Rimes efforts, that sounded like her on the market. Now that I've had a few years to go back to it and listen more critically, I see there are a few cracks in the veneer.

Best tracks here are the sprightly "Who (Will it be?)", where Barnett soars light as a feather over the track, two of Bradley's tracks highlight how good countrypolitan could sound on "The Whispering Wind" and "With my Eyes Wide Open I'm Dreaming", and a cover of the Mickey Newbury tune "Funny, Familiar, Forgotten Feelings" also sparkles.

Low spots here are her take on Porter's "Trademark", the title tune and "Don't Forget to Cry". On this trio, Barnett sounds as though she's forcing the catch into her voice and making sure to twang so it's "authentic". She sounds better when she isn't reminding herself to make herself sound more Cline-like.

Bottom Line: If you love traditional country, there isn't much out in the market for you. This will be a breath of fresh air. However, don't think it's the second coming of Patsy yet. She still needs some seasoning to reach her potential, but she's got a great voice to do it with so who knows what the future holds?

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant country singer that never made it big.......2005-01-14

Ever since Patsy Cline died, it seems that record companies have been looking for the next Patsy Cline, except that when somebody comes along who sounds a lot like Patsy, it scares them. So it was that Mandy Barnett, who comes closer to Patsy's sound than anybody else has ever done, generated a lot of interest but had only limited success. This is sad because this album (her second) is full of quality. The Patsy similarities are emphasised by the production team. Owen Bradley (Patsy's producer in the sixties) was at the helm on four tracks - the last tracks he ever produced. The remaining tracks were co-produced by Mandy with two other members of the Bradley family.

Perhaps the real reason for Mandy's limited success is that her music did not fit in with contemporary country radio. Several of the songs are oldies including Give myself a party (Don Gibson), Funny familiar forgotten feelings (a country hit for Don Gibson but a UK pop hit for Tom Jones), Trademark (Porter Wagoner) and Don't forget to cry (written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant). Several tracks also feature prominent steel guitar, which is not appreciated by contemporary country radio.

So this is a great album for traditional country fans but it didn't establish Mandy as the major country star that she deserves to be.

4 out of 5 stars We Need More Cds By This Great Talent.......2004-10-13

This is a real talent, unlike some of the country stars of today (such as Shania Twain). What a great voice! She really sings her heart out too. There are only 2 songs on this disc I don't care for(Trademark, and Falling, Falling, Falling). I love the rest. I would have rated it 5 stars if it weren't for those 2 songs. Why are there not more cds by Mandy? As far as I know she had one other cd and it came out before this cd. A voice this great needs to be recorded much more often. It is seems odd and unfair sometimes that someone with this much talent isn't a bigger star and people with no talent(Shania Twain) become huge stars.
